PSA: Avoiding the Norovirus
The Norovirus is a virus that can infect people of all ages and cause acute gastroenteritis. It is particularly common in the winter months. This virus is strong against the cold and the dry air and can live on surfaces for a long time. Even coming in contact with a tiny amount of the virus can get you sick.
Symptoms: Fever of 37–38°C, diarrhea, vomiting, muscle aches, and headache
How to Prevent: Wash your hands thoroughly before eating and after using the bathroom; cook food such as shellfish completely-the virus is dies if it gets hotter than 85°C for at least a minute; practice food safety; If someone vomits, be sure to clean it carefully and thoroughly
Be aware that: There are no effective antiviral medications to treat the norovirus—only the symptoms can be treated. People with weaker immune systems, such as infants and the elderly, are at risk of hydration if they get sick and may need to go to the hospital for IV fluids. Norovirus is not just spread through food, the virus can be found in large quantities in vomit and feces and therefore can be spread from person-to-person.
Charlie’s Recipe Corner Brownie in a Mug
Just in time for Valentine’s Day, I have this super simple recipe to share with you. This recipe makes a single serving of cakey brownie in about 5 minutes using the microwave and few dishes. You could even make it in a new mug and give a special someone (like yourself) two gifts at once.
I recommend a larger mug with a wide top–think a soup or cappuccino mug–the batter needs room to puff up while it cooks. I used a mug that narrows toward the top and the batter rose 3 cm above the top of the mug… a
bowl will also work well. For the chocolate, I simply used milk chocolate which is why I added so little sugar. If you use a darker
chocolate you may need to add more sugar to get the sweetness you want. Also keep in mind that the better the chocolate, the better this will turn out. I hope you give this a try!
Method 1. Add the butter and the bar of chocolate (broken into pieces) into a mug 2. Microwave for a minute or until the mixture has melted 3. Mix together until smooth 4. Add the egg and mix thoroughly 5. Add the rest of the ingredients and mix until smooth 6. Microwave for 2 minutes at 600 watts or until completely set 7. Add powdered sugar and ice cream as desired and devour
