Why does interoperability matter?

• Individuals and providers need access to the right information at the right time in a manner they can use to make decisions that impact their health regardless of geographic or organizational boundaries

• Typical Medicare beneficiary receives care from 2 primary care providers and 5 specialists each year

• Only 10-20% of health outcomes are attributable to health care

• Information needs to flow inside and outside the care delivery system to support health

NIEM Health Domain Stewardship

BackgroundHealth is a domain in the National Information Exchange Model (NIEM). ONC was the previous NIEM Health Domain Steward. The agreement between NIEM and ONC has expired and FHA has been asked to take over the role.

ProcessNIEM Domain Stewardship requirements are well-documented and established.

Decision & Next StepsIf FHA is approved to take on the Health Domain Stewardship, FHA would adopt the current structure, which extends the scope of stakeholders for NIEM purposes, and obtain resources to provide stewardship and modeling support.
