EAT WALNUTS TO WARD OFF DIABETES RISK NEW YORK, (IANS) Consuming walnuts - rich in antioxidants - may nearly halve the risk of developing Type-2 diabetes compared to those who do not eat nuts, finds a study representing more than 34,000 adults. The findings showed doubling walnut consumption (or eating 3 tablespoons) was associated with a 47 per cent lower prevalence of Type-2 diabetes. "The strong connection between walnut consumers and lower prevalence of Type-2 diabetes is additional justification for including walnuts in the diet. Other re- search has shown that walnuts may also be beneficial for cogni- tive function and heart health," said Lenore Arab from the Univer- sity of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). For the study, the team looked at 34,121 adults aged 18-85 years who were asked about their dietary intake as well as if they had been diagnosed with diabetes or if they were taking medications for diabetes. MISSISSAUGA - RBC's main affordability measure for Canada in the first quarter reversed the slight improvement it saw late last year. Higher interest rates were the main culprit. A third straight rise in mortgage rates boosted ownership costs, which outpaced household income gains. Affordability is a major issue in two of Canada's larg- est markets. It is at crisis levels in Vancouver and poses a tremen- dous challenge for many Toronto area buyers despite improving in the past two quarters. Modest deterioration was seen in most markets.Still, outside Vancouver, Victoria and Toronto, the weight of ownership costs generally remains in line with historical norms and it is unlikely to get any easier. The prospect of more interest rate hikes in the period ahead poses material risk of further affordability erosion in Canada. The odds of this ultimately occurring will also depend on the degree to which household income increases. INTEREST RATES NOW WORKING AGAINST AFFORDABILITY Well, the winning streak for housing affordability in Canada ended... at just one quarter! RBC's aggregate affordability measure for Canada rose by 0.4 percentage points to 48.4% in the first quarter of 2018 (an increase represents a loss of affordability). This rise entirely reversed the slight 0.3 percentage point decline recorded in the previous quarter the first decline in 10 quarters. Higher mortgage rates were the main factor returning RBC's measure to a multi-decade high. It wasn't the first time mortgage rates increased they also did so in the previous two quarters. However, a drop in home prices (centered in the Greater Toronto Area) won the day in the fourth quarter which trimmed ownership costs modestly over that period. This wasn't repeated in the first quarter as aggregate prices remained flat relative to the fourth quarter and therefore provided no offset to rising mortgage rates. Only a modest gain in household income helped out a little. The three successive quarterly increases in mortgage rates marked a significant turning point after they trended downward and contributed positively to affordability during the past decade. OPT FOR BOLD COLOURSTHIS MONSOONNEW DELHI, (IANS) With monsoon round the corner, boldcolours are here to stay. With pastels being a summertrend, the youth is trying different tones in rainy season.Bold ones being a favourite. Ashima Sharma, a fashiondesigner and founder of Ashima S Couture and Siddhar th Bindra,Managing Director of Rangriti shared some tips on colours whichcan be trendy in this monsoon.* Maroon shade in outfits: Maroon has been a favourite sincetime immemorial in all styles but this year maroon can be seenspor ted in not just the conventional maxi dresses but also injumpsuits, off shoulders, ruffles, cold shoulders and shor t dressesas well. As today's youth loves to experiment with fashion somaroon can also be seen spor ted in daily causal college wear.* Green shade: Green is the colour of freshness and cool and perfectfor monsoon. This colour always looks good on most complexions. Ifyou are warm toned focus on mustard, khaki and dark green. If youare cool toned try bright green colour like parrot green. Try to combinegreen with bright colours like yellow and white. Add some solidcolours to your outfit and watch the transformation.* Peach shades: Peach is the colour which goes with all darkand lighter tones and a very cool choice for monsoon as it's oneclassic shade that goes well with almost all styles so it's here tostay this monsoon and for seasons to come. Extend the themeof the outfit through to your accessories and don't forget toadd wide brim hat in this season.* Cool magentas: The colour donned in an off shoulderoutfit is the best buy this season. The best point aboutmagenta is that it's one shade that looks extremely stun-ning in pictures and also it's warm bold tone highlights allthe types of complexions very well.

EDUCATION CAN BOOST MEN'S CHANCES OF ONLINE DATINGSYDNEY, (IANS) Hard to find a par tner online? Rev up your education levels, as women are more likely to prefer educated par tners while datingonline, a study of online dating behaviour of over 40,000 people has found. The findings showed that women in the reproductive age or under 40 aremore picky about the education level of men they prefer and seek the same level or higher in a potential mate.Conversely, men in the middle-aged (above 40) tend to become more picky about their partner's education level. "It's an amazing way to look athuman mating behaviour (internet dating websites like RSVP) because it gives us a really vivid snapshot of such a large and diverse age group (18-80 years) of people in a pretty uniform mate choice setting," said behavioural economists Stephen Whyte, from the Queensland University ofTechnology. While the education level of a potential mate mattered more for both men and women in the years of peak fertility (18-30 years), womenhad a clearly higher minimum standard for the education level they wanted in their mate across all age. "Evolution favours women who are highlyselective about their mates and in many cultures women have been shown to use education as an indicator of quality because it is often associatedwith social status and intelligence - both attributes that are highly sought after," Whyte added. The study, published in the journal Psychological Science, stems from the largest ever behavioural economic analysis of Australian online datingbehaviour, reviewing 219,013 participant contacts by 41,936 members of online dating website RSVP during a four -month period in 2016.

Mild sleep problems may up blood pressure in womenNEW YORK, (IANS) Women, please take note. Even if you are having mild sleep problems, such as having trouble falling asleep, it can raise yourblood pressure, a new study suggests. The study found that women who had mild sleep problems - including those who slept for seven to nine hours a night, asmeasured by a wristwatch-like device - were significantly more likely to have elevated blood pressure. The researchers alsofound an association between endothelial inflammation and mild sleep disturbances. "Our findings suggest that mild sleepproblems could possibly initiate the vascular endothelial inflammation that's a significant contributor to cardiovasculardisease," said lead author Brooke Aggarwal from the Columbia University Irving Medical Center. According to the research-ers, nearly one-third of adults don't get enough sleep and for women, the problem may be even bigger. "That's concerning,

since studies have shown that sleepdeprivation and milder sleep problemsmay have a disproportionate effect oncardiovascular health in women,"Aggarwal added. For the study, pub-lished in the Journal of the AmericanHeart Associa tion, the researchersexamined blood pressure and sleephabits in 323 healthy women. Mildsleep disturbances - poor-qualitysleep, taking longer to fall asleep, and insomnia - were nearly three timesmore common than severe sleep dis-turbances, such as obstructive sleepapnea. Some of the women allowedthe researchers to extract a few endot-helial cells from inside an arm vein tolook for a pro-inflammatory proteinthat is implicated in the develop-ment of cardiovascular disease.

OPT FOR RIGHT FOODDURING MONSOONNEW DELHI, (IANS) People usually fall sick during monsoonas the moisture in the air triggers growth and proliferation ofmany harmful micro-organisms. You must be very cautiousabout your food during rainy season as the wrong food willgive rise to a variety of infections and diseases. ReemaNarang, Dietician at Doctor Insta and Mehar Rajput, Dieti-cian, Fitpass advise people to include the following foods intheir daily diet.* Soups: Instead of eating chaat and pakodas try having soupsduring your snack time. Soups are full of nutrition and givesatiety. As well as it is easy to digest and is light on yourdigestive system. It is recommended to drink soups withginger, garlic, and black pepper. These spices not only in-crease its taste but also help in improving your immunity. Italso acts as a hydrant for your body during the humid weatheras humidity speeds up the dehydration in your body and leavesyou with fatigue and nausea.* Steamed vegetables: Steaming softens vegetables whilemaintaining most of their nutrients, especially water-solublecompounds that are easily damaged by heat like Vitamin C.Steaming vegetables not only removes germs from them butalso helps them retain more texture and flavor. GURU TEGH BAHADUR INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL ENDOWSCO-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES WITH HIGH IMPORTANCE

BRAMPTON - Guru Tegh Bahadur International School is an elite aca-demic institution located in Brampton, Ontario. It professes a convic-tion that when traditional pedagogical methods are fused with mod-ern ones, the results are optimal. Indeed, Guru Tegh Bahadur Schoolhas received a per fect 10/10 ranking by the F raser Institute in its2018 annual ranking of public and private schools across Ontario. The Principal of G.T.B., SanjivDhawan, insists that what's responsiblefor his school's commendable success is its multi-faceted approachto education. In this approach, co-curricular activities are given highimpor tance alongside the school's academic cur riculum.Co-curricular activities have been long proven, by extensive scien-tific research, to facilitate the development of diverse domains of thehuman mind such as intellectual development, social development, ethical development, and emotional development. They ultimatelyfoster creativity, enthusiasm, and confidence in young people. Ineffect, Principal Dhawan has made it a mission that his school - aswell as the new school having been just opened, Frederick BantingInternational School - supplement the curricular or main academicactivities. The students of Guru Tegh Bahadur International thus enjoya wide horizon of co-curricular activities to cater to their cultural, social, and aesthetic development. The co-curricular events available to GTB students are many andthey include outdoor as well as indoor activities throughout the aca-demic year as well as summer months. Among them are ar ts andcrafts, musical activities, folk dances and songs, school decorations, public per formances before community officials, and par ticipation isvarious cultural festivals. These diverse co-curricular activitiesamount to practical experiences received by students, designed tohelp them become confident and capable leaders in life. To clarify, thetheoretical knowledge students receive in the classroom gets strength-ened and re-affirmed when they engage in a co-curricular activityrelated to the academic content they are taught. The student character thus develops holistically, as the intellectualactivities of the classroom are complemented by the social, moral, and aesthetic activities pursued outside the classroom. The stu-dents' extensive engagement in co-curricular activities, when takenalongside their daily academics, helps to produce clarity in language, speech fluency, extempore expressions, sociability, confidence, anda spirit of healthy competition. Dhawan insists that the various co-curricular activities his administration devises for its students helpthem learn how to cooperate and coordinate in different situations, how to effectively self-assess, and how to develop an appreciationfor others' opinions and sensibilities."The bottom line," Dhawan says, "is that co-curricular activities pro-vide motivation for learning and develop a sense of belonging in mystudents." Each year in the summer months Guru Tegh Bahadur'sstudents are actively engaged in the celebration of India's Indepen-dence Day. After extensive preparation and rehearsals, a large groupof students sings both patriotic and religious songs in the Indian Con-sulate of Canada, located in Toronto. The event is attended by thou-sands of community members and government officials who warmlycommend GTB's students on the excellence of their per formance. The Consul General of India, Dinesh Bhatia, personally presentedawards to the students in 2017. The preparations for the 2018 Inde-pendence Day Celebration are already on their way, and studentshave begun organizing and coordinating their performances. Simi-larly, the students of Guru Tegh Bahadur recently had an outstandingper formance at the TeeyanDaMela festival on Mother's Day. Orga-nized by the Powerade Center in Brampton, the event celebrated hap-piness, prosperity, and well-being and Guru Tegh Bahadur's studentscontributed to its success by enter taining the guests with elaboratedances.Co-curricular activities mean more to Dhawan than the engagementin cultural celebrations. Being active par ticipants in widely Canadiancommunal events is also of paramount impor tance to the this deter-mined educator. In effect, the students of Guru Tegh Bahadur Interna-tional took par t in the Family Weekend Fest event help in Brampton onFebruary 17, 2018. There students, along with their families, not onlyenjoyed a fun-filled day of social activities, but also prepared a num-ber out outstanding per formances for community members. The stu-dents per formed hip hop dances, Bollywood dances, and the tradi-tional Punjabi Bhangra dance for all the attendees. The co-curricularevents GTB students participate in are not always of celebratory na-ture, as Dhawan insists that his students gain exposure to some of theproblems faced by their society. In effect, GTB has raised awareness among its student body by at-tending a non-profit event organized by the Seniors Social ServicesGroup. The purpose of the event is to stop the abuse of senior citi-zens, and students can listen to live speeches and compelling storiesby community leaders about seniors abuse. Principal Dhawan him-self is a guest speaker at the event and this enables his students to be

inspired by the work he does outside of school in addition to his dailyacademic and administrative activities. The par ticipation of Guru Tegh Bahadur's students in community eventsexceeds the scope of song and dance, as students strive to alsoprovide the community with memorable dramatic per formances. In2017, GTB organized, choreographed, per fected, and presented a 45-minute-long play on the life andwork of Indian revolutionary heroShaheed Bhagat Singh. The dra-mat ic per fo rmance was ver yelaborate and it involved over 70students whose collective workrepresented a moving depictionof Singh's life. The event was a notable suc-cess, as the wider communityapplauded the students of GuruTegh Bahadur International Schoolfor both their historical aware-ness and their aesthetic excel-lence. The last co-curricularevent experienced by GTB's stu-dents that is par ticularly notewor-thy is the Festival of Lights DiwaliCelebrat ion organized by theYMCA of Brampton. At this func-tion, celebrating the triumph oflight over darkness, the studentsand teachers of Guru TeghBahadur International put for th anumber of outstanding live per-formances of diverse Indiandances including the Garba, andBollywood dance. As has been evidenced by theextensive list of co-curricular ac-tivities, the student body of Guru

Tegh Bahadur is actively engaged in cultural, communal, social, and aesthetic activities, both physical and creative. This activeengagement is the product of Principal Dhawan's vision for theholistic development of his students: "Co-curricular activit iesinculcate a feeling of harmony, a love of community work, a ca-pability of adjustment, and ultimately a sense of belonging."

NEW YORK, (IANS) If your kid is slow in language skills, then send-ing him or her for piano lessons can improve word discrimination aswell as language proficiency, says a study. The findings suggestedthat piano lessons may have specific effect on the children's ability todistinguish different pitches, which helped them to better distinguishdifferent words. However it did not appear to confer any benefit for overall cognitive ability, asmeasured by IQ, attention span, and working memory, the researchers said."The children didn't differ in the more broad cognitive measures, butthey did show some improvements in word discrimination, par-ticularly for consonants. The piano group showed the best im-provement there," said Rober t Desimone from The Massachu-setts Institute of Technology (MIT).

The study, published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy ofSciences, included data from nearly 100 children aged four or five years, whowere divided into three groups - one that received 45-minute piano lessonsthree times a week; one that received extra reading instruction for the sameperiod of time; and one that received neither intervention. After six months, the researchers tested the children on their ability to discriminate wordsbased on differences in vowels, consonants, or tone. The results showed that, children who had piano lessons showed a signifi-cant advantage over children in the extra reading group in discrimi-nating between words that differ by one consonant. Children in boththe piano group and extra reading group per formed better than chil-dren who received neither intervention when it came to discriminat-ing words based on vowel differences.

This pill could end daily insulin jabs for diabeticsPRIYANKA AND NICK JONAS ATTENDED PRE-ENGAGEMENT PARTY OF AKASH AND HIS FIANCEE SHLOKA MEHTA IN MUMBAI.

NEW YORK, (IANS) Re-searchers, including one ofIndian-origin, have devel-oped a 'holy grail' of insulinin a pill that could helpdiabetics keep their bloodsugar levels in check. For upto 40 million people withType-1 diabetes worldwide, apainful needle prick once ortwice daily is necessary fordelivering the insulin thattheir bodies cannot produceon their own, and failing toadhere to the regimen (due topain, phobia of needles) canlead to poor glycemic controlcausing serious healthcomplications. The new approach carriesinsulin in an ionic liquidcomprised of choline andgeranic acid that is then putinside a capsule with anacid-resistant entericcoating. "Once ingested, insulin must navigate a

challenging obstacle coursebefore it can be effectivelyabsorbed into the blood-stream," said SamirMitragotri, Professor at theHarvard University. "Ourapproach is like a Swiss Armyknife, where one pill has toolsfor addressing each of theobstacles that are encoun-tered," he added. The enteric coating isbiocompatible, easy tomanufacture, and can bestored for up to two months atroom temperature withoutdegrading. This polymercoating resists the breakdownby gastric acids in the gut aswell as dissolves when itreaches a more alkalineenvironment in the smallintestine, where the ionicliquid carrying insulin isreleased. The choline-geranic acidformulation also was shown to

be adept at penetrating two final barriers - the layer of mucus liningthe intestine and thetight cell junctions of theintestine wall, throughwhich large-moleculedrugs such as insulincannot easily pass. The findings, publishedin the Proceedings ofthe National Academy ofSciences, also showedthat the oral delivery ofinsulin could alsomitigate many of thedisease's life-threaten-ing side effects thatresult from patientsfailing to give them-selves requiredinjections. "It has beenthe holy grail of drugdelivery to developways to give protein andpeptide drugs likeinsulin by mouth, instead of injection," theresearchers said.

Preschool teachers at higherrisk of hearing problems: StudyLONDON, (IANS) Seven out of 10 female preschool teacherssuffer from hearing problems, finds a study that linked the professionwith a higher risk than others' exposed to noise. It is because thepreschool teachers are regularly exposed to voices and screams thatoften convey important information and is difficult to avoid, unlike inan industrial environment, as they have to listen to the children."Preschool teachers have a much higher risk than those who work inenvironments with a similar noise rating. The symptoms can betriggered by the boisterous environment, and it's also difficult to usehearing protection," Sofie Fredriksson from Sahlgrenska Academy atthe University of Gothenburg, Sweden said in a statement. "We havean occupational group with much higher risk for these symptoms, and if nothing is done about it, it's really alarming. We have to lowersound levels, have a calmer preschool," Fredriksson explained. Thefindings suggested that hearing loss and tinnitus - sensation ofhearing sounds in ears - were the second most common symptomsaffecting preschool teachers. Among the group of 4,718 womenwho par ticipated in the study, while 71 per cent experiencedsound-induced auditory fatigue making them unable to listen tothe radio, 46 per cent had trouble understanding speech. Similarly,39 per cent said that they experienced discomfor t or physical painin their ears from everyday sounds that are not necessarily loudat all, at least once a week. "Hearing protection devices arenormally the main intervention if the sound level cannot be reduced inanother way, and it may be necessary if you have a child who subjectsyour ears to crying for a whole day during their introductory period atpreschool," Fredriksson suggested.

Why flight attendants are at high risk of cancer?PARINEETI CHOPRA DURING A MEET AND GREET PROGRAMME IN GURUGRAM.

NEW YORK, (IANS) Due to regular exposure to carcinogens, dis-rupted sleep cycles and possible chemical contaminants, flight at-tendants may be at a higher risk of developing several forms of can-cer than others, finds a new research. These include breast, uterine, gastrointestinal, thyroid and cervical cancer.According to the study, flight attendants are also regularly exposed tothe largest effective annual ionizing radiation dose relative to all otherradiation workers because of both their exposure to and lack of pro-tection from cosmic radiation in the plane. "Our findings of higherrates of several cancers among flight attendants is striking given thelow rates of overweight and smoking in our study population, whichhighlights the question of what can be done to minimize the adverse

exposures and cancers common among cabin crew," said IrinaMordukhovich from the Harvard University's T.H. Chan School of Pub-lic Health. The study, published in the journal Environmental Health, included data from a survey of 5,366 US flight attendants, who werethen then compared the prevalence of cancers among the generalpublic. The results showed that flight attendants had a higher preva-lence of every cancer that was examined, especially breast cancer, melanoma and non-melanoma skin cancer among females. The findings suggest that additional effor ts should be made to mini-mize the risk of cancer among flight attendants, including monitoringradiation dose and organising schedules to minimize radiation expo-sure and circadian rhythm disruption, the researchers suggested.

Over-preparing mostcommon mistakes in bartending:International mixologistBY NIVEDITANEW DELHI, (IANS) Luca Cinalli, an Internationally ac-claimed mixologist from Britain, says that the only wayto adopt resourceful bar tending in India is through edu-cation and practice as the preparation techniques canmake a huge di f ference between wastage andsustainability. He also says that the most common mis-take mixologists make is that they hardly analyze "tongueand taste" and over prepare everything."I feel the most common mistake mixologists make isthat they dont analyze tongue and taste. There are 5senses and while creating, all those should be keptin mind. At Novelé, we have kept in mind the re-gional preferences of the audience as well as thevisual aesthetics along with taste for cocktails. It isvery impor tant to be aware and sensitive to all the 5senses of your customer."Another mistake I feel mixologists make is over-pre-paring. They spend too much time preparing a cocktailunnecessarily. Effectiveness and efficiency is impor-tant," Cinalli, told IANS in an e-mail interview. Born inLanciano, a small town east of Italy, Cinalli is a celeb-rity mixologist and the person behind designing and cre-ating each cocktail at Novelé, an invigorating cocktailbar nestled amongst the heart of New Delhi giving atheatrical dining experience to the visitors. At a young age of 12, he enrolled himself at The CateringSchool in Villa Santa Maria Village. While studying herehe attended various courses like bakery, latte ar t, icesculpture, brewery and many more which made him anexperienced and hands on person in the F&B industry.Cinalli presently is one of the leading mixologists of theworld and consulting people and venues all around theworld, like Bali, Singapore, Moscow, Greece, Brazil,Switzerland, Austria, Mexico and more.Talking about how India can adopt to resourcefulbar tending, he says that it all lies in education and prac-tice. "The preparation techniques that mixologists orbar tenders use is what makes the difference of wast-age and sustainability. Mixologists themselves need tobe more aware of the possible alternatives and optionsto prepare a certain ingredient or concoction. Eliminat-ing wastage does sound something unachievable butwith the right amount of research, creativity and prac-tice into it, it can be eliminated."For me, the key to same is education, research andnever ending innovation and practice," he said. For him, an aspiring bar tender can learn from manythings."You have to take inspiration from everything.
