Pastor’s Letter August 12/13 Dear Parish Family, This weekend we find ourselves well into August and many are already thinking about summer’s end. Shopping ads for school supplies are everywhere and some of the older kids are already back to college! But I have great news! The best of summer is still to come. In just a couple of weeks we will be holding our new Vacation Bible Camp – A Celebrating Creation. It will be a wonderful week of sports, music, art, faith, and fun. Whether you send your child to enjoy being a camper or participate as a volunteer, I appreciate all you do to make this event a success. This coming week we take a break to celebrate the Feast of the Assumption. Please join us for this beautiful feast in honor of Mary. Our Monday night concerts resume again on August 21 as we welcome Elena Baksht in a beautiful evening of classical piano music. Elena is no stranger to SHJM. She is the director of Southampton Young Artists and it will be a special treat to have a concert just with her. We are also looking forward to a visit from Bishop John Barres, a visit especially directed to our young adults. He will be here for a BBQ and evening of prayer on August 22. If you are one of our college students or young adults, please come meet Bishop John in this evening just for you! Of course the highlight of summer is always our tent party, celebrated this year on Saturday, August 26. This year our tent party is honoring Pat and Ed Corrigan and Joan Heinz who were instrumental in founding our tent party so many years ago and bringing it to life again in 2013. They are each tireless workers and supporters of SHJM so please come to enjoy this evening and to honor them! You can purchase your tickets at the office and even online! And of course – summer celebrations are continuing into the fall. We welcome our own Ashley Bell in concert on Saturday, September 2 and we are very much looking forward to a return visit of the High Kings – coming to us as living proof that good Irish music is not just for St. Patrick’s Day. Please remember that all these events are only possible because of the generosity of our sponsors. If you would like to be a tent party sponsor or music sponsor it is not too late! See the information here in our bulletin. So keep enjoying this wonderful summer! The best is yet to be! Sincerely yours in Christ,

Rev. Michael A. Vetrano, Pastor

Religious Education:

Passing On the Faith . . .Catechists Needed We are starting to plan for our September 2017 religious education program.

If you have experience teaching, have an interest in teaching, or just enjoy working with young people, consider being part of the Sacred Hearts religious

education team as a catechist this coming fall. In order to pass on the Faith, we need teachers, including teachers who will co-teach a class with another teacher; substitute teachers; classroom assistants; and people who will assist teachers with special events, such as the Christmas pageant and Living Stations during Lent. Lots of ways to participate!

All you need is: An open heart and a willingness to share your faith We will provide: • Expert guidance • A supportive community to

share ideas and best practices • Great materials • Special support for first-time

catechists

What you’ll receive: • the satisfaction of passing on our Catholic Faith to the next generation, as others have passed the Faith on to us

If you are interested in serving in this important ministry, contact Sister Cathy Stare at [email protected] or Liz Parker at [email protected].

Reflections On the Gospel

August 13, 2017

Sunday’s readings are a lesson in contrasts. In the first reading, Elijah finds God in a “tiny whispering sound.” In the Gospel, Jesus arrives amidst strong winds and high waves. On one hand, the message may be that God is not where we might expect—in dramatic and powerful situations, but on the other hand, the message suggests that God is, in fact, in the turbulence and turmoil. Perhaps the more accurate instruction is that God is in both. Like the “tiny whispering sound,” God is in the small, unobtrusive, humble, and often overlooked people and places we encounter every day. But God is also there with us and for us when things go bad, when we are frightened and feel doomed. The key is to have faith, not in ourselves, our skills, or our experience, but in God, always and completely.

Feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary—
