The LP's debut single, Hang On To Your Love, went Top 20, and established the young singer as one of Britain's most exciting contributions to the '80s music scene. The Diamond Life LP, produced by Robin Millar, remains in the Top 20 on the RPM 100 album survey after 13 weeks of charting. Epic product is distributed in Canada by CBS Records. Sade (pronounced shar-DAY) was born in a village near Lagos, Nigeria of a Nigerian father and an English mother. When her parents separated, her mother took Sade and her brother to England. Her mother remar- ried, and Sade's high school years were spent in a seaside village. At 17, she left home, go- ing to London to study fashion. After corn- pleting a 3-yr. course, she designed and made clothes, supplementing her income with modelling jobs. "I got into it (fashion design) because I like to draw," Sade has said. "I liked the creative part. But you really have to think about business first and foremost. I never liked that part of it. I don't miss it. I wouldn't go back to it, never in a million years." In 1981, the manager of a London - based funk band, Pride, offered Sade a gig as a backing vocalist. She auditioned, and was turned down. Shortly after, she was asked again. This time she accepted, "to help them out." On a song called Smooth Operator, Sade (nee Helen Folasade Adu) would sing lead. The song was in jazzy contrast to Pride's funky set. Ultimately, Sade and three members of Pride worked out a short set of material on their own that was more suitable to Sade's supple, soothing vocal. The band - eventually to be known as Sade - opened for Pride at Ronnie Scott's legendary jazz club in London. Sade eventually expanded to include seven members. The current lineup is Sade (vocals), Stuart Matthewman (sax, guitar), Andrew Hale (keyboards), and Paul S. Den- man (bass). For the LP, the band was bolstered by drummer Dave Early and per- cussionist Martin Ditcham. Sade co -wrote all of Diamond Life's songs, most of them with Stuart Matthewman. The LP received the "album of the year" designa- tion at Britain's equivalent of the Grammys last year. In Canada, Diamond Life is well on its way to platinum status - sales of 100,000 units or more. Sade's recent comments in a telephone interview with The Globe and Mail's Liam Lacey seem to indicate a com- mitment to quality and longevity in her career. "There was nothing self-conscious about this 'return to elegance' thing that I've been labelled with; it's just me," she said. "I don't wear spiky green and orange hair because that's what everyone wears now, and I'd feel stupid in it. My music is understated . . . I like to get up in the morning and dress in a way that makes me feel confident. I like to listen to music that sounds as though it was made to last." As a young girl, Sade was preoccupied with American soul - primarily Marvin Gaye. Other, older artists also in- terested her: Frank Sinatra, Count Basie, and Dinah Washington. Her love for these artists comes through loud and clear on Diamond Life - an LP encompassing lounge -jazz, pop, and heartfelt soul. It is hoped that North Americans will be able to see - and hear - the magic of Sade by summer's end. A final comment from the Globe interview: "I'm a big believer in things that last - books, buildings or songs. Like the Chrysler building, you know. Nobody says, that's so '30s . . . it just looks good to generation after generation, and it will look good forever." So with Sade. -KCW

Ontario Sales Tax bite relinquished for Tears

In a rare display of charity the Ontario Government has added the weight of its Sales

Tax revenue to the Northern Lights for Africa (Society). It's expected that more than

$100,000 in provincial sales tax revenue can be raised through the sales of the Tear Are

Not Enough single. The announcement was made by the Province's Treasurer Larry

Grossman. Fortunately the plan won't add a book-

keeping problem for retailers who will con- tinue to charge the 7 percent tax on the Tears

single, as well as the We Are The World (USA For Africa) LP and cassette, which

contains the Tears track. The province will donate the total tax collected to the Ethiopian

    fund.

U.S. CD decline affects Canada Inconsistent output of finished CD product

at Indiana's Digital Audio Disk Corporation is impacting on CD availability in Canada for

CBS Records, who run the plant, as well as other major labels. In the U.S., this has

meant long-term unavailability for product such as Billy Joel, Cyndi Lauper, and Bruce

Springsteen. "Canada is certainly affected," says Don

Oates, Vice -President of Sales and Marketing for CBS. "Our understanding at this time is

that things are turning around . . . by mid to

late May of this year we should see real evidence of that happening." At present,

there are three CD plants in the world: the CBS facility in Indiana; Sony/CBS in Japan; and Philips/Polygram in Europe. Shipments

from Japan are currently slowed due to domestic demand there. Canadian sources

place the cost of building a CD plant in this country as high as $4 million.

Gowan promo package shipped to radio

CBS Records has released a two -record "radio only" package that includes a copy of

Columbia recording artist Gowan's 2nd LP for the label, entitled Strange Animal, and a

produced radio special on the artist. A Criminal Mind, the LP's debut single, has

entered the Top 10 on the RPM 100 singles survey. Side 1 of the interview disc contains

the complete half-hour special, while Side 2 is a collection of 22 individually banded and

timed clips. Radio stations can construct their own special, or otherwise utilize the segments

according to their programming needs. The media special was conceived and written by

Bob Mackowycz of Toronto's Q-107 FM outlet, and produced by Len Naemark. The

set's jacket contains all in -out cue informa- tion required. Kim Zayac, National Promo- tion Manager for CBS, tells RPM that the

package was "pre -planned as a segue between Gowan's 1st and 2nd singles." The label is set

to release the title track as the 2nd single from the Strange Animal LP. "I played some

tracks for Bob (Mackowycz), and he was definitely into the material," says Zayac.

"He's an intelligent programmer and reviewer - and I've worked with him before.

I think we've created a very good profile of the artist." The Strange Animal LP is Top 20 on the RPM 100 album survey. The album

was produced in England by David Tickle, and features vocalist/keyboardist Gowan

backed by members of Peter Gabriel's band. The promotional package's jacket also

features the original artwork from Strange Animal as well as Dimo Safari's photos of Gowan. Strange Animal recently attained

gold status (sales of 50,000 or more) in Canada.

Toronto FM race is on . !!The battle for Toronto's new FM band isgoing to be a tough one - and it's going togo right down to the wire. I wouldn't evenwant to hazard a guess as to who will bethe winner . . . not in print anyway. I'llgo out on the limb only this far: the choiceis between 2 big, big biggies.

Rumours! Rumours! Rumours! This business is filled with them. Did you

To counter the city's two localnewspapers and other local media, the stationpublished a Summer Flyer, to be released intime for the Spring BBM. The client responsewas apparently more than had been an-ticipated resulting in a flyer that "turned outto be 56 pagers and tabloid size." They alsoworked in their major BBM promotion - alucky number on the front cover - numbersaired hourly - listeners have 10 minutes and50 seconds to call in and qualify for a 2 -weektrip for 2 to Hawaii. The flyer also tied -infeatured Weekend Music Specials using thetheme Here Comes Summer. Naturally therewas lots of station ID and promotion ex-posure and paid advertising. CD's and singlesboost Rhythms imageRhythms, the distributor headed by PresidentDominique Zgarka, currently operates na-tionally with branches in Toronto and Mon-treal.

The firm began four years ago as a Cana-dian 7" and 12" singles rack -jobber and one -stop, dealing with chain stores and indepen-dent outlets nationally.

"Three years ago, we expanded," saidZgarka, "to include records of all configura-tions, from all countries, and in all musicstyles, and increased our customer base to in-clude such chains as Sam The Record Man,A&A Records and Tapes, and Music World. Two years ago, with the help of SonyCanada, we began handling compact discsfor resale to audio stores. We have nowdeveloped a network of 500 audio stores, aswell as the majority of the independent andchain stores in Canada. As a natural exten-sion of having developed this massivecustomer base, a year and a half ago, wedecided to expand into distributing Canadianand foreign labels on an exclusive basis."

Rhythms currently has a threefold positionin the Canadian marketplace: distribution -23 labels under license including the CBC'sSM5000 line; rack -jobber - racking productfrom all the major Canadian labels for sub -distribution to over 100 independentlyoperated record stores that are not servicedby any of the major record companies;audiophile distributor - the firm was thefirst in Canada to sell a compact disc, andcontinues to service approximately 500 storesnationwide.

Zgarka adds: "1985 will see Rhythms ex-pand mainly in the distribution field. A re-cent major acquisition, the CBC SM5000series, begins that expansion in a mostfavourable way."

Heavy Capitol promo for Cancon acts PROMO PROFILE

    by Sarah Norris -

National Press & Publicity Capitol Records

Strange Advance's 2W0 has hit gold status in Canada, selling over 50,000 copies. The first

single, We Run, continues to do well on the charts. The video for the single, directed by

Rob Quartly of Champagne Pictures, has just been released. It features the lineup that

Strange Avance will be taking on the road

with them in May. The U.K., Germany, and several European

territories have com- mitted to 2W0 for future release, with a

U.S. release slated for May. Heredity is Cap- itol's debut album by

Rational Youth. Their first single, No More And No Less, was a top add at radio the first

week out. Although singer/writer Tracey Howe has replaced the band's electro-pop

sounds with an earthier sound, we are an- ticipating strong support from radio and

retail. A video of No More And No Less, directed by Ron Berti of Champagne Pic-

tures, has been completed, and Rational

CD's and singles boost Rhythms image Rhythms, the distributor headed by President

Dominique Zgarka, currently operates na- tionally with branches in Toronto and Mon-

treal. The firm began four years ago as a Cana-

dian 7" and 12" singles rack -jobber and one - stop, dealing with chain stores and indepen- dent outlets nationally.

"Three years ago, we expanded," said Zgarka, "to include records of all configura-

tions, from all countries, and in all music styles, and increased our customer base to in- clude such chains as Sam The Record Man, A&A Records and Tapes, and Music World. Two years ago, with the help of Sony

Canada, we began handling compact discs for resale to audio stores. We have now

developed a network of 500 audio stores, as well as the majority of the independent and

chain stores in Canada. As a natural exten- sion of having developed this massive

customer base, a year and a half ago, we decided to expand into distributing Canadian

and foreign labels on an exclusive basis." Rhythms currently has a threefold position

in the Canadian marketplace: distribution - 23 labels under license including the CBC's

SM5000 line; rack -jobber - racking product from all the major Canadian labels for sub -

distribution to over 100 independently operated record stores that are not serviced

by any of the major record companies; audiophile distributor - the firm was the

first in Canada to sell a compact disc, and continues to service approximately 500 stores

nationwide. Zgarka adds: "1985 will see Rhythms ex-

pand mainly in the distribution field. A re- cent major acquisition, the CBC SM5000

series, begins that expansion in a most favourable way."

Youth will tour. The title track from Luba's Secrets And Sins LP is the album's 3rd single.

It follows the success of the gold Let It Go, and the pensive Storm Before The Calm. We

have released an incredible album by Frank Mills, entitled The Traveler. Through his

    magical melodies, this extraordinary pianist

takes us to several points around the world. We are also gearing up to release the debut

album by Bamboo - a new signing to the Court date in

Steinhoff case The copyright interests of as many as nine

Canadian record labels are alleged to be af- fected in a case wherein R. Steinhoff

Wholesale Inc. of Woodstock, Ont., and Richard Steinhoff each face 110 charges

under Section 25 of Canada's Copyright Act. The label's allegedly affected are Capitol -

EMI, CBS, MCA, Quality, Polygram, RCA,

WEA, A&M, and Attic. The case took shape when the RCMP's London, Ont. detachment

(in conjunction with Patrick Fox, Dir. of In- vestigative Services for CRIA) executed a

search warrant at the Steinhoff warehouse in Oct. 1984. Approximately 30,000 pieces of

imported record and cassette product were seized. The charges mentioned above involve

manufactured and imported cassettes and LPs from various countries. It is alleged that,

in dealing with the product, the defendants infringed the Canadian copyright interests of Canadian record company members of

CRIA, the Canadian Recording Industry Association.

Richard Steinhoff was present for a brief court appearance on Apr. 15 in Woodstock,

and is slated to appear in court again on May 6. A trial could take place as late as

    September of this year.

label. The members of this act hail from Peterborough. We foresee Power Station as

being a smash success. Ashford & Simpson's Solid single has gone gold. George

Thorogood will be touring Canada soon. Anne Murray, with Bruce Murray as her

special guest, will headline Toronto's O'Keefe Centre in May. We are releasing the Hiding From Love single from Bruce. The single's video was produced by Tony Tobias.

Looking at Aquarius Records, Corey Hart's First Offense has sold a quarter of a million

records in Canada. Corey is finishing his follow-up LP, a record he is co -producing

with Jon Astley and Phil Chapman. Anthem's Coney Hatch has been playing Canadian dates non-stop since the release of

the Friction LP. Show reviews have been positive.

    Rockline program readied by TBS

Telemedia Broadcasting Systems (TBS) has announced the formation of a new satellite

radio network to provide affiliate radio sta- tions with music specials and live programm-

ing on a regular basis. According to Paul J. Williams, the

system's Vice -President of Marketing, the first program to debut on the network in ear-

ly April will be Rockline. A successful U.S. program for the last four years, Rockline has

been adapted for North America. The format presents a guest artist's music while allowing listeners to call in and talk live with the artist

via an '800' number. Says Williams: "What we essentially have

accomplished is that Canadian calls will now be integrated into the weekly 90 -min. pro-

gram. Canadian artists will also be regularly featured guests, and we will even originate a number of Rockline programs from some of

our Canadian affiliate studios." KLOS Los Angeles radio personality Bob Coburn will be Rockline's host. The program

will air live via satellite Monday evenings at 11:30 PM EST.

    Congratulations TRIUMPH

    and

    PEPSI -COLA CANADA LTD. on

your most successful Canadian tour to date!

Vulture Culture gold for Parsons Vulture Culture, the Arista LP release by

Alan Parsons Project, has gone gold in Canada (50,000 units sold). The album hit the

magic number after only 6 weeks on release. A second release, Days Are Numbers, will

ship Apr. 15. Vulture Culture is Parsons' ninth LP since forming a partnership with Eric Woolfson in 1974.

New Cohen LP from Columbia Leonard Cohen has come out of seclusion

with the release of his new Columbia album, Various Positions, his first in five years. He

will also be available for interviews. The LP was produced by John Lissauer at New

York's Quadrasonic Sound, and features Jennifer Warnes on additional vocals. Cohen

also handles guitar on the session. His last album, Recent Songs, was released in 1980.

Music Director nod for Wright Priscilla Wright's Paylode single, Heartbeat,

made an impression on The Music Director, the respected U.S. A/C programming ser-

vice. Her single, distributed by Frank Fara's Kansas -based Comstock Records, scored No.

3 on the New Singles This Week section. The

single is also gaining favour with Canadian A/C programmers, several of which

    subscribe to the Music Director.

New Loverboy underway A new Loverboy LP, their first in almost 3

years, is currently being produced by Tom Allen At Vancouver's Little Mountain Sound

and Mushroom studios. Jeff Burns, Vice President A&R for CBS Records Canada,

tags the band's sound as "more aggressive and updated with the times in style and pro-

duction." A tour is now being pencilled in for August. Meat Loaf releases on RCA Meat Loaf returns to the business with Bad

Attitude, his first album for RCA, the release label for North America. He releases in the U.K. on the Arista label. The new set, pro-

duced by Meat Loaf, Mack and Paul Jacobs, contains a duet with Who vocalist Roger Daltrey. Modern Girl will be released as the

first single. Meat Loaf's Bat Out Of Hell, released on Columbia, his previous release

label, attained diamond (1 million units sold) in Canada.

Gaye tribute released by CBS CBS is readying the release of Dream Of A

Lifetime, the last studio album from the late Marvin Gaye. The LP was recorded shortly before his death. Sanctified Lady will be the

first single, issued as a 7" and 12". Katrina & Waves make comeback

In view of U.S. action on the Capitol release of Walking On Sunshine by Katrina & The

Waves, several Canadian radio stations are now adding the single which was originally

released on the Attic label in Canada in August of last year. The single was taken

from the group's self -titled U.S. release, a reworking of songs from their first 2 albums,

Walking On Sunshine and Katrina & The Waves 2. "The songs were re-recorded from

    RPM -

    April 27, 1985 -

the ground up," explained Attic's Ralph Alfonso. "Capitol wanted them re-recorded

and the band felt they could improve on the sound. Because it's clicking in the States,

response here is stronger and the song sounds better. The American action is really

helping." Alfonso concludes with, "Now everyone knows who the band is." The Cam-

bridge, Ontario -based quartet, fronted by Katrina Leskanich (lead vocals and guitar),

have just completed a successful European tour, and are putting together a Canadian tour for May.

IDLE EYES - PopIdle Eyes -WEA -25-17511-PA new Canadian signing to WEA, Idle Eyespossess a clean pop/white reggae soundfocussed on lead vocalist Tad Campbell.Herein might lie a problem though, asCampbell's stark warble coupled with GlennSmith's tremolo -laden guitars reminds oneall too easily of Men At Work's Colin Hay.Lyrically, the songs are occasionally repeti-tive, addressing love, treason, and danger.Perhaps the band can shoot for a moreautonomous stance on future outings.
