She was born on May 12, 1820. Her parents were two wealthy British traveling through Italy.

Florence was well educated in literature, music, drawing and the domestic art.

A woman of her social standing was expected to marry and dedicate her life to her family.

Florence Nightingale was a nurse in the city of Florencia, Italy, where she worked for many years.

Florence’s family oppose her career decision because in those days hospitals where dirty places and full of untrained personnel; nevertheless she became a nurse because she felt an early calling to serve.

In 1854, the British press reported that wounded soldiers in the Crimea War were being poorly attended.

This news triggered Florence’s concerning, so she gathered a group of nurses and travel to Turkey in order to help the needed soldiers.

Her arrival wasn’t celebrated by the many surgeons in the battlefront, who resented the interference of a woman.

Regardless of their opposition, Florence worked tirelessly to improve the conditions of the hospital.

She introduced serious changes in the British military medical care by increasing the standards for sanitation and nutrition, lowering significantly the mortality rates.

She became invalid over the years, nevertheless she continued having an influence on nursing standards and medical care and training.

In 1859 she helped to establish the first Visiting Nurse Association, and by 1860 she established a school that became a model for modern nursing training.

On August 13, 1910 Florence died while sleeping.

She was considered a pioneer of the Red Cross Societies, and also the first woman to received the British Order of Merit.

Florence Nightingale was known by the soldiers as the “lady with the lamp”, because she used to work late into the night, tending the sick and wounded.

Today she is remembered as a symbol of selfless caring and tireless service.
