Dear Friends,
Well, here we are, one month into the
New Year, and what a New Year it has
been so far; joy and tragedy,
celebration and sadness, optimism and
pessimism. Sometimes when we seem
to be living on an uncontrollable Roller
Coaster we can feel as though we don’t
know whether we are proverbially
coming or going. It is as though what
we thought was stable and secure has
been swept along by forces that we
cannot manage or direct.
Since the beginning of the year we have
been confronted with disasters of one
kind or another (a crashed AirAsia
plane with many lives lost; a terrorist
atrocity in Paris with unbelievable
consequences; the on-going Ebola
disease outbreak in West Africa; storms
and severe weather conditions
affecting the U.K.) resulting in so much
confusion, anger and despair. There
have been occasions of celebration
(The Pope’s visit to Sri Lanka; stranded
cavers rescued from a pothole in North
Yorkshire; appointment of the first
female bishop in the Church of
England) that have lifted our hearts and
provided us with opportunities for
much happiness. Now to top it all we
have a General Election in May, which
will keep us all on our toes for the next
few weeks, as politicians from every
conceivable party, will regale us with
all the fantastic promises imaginable,
and that only they can fulfil.
Which brings me to remember God’s
grace – God’s grace means that as
awful as things can get He has been
there before us, He is there with us,
and He will be there long after we
have gone. His grace gives us the
means by which we can continue to be
who we are, despite or in spite of what
the world seems to throw at us.
It is only a couple of weeks since we
celebrated the birth of Our Lord – no
doubt the pine-needles are still re-
surfacing across the floor, and there’s
that odd bauble which was missed
when the decorations were taken
down and has still to find its way into
the ‘Christmas Decorations Box’. But it
is hoped that the real meaning and
purpose of Christmas has not
disappeared with those decorations,
or evaporated with festive fare and
parties.
I would like to bring back to our
attention the way in which Mary
THOUGHTS FROMTHOUGHTS FROMTHOUGHTS FROMTHOUGHTS FROM THE RECTORYTHE RECTORYTHE RECTORYTHE RECTORY

Paul
4
responded to being made the
instrument of God’s purpose of
becoming human. Mary celebrated the
fact that God could and can be trusted,
even when human events seem(ed) so
dreadful. This was because God would
actually reverse human roles. The
proud would be scattered, the
powerful would be taken down a peg
or two, and the lowly would be lifted
up. This is not good news to those who
speak words of hate and create
division. However, it is good news for
those who feel weak and powerless to
affirm the importance and value of all
humankind, Arab, Jew and Gentile.
The birth of Jesus affirms this essential
human dignity. All people are made in
the very image of God and God is
present in our image. Poor people
struggling with few choices, children
growing up in drug-filled
environments, single parents
struggling to get by, prisoners,
refugees, the frail elderly – are all
human beings with dignity. All people
are blessed in the sight of God.

number of vacancies which no one has

CHRISTMAS AT ST JOHN'S, HUNSINGORE
James Bell, Bishop for the Episcopal Area
of Ripon, was the guest preacher at the
Family Communion Service and Carols on
19 December and the congregation had
the opportunity to meet him informally
when we all enjoyed coffee and mince
pies afterwards. The Family Communion
Service on Christmas Day saw us without
an organist so Paul Spurgeon was not
only celebrant and preacher but operator
of recorded music too! Is there a budding
organist out there or someone who
knows how to manage recorded music
who could help out on those rare
occasions when Ian can't be with us?
FUTURE EVENTS
On Friday, 13 February, a Valentine
Dance will be held in Hunsingore village
hall. Included in the £20 ticket is a 3-
course dinner - bring your own drinks -
and dancing to the live band "Now and
Then", back by popular demand.
On Friday, 27 March, the Library Theatre
Company returns to the village hall, this
time to perform "My brilliant Divorce",
billed as a poignant yet funny play that
will touch the hearts of anyone who has
been loved! A £15 ticket includes a hot
supper - bring you own drinks - served at
7pm followed by the play at 7.45pm.
Please let Nigel (358516) or Paul
(358640) know if you plan to attend
either of these events. It is important
that the ladies who do the catering know
the numbers well in advance.
Last year the village hall was double
glazed and fixed screens were put up to
eliminate draughts. Now another heater
has been added so we can all be warm
and cosy - no need for those thermals!.
HUNSINGORE TO EXPAND?
The news that a property developer is to
seek planning permission to build 26
houses on the site where Goughs of
Hunsingore used to stand has been met
with mixed reactions. At the time of
going to press the public exhibition at
which plans for the proposed
development would be on display had
not taken place but no doubt but all will
be revealed in the fullness of time!
COWTHORPE CAROL SERVICE –
DECEMBER 2014
A congregation of 97 filled the Church of
St Michael & All Angels on Friday evening
December 19th 2014 for the annual
Cowthorpe candle-lit Service of Five
Lessons & Carols organised by Val &
7
Anthony Hackforth, led by the Rev. Paul
Spurgeon with Robert Ward-Campbell
on the harmonium and additional music
from the Cowthorpe Hand-Bell Ringers
before and during the service.
In his closing remarks the Rector
thanked everyone who shared in the
preparations and everyone who
attended the service.
Amanda and Christine Gee, Mona
Horstead, Jacqui Marsden, Hilda Perrett
and Val Hackforth decorated the church
with festive greenery. Christine, Mick
and Amanda Gee organised and
decorated a Christmas Prayer Tree.
Prayers from the tree will be blessed by
the Rector at a forthcoming service in
Hunsingore Church. Christine and Mick
Gee were also responsible for the
pathway lanterns and the Advent candle
as well as the candles on the walls and
in the chancel. David Sedgwick took
charge of the lighting of the gateway
and the church path. Arnold Warneken
and Mick Gee kindly loaned fire
extinguishers whilst Dave Livesey, Jim
Maclachlan and Susan Murphy agreed
to be Fire Marshalls in the event of an
emergency.
Jules Thompson was responsible for the
distribution of the service sheets; Jacqui
and Roger Marsden for the distribution
and lighting of the hand-held candles.
Young children – Tyler Buckby, Chloe
Wright and Lydia Murphy – read the first
three lessons. Paul Jewitt read the fourth
and the Rector concluded the readings
with the Christmas Gospel.
Mark Kettlewell and Derek Gaunt took the
collection which amounted to £216.32
and, as in previous years, this is shared
equally between Hunsingore Church and
The Churches Conservation Trust. All
members of the congregation are thanked
for their generosity.
After the service, Nicki and Steve
Cartledge kindly invited the whole
congregation to Ivyholme Cottage for
refreshments and mulled wine, which was
much appreciated by the many who
attended.
8
Santa came for breakfast with the
younger children during December and
the following day he appeared at the
School Christmas Fair.
We had a fairly serious heating problem
in Church – so repairs ate up a lot of our
newly raised funds.
The refurbishment of the Village Hall
continues and the Library is now
rehoused in its new room.
LOOKING FORWARD TO 2015
We hope to arrange a theatre evening
soon but details have yet to be finalised.
The village Art Group which meets once a
month on the second Monday is
attempting to expand to include crafts.
The meeting in February is to
concentrate on collage on a seascape
theme – but everyone is welcome to
work on any theme of their choice. This is
a friendly and supportive group which
would welcome any new members. Next
meeting is on Monday 9th
February.
KIRK HAMMERTON GARDENING CLUB
On Tuesday 24th
February 2015 we
welcome Mark Jackson, Head Gardener
at Newby Hall. As usual all are welcome,
non members at a charge of £3.00.
On Tuesday 31 March is the AGM
followed by a talk from Amy Lax on
Kitchen Gardens
All meeting are held on the last Tuesday

LENT GROUP 2015
We shall be meeting during Lent to make our personal and spiritual preparations for the celebration of Easter.
The theme will be “Journeying through the Middle East in Thought and Prayer”, we shall focus on one country
of the Middle East during each session.
Our meetings will take place on Monday afternoons in The Rectory at 2.30 pm on the following dates:
23rd February - Syria 2nd March - Israel
9th March - Lebanon 16th March - Egypt
23rd March - Palestine
Do join us for as much of the journey as you able to.
We started the New Year with a very
entertaining, yet instructive evening
with Jenny Hotson talking about &
demonstrating how to decorate
cupcakes. We clung to her every word &
movement as there is a cupcake
category in our group show in
September. We can all now tell our
fairy cakes, muffins & cupcakes apart &
are inspired to try out some of the new
techniques we have learned. Even
better, the demonstration pieces were
raffled off at the end of the evening &
almost every member went home with
at least one beautifully decorated cake
– all our New Year resolutions ruined in
one go!
We were also pleased to welcome 3
new members – the icing on the cake!

We have all had a bright start back to 2015
and are raring to go for the spring term.
Here are some extracts from our
curriculum letters (all found on our website
at:
www.kirkhammerton.n-yorks.sch.uk)
Class 1 - update from Mrs Roberts and Mrs
Greer:
As always in the Early Years, we plan our
work around the children's interests, so for
the first couple of weeks of term our topic
was Space (we made edible moon rock and
learned about light and dark)… now it has
moved onto a new topic: dragons! The
children have so many questions such as
‘Can we make a large dragon with recycled
materials?’, ‘Why does Wales have a
dragon on its flag?’ and ‘Can we write
stories and put on a puppet show for
dragons?’
Class 2 - update from Miss Lee:
Our topic this term is ‘Our World’. The
children are going to explore and learn
about the world we live in, starting with
our local area, before ‘travelling’ further
afield.
To launch this topic we had a very special
delivery at the end of last term… ‘Flat
Stanley’. Flat Stanley is the story of a boy
who is painlessly squashed by a pinboard
and becomes so thin that his parents are
able to post him around the world. Our
very own Flat Stanley arrived last year and
the children have been busy making their
own ‘Stanleys’ to post away. We hope that
our Flat Stanley’s will travel around the
world and send back letters, enabling us to
have a ‘hands on’ and personal way of
exploring the world. Each child will have
their own Flat Stanley, however there are a
number of ‘spare’ ones so if you have any
contacts that may be happy to be involved
please speak to Miss Lee, furthermore if
you have any travelling experiences or
artefacts you would be able to share please
also get in touch.
Photograph: Kirk Hammerton Primary School website
Class 3 - update from Mr Cooper
For our ‘Where do we live?’ topic we will
look deeply into questions raised by pupils
about their local, national and international
identity. What makes a city a city? Are we
British or English? Where does one river
start and another begin? Why did
Scotland want to leave the UK? What is
the European Union?
We will start by looking at our houses and
homes and our nearest villages, towns and
cities before ‘zooming out’ to our place in
the wider world. The recent Scottish
referendum was followed closely by Class 3
pupils - should Yorkshire become its own
country too? We will also look at football
around the world and whether or not
location and money leads to successful
team performances.
After half term we will take a similar
outward-looking path (moving from the
local to the international) but in terms of
physical geography (rivers, lakes, hills,
mountains etc.)

Lent, before Easter, is like Advent
before Christmas, a time of
preparation. Lent is when we
remember that Jesus prepared himself
for starting his ministry by going away
by himself for 40 days of fasting and
prayer. You can read about it in your
Bible: Matthew, chapter 4, versus 1-
11; Mark, chapter 1, versus 12-13 and
Luke, chapter 4, versus 1-13.
Jesus went into the wilderness, a quiet
lonely place away from people where
he could think things out. He knew
that his work would be hard, that
many people would not listen to him,
or if they listened, they would not
believe him. During these 40 days
Jesus made his choice: to work in
God’s way however hard that might
be.
Lent 2015 starts on Wednesday,
February 18th and ends on Thursday,
April 2nd 2015. Have you thought
about how YOU are going to prepare
yourself to follow Jesus this Lent?
For the next edition we would love
to include a Easter themed picture
or photograph from one of our
young readers. Entries to be sent to
the editor and to be received by 7th
March:
