As we now enter the local elec-tion period and campaigns beginfor city council seats and the of-fice of Mayor, we encourage eve-ryone to remember our foundingprinciples and the reasons mostpeople seek to be elected to pub-lic office, and thats to offer theirrespective leadership skills to

make our community a betterplace to live, work, and raise afamily.

Its always easier to run on a plat-form which singles out what yousee as the mistakes and shortcom-ings of those you seek to unseat. But we encourage all of our can-didates to conduct a campaigncentered around their respectiveideas of what will make our com-munity a better place to live andwork, and how their respectiveleadership will help bring thisabout.

Lets have a campaign season thateveryone can be proud. Letshear from candidates and incum-bents who can run for office with-out name calling, and negativereferences that really serve no

    purpose.

    Dear Member,

We salute those citizens whoserve through elected office andthose seeking to serve. After all, thats what a government for thepeople, by the people is allabout.

Our founding fathers representedall walks of life and in their pur-

suit of happiness, founded thiscountry and government on de-mocratic principles and the freeenterprise system, unlike no othercountry prior to this or since ourfounding in 1776.

With all our faults and humanmistakes not to mention thosewho from time to time forgetthese principles and seek to capi-

talize for themselves, even withall this we remain the greatestcountry in the world and the envyof most. Thomas Jeffersonstated, A wise and frugal gov-ernment, which shall leave menfree to regulate their own pursuitsof industry and improvement, andshall not take from the mouth oflabor the bread it has earned this is the sum of good govern-

    ment.

Who knows, the public may re-spond very positively to such acampaign especially since its sucha rarity.

Lets show the rest of the worldthe value of positive campaign-ing. North Myrtle Beach de-serves it.

    Sincerely,

    R. Marc Jordan, IOM, CCEPresident/CEO

Word of Mouse The Most Empowering Tool of the Third Millennium Marketing

territory and ignore the classic(and expensive) approach. Theseven people she chose to first tellabout the project were carefullyselected among the most well-known and preeminent Harry Pot-

ter fans, very active on Harry Pot-ter-related social media. Every-thing worked as planned, follow-ing a snow ball-effect. The endresult: 350 million people learnedabout the theme park onlythrough online communicationand are anxiously waiting for it toopen.

New Media has created a new

marketing environment where oldrules no longer apply. When youhave a passionate fan base foryour brand, the Internet is espe-cially vital for going viral. Askyourself these questions and donttake no for an answer for thelatter one: who is your fan baseand do you already have one?You might call the people you dorepeat business with familiar

faces or faithful customers andno matter the label, they are in-deed your fan base.

The power of Internet makes iteasier for people to fall in love

Word of mouse is good old-fashioned word of mouth, butwith the ability to spread muchfaster because of the Internet. An-other way to look at it is as adver-tising you don't pay for. Accord-

ing to the marketing-by-the-bookrules, if you had to promote aproduct or an idea, you had topull out your wallet. You had tobuy your way into peoples mind, interrupting their TV shows, us-ing direct marketing and maga-zine ads.

As unbelievable as it might look,a big company (an amusement

park) decided to promote a hugeproject worth billions of dollarsby just initially telling seven peo-ple about it. The outcome of thisstrategy was impressive: 350 mil-lion other people around theworld learned about the amuse-ment park in just a couple ofmonths. The daring company isUniversal Orlando Resort, launching The Wizarding World

    of Harry Potter (planned to comea l i v e i n s p r i n g 2 0 1 0 :www.universalor lando.com/ harrypotter). Cindy Gordon,Vice President of New Media andMarketing Partnerships decidedto walk this uncharted

with you faster. Beware, though it also makes it easier for them tofall out of love with you faster. Its a double-edged sword andyou should listen constantly towhats being said about you. The

best way to find out what peopleare saying about you is to useonline reputation management. The core idea of the concept is tomonitor what people are postingon their blogs.

For decades, the only way tospread our ideas was to buy ex-pensive advertising or beg themedia to write (or broadcast)

about our products and services. This is no longer true. Now wehave a tremendous opportunity topublish great content online -content that people want to con-sume and that they are eager toshare with their friends, family, and colleagues. Word-of-mouse isthe single most empowering toolavailable to marketers today.
