longitude 3oE to 150E of Greenwich meridian and latitude 4oN to 14oN of equator

0 It is bounded to North by Niger Republic, to the east by Cameroon, Benin republic to the west and Atlantic ocean to the south.

0Nigeria has a population of about 150million0The total land area is approximately 923,768 km2. It is the

fourth largest country in west Africa

NIGERIA; political division0Nigeria is divided into thirty six political divisions called

states and the Federal capital territory located in Abuja.0Each of the 36 states is further subdivided into local

Government Areas.0The 36 states are sub-divided into six geo-political zones;

North-east, North-west, North-central, south-east, south-south, and south-west.

0There are 774 Local Government councils in Nigeria0Nigeria has been under Democratic rule since 1999

NIGERIA: people and culture

0Nigeria is a multi-ethnic Nation with over 350 different Ethnic groups. The three major languages are Hausa/Fulani mostly found in the North, Yoruba in the Southwest and Igbo at the south eastern part

0The two major religions in Nigeria are Islam and Christianity with few practicing traditional religion

0Nigerian people are very Hospitable, kind and hardworking

NIGERIA climate0The climate of Nigeria is the tropical wet and dry type.0The climate of Nigeria is affected by

1. Wind; there are two main air masses that affect climate of Nigeria, they are;0 Tropical maritime air masses (south west trade wind); this is responsible

for rainy seasons. It blows across the Atlantic ocean toward the coast and0 Tropical continental (North East trade wind); this is responsible for dry

season and it blows across the Sahara desert.

2. Rainfall; The annual amount of rainfall decrease inland from 2800mm in the extreme south to below 600mm in the extreme north. There are two main seasons;

1. Rainy seasons; this is longest in the south and

2. Dry season: this is longest in the north

Climate cont..Other factors that affect climate in Nigeria include:0TEMPERATURE REGIME: Nigeria is a hot country except in few areas like the Jos plateau does relief reduce temperature significantly. The diurnal and seasonal ranges of temperature increase inland from the coast.0ALTITUDE0OCEAN CURRENT; the warm Guinea current affects the Gulf of Guinea. It warm adjacent coastlands and brings adequate rainfall to the area

groups;0Forest vegetation0Savannah (grassland vegetation)

0 Guinea savannah0 Sudan savannah0 Sahel savannah and

0Montane vegetation

The forest vegetation cover the southern part and the thickness of the forest decrease progressively northward to grassland (savannah) to desert at the extreme northern end

NIGERIA, Relief0The relief of Nigeria is classified into two

1. The highland/plateaux and; this are areas above 300m above sea level and are grouped into four;

i. The north central highland which include ; high plains of Hausaland and the Jos plateau.

ii. The western upland; this cover most of the highland of Yoruba states e.g. Idanre, Apata hill e.t.c.

iii. The Eastern Highlands; this represent the highest zone in Nigeria. It includes; Adamawa mountain, Mandara mountain, Biu plateau, Obudu and Oban hill

iv. The eastern Scarpland: this is found in the eastern region of Nigeria. It include the Udi-Nsukka plateau

Relief cont...2. The lowlands: these are areas with height below

300m above sea level. It cover areas along the coast and along the valleys of major rivers: the major lowlands includes;

I. The Sokoto plain in the North-West

II. The Niger-Benue trough wrapping around the North-central plateau

III. The chad basin of Borno plain in the Northeast extremity

IV. The interior coastal lowlands of western Nigeria

V. The lower Niger Delta

VI. The Cross river basin e.t.c.

NIGERIA; Drainage0Nigerian river systems is divided into four main groups;

1. The Niger and Benue river system; this include 1. River Niger the longest and largest river in Nigeria and its tributaries

such as rivers Kaduna, Anambra, Moshi and Awun

2. River Benue which has its source from the eastern highland of Mandara mountain and its tributaries e.g rivers Gongola, Katsina Ala, Donga e.t.c.

0 The rivers west of the lower Niger0 This are found on the western highland of Yaruba highland which

include river ogun, Oshun, Osse and Ossiomo which flow directly into the Atlantic ocean

0 The rivers east of lower Niger

0 The rivers flowing into lake chad

0Nigerian use the 9-3-4 system of education (i.e. 9 years basic education, 3 year senior secondary school and 4 year university)

0There are numerous primary and secondary schools in Nigeria as well as universities polytechnics/mono-technics and colleges of education (Public and private)

0The nine year basic education is free in all public schools

NIGERIA; mineral resources0Nigeria is blessed with abundant mineral deposite which

include;0 Coal; around Udi hill in Enugu state and Okaba in Benue state0 Tin; found around Jos plateau, Bauchi, Zaria, Benue and Kano0 Columbite; this is mine along with Tin0 Iron ore; found around Itakpe, Ajjaokuta (Kogi state) and

Oshogbo in Osun state0 Crude oil and Gas; mostly exploited around the Niger-Delta,

both onshore and offshore0 Limestone; found around Shagamu/ewekoro, Ukpilla,

Nkalagu and Sokoto0 Gold; is found in Kabba (Niger state), Ilesha(osun), Zaria

(Kaduna), Aramoko Ekiti and Sokoto areas.

NIGERIA; major cities1. ABUJA; is a beautiful modern city build to

accommodate the Nigerian administrative headquarters.

2. LAGOS; The former Nigerian Capital. It is the commercial capital of Nigeria. There are sea ports (Apapa, tincan island) and international airport.

3. KANO; Is an ancient commercial center and cultural center.

4. Other cities includes; portharcut, Enugu, Kaduna, Maiduguri, Sokoto, Ibadan, Benin city, Akure, Bauchi e.t.c.
