PREVIOUS LESSON

• While in Borneo, the Japanese introduced system of administration called Miri Shyu.

• The system brought together Brunei, Labuan, Baram, Limbang, Bintulu and Lawas as one territory.

• Before the Japanese occupation, Brunei was under the British Resident and followed the British administration.

• To remove western influence, the Japanese made an extensive effort to make people adopt the Japanese culture, language and ideology. This process called Nipponisation.

• Those who opposed Nipponisation were thrown in jail and caned.

• Japanese forced the people of Brunei to adopt Japanese culture, language and ideology.

• Used Japanese Flag – Nippon Hi No Maru

• Japanese social and cultural lifestyle.

• Intensive programme of Japanese language teaching. They made a compulsory ruling for all schools and government officers to learn the Japanese language.

– Within three years of the Japanese administration many local people were able to understand and speak Japanese.

WHY?

To strengthen their influence and encouraged the setting up of youth organisations and development of cultural activities to win the hearts and minds of the local people.
