ular news and updates on all town issues, from business devel-opments to schools and community events. We meet regularly with the First Selectman, attend town meetings from Planning and Zoning to Board of Finance, cover town events such as pa-rades and elections and visit new mom and pop businesses to get a flavor of the local economy.

Small town life is valued by all, but North Haven is a vibrant community on the forefront of modern medicine with the Yale New Haven Hospital’s campus on Devine Street and in educa-tion with the Quinnipiac University campus including the law school on Bassett Road.

Businesses thrive around town, from the new C. Cowles loca-tion on Bailey Road to retail businesses on Universal Drive and Washington Avenue.

The town of North Haven continues to be focused on bringing new businesses to our community. Our most recent success stories include Yale New Ha-ven Hospital’s campus on Devine Street, the Central Hospital for Veterinary Medicine on State Street, two major tenants in the former Quebecor site on State Street that include Red Thread and Park Storage Companies. New retail businesses continue to come to Universal Drive and major renovations and new businesses are coming to the North Haven Shopping Center and Northern Washington Avenue.

Our most recent announcement of bringing man-ufacturing to North Haven with C. Cowles coming into the old Marlin’s building will be very import-ant to our town from a tax revenue and job creation standpoint.

As we carefully integrate these new businesses and others into town, we also recognize how import-ant it is to maintain an outstanding quality of living for our residents. In the past two years, we have been named one of the hidden gems by a syndicated cable TV show, Today in America, as one of the most de-sirable places to live in the United States. This past month we have been rated in the top 10 of best cities and towns in Connecticut to own a home.

North Haven will continue to flourish in future years and will always be considered a very desirous community to live a raise a family.

MESSAGE FROM NORTH HAVEN ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT COMMISSION CHAIRMAN

The responsibility of the North Haven Economic Development Commission is to provide support for the First Selectman and his efforts to retain and grow businesses in our community and bring new businesses to the town of North Haven.

The economic vitality of our community is extremely import-ant to our success, and community development and housing development play an important role in that vitality. The recent announcement that Quinnipiac University has completed the re-construction of their North Haven campus, which now includes the Medical School and the Law School, has led to the need for additional housing units. In anticipation of that need in the area, a market rate apartment complex is currently under construction near the campus. The university and the housing development should act as a driver for additional retail and commercial devel-opment along northern Washington Avenue. There is also an age restricted market rate housing complex currently under construc-tion in the southern portion of town near the Yale New Haven Hospital’s campus on Devine Street, which will act as a driver for the businesses already located along State Street.

North Haven has a strong sense of community, which is en-hanced by the many activities that are available. An excellent example is the summer concert series on the green, which attracts enthusiastic crowds throughout the summer. Also, the historical society offers many events and the library engages children of all ages in many activities all year round.

The NHEDC strives to show that the town of North Haven is a great place to live, work and play.

June 17 was a big day for public school education in North Haven, because it was the day the town approved a funding referendum for the renovation of the middle school.

The origin for the idea of renovating the North Haven Middle School arose from a low NEASC rating in 2010 that threatened the school’s accreditation as well as the town’s pride in its educa-tional system.

“It will help us tremen-dously,” First Selectman Mike Freda said. “Our education system is the backbone of our community and a newly ren-ovated middle school will in-crease property values in our town. I’m confident about the future and growth of North Haven.”

Credit for the project goes

to the Middle School Building Committee, headed by Town Assessor Gary Johns, who oversaw a panel that meets frequently on issues concern-ing the hybrid plan that will erect a new classroom build-ing and renovate other areas of the school, including the auditorium, cafeteria and two gymnasiums. A new library/media center will also be built and the current classrooms will be demolished. Two new soccer fields with artificial turf will also be built.

The town approved $69.8 million in funding for the renovation that will be paid for with a bonding package, but the town will ultimately pay less. State reimbursement will be at least 30 percent, which reduces the town’s cost to $45-55 million. The town will also save $2,600,000 on

interest payments due to its Standard & Poor’s AAA rat-ing, which was recently an-nounced, according to Freda.

The hybrid option for the middle school project was chosen over three other op-tions: a total renovation, con-structing a new school or moving to the Gateway/Or-chard Hill School facility.

The project is also sup-ported by Third Selectman Sally Buemi who said, “Cur-rent conditions at the middle school are deplorable and stu-dents deserve a better learn-ing environment. Our school system drew residents to North Haven, so a new mid-dle school will benefit all property owners.”

From the major sports to cheerleading, field hockey and fencing there are all kinds of op-portunities for North Haven High School students to participate in school athletic programs.

Youth sports also flourish in town, including the Max Sinoway Baseball League, which has provided recreational and competitive base-ball to the youth of North Haven for 63 years and fielded 55 teams in seven divisions for 600 kids in 2014. The North Haven Girls Softball League offers competition in five divisions from kindergarten through 12th grade.

North Haven High School athletes don’t just play games, they support local charities. The football team holds a Spring Brawl game every year that raises money to help local families, and last year they raised $13,000 to support the family of Matthew Jacques, a six-year-old student at Montowese Elementary School stu-dent who died from a rare form of brain can-cer. “They knew they did something special,” NHHS football coach Anthony Sagnella said. “They knew they touched the family in a very unique way.”

As one drives the streets of North Haven it becomes appar-ent that there is a story to tell. Quinnipiac Avenue, Blue Hills Road, Sackett Point, Blakeslee Avenue, Clintonville Road – these aren’t street names one would find in every mid-size suburb in the Northeast. The names hint at the town’s roots, which spread deeply back in time.

North Haven’s first inhabi-tants settled here about 2,500 years ago; the Dutch explor-ers who arrived here in 1625 named them the Quinnipiacs after the river they traveled. Though the Quinnipiacs are long gone, we find evidence of them throughout North Haven – many stone tools and projec-tile points have been found in town. Street names like Quin-nipiac and Montowese Ave-nues, and local attractions like Sleeping Giant State Park (the “Blue Hills”) remind us of their presence here.

Though the Dutch explor-ers were the first Europeans to arrive, the English settled here. Some of the earliest fam-ilies to live in this area were the Bradleys, Todds, Ives, Beaches, Blakeslees, and Thorpes. In ad-dition to farming, there was a bog iron mine near what is today Pool Road. There was a tavern and a blacksmith in North Haven by the early 1700s, but not a church - the townspeople would have to travel to New Haven to attend services or meet in local homes for public worship.

As this small group of fam-ilies became established, their settlement came to be known as the Northeast Village. Deeds show that Washington Avenue and Pool Road bordered most of their properties. These roads were dirt, and based on trails left behind by the Native Americans. There was a bridge over the Quinnipiac River, ap-proximately where Broadway intersects with State Street to-day. This would also have been the site of a boat-building in-

dustry later in the century. There may have been a wharf at Sackett Point. The village increased in population and prospered.

The Northeast Village be-came North Haven when it was incorporated in 1786. The first Grand List showed farm-ing as the predominant pro-fession, and the number of sheep in North Haven equaled the number of persons living here. But farming wasn’t the only occupation – North Ha-ven’s natural resources con-tributed to other industries. Because the Quinnipiac was large enough, it could handle ocean-going vessels, and the timber available in town was therefore used to support a shipyard. Along North Haven’s rivers were rich clay deposits and these supplied the many brickyards that were estab-lished. The Blue Hills provided fuel wood for the kilns. By the mid-19th century North Haven had fully entered the Industrial Revolution with the establish-ment of the Clintonville Agri-cultural Works. David Clinton, the founder, was a farmer who spent his winters inventing de-vices that would make farming easier. By the 1840s his factory employed several men who made farm tools. This factory underscored the dual nature of work in North Haven – farming and industry.

The arrival of the 20th cen-

tury saw few changes – farm-ers and small industries were North Haven’s life blood. As time passed, though, the old farming families moved out and the immigrants new to town bought up the land – Val-entino, Pallato, Christoforo, Borelli, and Balleto became associated with market gar-dens across town. Small indus-tries made way for the larger ones – Pratt and Whitney, Cir-cuit Wise, and U.S. Surgical to name a few. Neighborhoods grew, schools and churches erected, and life continued here as before – quiet, yet in-dustrious. More roads were built, some bearing the names of town ancestors, some hint-ing at newer settlers like Tene-dine Drive and Laydon Avenue.

NORTH HAVEN HAS A HISTORICAL STORY TO TELL


Middletown Avenue is a commercial enclave but it also the location of Peter’s Rock, a trap rock peak part of the Metacomet Ridge that features a high point of 373 feet and 196 acres of forested land, making it the highest point and largest forested area in town.

The 360 degree view from the peak has been compared to the mountains of Vermont and New Hampshire and is unsurpassed in beauty. To the north, you can see Sleep-ing Giant and the Hanging Hills of Meriden. Look east-ward and view the trap rock quarry of Tilcon Tomasso. To the south is the New Ha-ven Harbor, and westward is Long Island, West Rock and the Quinnipiac River estuary.

Peter’s Rock Park features a growth of mixed hard-wood forest, high quality wetlands and rock outcrops. Steep slopes are found in portions of the site and a stream, which is eight to 12 feet wide, flows through the center of the park.

Peter’s Rock Association sponsored a National Trails Day hike at Peter’s Rock Park on June 7, a two-mile hike to the summit that in-cluded a tree identification by master gardener Walter Brockett.

Peter’s Rock Association maintains a network of trails on the property, which is open to residents and other visitors for hiking, picnick-ing, bird watching and other passive pursuits.

Parking lots are located on Middletown Avenue and Hermitage Lane.
