Ngoli Okide Graduated from BEng Tech (Hons) Petroleum and Gas
Engineering (Top-up) and studied the MSc Petroleum Engineering
I previously studied a chemical engineering degree and so
Teesside University has further developed my understanding and
knowledge in oil and gas industry. I have acquired a lot of other
skills in addition to technical skills.
Ocheje Ibrahim Graduated from BEng Tech (Hons) Petroleum and Gas
Engineering (Top-up)and studied the MSc Petroleum Engineering
Before joining this course, I had a HND in chemical engineering
but wanted to progress my knowledge further. I would recommend
Teesside University to everyone – especially those with HNDs who
are looking for top-up degree programmes. Teesside is the
place.
MSc Petroleum Engineering This master’s course covers aspects of
upstream and downstream processing of petroleum. It helps you
develop a critical understanding of petroleum technology, allowing
you to deepen and broaden your knowledge of professional techniques
and approaches. You develop your skills in synthesising information
from a variety of sources and develop effective decision-making
skills in solving complex petroleum technology problems.
Teesside University open learning engineering Teesside
University open learning engineering is a realistic way to deliver
high-quality engineering BTEC, HNC and HND programmes in a range of
engineering disciplines for people who are unable to attend
conventional classroom-based courses. For example, if you work
offshore or have an itinerant role in oil and gas infrastructure,
you can study remotely and flexibly in your own time.

Career opportunities The petroleum industry is subject to
dramatic changes of fortune over time, with the oil price capable
of very rapid rates of change in either direction. Petroleum,
however, remains the dominant source of energy, with current world
production of oil and gas at record rates. In this environment,
companies face increasing technological and commercial challenges
to keep their wells flowing and are increasingly dependent on input
from petroleum engineers and geoscientists.
Highly skilled petroleum and natural gas engineers are in demand
by oil and gas companies all over the world and are among the best
paid engineering professionals. You can enjoy wide and varied work
that could involve travel. Experienced petroleum engineers can earn
£52,000 to £95,000 a year (prospects.ac.uk 2015). When there is
demand, experienced freelance engineers may earn over £1,000 a
day.
School of Science, Engineering & Design Petroleum and gas
engineering
We deliver full and part-time petroleum and gas engineering
courses – ideal if you are progressing from further or higher
education, and if you are already in employment looking for further
academic and professional development.
Our MSc Petroleum Engineering is accredited by the Energy
Institute, under licence from the Engineering Council. This means
that it meets the requirements for further learning for Chartered
Engineer (CEng) under the provisions of UK-SPEC.
All our courses are supported by industry-standard laboratory
facilities.
Enhanced oil recovery and core analysis laboratoryThis
laboratory is equipped with core plugging and trimming, core
preparation and conventional core properties measurement equipment,
as well as special core analysis measurements such as fluid
relative permeability and rock surface wetting quantification. The
flow through porous media, enhanced oil recovery techniques and
core analysis are also undertaken in this lab.
Petrophysics and surface characterisation laboratory This
facility allows you to study the properties of rocks, particularly
measuring rock porosity, permeability and surface electric charge.
You can study rock wettability and adsorption/desorption potential
using digitised contact angle and thermogravimetric apparatus.
Drilling laboratoryThis laboratory is equipped with mud
measurement equipment including mud density, mud rheology and mud
filtration systems for you to measure mud cake and formation
damage. It provides a good opportunity for you develop awareness of
the importance of oilfield drilling fluids.

BEng Tech (Hons) Petroleum and Gas Engineering (Top-up)This
top-up is a unique course if you are holding a Higher National
Diploma (HND) and foundation degree in a relevant subject such as
engineering, chemistry and geology.
This course is specifically designed to fill the qualification
gap in the oil and gas industry by providing you with a progression
route to achieve a BEng (Hons) qualification in one year. You are a
suitable candidate if you are an experienced technician from
industry or a HND graduate.
Martins Adejo Edeikwu Petroleum Engineer for National Petroleum
Investment Management Services
I found the course rich in content and the modules delivered by
lecturers with experience in the petroleum industry. This
transcended the classroom walls – practical industrial knowledge
and skills backed by one of the best petroleum engineering study
laboratories in the UK. I chose Teesside University because it’s
the only university in the UK that offers the programme as a top-up
degree.
Khaled Younis A Mohamed MSc Petroleum Engineering graduate
Workover and Completion Supervisor, Libya
I work in the petroleum industry and found the course really
useful. I particularly enjoyed learning new things that helped me
in my career, especially the software simulations, drilling
engineering, enhanced oil recovery, hydrocarbon production and
reservoir engineering. Staff were very helpful and their experience
in the petroleum industry was evident during lectures.
Hassan Abubakar Graduated from BEng Tech (Hons) Petroleum and
Gas Engineering (Top-up) and studied the MSc Petroleum
Engineering
I had a degree in geology, but I felt that I needed to change
discipline to a more competitive one like petroleum engineering.
The lecturers are the best thing about my course – they are focused
on delivering the very best learning experience. I would recommend
Teesside University – the learning experience and the School
facilities are just amazing.
James Penketh Graduated from BEng Tech (Hons) Petroleum and Gas
Engineering (Top-up) and studied the MSc Petroleum Engineering
Before joining Teesside University he completed a HND Mechanical
Engineering. I would recommend Teesside University to anyone who
wants to study an industry-related course at the highest standard.
I’ve developed industry-specific knowledge and and the University
staff do their upmost to help students, ensuring they understand
what is taught.
