Employment History

Architectural Assistant, SIMMONSHERRIFF LLPFreelance - My primary contract was to produce a 3D model and a series of concept visualisations used for design development and client presentations for the refurbishment of Holme Cultram Abbey in Cumbria which had been gutted in an arson attack. Further work undertaken has included presentation plans and site surveys.

Architectural Assistant, Neil Bowen Architects / HY ConsultingFreelance - I was engaged to produce presentation quality plans for a development site going for outline planning in Goole. The images are also to be used as marketing material to win more work form the client.

Architectural Assistant, Gillespies LLP (August 2007 - September 2008 & June 2009 - August 2009)During my time at Gillespies I worked alongside other team members on many projects, notably two regeneration masterplans, one for the Caldew Riverside area of Carlisle and The Minster Quarter in Doncaster, which involved close liaison with steering group members and the wider design team. Smaller projects included individual buildings such as a one off house in Aberford, Leeds and the new Conservatory Restaurant / Cafe at Greenhead Park which, blended an old Victorian glass house with a new timber clad restaurant building.Central Park, Darlington, The project was to produce a regulating plan and design code matrix for a new development of 600 homes and associated community and commercial buildings near the centre of Darlington. The regulating plan lays down the required standards for design and construction that the developer must meet.Victoria Viaduct and Caldew Riverside, Carlisle, The project was a Masterplan for the regeneration of a site alongside the Caldew river in Carlisle. Restraints include the bisecting of the site by the river, a railway line, and the West Walls (SAC) creating an isolated site with poor movement and derelict unused space. The masterplan aims to solve the movement problems and bring new life and use to the site creating a new quarter for Carlisle.Minster Quarter, Doncaster The project was a Masterplan for the area around Doncaster Minster. The area is currently isolated by a busy road and is under used and abused. The Masterplan aims to reintegrate the area with the City and help the Minster establish a role for itself in 21st century Doncaster.

Greenhead Park, Huddersfield The project involved work for a stage 2 HLF bid for the restoration of a significant Victorian Park in Huddersfield. The work included plans for the listed conservatory building to secure the structures future as well as providing new café / bar facilities adjacent to it. Additional work at Greenhead Park included work to refurbish the refreshment rooms providing new dining and office accommodation within. Nyman House, Aberford The project for a private client in Aberford, Leeds was for a new build dwelling within a conservation area. The proposed new house sits on a site that is partly occupied by the clients’ current property part of which will be demolished to make room for the new house. The proposals for the house blend

contemporary design with a vernacular twist. The house includes a photography studio on the lower ground floor while the second floor is the master bedroom suite which takes advantage of its height to capture views out from Aberford.

Further Work experienceHSBC Retail Design - Summer Placement. As part of this placement I worked on a variety of projects including the interior refurbishment of two office buildings, one of which was a high profile main office. 20/20 Research. I was hired by this market research agency to produce a scale plan of a racecourse development using AutoCAD and Photoshop and design a moveable marker system to represent and allow for the placement of potential retail units. The result was used by the company in a series of focus groups, and to support their final presentation of results to the client. The overall project was part of the redevelopment of Newmarket.Mille Design. I was employed by a building design company on a contract to survey properties and produce licensing application drawings in AutoCAD for Scottish and Newcastle Pub Enterprises.

Key Architectural SkillsDuring my time studying and in practice I have developed a wide range of architectural skills from hand draughting and sketching to CAD skills including AutoCAD, Photoshop, Sketch-up and Eco-tect. I am constantly improving my speed and proficiency in regards to these programmes. I have also developed a broad understanding of a wide range of architectural issues including in depth studies of sustainable and environmental design, urban design and design for rapid and repeatable construction. During the course of my diploma I have worked on projects focused on urban renewal and regeneration, the impact of flooding and climate change as well as homelessness and the role architecture has to play in its prevention. My design thesis looks at this issue and my proposals include disaster relief style shelters, that aim to provoke a reaction and raise awareness of the issue alongside a new model for homeless shelters. The shelter design demonstrates a way services across the sector can be brought together to provide progressive, consistent support to help people back into society. These projects continued themes I had begun studying during my degree and year in practice. Further areas of study and personal interest have included urban design and masterplanning, working with existing buildings and working within complex / existing landscapes.

I am proficient in a range of software and find it easy to pick up new packages as required. I have experience using Autodesks Eco-Tect and AutoCAD v2002 - 2010. I am highly capable and efficient and able to work to full British standard layering, single model environments and use xrefs. I can also produce 3D work with lighting, shadows and render I am also familiar with the basics of Revitt, Impression and Viz. I am proficient in Adobe InDesign, Illustrator and Photoshop and able to produce a wide range of diagrams,documents and images.I have an excellent understanding of Sketch Up and I am confident modelling both buildings and landscapes and creating animations

Personality / Interests

I am a friendly and social person, never afraid of a challenge. I am equally comfortable working in a team or by myself. I like to get fully involved with work including the social side of things. During my year at Gillespies I joined colleagues on various social outings including go-carting and taking part in the Leeds Dragon Boat Races as part of a charity rowing crew which was a great experience despite capsizing!

During my time studying I have taken an active part in university life, getting involved with course activities and wider university activities at both Institutions I have attended. While an Undergraduate I was elected as the student representative for Architecture and Environmental Design, which involved me representing the views of my fellow students in departmental meetings. I also helped to found the Sheffield Hallam Architecture Society and took on the role of treasurer for two years. I was also part of the team involved in organising the final exhibition.

I have a wide variety of interests both sporting and cultural. I currently play squash regularly. I am a keen swimmer and have been a member of Bradford swimming club, before which I was a member of Chapeltown Swimming club for over ten years. During that time I was team captain for two years and also served as the swimmers’ representative on the Club Board. I have competed to a county standard and have swum for the Sheffield and District squad.

I enjoy literature, film and theatre, watching and taking part. Over a seven year period of membership to the local theatre group Thurgoland Thespians, I was given a leading role in the annual pantomime on a number of occasions.
