BLACKHEREFORDS
EXPECTED PROGENY DIFFERENCES (EPDs) All of the Black Hereford cattle in this sale are registered in the American Black Hereford Association. Transfers are included in the purchase price. The EPDs are from the ABHA. The new ABHA Calving Ease and scrotal size EPDs should be available soon. An EPD is the difference in expected performance of future progeny of an individual, compared with expected performance of future progeny of an individual of average genetic merit. They are reported in units of measurement for each trait (e.g. lbs., cm., etc.)
PRODUCTION EPDS: Calving Ease Direct (CE): Predict the average difference in ease with which a sire’s calves will be born when bred to first-calf heifers. Expressed as percentage of unassisted births with a higher value indicating greater calving ease. Birth Weight EPD (BW): BW EPDs are expressed in pounds and predict the average difference that can be expected in an animal’s offspring when compared with another animal in the same genetic evaluation. Birth weight EPDs are primarily used as an indicator of calving ease, with the age and size of the females to be bred usually dictating how much birth weight can be tolerated. Weaning Weight EPD (WW): EPDs are expressed in pounds and predict the average differences in weight that can be expected between the progeny of animals in the same genetic evaluation at 205 days of age. Weaning Weight EPDs do not account for differences in weaning weight that are due to milk. Yearling Weight EPD): YW EPDs are expressed in pounds and predict the average differences that can be expected between the progeny of animals at one year of age.
MATERNAL EPDSMaternal Milk EPD (M): Milk EPDs are expressed as pounds of calf weaned by a bull’s daughters. They reflect the average differences in weaning weight that can be expected in grand progeny due to the milking ability of a bull’s daughters. Available feed resources will dictate the extent to which milking ability should be selected. Scrotal Size EPD (SC): Studies have shown that there is a direct correlation between scrotal size measured in centimeters in bulls and the fertility of daughters out of those bulls. Bulls with larger testicles sire daughters that reach puberty and begin cycling earlier.

We are very proud of the genetic progress we are making. In order to turn the gen-erations faster we are completely dispersing all our registered cows born in 2010 and 2011. These cows are in their prime. They have survived our culling process and represent the best of our performance based breeding program.
We are also selling 5 bulls we have used in our registered breeding program. They represent the latest in Black Hereford genetics and are the future leaders of our breed. They sell with full possession and full semen sale rights unless otherwise announced on sale day. We will retain a ¼ interest in each bull for our own in-herd use.
Our commercial bred heifers represent the end point of our efforts. Each has been pelvic sized, synchronized and AI bred to the great JN Balder A426 ET calving ease bull. They were then pasture exposed to Black Hereford Bulls that averaged 72 lbs. actual BW, with EPDs of CE 10.8 and BW of 1.1. Last year, 96% of our commer-cial heifers calved and nursed unassisted.

• This outstanding 1146 cow is in the breed’s top 25% for BW, top 10% for WW and top 15% for YW. Her calves have an average of 699 lbs. at weaning. Great udder. Maybe the best cow in the sale. She is the dam of our JN Balder B146 herd bull. We probably should have set her up as a donor cow like we did with Lot 27. She is bred to the Lot 4 bull.

All of our commercial heifers will calve starting the second week in February. They have been AI’d to this highly proven calving ease bull, JN Balder A426 ET. They were then turned out in a multi-sire pasture with all calving ease Black Hereford bulls, who themselves had an average actual BW of 72 lbs. and a CE of +10.8 and a BW of +1.1. Ninety-six percent (96%) of our commercial bred heifers calved and nursed unassisted this past spring. We have raised Lot 42 through 94 on our ranch. Lots 95 through 113 were purchased, then bred to our bulls.
