Welcome Back! As only Melbourne can turn on, we have had a mixture of weather for the holiday break – stunning and sunny to wintry, cold bristly days during the last weekend. I hope that everyone had an enjoyable change from the routines of the school day that the holidays bring. The students have returned fresh and ready to begin a new term of learning!

Handyman The school hasn’t yet found a replacement handyman. If you know of any family member who would be suitable for this role, please call the school.

Grade 5/6 Camp On Tuesday May 1st, our senior students will travel to Forest Lodge, Yarram for a four-day camping experience. Forest Lodge is an adventure camp which provides the students with many ‘thrill seeking’ activities. The favourite is the giant swing which really gets the adrenaline rushing as you free fall through the air before the slack is taken up…. certainly a favourite of mine! Other activities include the ropes courses, canoeing, bush cooking, flying fox, night hike, swimming and archery. The camp provides fully qualified staff to supervise the adventure activities. Everyone will have a wonderful time! Please keep your fingers crossed that the beautiful weather that we have had for most of this week will follow the students to Yarram!

K Motion and OSHC K Motion commences on Thursday 3rd May for a six-week block. If any students are booked into OSHC but attend K Motion, please advise OSHC staff or the office. It causes heart rates to soar in the OSHC staff when they expect students for the After School Care program and they don’t arrive because they have gone to K Motion. Your support with this would be appreciated.

Curriculum Day Just a reminder that there will be a Curriculum Day on Tuesday April 24th 2018. Students are not required at school on this day. The staff will be listening focussed on the area of Mathematics, Other curriculum days planned for the remainder of the year will be on 8th June 2018 and 20th July 2018.

ANZAC Day As there is a public holiday on Wednesday 25th April 2018 there will be no school. Enjoy the extra day away from school and work and please stay safe! As reported in the last newsletter, Sarah Abraham and I fly to Nepal on Anzac Day for approximately one month’s leave. Janelle Dale will be teaching Sarah’s grade and Meredith Smith will be the Acting Principal during my absence.

This week we read

Lester and Clyde.

Livi’s favourite

character was Clyde

because he is calm.

Grace said that Lester

and Clyde lived in a

beautiful pond.

Amelie knew that the

pond changed colour

because there was

rubbish in it. On Tuesday I took

the bucket into the

chook pen and fed

the chickens our

scraps. I tried to

pat the black one

but it ran away.

Ruby

The chooks are

eating our scraps.

Their favourite was

the bread crusts.

Avery

We have three school

chooks and they live

in the chook pen.

Yasmin

We did tally marks to

count our food scraps

and our rubbish.

Five tally marks make

one bundle.

Tahlia

We should have less

rubbish so we don’t

get pollution

everywhere. Lester

and Clyde couldn’t

survive with pollution.

Marija

Harrison likes to write

about dogs.

Zak likes to write about

cats

PARENT INFORMATION BULLETIN – Term 2

Grades F, 1 & 2 – Week 2 Commencing – Monday 23rd of April

Numeracy Below are a variety of learning tasks that will be explicitly taught this week. Students will be making a column graph identifying their favorite fruit. Collate data using tally marks. Record this in a table and using icy pole sticks. Discussing the data as what has more, what has the least? Students will be converting raw data, from a table. Students have to total the amount and create a column graph. Students will then be make statements about the data. Students will be using multiple columns to represent combined data A home activity you could do this week could be to make a column graph of chores completed in the home. For example;

20

30

50

Monday Wednesday

Mum

Dad

Joe

This could be displayed on the fridge and added to as each chore is completed Classes will continue to collect classroom data about how much rubbish and recyclable waste we create in a day. During week one the students were fascinated about how quickly the rubbish accumulated and that they could change the weight of the rubbish buy eating more of their fruit or other foods.

Literacy Reading Writing Spelling

• Identify the topic of a book/ page based on the picture clue given

• Identifying the initial phoneme (sound) in words and matching that to the grapheme (written letter) in a word

• Make meaning of an unfamiliar text, topic or vocabulary within a text. When a student is reading and comes to an unfamiliar word that the picture or phonemes (sounds) do not help to decode they read on, to increase their meaning and understanding of the sentence and to identify the unfamiliar word successfully

• Identifying facts that support the main idea V’s facts to engage readers

• Identifying the main idea and find evidence in the text to support that main idea

• Identifying the topic sentence within a paragraph and the content that supports that statement

All JLC classes will be reading about Australian frogs this week. A home activity you could do to support your child’s leaning would be to research, read or investigate the topic of Australian frogs.

Writing: Students will be writing persuasive pieces to encourage people to recycle more Students may be expected to;

• Write from left to right

• Begin each sentence with a capital letter

• End each sentence with a full stop

• Sound out unfamiliar words using their spelling strategies- For example; phonetic (sound), visual, morphemic, connecting and etymology

• Read back their own writing to another person to add meaning

• Use some learnt/ known factual information to persuade their audience

• Include some emotive language to influence readers

This is an ongoing task and will be a focus for week two and three. A home activity you could do to support your child’s learning is to ask them to convince you to allow them for a special treat, to take them to the park or watch a movie together.
