I worked on the Asian Studies Centre from the earliest design stages, through brief writing and feasibility assessment, working with the client to shape the project.
During the documentation stage, I detailed the concrete, petitions, ceilings, and internal glazing packages, working with engineering consultants.

Construction of the first building in the Masterplan, the new Snow Centre for Education in the Asian Century (Asian Studies Centre), is near completion.
Occupying approximately 2000 m2 over three storeys, the new flagship building for the Canberra Grammar School enables students to harness the opportunities in a changing world. It is important that Asian Studies Centre has a strong public presence and be an example of quality design. The design materialises the schools philosophy of engaging students in an active, self-directed, and enquiry based learning model. The building will nurture this with flexible collaborative spaces, visually linked by glass with areas for smaller focus groups and larger classrooms.
The design creates flexible learning spaces to accommodate multiple layouts and extend functionality beyond the traditional chalk and talk classroom.
I was significantly involved in creating the Masterplan, conducting initial site walks, writing design guidelines, and producing conceptual sketches and finished hand drawings.
As part of this project, I worked with heritage and landscape consultants on a conservation management plan for the school.
CANBERRA GRAMMAR SCHOOL
MASTERPLAN
ING
The Canberra Grammar School Masterplan is a narrative for the development and direction of the school. The masterplan outlines the existing condition of the built fabric and nominates preferred sites for future development. With a strong focus on the landscape setting, the design framework structures future building works to create a modern, accessible and legible campus.
The site has a relatively steep slope with a total fall of 28 metres across the site, enabling buildings to be accessed from multiple levels, with terraces made to create contained and formalised spaces. By expanding and strengthening the two main pathways through the senior school, this plan looks to use these spines as key focussing elements. The public spine reinforces and extends the east west pathway which runs through the main historic quadrangle. The student spine also runs east west and links the health and physical education building at one end, resource centre and oval access at the other.

I worked with leasing and marketing agents to bring together a proposal which included mixed use ground floor and flexible office and multi-residential tenancies over eleven floors.
Working within the confines of planning guidelines, I configured various test fits to present to the owner multiple ways in which the building could be leased.

Occupying a key site in the centre of Canberras business district, Section 26, which currently contains a series of vacant aging buildings, posed great potential. The site borders on one of Canberras major avenues to the west, and a heritage park to the south.
This was a speculative exercise to look at ways in which yield could be maximised for a flexible office and residential mix, within the framework of the Griffin plan. The project sought to thread market-style grocers and consumer retailers through the ground floor. By creating shelter against the extremes of temperature in Canberras climate, the design would enliven business activity and integrate the building with the urban rubric of the city.
The building offered a contemporary pallet of coloured glass and steel to carve pockets of space on the ground floor and create an indoor courtyard atrium with hanging meeting rooms.

At the return brief and test fit stages, we established the total number of staff, offices, workpoints, meeting rooms and ancillary facilities.
I then configured the placement of the Departments various working groups, based on the strength of the functional relationships between each group. I took into account contemporary workplace culture and government fitout requirements.

The Department of Social Services (DSS) intends to deliver office accommodation that provides an exciting, rewarding workplace to enable responsive, innovative, and efficient service delivery.
Building on the guidelines DJAS wrote for the Department of Finance on flexible work guidelines, this project uses a hybrid activity based working model.
This project provides DSS the opportunity to consolidate and co-locate branches that are currently located in other buildings, providing an environment that enhances connectivity and staff interaction.
A modular partitioning system has been proposed to maximise fitout flexibility and reduce churn costs. The test fit design allows workpoint footprints to be flexible modules, that can be interchanged into different built zones (including workstations, offices, small meeting rooms and utility areas).

As part of a masterplan for Parramatta CBD, the Council chose to run a competition across multiple sites.
Our project address a series of small laneways and forgotten spaces in a coherent strategy that emphasises light, sound, landscape and urban furniture.
THE THIRD LAYER: A SPACE FOR URBAN FOLIES

As part of the proposal, the strategy was applied to key sites, including an alley across the road from Bicentennial Square, Macquarie Lane, and an art playground. It was published as part of Parramatta City Centre Public Domain Framework Plan.
The agenda is to encourage appreciation and experience of a third layer of city spaces a layer that is finer in grain, more intimate in scale and in counterpoint to the main streets and the principal lane network. Mostly small and largely forgotten, this layer is important to save and expand as it provides contrast and permeability to the underlying structure of the city.
These third layer spaces are not bounded by an internal logic, but part of the larger whole of the city. They have an anatomy of thresholds and secondary spaces, creating the potential for a rich articulation.

The figure ground plan shows the extent of building definition to streets and public spaces and the building grain. At the beginning of the 21st century, Parramatta has considerable variety in the solid to void relationship as well as the grain of the buildings. Church Street has the most consistent grain. The large number of at grade car parks erodes the physical form of the city centre, as does the general lack of consistency in the scale and type of buildings within city streets.

The brief for the design and build process for Walt & Mazz: A Centenary Pop-up was to create a transportable Pop-up which could act as an event space, by placing shipping containers into a number of contexts throughout Canberra.
Walt & Mazz: A Centenary Pop-up transforms and reinterprets the use of the citys urban spaces on an intimate scale.

Two containers were reworked to create a gallery space (Mazz), activated by a bar (Walt).
The shipping containers were adapted, cut, sliced and welded allowing openings to extend its form. This created a light filled functional space out of a confined box.
The industrial and rough exterior juxtaposes against the soft and finely crafted interior. Each piece was carefully considered, reusing elements of the cut container to minimise wastage and transform the nature of the base form.
The project contributed to the cultural fabric of Canberra, through its creation of small, active spaces throughout the city, enlivening and reinterpreting the underutilised locations within the urban setting. By inviting inhabitants into the urban lounge room, this project transport the comfort of private spaces into the shared space of the city.
My exhibition explored the way light and shadow reveal and conceal, and ambiguity beyond the literal representation of built architecture.
Most of the paintings are not created from a fixed viewpoint, but express perceptions of a more abstract mode of visual awareness. They transform the linkage between individual elements into new relationships.

The material used include scored surfaces of masonite benchtops used in student architecture studios. These are transformed to accentuate the imperfections of the ephemeral.
This accentuates the raw nature of the construction process, as well as the structural remnants that reveal themselves in the process of a buildings decay.
The concept of patterning connects the paintings together, both visually and literally. The lines extending to the edge of the works symbolise the possibilities of space, boundless in all directions.
The relationship between the geometric focus and the atmospheric background is an exploration of spatial depths and perspectives.
