Track Santa Around The World This Christmas EveThe NORAD Tracks
Santa Web site is theform of a publicrelations program by the
North American Aero-space Defense Com-mand (NORAD). Everyyear for over fifty years
on Christmas EveNORAD has told storiesof how their powerfultracking systems such asthe Distant Early Warn-ing Line (DEW Line)detected Santa Clausleaving the North Pole to
deliver his presents.In 1955, a Colorado
Springs-based Searsstore ran an advertise-ment encouragingchildren to call SantaClaus on a specialtelephone hotline.Due to a printing error,
the phone number thatwas printed was thehotline for the Directorof Operations at theContinental Air Defense(CONAD).Colonel Harry Shoup
took the first Santa callon Christmas Eve of1955 from a six-year old
boy who began recitinghis Christmas list. Shoupdidn't find the call funny,
but after asking themother of the secondcaller what was happen-ing, then realizing themistake that occurred, he
instructed his staff togive Santa's position toany child who called in.Three years later, the
governments of the
United States andCanada combined theirnational domestic air
defenses into the NorthAmerican AerospaceDefense Command(NORAD), but the tradi-tion continued. Now major mediaoutlets as well aschildren call in to inquireon Santa's location.
NORAD relies on volun-teers to help make Santa
tracking possible. Manyemployees at CheyenneMountain and Peterson
Air Force Base spend part of their ChristmasEve with their familiesand friends at NORAD'sSanta Tracking Opera-tions Center in order toanswer phones and
provide Santa updates tothousands of callers.About 800 service
members and their fami-
lies volunteer, and shiftrun from 2am, December24 to 2am Christmasmorning. You can track Santa on
Christmas Eve bylogging onto the
NORAD website at:www.noradsanta.org.While your there, visit
The North Pole Village, where you can visit theshops and play gameswith the elves!

Commit A Minute To Safety This Holiday Season
Safety Tips From UL And The Muppets( N A P S I ) T h e
holidays are consideredthe most wonderfultime of the year, but allthe seasonal cooking, decorating and homeentertaining contributesto many unintentional
injuries each year.To help, UL
(Underwriters Laborato-ries), a global safetyorganization, and TheMuppets have a series ofonline safety videos toteach families how tostay safer this holidayseasonand for a
lifetime of safety aware-ness.The first video, featur-
ing popular charactersfrom The Muppets, educates families on firesafety and can be seen atSafetyAtHome.com.
The Commit a Minuteto Safety campaign alsoincludes a cookingsafety video with theSwedish Chef and anational public serviceannouncement featuringKermit the Frog, Dr.Bunsen Honeydew andhis assistant Beaker.
To help get families inthe holiday spirit safely, here are some additionaltips from ULand TheMuppets: Water your tree daily:
Dry trees pose asubstantial fire risk.
After bringing your treehome, make a fresh cutat the base of the trunk
before putting it in asturdy stand. Be sure towater it daily. Addition-ally, know your treesexpiration date. Afterabout four weeks, thetree will stop absorbingwater, dry out andshould be properlydiscarded or recycled. Check your lights,
check them twice:Inspect all your electriclights and decorations
for damage or wear.Cracked sockets, frayedor bare wires and looseconnections may pose afire or shock hazard. Decorate with a safe
eye: Cords should not berun under carpets or
tacked up with metalnails or staples.Small decorations can
be choking hazards forsmall children or petsand should be kept outof reach. Be flame aware:

Christmas cards areusually exchangedduring the weeks
preceding ChristmasDay on December 25 bymany people (includingnon-Christians) in West-ern society and in Asia. The traditional greet-
ing reads "wishing you aMerry Christmas and aHappy New Year,"much like the first com-mercial Christmas card,
produced by Sir HenryCole in London 1843.There are innumerable
variations on this greet-ing, many cardsexpressing morereligious sentiment, orcontaining a poem,
prayer or Biblical verse;others stay away fromreligion with an all-inclusive "Season'sgreetings".A Christmas card is
generally commerciallydesigned and purchasedfor the occasion. The content of the
design might relatedirectly to the Christmasnarrative with depic-tions of the Nativity ofJesus, or have Christiansymbols such as the Starof Bethlehem or a whitedove representing both
the Holy Spirit andPeace. Many Christmas cards
are secular and showChristmas traditionssuch as Santa Claus, objects associated withChristmas such ascandles, holly and
baubles, and Christmas-time activities such asshopping and partying,or other aspects of theseason such as the snowand wildlife of thenorthern winter. Some secular cards
depict nostalgic scenes
of the past such as crino-lined shoppers in 19thcentury streetscapes;others are humorous,
particularly in depictingthe antics of Santa and
his retinue.A number of nations
have issued commemo-rative stamps at Christ-mastime. Postal custom-ers will often use thesestamps to mail Christ-mas cards, and they are
popular with philatelists. These stamps are regular postage stamps, unlikeChristmas seals, and arevalid for postage year-round.They usually go on sale
some time between earlyOctober and earlyDecember, and are
printed in considerable
quantities.In 1898 a Canadian
stamp was issued tomark the inaugurationof the Imperial PennyPostage rate. The stampfeatures a map of theglobe and bears an
inscription "XMAS1898" at the bottom. In1937, Austria issuedtwo "Christmas greetingstamps" featuring a roseand the signs of thezodiac. Both the USPostal Service and theRoyal Mail regularlyissue christmas-themedstamps each year.
