Gags, Jokes & PranksAnyone that has listened to the Bakersfi eld Marriott Community Spotlight during the second

intermission knows that I am a proponent of shenanigans. As such, I was delighted when I was in the locker room last week and I saw Donny Grover with a mischievous smile on his face as he cut the laces on Tylor Michel’s skates, while Michel was taking a shower. What a random act of

senseless hilarity.

I spoke with a few of the players about some of the pranks they have been involved in. Jay Lan-gager sat back and smiled as he recalled two jokes played on a teammate in Johnstown. “There was a guy on the team that used a wood stick. Now at the bottom of the stick there’s this sticker that goes all the way around. Anyway, one day before practice we peeled back the stickers and cut through most of the wood then replaced the stickers. So, he gets out there and takes his fi rst slapshot and breaks the stick. He thought that was odd, cause he rarely broke sticks, so he grabs his second stick and we riffl ed in a pass and he’s stick just explodes. He looked around slightly

confused and grabbed his last stick and after just 30 seconds or so he hits a slapshot and it breaks too. By that point we were just dying, of course after that he didn’t have a twig, but the confu-

sion on his face was priceless.”

“Then, this was to a different guy, we fi lled out an application for him to be on the TV show the bachelorette. He actually got a phone call from one of the producers wanting an interview. It

was classic.”

While sitting down with Mike Wirll, he said, “I don’t know why, but not too long ago we took all of Pope’s stuff and duct taped it. His shirts, shorts everything, we rolled the up into balls then wrapped em up with tons of duct tape. We then put it all at center ice, so he had to walk out onto

the ice to get it.”

Tylor Michel has seen and taken part of a few good gags. “One classic one is to take a guy’s stick and fi ll the shaft with water, then put the blade back on. When he comes out to practice the stick is heavier and with the water sloshing around in there it makes it diffi cult to puck handle.”

“Another one that can be dangerous is put tape on the bottom of a guy’s skates, so the minute he steps out onto the ice he’ll take a nasty spill. I wouldn’t recommend it if he doesn’t walk out

with his helmet on.”

With April Fools’ Day only a few days away, hopefully this inspires you out there to think of a prank or two for your co-workers. Remember nothing brings a team together like a good joke at

another’s expense.
