Welcome to College for Kids! What happens when you mix summer, a college campus, and kids? Lots of serious fun and active learning!

The College for Kids program at Northwestern Michigan College in Traverse City, Michigan, stimulates and nurtures the minds of young people ages 3–17 with 188 learning options. The 8-week program is designed for highly motivated students to explore an area of interest; parents should read descriptions carefully to find the best fit. Most classes are formatted in a week of 4 or 5 half days. One week, Kids on Campus week – July 22-26, offers an optional supervised lunch break (bring your brown bag lunch) and lets you choose morning and afternoon classes for full days of fun (see page 18).

Go on a nature walk in search of bugs then get creative making totally buggin’ art projects like a spider mask and your very own insect collage. Become a budding scientist and learn the magic of color. Work with a variety of materials from finger paints and shaving cream to Cray-pas and glitter. Each day you will make new discoveries about the plants, animals, and foods of the rainforest as we work with art, music, games, stories, and movement. Dancing Feet Creative Movement (Ages 4–6) EEYA123

Spin, stretch, walk, slide—your body wants to move. Let your feet tell stories as you explore different kinds of dance like jazz, ballet, and modern. You’ll learn to stretch like a dancer and balance your body as you leap and twirl. You’ll move to different kinds of music as you create your own dances and make up some with the group. Become a treasure hunter as we search for the hidden treasures of pirates. Our adventure takes place on our own ‘island’ where we’ll create a pirate ship and pirate maps to lead us to lost treasures. You’ll stir, blend, measure, mix, bake and taste your way through good food you can fix at home. Every day has a theme and includes a story and hands-on prep. Uno, dos, tres—let ’s go! Learn words and phrases as you travel to different Spanish-speaking places. Visit a make-believe grocery store and learn your numbers and colors as well as the foods our south-of-the-border friends eat. Our make believe town has a post office where you’ll send a postcard you’ve made to a new Latin-American friend. Are you buggy for bugs? Explore the fascinating world of bugs, insects, spiders, and worms. Choose a character to role play and make yourself a costume. Would you tame a dragon as a pet? Decide as you make your own dragon. Build your castle and a catapult to defend it. Piano Explorers (Grades 1–3) EEYB143

Get off to a great start playing the piano. You’ll learn the names of the notes, and how to count and play rhythms. You’ll even write your own song. Of course there will be pianos, but you’ll also use rhythm instruments and play fun music games. The camp ends with sharing music—solos, duets, and a group piece. July 22–26 (optional) (Age 4–14)If you enroll in a morning and afternoon session the week of July 22, you are invited to join the Lunch Break hour that meets between classes in the Parsons/Stulen Bldg. The kick-back-and-relax supervised hour from noon to 1 p.m. offers time to eat, relax inside or outdoors, and join in recreational options. Junior counselors will help you get to the lunch area and after-noon sessions. Bring a lunch—juice packs provided. (Financial aid is not available for Lunch Break.)

All Aboard the Hogwarts Express (Grades 4–6) EEYG115

Don’t be late! Once you cross platform 9¾, you will be transported to the Hogwarts School for wizardry. Upon arrival, you’ll be “sorted” into houses and whisked away to a week of fun—Harry Potter style. Use your wand to mix potions, play wizard games, and practice Quidditch. All week you’ll earn points in hopes of winning the house cup. How to use ONLINE registration

• Remember that you must use your child’s NMC ID and PASSWORD when using online registration, not your own.

• Every child who has ever taken a class at NMC has an NMC ID.

• If your child has taken classes before at NMC, but you don’t know his/her login information, contact the NMC Technology Help Desk, (231) 995-3020. Once they verify your child’s identity, they can give you your child’s NMC ID and Password.

• If your child is a brand new student, an NMC ID and Password are assigned when you create a new account.

• If you can’t remember whether your child has taken classes before, you may call the Extended Education office at (231) 995-1700 during business hours.

• Your credit card is charged upon comple-tion of the registration process. If you do not pay at the time of registration, the class(es) in your cart will be dropped.

Register earlyRegistration is easy—register online or fill out a registration form, then phone, fax, mail, or stop by the NMC Extended Education (EES) office. Registration begins April 12 and con-tinues throughout the summer. Take as many classes as you like. For additional registration forms, make copies or download them from the website. Full payment is due at the time of registration by credit card/debit card, check, or cash.

Please register by June 10 or at least seven days prior to the start date of the course. Early enrollment is encouraged, as many classes fill quickly. Some classes with low enrollment after June 11 may have to be cancelled.

Upon receipt of registration, students are enrolled in requested classes. Please note the dates, times, and locations of your classes. You will be notified only if changes occur or a class is filled. Written confirmation will be sent if you include a stamped, self-addressed envelope.

RefundsA 100% refund will be given if a request is made (call 995-1700) at least five business days prior to the class start date or if a class is cancelled. If you must drop a class 2 to 4 business days prior to the class start date, you are eligible for a 50% credit toward another College for Kids class, valid for one year. Classes dropped the business day prior to class (usually the Friday before) are not eligible for refund or partial credit. See full refund policy at nmc.edu/kids.

Financial aid scholarshipsLimited funds are available to assist fami-lies meeting low-income requirements. To receive an application, please call Extended Education at (231) 995-1700.1. Financial aid awards typically cover half

the cost of each class for a maximum of three classes per child (as funds allow). Awarded amount does not exceed $60 per class.

3. Upon receipt of all three of the above, students will be enrolled in requested classes. Please call the EES office 5 days after submitting to learn the status of your request. Applicants who are not awarded financial aid can pay the remaining cost or cancel their reserved spaces at least one week prior to the class and receive a full refund of the amount paid.

❑ Inform us at the time of reg-istration if your child has a physical, medical, or learning need so we can assure they have a good experience.

❑ Make sure the teacher and your child have a good phone number to contact you.

❑ Walk younger children to and from the classroom door.

❑ Drop off no earlier than 10 minutes ahead of class time. NMC doesn’t have staffing resources to supervise children who are left early or picked up late. Please be prompt for pick up.
