ART SHOW & BUSH DANCE FRIDAY 5pm

DON’T FORGET YOUR TICKETS For quicker access to TryBooking ticketing site use link in CareMonkey email

Principal’s Award: Displaying Artistic Skills Assembly: No class item - Awards and Birthdays Only! A very quick assembly scheduled.

Weather forecast 22⛅ Thursday and 19⛆ rain Friday - Fingers crossed for no rain.

Dear Families, This Friday, we celebrate a culmination of the students and staff hard work and creative achievements, with our much anticipated Art Show and Bush Dance. St. Joseph’s Arts program continues to be a valued aspect of educational program, particularly with the welcome addition of music in 2016. We thank Mrs Chris, Mrs Quinn, Miss Angie and the staff for their passion and significant investment in these programs. The unwavering and generous involvement from our active parents has not been lost with the ‘many hands’ approach offered this Friday evening and in the classrooms prior, supporting the students and staff with the many art pieces to be displayed in our gallery. This term, the children have truly flourished and responded so enthusiastically to the increased focus and opportunities for creative expression. We remain confident that all families will appreciate and acknowledge these efforts and be rewarded with the unveiling on Friday evening. We’re hopeful the crowds will be down at the MCG because of our worthy celebration, rather than the other way around. Just for the record, the MCG can be seen from the Year 5 classroom and most families will be home in time for an enthralling second half of the football.

A few practical matters: Children can be picked up early on Friday to provide a rest prior to the show Don’t forget your tickets! Entry through the front office. Tickets required. Raffle tickets on sale for the Fete. Atrium floor a closed pedestrian zone. Class song items performed in the atrium. In multi-purpose room if raining. Bush dance playground weather permitting. If raining, moved to the atrium. Food vans in playground. Main art gallery upstairs. Entry via front office. Parish Entry locked. Art work will go home the following week. All toddlers with an adult at all times. Children must be closely supervised with an adult for the bush dance and class song item.

Father’s Day Breakfast & Assembly What an amazing turnout for our special breakfast! Our sincere thanks to the wonderful mums and staff who arrived early to assist with the preparation and serving. We have the most remarkable and generous parent community ensuring that these special days/events are always well supported and celebrated. A remarkable and well-oiled team! The quick transformation of the atrium by the staff in preparation for assembly was simply brilliant and greatly appreciated within the tight timeframe. No surprises and congratulations to our most impressive Preps, Miss Dullard & Miss Cauchi for taking on the assembly item at such short notice. I’m acutely aware of the added requirements across the school, however their willingness and no fuss manner in Miss Glumac’s absence, was so well received. I’m blessed to have such a supportive team!

Confirmation What a beautiful Confirmation on Friday evening with the Year 6 students and families. We thank Archbishop Hart, Fr. Varghese and Fr. Sonek for celebrating this special sacrament. Congratulations Miss O, Mr Eddy and Mrs Quitt for supporting and preparing the children so superbly - it really showed. We understand this was yet another commitment outside of hours, on a ‘Friday’ evening, however, the significant staff support for the students, families and their colleagues was noted by all and valued again. It speaks volumes! School Board Presentation What and exceptional presentation from both Miss Guy and Miss Ryle at the recent School Board meeting. Miss Guy presented an overview of the soon to be introduced BYOD program for Year 4 in 2017. This was endorsed by the School Board on the evening and more details will follow shortly. Miss Ryle gave an overview of the sustainability program and practices implemented at St. Joseph’s under her leadership and the direction for the future. I couldn’t have been more impressed and proud of their efforts. Great leadership, highlighting their capabilities and immense value to our community. The Board were blown away by their respective presentations! ARMS - Staffing Structures The annual staff review process to date has been outstanding and I anticipate in the coming weeks that we will settle on structures for 2017. I hope to notify all parents of these likely plans in the coming weeks as these should all be finalized shortly. At this stage, there will be some likely staff movement, however, I still need to finalise certain roles and part-time positions due to financial considerations and 3 staff returning from maternity leave. Thank you for your patience and understanding with these matters and I ask that parents do not put in requests for teachers at this stage. In accordance with school policy, any such considerations must have a strong and legitimate educational reason put in writing. Sadly, Vasy Petros (student support officer) will not be returning to St. Joseph’s due to the deteriorating health of her father. Vasy requires time and energy to organise the appropriate care for her parents. We sincerely thank Vasy for her commitment and care shown towards the staff, parents and importantly student community. We ask that you please keep Vasy and her family in your thoughts and prayers. We also keep Kerry Burns deep in our prayers as her youngest brother tragically passed away on the weekend. Kerry will be out of the office in the coming days as she supports her family during this difficult time. Look forward to a fantastic week and celebrations with the Art Show and Bush Dance on Friday. Yee Haa, Simon Collis Principal Important afterthoughts…

How lovely to see Mrs Howell’s and Signora Clewer in the classrooms on their non-specialist days doing some additional teaching hours relieving teaching staff. It’s great to acknowledge the diversity of our staff and I know the children enjoy these opportunities.

PCW SCHOLARSHIP CONGRATULATIONS

We are very proud of four St Joseph's students (past and current) at the PCW Scholarship Award Night. Ina Carillo (Year 6), received an Academic Scholarship Award for 2017 and 2018. Abbey Wilcox (Year 6) received a Community Scholarship Award for 2017 and 2018. Bridie Wilcox and Ella Thomas-Evens both received a Music Scholarship Award for 2017 and 2018.

Preps visit to the Elsternwick Library

On Friday 2nd September the Preps excitedly walked down to the Elsternwick library. This was a special activity organised by Mrs Pepper as a part of the Book Week activities. The children listened to two different books and heard the librarian talk about the different types of books/items you can borrow from the library. The students were very engaged and listened beautifully to the storybooks; ‘The Cow Tripped Over the Moon’ and ‘The Very Noisy Bear’. We had a delightful morning!

CODING AND ROAMING IT LESSONS

So much wonderful feedback has also been received from the teachers and students as Miss Guy schedules weekly visits to the classes to deliver IT lessons. The newly purchased OSMO kits have also been so well sought after and these were in great use in Year 2 on Friday. Win win!

“Coding in Grade 3 is going to be a hit! Miss Guy was amazing!” Anonymous Teacher

MUSIC UPDATE FOR THE ARTS FESTIVAL…

The children have worked very hard this term to prepare an item for the Arts Festival, which will be performed at the Bush Dance.

Whilst we understand that there can be reasons for not attending the night, we have allocated all children with a part to play.

If you are aware that your family will not be attending, could you please let your child’s class teacher know this week. This will enable us to make minor changes if required. Looking forward to a fun night, Miss Angie and Mrs Quinn

Props Needed: A small sheepskin and a swag Please e-mail Mrs Quinn if you can assist: [email protected]

ART UPDATE FOR THE ARTS FESTIVAL…

This Friday the 9th of September is our Arts Festival Gala Night showcasing a combination of bush dancing, performances by the children and a walking tour of the children’s amazing art pieces. These pieces were created both in the classroom and in Art sessions. The inspiration for the art activities displayed is the Inquiry Unit, Australia. The children have worked very hard on their pieces and are excited to share with their families and friends what they have learnt and created. Through the Visual Art program, the junior school have incorporated a variety of printing activities based on Australian animals. The middle school students’ collage and printing pieces have been inspired by their experiences within Australia. The senior school have used Aboriginal design and patterns of Australian Impressionists, encapsulating those ideas into their drawing, painting and collage activities. We welcome you with open arms in celebrating the childrens’ achievements. May we all have a good night and rejoice together on this special occasion. Mrs Chris

BEACHSIDE ATHLETICS CARNIVAL

Congratulations to our 17 children who participated in the Beachside Athletics Carnival last week. The competition was extremely tough, yet our students remained positive and enthusiastic throughout the day. Their team spirit and support for each other is to be commended! A huge congratulations to two students - Rowland Hill who achieved first place in discus and Jasmin Edmond who achieved second place in triple jump - they will now progress on to the Regional Athletics carnival next term. We are extremely proud of your achievements. Yours in sport, Mrs Howell

Maths Olympiad

Hi, we’re Emily Saunders and Emily Glass and we’re here to tell you more about the APSMO (Australia Problem-

Solving Mathematics Olympiad).

Last Friday we focussed on algebra and writing algebraic equations. We learnt to make sure that we always put

down the information into the sum that we already know and find out the ‘unknowns’ from there.

We started off the lesson with a paired warm-up where we had to answer as many of the following questions in

10 minutes. Here are the questions that we worked on. See how you go with the challenge.

Can you work out these questions within 10 minutes?

1. Twice a number is twenty-eight.

2. Five less than three times a number is forty-six.

3. Three is twenty-one, divided by the sum of a number and five.

4. The quotient of thirty-nine and a number is three.

5. Eric had $197 in his savings account before he was paid his weekly salary. His current savings balance is $429.

If Eric deposits all of his earnings, then, how much money does he earn each week?

Another activity we did was ‘Monkey Business’ and ‘Bake Sale’. In these activities we continued our work on

algebra, writing equations and working backwards. We worked on all of these activities in pairs as this allows

us to gain strategies and ideas from each other.

Here are the standings from after the fourth Maths Olympiad:

Preparation for the school fete, “St Joseph’s Rio Carnival” is well underway. This is the major fundraising event for 2016. Thanks so much to those who are busy working behind the scenes and to those who have already been in contact regarding the major raffle prizes and silent auction items.

There are still plenty of “fete” jobs left to do – we would love to see some more parents ( new and old ) getting involved. Please come along to the next FETE MEETING on Wednesday 14th September. This is your school community. Many hands make light work. Everyone welcome!

WE ARE A 3 STAR SCHOOL!!

We recently received news from Sustainability Victoria that our third module, the water module, has been

certified and we are now a 3 Star Sustainable School. We are well on our way towards being a leadership

school and will continue to work within the area of water here at school. Well done to all of the students on this

achievement, which included being able to raise $26,000 for new water tanks. Keep up the good work.

ResourceSmart Schools Awards

We have been nominated to apply for the recent ResourceSmart Schools awards. St Joseph’s entered into

three categories, Energy School of the Year 2015/2016, Student Leadership Team of the Year and Teacher of

the Year. The submissions were sent off recently with the finalists to be announced in October and the winners

announced at an event in November. Our submissions included statements and contributions from staff,

students and parents. Well done and thank you to all in our community that have assisted with these

submissions.

Powershop - Carbon neutral energy

This month St Joseph’s has made a change with our electricity supplier. Powershop is a

company that operates currently in New South Wales and Victoria providing carbon neutral

energy to both business and residential customers. We met with a representative from the

company and were very pleased with the proposal offered. It is estimated that we will save

120.5 tonnes of carbon emissions annually by making this move. On top of the environmental

benefits, Powershop has a real time app, which we will be able to use with the students to log

our usage and monitor areas and ways for improvement.
