Proudly Presents

By Heather ShaugerJakelle is the leading scorer on Teaneck’s Girl’s Basket-

ball Team. Currently, she has 373 points in her high school career, with 86 rebounds and 50 assists.

Her family is one of the reasons why she has been able to grow into the player that she is. Had it not been for her mom’s constant encouragement she would not have pur-sued the sport with the passion she has today. She is the only girl among a family of boys. Her brothers also played an important role in her love for the game. Jakelle’s oldest brother, who currently is playing basketball in Texas, is the one who initially inspired her to start playing. Even though she was involved with hip hop and modern dancing, she would watch her brother play basketball on the court and wanted to participate within the sport.

Today, it seems like the sport consumes many aspects of Jakelle’s life. In her spare time, she hangs out with her teammates or is practicing independently from practice.

Not only does she bring her team together on the court, she also works to create team unity off the court. When they are playing poorly, she encourages the team by rap-ping for them or using her sense of humor.

In the future, Jakelle would like to travel overseas to play basketball while pursuing an education in sports medicine or management.

page 3editor@sportsfi tnesswellness.com

By Heather ShaugerAdam treats many aspects of his life with sincerity and a seri-

ous demeanor. His approach to the sport of ice hockey has made him the leading scorer on the Bergen Catholic Ice Hockey Team. He is a leader on and off the ice and helps inspire and coach the younger players on his team.

One of the highlights of his playing career was when his league team, Avalanche, won their league and qualifi ed for nationals. Adam was surprised when his team excelled within the tourna-ment and advanced to the semi-fi nals. In a semi-fi nal game Avalanche won in double over time, which allowed the team to compete within the fi nals. They didn’t win but still placed second within the country.

His father, who is a very infl uential fi gure within his life, encour-ages Adam in all aspects of his life, including ice hockey, pushed him to become a stronger player. He recalls in 2006 when he was cut from a league team that he had anticipated playing on. While he was extremely disappointed and frustrated, he knew that he had to work on his playing ability and skills in order to get back on the team.

His hard work has paid off. He has approximately 30 goals this season so far, and will easily help his team advance when they compete in states in the weeks to come.

In the future, Adam hopes to attend Quinnipiac University, where he wants to major in business. Even though he is unsure as to whether he will play on Quinnipiac’s team, he knows that ice hockey will always be part of his life.

Woods Continuing the Success of Cavos/Owls Wrestling

fan of the cooperative, but that changed.

Since then though several small schools have joined Emerson/Park Ridge as coop programs like Hasbrouck Heights/Wood-Ridge, Palisades Park/Leonia, Becton/Wallington and Glen Rock/Saddle Brook among others.

With the team wrestling season over, Woods hoped to get a couple of wrestlers down to Atlantic City for the state individual fi nals. He has had a few wrestlers make the state fi nal in a weight class, but never a state champion. That is something he still is working on.

For Woods, his love for wrestling started at Roxbury High School in the 1950s even though he only wrestled there in his freshman and sophomore seasons. At that time it was only a club team and he decid-ed to play basketball during his ju-nior and senior seasons. He picked up wrestling at East Stroudsburg University for four years and grad-uated in 1961.

Heading back to New Jersey he wanted to teach and coach wres-tling, and eventually became an assistant coach at Randolph.

After two years at Randolph, his aunt, who was the secretary to the Emerson High School principal at the time, told him about an open-ing at Emerson.

That was in the 1960s and it started an era that is still going. But Woods never thought he would still be coaching as the season turned to 2010-11. “When I started I was a young kid,” said the 71-year-old Woods who has four daughters and one son, Dean, who played football and wrestled at Emerson.

For Woods he keeps going and going at Emerson High School.

By Edward KensikEmerson/Park Ridge veteran

head wrestling coach Stan Woods looks back on his almost half-cen-tury of coaching in the sport and said that his biggest accomplish-ment came back in the 1960s.

A fresh eyed young man came to Emerson via Randolph High School to take over the Emerson High School program during the school year of 1967-68.

In the infancy of the sport at the Bergen County school, the team that year went 9-3 and won a league title with a team that had little if any wrestling knowledge. “They were all guys who played football and did not know wres-tling,” said Woods.

More than 40 years later, Woods

is still going strong and is now the New Jersey state record holder for coaches with 604 wins and broke the record held by Ralph Ross of Highland Regional of 601 wins. For the 2010-11 season his team fi n-ished with a 19-3 record. He reached the milestone of 600 victories on February 3 with a 72-3 victory over Tenafl y.

While some of the bigger power-houses in wrestling have a large group of grapplers wrestle year- round, almost all of his wrestlers play other sports like junior Steven Schneider who is the Cavos quarter-back. Woods has received wrestlers like sophomore Dallas Ulychich who played football in his freshman season, but has since dropped the sport, but for the vast majority of

the Cavos/Owls wrestlers like Sch-neider, the sport is not a 12-month endeavor.

Unfortunately his team fell short of a Group 1 North 1 state title by losing to Kittatinny, 40-22, in the semi-fi nals.

Over the more than 40 years at Emerson and now Emerson/Park Ridge he has accumulated 31 league championships and eight state sectional titles.

While the wins in wrestling are nice, his biggest gratifi cation from his years of coaching came from former wrestlers who were able to use their experience on the mat in various fi elds.

“I had a student who was number one in his class at Emerson go on to MIT and said that his experience of not winning every match helped him,” recalls Woods. “He went from the best at Emerson to just one of the students at MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology). He said that wrestling taught him even if you lose, you can go back out there and keep on trying and that helped him at MIT.”

The veteran Emerson/Park Ridge head coach added that he also re-ceived feedback from Emerson graduates who went into the military and were in Iraq and Afghanistan. “They would tell me that if they can make it through the wrestling room that they could make it out there,” said Woods.

While many will point to Woods’ coaching as the key to the Cavos success, he said that a big key to the success of the program is the junior wrestling programs in Emerson and Park Ridge.

He did help start the Emerson ju-nior program in the 70s. “Some of the fathers came to me to start a junior program,” said Woods. “I said that would be great and I would be happy to do it.”

Along with the junior programs at the adjacent towns, another factor over the years has been the coop-erative agreement with Park Ridge that came about in 1989 as the Park Ridge High School program could barely fi eld a team and Emerson’s numbers were also dropping.

At fi rst Woods was not the biggest

Silver knows there is more to his team than one dominating center.

“If teams are going to focus on the inside,” Silver said. “Then we are going to take what they give us.”

IHA turned to their outside shooters to make up for the lost production inside. Freshman, Izzy McMahon, did everything she could coming off the bench to keep the game close.

“She is an outstanding shooter,” said Silver. “As she becomes more comfortable on the fl oor we look to her to pick up the slack.”

McMahon hit a pair of three’s at the end of the fi rst half to keep her team within striking distance; heading to the break trailing 21-17. Then, she hit an-other pair of three’s in the fourth quarter to help her team take

their fi rst lead since the early minutes of the 1st quarter.

“I have worked so hard to get here,” said McMahon, a Clarkstown, New York native, who fi nished the game with 12 points. “Just because we are here doesn’t mean I can stop. I have to work even harder now.”

Ramapo dominated every quarter except that last one. All game Halejian struggled to land

shots and she ended the fi rst half with a dismal 2-12 shoot-ing. She fi nished the game with only 12 points, well below her season average.

“It was just one of those days,” said Ramapo head coach Sandy Gordon. “As a team we didn’t shoot par-ticularly well either, on top of shooting horrendously from

Immaculate Heart Academy (22-0) hasn’t lost a game all season. But Ramapo, who came into Saturday’s game at Ramapo College with one of North Jersey’s best players, senior guard Sarah Halejian, and a solid 19-2 record, didn’t care—despite losing to IHA 52-47 earlier in the season.

IHA’s game plan all season has been simple: get the ball to junior center Raquel Scott, whose powerful body has commanded the boards all season. Ramapo’s goal then also was easy: eliminate the passing lanes to Scott. And Ramapo’s six-foot one-inch ju-nior center Kasey Woetzel did just that; keeping Scott to only

team,” said Holy Angels head coach Sue Liddy. “We knew what their pace was going to be.”

The game got off to a blazing start. Both teams exploded up and down the court with numerous takeaways and fast breaks. Teaneck wreaked hav-oc on the boards, with senior center Olivia Logan and fresh-man Kayla Gibbs dominating the rebounding.

But the big star was Tean-eck’s junior guard Jakelle-King Gilchrist, who fi nished the fi rst half with 20 points and gave her team a comfortable 11 point lead going into the break.

When both teams came out to start the second half, how-ever, it was AHA that carried the intensity.

“The second half we ran the game plan the way it was sup-posed to be run,” said Liddy. “There is a way to take care of their pressure and if you can take care of their pressure and take care of the ball you are go-ing to get layups.”

The star on the other side of the court was sophomore guard Melanie Lockett. Her second half performance proved to be

too much for Teaneck.“We came out with so much

energy,” said Lockett, who fi n-ished the game with 33 points and went 16-18 on the free throw line. “Nobody believed that we could beat Teaneck and we had to prove to every-body that we could. They are really fast but we just had to slow down the game and play our game.”

Holy Angels outscored Tean-eck 22-6 in the 3rd quarter to take their fi rst lead of the game. Seniors Jaclyn Jerkovich and Kasheema Besley combined for 24 points, and sophomore Amanda Fields dominated the boards, taking away the con-trol that Teaneck had in the fi rst half.

However, Teaneck refused to go down quietly. They battled back in the 4th quarter and a critical offensive rebound and layup by Logan with less than 10 seconds to play sent the game into overtime.

In overtime, Teaneck scored fi rst, but then Lockett took over. She went seven for seven from

the free throw line, giving up critical opportunities to put the game out of reach.

After the game, McMa-hon and her IHA teammates took a seat in the stands to watch the next game and get a glimpse of their Jamboree fi nals opponents.

HOLY ANGELS STUN TEANECK WITH 78-70

WIN IN OVERTIME

A year ago, Teaneck (19-1) suffered a heart breaking loss to the Academy of Holy An-gels (19-3) in the semi-fi nals of the Bergen County Jamboree. This year, in front of a packed crowd at Ramapo College, Te-aneck had one thing in mind—payback.

But nobody said getting re-venge would be easy. And despite out rebounding, out stealing and out scoring AHA in the fi rst half, their lack of en-durance caught up with them by the end of the game.

“I kept telling them today: you are the better conditioned

the free throw line and fi nished the overtime period with 11 points and helped her team cap off a 78-70 victory.

IHA AND AHA TO MEET FOR THE 4TH TIME

The upcoming Jamboree fi nals matchup between IHA and AHA has the making of a potential classic. This will be the fourth time the two teams have played each other this season, with IHA holding an impressive 3-0 record.

“We know each other very well,” says Liddy. “There are no secrets.”

If AHA can play as aggres-sive as they played against Teaneck, they have a great chance of pulling off the up-set. The game will be played at 2:00p.m. February 26th at Ramapo College.

“Everyone thinks we are the underdogs,” says Lockett. “If you beat a team three times it doesn’t matter. Only the next game matters.”

In District VII, Bergen Catholic claimed its 22nd straight team champion-ship while the combined Glen Rock/Saddle Brook program

The Glen Rock/Saddle Brook duo of Joe Guerriero and Matt Dickman both picked up their third District VI gold medals. Bergen Catholic’s Connor Melde repeated as a District VII cham-pion with Bergenfi eld’s Hans Seri named that tournament’s Outstanding Wrestler.

IN THE ZONE WITH MYASIA JACOBS

page 29editor@sportsfi tnesswellness.comellness.com

But beating records and achieving honors is just one aspect of running track that Jacobs loves. Since her sopho-more year at Paramus Catholic, when she immerged as a legiti-mate track star, Jacobs has had the opportunity to travel the world to compete. Last year, she traveled to Singapore to join Team U.S.A. in the Youth Olympics.

“There was like 250 coun-tries and it was like the regular Olympics for our age group,” said Jacob’s, who won the silver medal in the 100-meter and a gold medal in the sprint medley. “That was a really good experi-ence.”

The 17-year-old Paterson na-tive has experienced plenty of success, but it has not affected her jovial attitude. She jokes around with other athletes and her trainer.

But come time for competi-tion, Jacobs knows how to get in the zone.

“The day of my race I’m away in my corner doing my drills and doing my stretches,” she said. “I keep to myself so I can get focused.”

Jacob’s has set numerous per-sonal goals for the rest of this winter season and the upcom-ing spring season.

“I want to fi nish the season off by breaking the record in the 60 meter, again,” Jacobs said. “I want to be the state champ in the 55 and National Champion in the 60. In the spring I want to prepare for the 100 and 200.”

Jacobs’ fun and cheerful atti-tude disguises the superior ath-lete that lies within. Her speed and strength may take her to places few will ever experience. But Jacobs takes everything one meet at a time.

“When I’m on the line I take one deep breath and close my eyes,” she said. “Once that gun goes off, I give it all I got.”

In the Zone with Myasia Jacobswith Myasia JacobsBy Dan Cappello

Less than a week after set-ting a New Jersey record in the 60-meter dash with a 7.41 seconds performance, Myasia Jacobs returned to running drills and preparing for her next competition. Her fi n-ish in the 60 meter not only broke a state record, it’s also the best fi nish in the country this year. Not bad, especially when you consider that she accomplished this after fl y-ing 18 hours to Osaka, Japan to compete with the U.S. Ju-nior National Team in a Ger-many-Japan-USA Trilateral Friendly.

She may arguably become the most decorated and ac-complished track athlete New Jersey has ever seen.

But running wasn’t always something she longed to do. In fact, if it wasn’t for her mother, she would have spent more time running away from the sport than embracing it.

“At fi rst I didn’t want to do it,” said the junior from Paramus Catholic.“Then my mother made me, but I still didn’t like it. But then freshman year I started liking it more after I won states. I love it now.”

Jacob’s is the fourth girl in New Jersey history to repeat as Meet of Champions winner in the 100 and 200 meter. She holds the second best record in the 100-meter dash with an 11.48 seconds fi nish.

On top of all the records, she received 2009 and 2010 All County 1st Team honors for her performance in both in-door and outdoor track. She is the indoor state group cham-pion in the 55-meter and 400-meter; and the AAU National Champion in the 100-meter dash. Colleges are salivating at the chance to sign her, and those schools include the pow-erhouses of Oregon, Florida and LSU.

By Dan CappelloWe all have busy schedules.

Maybe you are a working mom or full-time parent with a com-plete load of soccer games and Boy Scout meetings and you just don’t have time to exer-cise. We understand how you feel. There never seems to be enough hours in a day to get everything accomplished, es-pecially when it comes to your mental and physical health.

Exercise has proven that it is an effective way to keeping

your mind and body feeling vibrant and healthy. But who has time to go to the gym ev-ery day? Not you, right? Well, forget the gym. There are enormous benefi ts to just tak-ing a walk.

Walking can help you keep your blood pressure down. It can fend off diabetes and heart disease. It can even help al-leviate stress. And it doesn’t take a lot of walking to get the benefi ts.

If you are a full-time mom, try fi nding another mom in your neighborhood to team up with. Pick a time to meet every day to go for a nice healthy stroll. Maybe you can walk to pick up your kids at school together, or just around the neighborhood. Start small by walking for 30 minutes and increase your time every week.

Yes, it is easier to just kick open the back door and let your dog run around in the backyard. But take 15 min-utes in the morning and eve-ning to walk your dog around the neighborhood. This is a great way to start and end your day. Plus, your dog will love you even more.

SPORT

By Dan CappelloGetting your family to eat healthier has to start in your kitch-

en. Forget about what restaurants are the healthiest or what the best fast food choices are, if you want to get you and your family on the right track to better health, it begins at home.

Getting your family to eat healthier won’t be an easy task. It takes time and patience. But by incorporating these tips slowly into your families eating habits you will be changing their lives forever.

5 Tips Mince Vegetables

Pull out your food processor, swipe the dust off of it and throw in the veggies. It can be diffi cult to get kids to eat their vegetables. But by mincing them you can add vegetables to nearly everything. Mix it into soup, mashed potatoes, pasta sauce and even add it to the top of pizza!

Fruit with BreakfastCereals, waffl es and pancakes are fi lled with sugar, carbs and calo-ries. If your family is used to eating only these items for breakfast, it may be hard to get them to change. But try cutting their breakfast meals in half and offer fruit to make up the difference. Freshly cut strawberries and bananas are fi lling and go well with most breakfast meals. Also blueberries go well in cereal and yogurt and they are fi lled

with heart-healthy antioxidants.

Half Turkey and Half Beef

Let’s face it, one of the easiest meals to please an entire family is the American classic—the hamburger. Now, you may not get your family to make the immediate switch from beef to turkey, but start with half and half. Using a package of ground beef and ground turkey, make your own burger paddies using half of each kind of meat. Your family won’t notice the difference and before you know it you can eliminate that fatty beef altogether.

Eat Whole WheatSwitching from a white loaf of bread to whole wheat is not enough. There are whole wheat waffl es, bagels, pasta, wraps and more. Get rid of white bread and train your family that whole wheat is the only way.

One Seafood Dinner a Week This may be the hard one. Not every family is used to eating sea-food on a regular basis. But try designating one dinner a week to a seafood meal. Try different recipes and diverse kinds of seafood, such as tilapia, cod and salmon. Seafood is fi lled with omega-3 fatty acids and protein and is an important part to a healthy diet.

Here are fi ve tips that can help you get started.
