PREAMBLE National Institute of Technology (NIT), Durgapur was established as Regional Engineering College (REC) in 1960 as a joint venture of the Government of India and Government of West Bengal. REC Durgapur was converted to NIT Durgapur under the full administrative and financial control of the Government of India with a “Deemed to be University” status on 3rd July, 2003. The Institute was declared an “Institute of National Importance” by the Government of India vide NIT Act 2007 (29 of 2007) implemented on August 15, 2007. The Institute offers nine four-year B. Tech. programmes in the disciplines of Biotechnology, Chemical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Computer Science and Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Electronics and Communication Engineering, Information Technology, Mechanical Engineering, Metallurgical and Materials Engineering with a total sanctioned annual intake of 800 Indian students. In addition, students are admitted from different countries of the world as nominated by the Government of India. NIT Durgapur also offers twenty one M. Tech. programmes in Biotechnology (Department of Biotechnology), Chemical Engineering (Department of Chemical Engineering), Corrosion Science & Technology (Department of Chemistry), Structural Engineering (Department of Civil Engineering), Geotechnical Engineering (Department of Civil Engineering), High Performance Computing (Computer Centre), Computer Science & Engineering (Department of Computer Science & Engineering), Power Systems (Department of Electrical engineering), Power Electronics & Machine Drives (Department of Electrical Engineering), Telecommunication Engineering (Department of Electronics & Communication Engineering), Microelectronics & VLSI (Department of Electronics & Communication Engineering), Information Technology (Department of Information Technology), Operations Research (Department of Mathematics), Machine Design (Department of Mechanical Engineering), Thermal Engineering (Department of Mechanical Engineering), Fluid Mechanics & Heat Transfer (Department of Mechanical Engineering), Metallurgy & Materials Technology (Department of Metallurgical & Materials Engineering), Advanced Materials Science & Technology (Department of Physics), Environmental Science and Technology (co-coordinating department: Earth & Environmental Studies), Software Engineering (Computer Applications) and Entrepreneurship & Innovations (Information Technology, Humanities & Social Sciences and Management Studies). It also offers Master of Business Administration (MBA) (Department of Management Studies), Master of Computer Applications (MCA) (Department of Computer Applications) and M. Sc. programmes in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics. Since its transformation from REC to NIT, there has been a major shift of focus to research and post-graduate education which is corroborated by the steep rise in the research output indicators and sponsored projects (vide figures). Major expansion in research infrastructure was taken up through World Bank funded programme TEQIP, plan grant and sponsored projects. The Institute started a collaborative programme with CERN, Geneva including collaborative research, faculty exchange and students’ internship. NIT Durgapur also signed MOU with Caledonian College of Engineering, Muscat, Oman, affiliated to Glasgow Caledonian University and started a collaborative research and faculty exchange programme. Collaborative research is also in progress with more than 25 universities/institutes all over the world. The students are financially supported to present papers in conferences in India and abroad and to undertake research internship in different countries of the world.
