Competition was just winding down, but for the Women of Note Chorus, their schedule continued to be full of activity. May was a busy and memorable month, from pouring beer to cel-ebrating a milestone anniver-sary, while singing at every turn.

TRAIN, THE SMASHING PUMPKINS, PHILLIP PHILLIPS, BOZ SCAGGS and 46 other en-tertainers kept Women of Note members & volunteers rockin’ and rollin’ as they poured beer for thirsty fans during SunFest, May 1-5 in downtown West Palm Beach. Torrents of rain did not dampen the spirits of vol-unteers and patrons as musi-cians rocked the waterfront ven-ue on Wednesday and Thurs-day. Friday and Saturday’s bril-liant sunshine brought out throngs of music enthusiasts and Women of Note reaped the benefits as tips and a percent-age of beer sales make up one of Women of Note’s largest fundraisers for the year.

Before joining the other volun-teers at SunFest on Sunday, an ensemble from Women of Note delighted an appreciative group

of women at a Wellington perfor-mance.

A thank-you picnic for SunFest volunteers was held on Satur-day, May 18. Members ate homemade picnic fare, including Dixie’s famous fudge, while kids flew kites, and adults coddled babies, schmoozed and sang chorus favorites.

Closing out a year of celebrat-ing, the Women of Note com-memorated its 15-year anniver-sary by inviting former and cur-rent members to a rehearsal on Monday, May 20th. Awards,

recognition, reminiscing and re-flection delighted all attendees.

The Women of Note’s very own chapter quartet, Sunsation, sang for the Honor Flight Veterans prior to their departure to Wash-ington, DC on May 25. As the World War II Vets boarded their flights to visit and reflect at the Washington memorials, Sun-sation serenaded them with songs from the era of Big Band and Swing Music. The Vets be-came nostalgic when they heard “As Time Goes By,” “I’ll Be See-ing You,” and “Boogie Woogie

We’ve been meaning to tell you, Region 9: Thanks so much for your warm support at April’s Re-gional Contest in Daytona Beach! As a result of your enthusiastic encouragement, we won the Re-gion 9 First Place Mid-Size Cho-rus medal, and the Region 9 Se-cond Place Overall Chorus med-al. We couldn’t have done it with-out you.

Jacksonville Harmony congratu-lates Spirit of the Gulf chorus and Quattro quartet for their impres-sive titles, and to all choruses and quartets who left Daytona with victories in their respective divi-sions.

One such chorus is our northern neighbors, Hilton Head Shore Notes. Five South Carolina wom-en willingly brave interstate insan-ity most Tuesday nights to share our musical lives. They participate in local performances with us, went to Jekyll Island retreat with us, and will compete onstage with us in Honolulu. They are: Sherry Adams, Sue Gordon, Kathy Jack-son, Maureen Mack and Jackson-ville Harmony Team Leader) Fran Russ. Add to these ladies dual member Sarah Bican who lives in and sings with Jax Harmony but who also competed with Hilton Head.

At April’s Regional Contest, Shore Notes was Contestant #12 and as luck would have it, we followed right after at #13. You’re penal-ized if you’re late getting on stage, so these women not only had to get off stage from their first performance REAL fast, but they then had to slam into their Jax Harmony baseball uniforms----white hose, red/white socks, black dancing shoes, white tees, striped shirts, striped pants, ball glove or bat, and don't forget the caps! ---

Play Ball! By Julie Reeve

Jacksonville Harmony

In plenty of time for Jacksonville Harmony to avoid the time penal-ty.

As Hilton Head came off the stage and Jacksonville Harmony was waiting just off stage, some-one shouted "make way!" and a mass of performance-ecstatic rhinestone-sparkled velvet-dressed Hilton Head singers jubi-lantly danced down the ramp into the tiny narrow room where 6 chairs and 6 Jax Harmony women were lined up and anxiously wait-ing. The Jax Harmony Dual mem-bers peeled off from the rest of the Hilton Head chorus (with good luck wishes whispered them by their gals) and the strip-down be-gan in earnest fury. The Jax wom-en helped the dual members take off the earrings, necklaces, dress-es, slips, shoes, etc., then don the other costume in deliberate and practiced poise. Only 8 feet away, it was already time for the first of the Jacksonville Harmony Chorus Baseball Team to mount the Stage---yikes!

Sue Gordon stated later that night that she was able to get that Hou-dini change routine down to 36 seconds. All six women success-fully gained the stage that day and no penalty was issued. Sue, we salute you and the Jax Har-mony/Hilton Head Krewe for your amazing can-do effort!

For their efforts, these dual mem-bers were rewarded with 3 med-als: Besides Jax Harmony’s above-mentioned two medals, Hilton Head Shore Notes won First Place in the Division AA (Small Chorus) category award! What a day!

Now with our Jacksonville Harmo-ny Hawaiian Home Run Tour only 3 months away, we’re fielding ex-tra practices. Thursday May 9, Fort Caroline Baptist Church host-ed our entirety in hot pink satin blouse/black tights and high heeled dancing shoes. Church

members were treated to a full repertoire of Broadway hits, patri-otic music, our Contest package, and entertainment by our talented JHS quartet Group Therapy (Tenor Gaynell Russell, Lead Su-san Brooks, Bari Anne Bell, Bass Mary Breedon).

The next night was a changeup in mood and purpose. We were invit-ed to sing the National Anthem at the “Remembering Ryan Freel” night at Davis Park in St. Johns County. Formerly with the Cincin-nati Reds, Ryan founded BLD (Big League Development) Base-ball so that young athletes could be coached by major league play-ers to build skills, teamwork, sportsmanship, and character. Freel’s efforts and groundwork are still seen at work today at the camp, and Jacksonville Harmony is honored to contribute to this remembrance.

You can find out more about Ryan Freel, all things baseball and many other wonderful things on our expertly maintained Jackson-ville Harmony Chorus Facebook page. Cynthia Riley Shelton stepped up to the plate and breathed pertinent and newswor-thy life into the site. Now we have a Facebook page that literally sings out to the world. For this we say Thank You, Cynthia!

As we do every summer after Contest, we install our new Man-agement Team. Along with a com-petent and experienced Music Staff, this chorus knows that it takes more than luck to operate and smoothly maintain our entity. Warm hugs and many thanks go to those who have served us so selflessly, and our unending grati-tude goes to those who have stepped up to march us forward.

Jacksonville Harmony sends best wishes for a sensational summer to you Region 9 and we look for-ward to seeing all of you in Ha-waii. Aloha!

Hi! Many of you might not know much about me so I thought I'd volunteer to be first. As one of the "older" queens, I figured I'd better do it while I can still remember things. So, here it goes.

I joined SAI way back when dinosaurs roamed the earth and the ice was still melting in 1959. Yeah, yeah, I know, some of you weren't even born then. My older brother was already a member of SPEBSQSA and I helped him learn his music. I wasn't really a big fan of those barbershop swipes back then. I guess I just didn't know what makes the hair stand up on your neck and arms. My first chorus director was a lovely lady by the name of Pearl Borg. If you look in the SAI archives you'll see she was one of our early Presidents, the editor of the Pitch Pipe and a wonderful quartet tenor. I left that chorus to help Mary LaMaster as she started directing, what was then, the Deerfield Melodeers (yep, one and the same chorus). I became their choreographer and lead section leader (I started out as a bari, but they needed more loud mouths in the lead section). When Mary left, we went through several directors (Karen Breidert being one of the best). I was lucky enough to step in as interim director when Karen and Bob moved to

Savannah after competition in Hawaii. We won the Regional contest and then we hired that "little guy", Jim Arns. While a member of Melodeers I was fortunate enough to win two golds and make a fool of myself during our Elvis package. I'm pretty good at that. I also directed a small chorus (Chain O Lakes) for 12 years.

But, in between that time, I got moved to Tulsa where I worked for Nancy Bergman as her secretary at our first headquarters office, an older house. Our file cabinets were in the bathtub. The new building

was built and we moved into a beautiful one story building. If you've been to Tulsa, I hope you were able to tour the offices. While in Tulsa, I also sang in a quartet with Nancy and we were fortunate enough to finish 10th at the Houston International Competition in 1966, just prior to my wedding in San Antonio. Now, my hubby, Don, is also a barbershopper and was directing the San Antonio Chordsmen at the time as well as singing in a district quartet. Our honeymoon was the District Contest and we had a bus with "Just Married" on the back window and his entire chorus and wives were on it. The first place we headed after checking in was.......... of course........the Woodshed Room. What else were you

thinking? The cherry on top of the weekend was the Chordsmen won the contest. Shortly thereafter, Don got orders for Viet Nam and I (now pregnant) moved back to Illinois to stay with my folks until his return. Yep, back to Melodeers. I now had the quartet "bug" and sang in several chapter quartets, including one with Maureen and Donna from Melo Edge. In 1981 Jubilation was formed and as they say, the rest is history (very OLD history). We won our crowns in 1985 after finishing third, second, and second. Not too shabby.

By the way, we are one of only 3 couples who have the distinction of both being quartet champions while married to each other. First were Bobbie & Clint Bostick (Cracker Jills & Autotowners), then us (Jubilation & Chiefs of Staff) and now Patti & Jeff Baker (Touche' & Nightlife). And, we are all still married to that same person (part of the rules).

Okay, I've ranted on long enough. Hope you find this a little interesting and certainly, full of ancient history! Love being part of Region 9 and would love to meet more of you. Don't be intimidated by our "shiny hats", we're really just regular folk.

What’s New at Platinum Coast?

Platinum Coast Chorus

The Platinum Coast Chorus has a had a very exciting new year to date! We are thrilled to have Elaine Haugan as our new Frontline Di-rector. She

joined us in January and fear-lessly directed our 37th Annual Show in March, and at competi-tion in Daytona. We missed competing the past two years ... but we're back!

Here are a few little "ditties" about Elaine . . . that we are

proud to share . . .

Elaine, a singer since a very young age, discovered Sweet Adelines when she was recruit-ed into Song of Atlanta in 1977 and has been "hooked" on bar-bershop music ever since! As a tenor, Elaine has competed al-most every year in choruses and quartets from Regions 23 and 9, including the Royal Palm Cho-rus, Women of Note, Spirit of the Gulf, and Fireworks! Quar-tet. Of her numerous Barber-shop medals, awards and mem-ories, she especially cherishes the first place medal won by Women of Note in 2005 at Inter-national Harmony Competition, and with Fireworks! Quartet when they placed 12th, their first time on the international stage!

Elaine has served on the Music Education Faculties of both re-gions. She obtained her SAI Di-rector's Certification in 2006, and has proudly served as As-sistant Director, Associate Di-

rector, and Interim Director of the Women of Note Chorus, and now as Frontline Director of Platinum Coast Chorus. Many good things are yet to come with our new director because she brings to us such wonderful hu-mor, cama-raderie and talent.

The PCC manage-ment team was official-ly installed in May at our annual banquet which was held at Via Tuscany Restaurant in Melbourne. Carol Schaub, Matron of Ceremonies, presided over the auspicious event. Team members include: Elaine Haugan, Director; Ju-dy Steele, Team lead-er; Nancy Henderson, Assistant Team lead-er; Denise Breit-weiser, Secretary; Chalice Thompson, Treasurer; Barb Tamaccio, Perfor-mance Manager and Shirley Graham, Membership Manag-er.

The chorus is hon-ored to announce the Marie Bennett Schol-arship Fund for local Brevard students who have an interest in barbershop music. The fund was created after the

passing of one of our basses, and long time Sweet Adeline, Marie Bennett. Her family gave generous donations in apprecia-tion of our of Musical Celebra-tion in Marie's memory.

Please come visit us! Re-hearsals are Thursdays, 6:30-9:30 p.m. at the West Mel-bourne Rec-reation & VA Com-plex, 2285 Minton Road (off HWY 192). Visit

www.platinumcoastchorus.com or on Facebook for more infor-mation.

This is dedicated to all my Sisters in Song, past, present, and future.

I have been a member of Sweet Adelines since May of 2001. During this time, I have been richly blessed with a colorful and varied tapestry of experiences…I’ve been a front-line director twice, sung in choruses large and small, stood on the stage in Las Vegas as an International competitor, coached both choruses and quartets, and performed in all kinds of venues, from private dinner parties to county fairs, from baseball stadiums to jewelry stores in malls. I’ve been privileged to be a member of several quartets along the way, each one with its own flavor and personality (and I’m very excited at the prospect of my next one!). And yet, with all of those memories under my belt, I can say with assurance that I never really knew what being a Sweet Adeline was truly all about until just this past year.

After having lived in Harpers Ferry, West Virginia for many years, singing as an active member of various choruses in Region 19, my husband and I relocated to Deltona, Florida in July of 2010. Of course, I was anxious to find a new chorus home, and based on recommendations from the Region 9 staff, I landed at Song of the Coast chorus in Ormond Beach. After serving in various

capacities in that chorus, including front-line director for not quite a year, some changes happened in my personal life that sparked a series of events

that have transformed my journey into something truly rare.

After having been unemployed for several months, I was finally

offered a new position at a firm in Winter Park in February of 2013, making

the commute to Ormond for rehearsals no longer viable. I started doing some

research as to my options…and I recalled attending a Regional performance by O-Town Sound, a brand-new chorus, that just lit up the room with energy and joy. I had a long telephone chat with Kay Webb, O-Town’s director, during which we talked about the challenges I had experienced during my directorship, and my need to find a new chorus home where I could truly grow as a singer and where my talents would be better used. She warmly invited me to come visit, and after having just too much fun as a guest, I started the process by which I would become one of the newest

baritones at O-Town.

Sadly, during this time, I was also struggling with the knowledge that I had a mass in my left breast . I was told that I had locally advanced breast cancer on February 26th. The news hit me hard, as it does with all new cancer patients, and it was a challenge at first to go to rehearsals in a positive frame of

mind. However, I was surrounded with such love and support as a new member, I came to realize that just being on O-Town’s risers was truly therapeutic for me, both physically and spiritually.

At first, I told very, very few of my O-Town sisters about the cancer- just enough gals so that if I had a meltdown during rehearsal, someone would know why. However, at our Chorus Retreat in March, I let more of the membership know what was going on, and the word spread quickly. Never, never have I felt more closely held than I did in the midst of my brand-new chorus mates that

weekend. It was so clear that they were choosing to embrace my journey as their own…you could simply FEEL

the energy being lifted up on my behalf. Knowing that I had that kind of support made it all the easier to find the positives in each experience, and make my plans forward with courage. I started to receive little “I’m thinking of you” gifts, and cards with warm messages of encouragement arrived almost daily.

As I prepared for surgery, I had a long talk with both my surgeon and my oncologist about timing. They asked if I had any big life events coming up that we needed to consider. “Well, “ I said, “there is one thing that would make all the difference in the world to me…if at all possible, I want to go to Contest and sing with my chorus in April.” I had expressed to both doctors that I knew that the positive energy and joy I was getting from singing with O-Town had made a huge impact on my emotional state, and I knew it would be a wonderful thing to experience Contest right before starting my treatment in earnest. To my great delight, they agreed to postpone my surgery until the Monday after Contest, so I could compete with my sisters. And what a Contest weekend it was!! Laughter, love, energy, and sheer joy…the perfect preparation for what would turn out to be a 6 ½ hour surgery to remove the cancer from my body. What followed was a miraculously speedy recovery, borne on the wings of the love and support from my Sweet Adeline friends, both old and new. When I felt well enough to return to rehearsal, I

was so warmly and enthusiastically welcomed that it brought tears to my eyes – tears of happiness and gratitude for

having found such an amazing chorus

family.

Since then, my O-Town sisters

have been with me every step of

the way…gifting me with a lovely

Prayer Shawl to keep me warm in

that chilly chemotherapy suite,

sending me cards and flowers to lift my spirits,

laughing with me over the naming of my breast

prostheses (Honorary O-Town Members Ginger and Spice!), exclaiming over my ever-shorter haircuts, and just making me feel all the way around that I am truly loved and cared for in a most special way, and held closely in prayer every single day.

I will never cease to be amazed, grateful, and humbled by the outpouring of support and friendship I have experienced in this chorus, from a group of gals who literally didn’t know me only a few short months ago. Today, I continue to do well in my recovery, and I know that a great deal of the reason why rests with the amazing, wonderful group of women I share the risers with at O-Town Sound …I’m DEFINITELY looking forward to being a proud part of our bright future. And THAT, my dear friends, is really what being in Sweet Adelines is all about.

Wishing you all the best that life can bring,

Wearing Queen Jan’s

crown!

SOS + Summer = Fun! By Diane Jackson

Sound of Sunshine

This sum-mer will have a new edge to it for the Sound of Sunshine Chorus. Sherry Mul-vaney, our new Mem-ber Reten-tion Coordi-nator, has some exciting plans for us. Sherry has been a mem-ber of Sound of Sunshine for just a few years but has taken on this role with a great gusto. Starting with the first rehearsal in May; she has surprises set up for us at each rehearsal.

Sherry is coordinating games and theme nights along with a door prize each night. Some of the things we have experienced are a patriotic day where we wore our red, white and blue and sang patriotic songs; anoth-er is the tacky tourist night which is done especially well in Flori-da. One night we had a special guest, the “Good Humor Lady.” Sherry dressed in all white and she and her team provided us with some icy treats.

She put together a great team to help her and they have been sworn to secrecy so that every rehearsal night will be a sur-prise. With all the hard work we

do learning new music, choreog-raphy and keeping our skills sharp, it’s great to have a small break to relax, meet our guests and reconnect with each other.

Song of the Coast

Song of the Coast Chorus’s sporty quartet, The PitchPipers, entertained baseball fans at Daytona Beach’s Jackie Robin-son Park to sing “The Star Spangled Banner” before a Day-tona Cubs game. The crowd en-joyed the national anthem in four- part barbershop harmony, and the mascot got ‘up close and personal’ with tenor, Diane Johnson; baritone, Joy Feulner; lead, Mary Ellen Stanchfield; and bass, Sheila Stohr.

Earlier this year, Song of the Coast Chorus members learned longtime baritone and hard-working associate member Ber-nie Hunt had been called home by Our Lord. Well into her eight-ies, Bernie had organized our recent elections, encouraging members to run for the board and provided remarkable slates of candidates. She was a famil-

iar smiling face at regional com-petition long after she had stopped singing in the chorus baritone section. In addition, she was a faithful Daytona Cubs fan, singer with the Kooky Ukes and Company G, mother, aunt, grandmother, great grandmoth-er, and mostly --- our beloved sister in song. We will miss Ber-nie, and the group that sang at her memorial service at the Port Orange United Church of Christ

(of which Bernie was a charter member and choir member) were grateful to have the oppor-tunity to say goodbye with “How we Sang Today” and “Alleluia.”

Song of the Coast is actively seeking a musical director. The search committee has set up an email account for correspond-ence with prospective directors: SOTCdirector-

Venetian Harmony Chorus, Venice, Florida, has celebrated two first-time ever (for us) events—a Mini Flash Mob and giving a scholarship to a young man.

Picture it, women golfers have just completed their final round for the season and they walk to greet their friends in the garden reception area of Plantation Golf and Country Club, Venice, Florida, for refreshments and awards for their successful season on golf. A few other women, also in golf attire seem to be joining the crowd. Suddenly a couple women break into song. Walking further into the midst of some 50 to 60 golfers, more women join the singing. The golfers look around with smiles on their faces as even more singers join the song—“Harmonize the World.”

The singers make their way to gather under the garden’s pergola to finish the song. Carol Kevin, the host, said “Ladies, you have just participated in a Flash Mob. Please welcome the Venetian Harmony Chorus.”

There was cheering and applause and requests for “encore!” The chorus sang “Sh-Boom” and “Jukebox Jive” We started singing at 4:30 and were finished 10 minutes later. What fun! And we can add “Flash Mob” to our list of performance possibilities for future audiences.

Also, it was just one week from the time Flo got the

first phone call until performance. “Good job, Venetian Harmony!! And we got a donation, too, “ said Eichar

Part of the donation went into our scholarship fund. Venetian Harmony Chorus has granted a music scholarship to Brian Campbell, senior at Venice High School. It came as a surprise to the graduate at Awards Night on May 23--which was a surprise to Flo Eichar, scholarship chair for Venetian Harmony. "We were prepared to present the scholarship to Brian, but the scholarship team at Venice High decided to surprise him with the news," said Eichar, "so it was a double surprise."

Brian explained the situation to the entire Venetian Harmony Chorus when he met with them recently. But there was another little surprise. "He not only read a thank you letter to the group, he offered each lady a candy treat as a symbol of his appreciation," said Eichar.

Although the chorus has

given scholarships in past years,

this is the first year it goes to a

young man. "He seemed very

deserving of our assistance.

Music is his passion, and we are

glad to help him in his future

educational endeavors," Eichar

continued. He plans to attend

pursuing a degree in historical

music research. The last few

years, he also formed his own

Bugle Boy.” This was Sunsation Quartet’s 5th time performing for Honor Flights out of Palm Beach International Airport.

The Women of Note Chorus sang their way through a very busy month and look forward to

rehearsing, more performances, and learning new music during the summer months.

....and the livin' is easy! Well, as you all know, in Florida it means preparing our homes and hurri-cane kits for possible storms, and moving a little slower be-cause of the higher heat, humidi-ty, and afternoon rains! We have said adieu to our snowbird friends and wish them a happy summer and safe return to us in the Fall.

Competition in Dayto-na Beach is over, and our fund raisers throughout the year allowed us to give three donations this year. The first was $1000 to SCF (State College of Florida) in Bradenton for a music scholarship. The second donation was $1000 to

Bradenton Christian School, and the third donation was $1000 to The Manatee Players for the beautiful new Manatee Perform-ing Arts Center on the newly-completed Riverwalk in down-town Bradenton along the Mana-tee River.

On April 30, we held our Installa-tion Dinner and our new officers were presented: (Left to right) Ellen Linsley, President; Elaine Lampman, Vice Presi-dent; Lisa Applequist, Treasurer; Jeanette Rothberg, Secretary.

We were entertained by three of our own quartets and enjoyed a dinner, camaraderie, laughs and singing -- even the wait staff en-joyed our singing!

On a Saturday in May we sang at a street festival on Anna Ma-ria Island called Wine on Pine along with many other musical acts, artists and some wonderful food and wine booths!

We will enjoy a few weeks off during July, take our vacations then, and start back strong for our next season!
