NLR - “Network of Networks”

• Nationwide optical network infrastructure• Underlying fiber optic cable and optical equipment owned by

NLR• Supports equivalent of 40 10Gb links nationwide

• Multiple, diverse experimental and production networks coexist over the same infrastructure

• New level of flexibility - nationwide or site specific infrastructure

• Specifically designed to meet the needs of the network and scientific research community

WaveNet

• WaveNet• OC-192 or 10 GE

• Production, unprotected wavelength• Point-to-Point

• Between any NLR backbone nodes• Cost is based on number of segments in the path

• Examples• PSC’3 3 ETF lambdas• UltraScience Network Initiatve

NLR FrameNet

• Layer 2 Switched Ethernet Network• Based on nationwide 10Gb Ethernet Lambda

• Point-to-point or multipoint Ethernet transport

• Sub-gigabit, gigabit and multi-gigabit data rates

• Additional capacity added as needed• End points at any FrameNet backbone node

• Core services• National Exchange Fabric - shared ethernet service• Point-to-Point - guaranteed bandwidth between two points• Multipoint - VLAN which connects more than two end points
