A Florida detective was shot and killed while investigating a residence believed to house a
meth lab. An Arizona deputy sheriff lost his life responding to a burglary alarm at a
business. A Washington state park ranger was shot and killed after she attempted to
conduct a traffic stop.
These three law enforcement officers were among the 48 officers around the nation
who died in 2012 as a result of felonious incidents in the line of duty, according to the
FBI’s latest Law Enforcement Officers Killed and Assaulted (LEOKA) report. All 48
officers would have undoubtedly considered their actions a part of the job. But the duties
performed by these brave men and women—and others just like them—are far from

IG: DHS CYBERSECURITY TOOLS, TRAINING NOT UP TO PAR
The Department of Homeland Security has struggled to respond to
cybersecurity threats and disseminate information about them because of
lingering technical, funding and staffing woes, according to the agency’s
inspector general.
As hackers increasingly take aim at U.S. banks and other top targets, DHS still lacks
some tools to track the attacks, desperately needs additional analysts to interpret and
share its information in real time and lags in its efforts to train its existing cybersecurity
workforce, the watchdog found in a report released Monday. (Read More)

THE DARK NET: THE NEW FACE OF BLACK MARKETS AND
ORGANIZED CRIME It was a late summer evening and I was meeting an anonymous man in an empty parking lot in order to buy a fraction of something called a bitcoin. The reason: because it's the primary currency of online black markets.
The most infamous black market is a website called the Silk Road where about any illicit drug can be purchased anonymously but it's only the tip of the iceberg. Silk Road is the reason I was purchasing the bitcoin but I wasn't after drugs or contraband; rather, I was buying information. I wanted to map the online underworld and was therefore buying lists of links to other black market sites. (Read More)
CHINA IS SPYING ON YOU THROUGH YOUR KETTLE:
BUGS THAT SCAN WI-FI DEVICES FOUND IN
IMPORTED KITCHEN GADGETS
Russian investigators claim to have found household appliances imported from China
which contain hidden microchips that pump spam data and malware into Wi-Fi
networks.
Authorities in St Petersburg allegedly discovered 20 to 30 kettles and irons with 'spy
microchips that send some data to the foreign server', according to Russian media.
The revelation comes just as the EU launches an investigation into claims that Russia
itself bugged gifts to delegates at last month's G20 summit in an attempt to retrieve
