Dear Reader, Welcome to this new issue of Infosylva! The Second Asia-Pacific Urban Forestry Meeting (APUFM), co-organized by FAO and partners in Seoul, Korea, culminated in a Plan of Action which intends to enable Asia-Pacific countries to contribute through urban forestry to achieving the SDGs, particularly SDG 11, focusing on making the vast urban areas of the region safe, resilient and sustainable. (In English) A new FAO project in Pakistan, to be carried out over the next five years in collaboration with the Ministry of Climate Change and local forest authorities, aims to reverse deforestation and forest degradation in the country by enhancing resilience through the planting of chilgoza pine. Not only does this pine species represent a good mitigation option for dry, temperate ecological zones, it also has the potential to support local livelihoods, by providing non-timber forest products and fuel wood. (In English) In the framework of the Forest and Farm Facility Programme (FFF), FAO has recently signed Letters of Agreements with some Forest and farm Producer Organizations (FFPOs) in the Gambia. Their aim is to support the livelihoods and productive activities of the members of local communities in the country, with small grants. (In English)

Finland has always scored high in terms of innovation in education. A new educational project called “School on the move”, encourages children to move more and to learn in Nature for a period of time during the day. (In French) A long-term project in the Ecuadorian Amazon has recently been launched by the government so Ecuador can comply with the SDG agenda towards 2030. The Integral Amazon Programme for Forest Conservation and Sustainable Production intends to promote the sustainable development of this important environment, while ensuring its conservation. (In Spanish) FAO hosted a meeting of the GlobBiomass Project earlier this month, gathering together over 60 experts from more than 20 countries. The aim of the meeting was to improve and expand the already existing information on the distribution of forest above-ground biomass (AGB), especially in relation to its carbon stock storage. Accurate data in this area is crucial for the sustainable management of forests, upon which many people and communities worldwide depend for their livelihoods and wellbeing. New FAO publications Brief outlook on forestry, wildlife and protected areas in the Eastern Africa subregion The FAO Subregional Office for Eastern Africa (SFE) provides support to FAO country programmes in Burundi, Djibouti, Ethiopia, Kenya, Rwanda, Somalia, South Sudan and Uganda. SFE’s mission is to support participatory and sustainable forest management in order to enhance economic, social and environmental well-being in Eastern Africa. The goal is for forestry to contribute to national GDP in the subregion, and at the same time mitigate the effects of climate change and reduce forest degradation. FAO’s pivotal role in Natural Resource Management in Eastern Africa Many studies have indicated serious environmental problems in Eastern Africa, which include: degradation of forest trees and rangelands, the loss of biodiversity, land degradation, overfishing and coastal degradation, desertification, climate change, water scarcity and illegal hunting. These problems underline the importance of effective management of natural resources. Smallholder forest producer organizations in a changing climate The increasing severity of climate impacts and the vulnerability of rural populations in developing countries mean that smallholders need support in transforming their livelihoods for climate-smart landscapes. Central organizations, networks and other secondary-level organizations of forest producers are well placed to provide such support. Miscellaneous Wangari Maathai Forest Champion Award 2017 The Collaborative Partnership on Forests (CPF) is awarding one extraordinary individual for improving our forests and the lives of people who depend on them! Applicants should be nominated by a third party. Nominations will be reviewed by an international jury of renowned personalities, who will also take into consideration such elements as empowering women, youth and civil society, fostering social commitment, promoting networks and improving the valuation of forests in society. The call aims at collecting lessons learned and recommendations for the use of information and communication technologies – digital technologies – in agriculture initiatives in Europe and Central Asia, and sharing them among members and followers of the e-agriculture Community of Practice and beyond. The good or promising practice you wish to document should be about the use of ICTs for agriculture, livestock, fisheries, forestry or rural development in general, and it can cover a wide range of topics such as the value chain, agrometeorological information, or precision agriculture. Launch of: The State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World 2017 On 15 September 2017, FAO, the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), and the UN World Food Program (WFP), the United Nations Children's Emergency Fund (UNICEF) and the World Health Organization (WHO) – published the first-ever consolidated UN report on progress towards eradicating hunger and malnutrition by 2030. This new edition gives updated estimates of the number and proportion of hungry people on the planet and includes data for the global, regional, and national levels. This is the first time that UNICEF and WHO join FAO, IFAD and WFP in preparing the annual report. This change reflects the new Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) broader view on hunger and all forms of malnutrition.
