FIELDS FOR the Group 1 Temlee, Group 2 Rookie Rebel and the Group 2 Zoom Top – all sponsored by Macro Meats – have been confirmed, setting up what romises to be an extraordinary night’s racing at The Meadows on February 18. The panel – made up of representatives from The Meadows and the GRV Grading department – cut the original group of 66 greyhounds down to create three mouth-watering clashes over all distances at the Broadmeadows circuit, with over $200,000 in prizemoney on offer on the night. The contenders from the three invitation-only finals have amassed a combined prizemoney total of almost $3.9 million, won 28 Group races and broken a whopping 13 track records,

underlining the remarkable talent on show for the start of the three-week Australian Cup Carnival. T h e h e a d l i n e a c t w i l l undoubtedly be Australia’s newest staying superstar Miata, a winner of 19 races from just 22 starts, including a Group 1 win in the Galaxy on Saturday night and six track record-breaking efforts to date in her home state of Western Australia. The daughter of Bombastic Shiraz and Winsome Bluebird will assuredly start favourite in the Group 2 Macro Meats Zoom Top. This year’s Zoom Top will also create history with the first ever New Zealand-based chaser (Thrilling Brat) making the final field for trainer Karen Walsh.

PLEASE NOTE : Fields are not in box draw order. Box draw to take place on track on February 11.

Miata, unbeaten at her past ten starts and has produced six record breaking runs in her short career to date lines up in the Zoom Top on February 18. She was a runaway winner of WA’s Galaxy.

Noble Pedro, holder of the Wentworth Park and Dapto records will have to show some improvement on his lack lustre effort at The Meadows last Saturday evening. The hot $1.80 favourite was beaten easily by Stack ‘Em Flat and connections were quizzed on his poor performance. He will line up in the Rookie Rebel on February 18.

Glen Gallon didn’t have much luck in the Perth Cup on the weekend, but the Group 1 Brisbane Cup winner returns to Melbourne to tackle the Temlee classic at The Meadows on Saturday week. The hard chaser is no stranger to the Broadmeadows venue, running a gallant second to Godsend in the Maturity.

PAUL STUART’S superstar, Miata raced up to the expectations of her 4500 on-course fans and took out the Group 1 Sky Racing Galaxy in em-phatic style at Cannington last Satur-day night.

There was a real buzz on-course as Australia’s newest champ paraded to the 715 metres start… but Miata seemed unfazed by all the attention. Earlier on, Stuart had advised NGF, “She has had a perfect week in preparation for the race.”

Then, 41.30 seconds after the lids flew back, Miata demonstrated that, winning the Galaxy by 10 lengths and equalling her own track record time.

Miata dominated the market, starting at $1.40, with the well tried Zipping Lad ($5.80) and Shimaguni ($7.40), whilst all other runners were $19 and better. A huge roar from the crowd saw $120,000 Galaxy underway, with Kalden Mayhem slowest in an other-

wise even getaway. Heading into the first bend it was

Zipping Lad on the rail holding a half length lead over Shimaguni to his outer, with Miata between runners fourth, two lengths off the pace. Into the home straight a lap out and the favoured trio moved clear of the pack, with Zipping Lad still in charge but tracking four-wide.

The leader moved back to the rail into the second turn, clocking 15.45 for that section.

Shimaguni was again within a half length and Miata was railing pa-tiently, two off the leader. That pattern was maintained onto

the back section, with Miata making her move passing the release point to a huge cheer of approval from the parochial crowd.

The daughter of Bombastic Shiraz and Winsome Bluebird railed past Shimaguni before switching to the outside of Zipping Lad and took a slender lead into the final turn, run-ning a 29.51 split. It was all Miata from thereon, as she slipped away to a five lengths break for home. Unfinished vat that stage, she extended her advantage to 10 lengths passing the judge and the massive crowd.

Shimaguni battled home well to finish second, with Freeway Fame overtaking a tiring Zipping Lad to run a creditable third. The $80,000 first prize propelled Miata’s earnings to $159,000, and is likely to set the 28 months-old bitch on a year of riches and group glory.

For trainer, Paul Stuart there was as much relief as happiness in the performance of Miata.

Whilst the young trainer has pre-pared some outright superstars in his short career, he is not a man who seeks to be in the spotlight. “I thought we were in a bit of strife early on, with Shimaguni up front,” Stuart said. “She raced very well and waited her moment to take the gap between runners.” Miata’s next start will be at The Meadows on February 18 when she will again take on the cream of Aus-tralia’s stayers in the Group 2 Zoom Top.

“We will go over and trial at The

Meadows next weekend and stay theweek.”

Stuart also flagged a longer cam-paign for Miata in NSW, leading intothe Easter Egg Carnival. Miata became the tenth bitch totake out the Galaxy, which was beingrun for the 30th occasion.

She jumped from box four, thesame draw as her half-brother, BlueLorian, who was successful in 2011. George Dail ly told NGF,“Shimaguni took up a good positionbut we were beaten by a better dog.”

“Hopefully we do better when weclash again in fortnight.” Keith Harding described his thirdplacegetter, Freeway Fame as an hon-est performer, whilst describing Miataas a “champion”.

The gang’s all here: Taking centre stage is Paul Stuart and his WA champ, Miata, who has taken all before her. Last Saturday night at Cannington, scoring in runaway fashion and recording 41.30 to equal her own record when taking out the 715 metres Sky Racing Galaxy.

FEE $1,100 (inc GST) TOP TRAINER, Troy Sharpe reckons it was only Kay Cee Crash’s heart that got him over the line.

Kay Cee Crash (Collision - Kay Cee Chambers) led through-out to win a 520 metres Novice at Albion Park last Thursday night, but is unlikely to race again.

Kay Cee Crash ran 31.06, scor-ing by a half head over Satan Sad-dle, with a half head to Mocha Shocker third.

Troy Sharpe bred and trains the winner, who had to be taken from the track in an ambu-lance after he had broken his stop-per bone.

“I reckon he did it on the home turn,” said Troy. “You could see his tail swish and his head go up in the air. I thought he was going to pull up.”

“But he battled on and won. It was only his heart that got him home.”

A vet check at the kennels after the race found Kay Cee Crash had broken the stopper bone.

Troy said he would have the dog x-rayed the next morning, but he feared the worst.

“It’s probably the end of his career,” he said.

Sharpe has been in a Thursday night slump for the past few months but has put together a few wins this year already, only to be deflated instantly by this injury.

“He was no superstar,” Troy said of Kay Cee Crash, “but he is typical of the breed.”

“If they are winning city races at this young age, by the time they get to two and a half they have developed into better than handy dogs.”

“That’s what we were expect-ing with this dog.”

Memorable win DON’T BE surprised if there is Bralyn Grebes memorabilia avail-

able for sale on the internet in the next few weeks.

That’s because the son of Bombastic Shiraz and Bralyn Mai-sie is raced by Rob Fogerty, the head of Brotherhood Pride Sport-ing Memorabilia.

Trained by Tom Tzouvelis, Bralyn Grebes scored by a half length in 30.74 in a 520 metres Novice at Albion Park last Thurs-day night, beating Jackie Howe, with a length and a quarter to Mr. Bonfire third.

Rob, according to Tzouvelis, flies to the US every six weeks with memorabilia to be signed by sporting legends.

“Rob rang me out of the blue to find him a dog or two,” said Tom. “I actually poached him from Darren Russell, who had been training for Rob quite success-fully.”

Astute Northern Rivers judge, Shaun Speeding spotted Bralyn Grebes back in October last year and recommended he could be bought from breeder, Brad North-field.

“We didn’t pay much for the dog, and Rob asked me to train him,” said Tom.

“He came to us with a bit of a back problem, which we ironed out, and he’s no worries now.”

The winner is a son of North-field’s former National Futurity winner, Bralyn Maisie, who has proven herself an outstanding brood bitch.

Mr. Bonfire and Jackie Howe broke away early to lead into the back straight, but Bralyn Grebes

quickly loomed up on the home turn and ran down the leaders close to home.

“He’ll win a few races for us,” said Tom. “He’s a cheap dog now.”

One for the kids SAM and Jack, Charlize and Tris-tan… four youngsters enjoying their nights out at Albion Park, especially when their dog wins a race.

That’s what happened at Al-bion Park last Thursday night when Storm Surge rattled home for a narrow victory in a 520 metres Fifth Grade.

Sam and Jack are sons of Chris and Kirsty Essex, who run Big Dog Pet Foods, the highly success-ful meat and vitamins business in Brisbane that services the country.

Charlize and Tristan are the grandchildren of Ray Knudsen, who trains Storm Surge.

The four kids get to share in any prizemoney won by the dog.

Storm Surge (Collision – Night Storm) raced home quickly in the straight to win by a half length over early leader, Spring News in 30.33, with three and a quarter lengths to third placed Felix Shi-raz.

It was Storm Surge’s sixth vic-tory in 23 starts and his stakes now are $17,000.

The four children have plenty to cheer about.

Knudsen said Storm Surge is an Ipswich Auction dog, and he would soon head back to that track to concentrate on that rich series.

He and Essex devised the mat-ing to Collision with Chris’ former handy Albion Park performer, Night Storm, a sister to top flight race bitch and Group winner, Tiarta.

“She had four pups; one went to Tasmania, my dad (Rob) got one that races as Maywyn Belle and has won a few races, and we have Storm Surge and his brother, who at one time looked the better of the two,:” said Chris.

Knudsen said Storm Surge had kept improving.

“Three months ago he was struggling to run 520 metres, but a bit of a break around two years old and he has found the stamina he needs,” he said.

“He could run 600 metres the way he is racing.”

Essex’s son, Jack picked out Storm Surge as the “kid’s dog” when he was just a six week-old pup.

It’s been a great choice, to the tune of almost $2000 for each of them.

Kay Cee Crash, trained by Troy Sharpe, won last week’s 520 metres Novice at Albion Park on sheer courage and determination, completing the event in 31.06 with a damaged stopper bone.

Storm Surge gave his young connections a great thrill by landing a Fifth Grade, running the 520 metres journey in 30.33.

GREYHOUND RACING NSW (GRNSW) has announced it will enter into an agreement with the NSW Na-tional Coursing Association (NCA) to acquire a 70% share in Betchoice Gardens to ensure the Newcastle track’s long term sustainability. The $1.2 million transaction pro-vides GRNSW with a 70% ownership share of the track that has been de-veloped by the NCA and plays a piv-otal role in the region hosting 130 TAB race meetings each year. On completion of the transaction, GRNSW would have contributed 70% of the total capital construction costs associated with the development of Betchoice Gardens and therefore will

hold a 70% share in the ownership of the property. Under the new arrangement, the NCA as a co-owner will effectively lease and operate Betchoice Gardens subject to meeting all the GRNSW Club Operating Standards and retain-ing its registration as a club. GRNSW Chairman Professor Percy Allan AM said the transaction will also allow the NCA to eliminate its outstanding debts and prevent a po-tential creditor foreclosure of Betchoice Gardens which could have resulted in the venue being sold and used for non-greyhound purposes. “The last three years has been a difficult journey for the NCA. However

this decision will allow the NCA to now solely focus on making Betchoice Gardens the heart of grey-hound racing in the Hunter region. “The Gardens proposal and initial funding was approved by the Board of the Greyhound Racing Authority prior to the formation of GRNSW in 2003. Rather than abort the project, the Board of GRNSW decided to help fund its completion. “This arrangement will put this chapter to bed and ensures that the complex will remain a permanent fixture of the greyhound racing land-scape with majority ownership by the sport as a whole through GRNSW,” Professor Allan said.

ASTUTE TRAINER, Eric Castle made the right call when he gave his top grade performer, Main Drag a month off, as the son of Where’s Pedro returned for a first-up victory in the 520 metres Free For All at Wentworth Park last Saturday night. Following consistent racing, Main Drag qualified for the Gosford Cup at the beginning of January, but with a habit of missing the start creeping in to his racing pattern, it was decided to give the 34kg black chaser a spell. Competing in the Schweppes Stake, it was Main Drag that was rearin’ to go from box two, and when the starter released them it was Main Drag first out, along with the speedy Wez Da Risk, who was sporting the yellow singlet.

The first section was completed in a slick 5.42, and with the aid of the inside running, Main Drag was able to hold out Wez Da Risk at the first corner.

Emerging from the remainder, Undisputed Dos slotted into third spot as they headed to the back. Main Drag slipped away down the back, while Wez Da Risk and Undisputed dos were having their own battle for racing room. Turning for home Main Drag had pinched a three lengths break on his rivals and was set for his sixth victory at headquarters.

Despite Wez Da Risk rallying late, it was Main Drag that scored by

a length in 30.14, with Undisputed Dos holding on for third, a half length away. Main Drag, a December 2008 whelp, is from She’s Adams, and the Steve Connor owned racer has had 37 career starts for 15 wins and 10 plac-ings.

Wez Da Risk (Run The Risk x Wez Da Picnic), trained by Pauline Moran, has contested 32 events for 11 wins and 12 placings, whilst Undis-puted Dos (Pure Octane x Dos San-tos), a veteran of 63 appearances, has amassed 21 wins and 23 placings for trainer, Andy Lord.

A NEWCOMER to training ranks is Anthony Bragg and Time And Money gave him his first city success when a winner in the Multiquip Stake.

The daughter of Slater has had mixed form in her career to date, and a couple of trainers had moved her on when they thought her best was be-hind her.

As the owner, it was Anthony who decided to have a go himself, finding out if the Tony Messina bred greyhound could find another gear. Listening to some older and wiser

heads, plus having thorough muscle manipulations, Time And Money rewarded (as the name suggests) and won by doing something never seen before in 40 career starts. From box five, Time And Money jumped straight to the front, and hav-ing never led in a race previously, the red brindle chaser was always going to be hard to beat once they settled

down. Time And Money led from the speedy Chasing De Cash, and they staged a battle royal for the entire 520 metres. When the judge called a halt, Time And Money had held out Chas-ing De Cash by a neck in 30.35, with Full Blast a further one and a half lengths away third.

Time And Money (x Black Sea) has now won eight times with 19 placings.

By Prue Octane from Lucy Jet, trained by John Miles, Chasing De Cash has contested 40 races for 12 wins and 14 placings, whilst the vet-eran Full Blast (Go Forever x Helwa) ticked-up his 17th win that go with 55 placings at start 98 for Tony Medina.

HOT IRISH trained by Ben Aber-crombie, pinged the lids in pink vest to lead throughout in the Group 3 Perth Cup Consolation, recording 30.47.

Owner, Damon Fardig was thrilled with the performance say-ing, “She has a huge heart. She has been a little unlucky of late and this win is good reward for her consis-tent form.” The daughter of Premier Fan-tasy and Lovey Craves had over-come two heavy falls early in her career before forcing her way through to top grade, with 13 wins and seven placings from 25 starts. Hot Irish, a neck second to Things Missing in a heat, was sent out the $1.80 favourite.

She worked hard early to cross the well supported Big Jo King, leading them out of the straight in 5.72. Abercrombie’s chaser was three lengths clear through the pen and maintained the gap along the far side to leave the back in smart 18.85.

They were in ‘Indian file’ for home, with Big Jo King still leading the chase.

However, the Britton trained chaser could only close the margin, going down by one and a quarter lengths, with Spring Ruler a solid third for John Carmody. Ben Abercrombie told NGF, “She is a good bitch with impres-sive early pace.”

“She is likely to head over to

Dave Righetti’s kennels for a crack at Easter Egg series.” Prince Elite gave his bank bal-ance a healthy boost by taking out the $18,000 minor Perth Cup Con-solation.

The Queenslander went to the boxes as $3.60 second favourite for Lesley Wyatt, with Dyna Bert the $2.50 favourite. Beau One was away smartly on the rail and led Serena To Excel and Prince Elite out of the straight in 5.69.

Prince Elite and Dyna Bert were side by side onto the back and were set to pounce on the lamp-lighter, who was only a length clear.

Beau One left the paint and Prince Elite (Collision - Moonlite Elite) needed no further invitation, railing to a length lead over Dyna Bert off the back in 18.96. The least experienced chaser in the Perth Cup series never looked in trouble, running to the judge two lengths clear of Marked Down, who shaded Shintaro Samurai for sec-ond.

The winner recorded a smart 30.44 when claiming his sixth win from 13 outings.

The first prize rocketed his earnings to $19,000. Ricky Fall, representing the kennel, said after the race, “We are very happy with the win. He is still

a bit green but is growing in confi-dence with experience.”

“We whelped, reared and broke-in the dog at our Encounter Kennels property and are proud of

what he has done so far.” Prince Elite will head home be-

OAKS ROAD, prepared by Mark Gatt, avoided a rugged first turn to blitz away from the pack and record a seven lengths victory in $210,000 Group 1 Sky Racing Perth Cup.

The NSW chaser was sent out on the third line of betting at $5.80, with Glen Gallon $3.80 and Heston Bale backed solidly late in betting to start at even money. The bunny flew by and they were off, with Heston Bale and Oaks Road stepping away best.

The Gatt trained chaser cut across to the rail to lead by a length in a opening split of 5.68.

Uno Reltub pushed across to be second on the outside of Heston Bale,

with two lengths separating the entire field. The first bend was a messy affair.

Uno Reltub tried to cross Heston Bale on the rail to move into second, with the favourite looking to ease off the paint at the same time.

Heston Bale then came out onto Mepunga Geordie, who in turn knocked Glen Gallon out of conten-tion. Meanwhile, Oaks Road had burst away with an unassailable six lengths lead onto the back section in a slick 13.35.

Uno Reltub was railing in second spot, with Lektra Jay, who had railed through the first turn interference to be a clear third, three lengths to the good of Autoamerican. A sizzling 5.32 along the far side saw Oaks Road 10 lengths clear and with all four paws on the coveted Perth Cup trophy.

The Group 2 Bob Payne winner in January turned for home eight lengths clear of Lektra Jay before running out a seven lengths winner in 30.22.

Lektra Jay was $40,000 to the good for his second, with the Steve McKenna trained Autoamerican holding off the winner’s littermate in third place. Owner, Eddie Kingswell was

enjoying his first trip west, and to say he was thrilled with the win of his son of Spiral Nikita and Leprechaun Pace would be a vest understatement.

“It was an excellent run tonight. We thought he had a little bit more to give than in the heats and he did it well,” said Kingswell.

The winner’s purse nearly dou-bled Oaks Road’s earnings of $293,000. Daniel Gatt, representing the trainer said, “With such an even field we thought whoever got to the front early would win it.”

“We got there and benefitted from the trouble behind.”

Oaks Road will now head to Mel-bourne to take on the ‘by invitation’ The Temlee in a fortnight. It was the 37th running of the Perth Cup, with 27 winners coming from the inside four boxes; 16 of those from the inside two.

Oaks Road is the first NSW to take out the Cup since Rapid Journey in 1998.

He jumped in the check vest, the same as the 2011 winner, High Earner Lektra Jay, who is a likely starter in The Rookie Rebel, continued his affinity with the Cannington 530 me-tres trip, having won twice and placed three times from five attempts.

George Dailly said, “When Heston Bale was checked by the six (Uno Reltub) it made a rails run for Lektra Jay, who made the most of it.” Autoamerican pocked $20,000 for his third placing from the difficult outside draw, increasing his career earnings to $69,000 for owner, Tony Forte.

ON WHAT WAS a huge weekend for Group racing in the greyhound world, all eyes were centred upon Betchoice Gardens last Friday night for one of the most sought-after races on our calendar.

The NCA’s flagship event, the Newcastle Herald National Derby took centre stage, with victory going to the Syd Swain trained Sure As. Sure As, who is a litter brother to the West Australian superstar, Miata, added another Group 1 victory to his trainer’s CV, bringing Swain into the very elite category of NSW trainers. The man who enjoys his racing and big victories more than anyone else has now won five Group 1’s, with of course the highlight being Cyrus The Virus’ Golden Easter Egg. As runners arrived at the 515 me-tres starting point the punters had made the Jason Mackay trained McElle a pronounced favourite, whilst there was good support for Flavours and Sure As. As the lids opened the normally smart beginner, McElle was caught flat-footed from box three.

There was plenty of early crowd-ing as the centre drawn dogs were jammed up.

Ate To Much and General Trigga collided, while McElle also copped a slight touch.

Sure As began best from box two and with an early split of 4.95 just held out the pink, Free Will, who charged across in 4.96, while McElle gathered momentum and also clocked 4.96 at the corner.

Being in the middle of the leading group, McElle was quickly spat out the back, allowing Sure As and Free

Will to shoot clear. Sure As has been racing really well and once in front was always going to be hard to hold out.

Free Will was trying valiantly but it was obvious coming off the top bend that the leader still had plenty to offer. After making the final turn Sure As kicked clear, and with his connec-tions in fine voice, the son of Bom-bastic Shiraz raced to the judge un-troubled, collecting the $75,000 first prize. Sure As defeated the gallant bolter, Direct Bullet ($50) by three lengths, with Free Will a neck away third. Sure As (x Winsome Bluebird) took his earnings over the $100,000 with 29 career starts showing 13 wins and six placings.

Direct Bullet (Velocette x Direct Lass), trained by Mark Arncliffe, has had 15 career starts for two wins and nine placings, whilst Anthony Azzop-ardi prepares Free Will (Elite State x Formulate), who’s raced 11 times for five wins and five placings.

IT WAS the NCA’s night of nights at Betchoice Gardens last Friday when iyt was the girls’ turn to strut their stuff in the Forsythe’s National Futu-rity, and the Rose Pringle trained Midnight Capers delivered that elu-sive Group glory. At just two years of age, Midnight Capers has always had huge wrap, but despite a most consistent formcard, the major victories were not yet deliv-ered.

However, dressed in the red vest it was time to stand up and produce the goods. From the moment the lids opened Midnight Capers had her rivals cov-ered.

In the run to the first corner Mid-night Capers clocked 4.97, which was sufficiently quick enough to hold out the Victorian, By Starlight (4.98) Once they balanced up and went into the back Midnight Capers broke

clear, and it was a matter of times and margins. Midnight Capers had not been on her own in a leading role for some time and you could tell this daughter of Collision enjoyed the moment, with the back markers not in the pic-ture. Heading for home Midnight Ca-pers was well clear and ran strongly to the line, recording a comprehensive seven lengths victory over By Star-light, who held out Go Jessie’s Girl by a neck in the battle of the minors. In winning her first race at the track, Midnight Capers (x Midnight Movie) clocked 29.55 and has had 20 career starts that have realised eight wins and 10 placings for earnings just past $90,000.

By Starlight (Mogambo x Zulu Zepha) capped-off a great carnival for owner, Geoff Collins and trainer, Mick Fearnely having had 19 career starts for five wins and nine placings.

Trained by Norm Becroft, Go Jessie’s Girl (Collision x Go Mighty Mouse) to date has had 35 starts for 13 wins and 16 placings.

NEXT MONDAY NIGHT’S final of the Group 2 Tasracing Launceston Cup could be a stroll in the park for interstate invader, Radley Bale, given he was the only favourite to salute of the eight heat winners at The TOTE Racing Centre.

The Graeme Bate trained dog flew the lids from box four and was never headed on his way to a con-vincing three and a quarter lengths win over November Digger .

The son of Big Daddy Cool stopped the clock at 29.91, which was a good effort at his first look at the circle track.

Radley Bale has been racing with success in top company for some time, and from box three in next week’s final he should be very hard to beat if he displays the same good box manners that enabled him to win a heat so convincingly.

As winner of last year's Golden Easter Egg at Wentworth Park, Rad-ley Bale is clearly the best-performed dog to make it through to the Launceston Cup final.

The fastest heat winner was the Graeme Moate trained Shanlyn Hirdy, whio careered away from his rivals in the first of the eight heats and scored by nine lengths over Wicked Magic in a time of 25.69, with splits of 5.03 and 17.67 along the way.

Moate predicted some time back that the Victorian owned dog, raced by the Houndog Syndicate, had above average ability and could win a Group race without surprising.

Shanlyn Hirdy ($8.30) has only just returned to racing after an en-forced lay-off, so he can only im-prove on what he showed in his heat.

Victorian trainer, Jim Auld had to wait until the scratchings were declared before knowing whether his dog, Max A Zillion would gain a start.

Luckily for him and the dog's connections, the Mick Stringer trained Au Revour had to be with-drawn through injury, paving the way for Max A Zillion to line up in heat two.

Max A Zillion (Bombastic Shi-raz - Elite Monelli) began brilliantly from box three and eventually claimed the rail then went on to score by over six lengths from Ap-parently So, with Jethro almost a length astern.

The favourite, Tonneli Bale (Graeme Bate) was smashed late on all TABs to start favourite at $2.50 but was never in the hunt.

Lika Whisper produced the fast-est first split of the heat winners.

He clocked splits of 4.99 and 17.67 but his run-home was not the best.

The Brendan Pursell trained dog stopped the clock at 30.13, which was enough to defeat the long odds-on favourite, Rewind, who was com-ing off a win in the Group 2 Devon-port Cup.

Punters were left looking for a place to hide when Mick Stringer’s handy sprinter, New Recruit caused a boilover by winning a heat at dou-ble-figure odds ($15).

The Steve White trained Paua Of Darkness was heavily backed to start the $2.20 favourite ahead of Bate’s Carol Allen ($2.90).

But they both began only fairly and were inconvenienced at the first turn, while Penny’s Angel led from box two with New Recruit able to cross to the rail from box seven and give chase down the back stretch.

New Recruit hit the front in the home straight and went on to defeat Penny’s Angel by two lengths in 30.21, which was the slowest of the night.

The bolters kept coming when Sandbanker led all the way from box two to win at $50.

The Ted Medhurst trained dog was a finalist in the Group 1 Hobart Thousand but he was up against David Bale and Clyde’s Angel, final-ists in the Adelaide Cup.

Clyde's Angel tried hard but the early pressure of the chase took its toll and she had to settle for third, as Three Tradies finished powerfully to grab second.

Then it was Clyde’s Angel’s litter sister’s turn to rub salt into the wounds of the punters.

Strapper’s Angel ($38) began brilliantly from box two and once on the lure the Doug Hammersley trained bitch took control of the race and went on to defeat interstate in-vader, Strong Intention from the Ja-mie Ennis kennel.

The winning margin was a length, and the favourite appeared to have every chance to run the outsider down.

The remaining heat was won by the Anthony Bullock trained and owned Classic Camdale, who crossed early from box seven and in doing so tighten the favourite, Shireen Bale, causing her to be mid-field at the first turn. Shireen Bale had every chance to haul-in the leader but he proved too strong and clocked a reasonable 29.90, following splits of 5.11 and 17.71.

Brendan Pursell seemed quite pleased with the run of Lika W h is p e r , w h o l an d ed a Launceston Cup heat in 30.13.

QUITE A FEW handy performers have come to town after the recent Bathurst Carnival and produced the goods, with the Adam Wade trained Kyl’s Me Girl adding to the success-ful group following a scintillating all way victory in the wentworthpark.com.au Stake over 520 metres. Making it her fifth win over the course, Kyl’s Me Girl clocked a ca-reer best 29.99 after jumping straight

to the front from box seven. Ticking over quick sections,

Kyl’s Me Girl established a handy lead heading down the back and was all over a winner by the time heads were turned for home. Down the running Kyl’s Me Girl was untroubled, scoring by three and three quarter lengths over He’s So Shy and third placed Arena Flyer, who was a further one and three quar-ter lengths adrift. Kyl’s Me Girl, a daughter of by

Big Daddy Cool and I Love Lucy, to date has had nine wins and 15 plac-ings after 41 career starts. He’s So Shy (Spiral Nikita x Lep-rechaun Pace), trained by Jim Mi-callef, has had 28 career starts for seven wins and 12 placings, whilst John Chapman’s Arena Flyer (Pure Octane x Spring Vintage) from 46 career starts has collected 16 wins and 21 placings.

GREYHOUND RACING NSW (GRNSW) has advised the Mudgee & District Grey-hound Racing Club and the Forbes & District Greyhound Racing Club that their registration has been renewed for 2012, effective immediately. The Board of GRNSW did not renew Mudgee’s registration in December after it determined that the club had not met the requirements of the Operating Stan-dards, which is a condition for every NSW greyhound club. At the same time, the Board de-ferred consideration of Forbes’ registra-tion, due to that club missing the dead-line for submission of the Operating Standards. However, at a meeting on Tuesday 31 January the Board renewed both clubs’ registration for 2012 after receiv-ing documentation showing they satis-factorily met all of the 16 Operating Standards. The decision will allow both clubs to re-commence trialling immediately. Races will recommence at Forbes on Sunday 12 February and at Mudgee on Sunday 26 February. Greyhound Racing NSW Chairman Professor Percy Allan AM said it was imperative that all clubs in NSW met the Operating Standards currently in place. “The GRNSW Board regard the Operating Standards as a vital compo-nent of race club administration because they ensure adequate levels of service, efficiency, solvency, safety and account-ability,” Professor Allan said. “At the beginning of 2011, the Board reviewed and streamlined these stan-dards and the response from almost all NSW greyhound clubs has been excel-lent in regard to their documentation and procedures.” Moree Greyhound Racing Club remains unregistered for 2012.

AT THE MEADOWS last Saturday night the final of the Le Pine Funerals Grade 5 was conducted, and Prince Holyfield dealt a severe blow to his rivals when he scored in equal Best Of Night 34.54 over 600 metres. Heading to the boxes only two runners were given a chance, with punters opting for Prince Holyfield, sending him to trap five as the $2.10 popular elect, while Token Spinner from the rails alley was a $3.20 chance. Boxrise saw Icebox best away, with Prince Holyfield, Giant Kaiser and Token Spinner also in the mix rounding the3 initial bend. A lap out it was a close go be-tween Icebox and Prince Holyfield, with little separating the duo in an extra smart 8.94, then there was a gap to Token Spinner third but tracking wide. Although the leaders collided heavily rounding the next corner, it was still Icebox that showed the way with Prince Holyfield at his side, and they’d given the others the slip.

Again the front runners clashed, but this time Prince Holyfield took over to clock 22.10 coming off the back, with Icebox still alongside.

When Icebox found more bother rounding the final turn the race was all over bar the shouting.

Prince Holyfield drew clear. Raced by mother and son combo,

Diane and Ray Bartolo, the well bred son of Token Prince and Betty’s An-gel downed litter brother, Token Spinner, who flashed home late, while Fire Up Nate railed into third place, three and three quarter lengths further astern.

Unbeaten from three tries over the middle distance course at the Broadmeadows layout, Prince Holy-field ran a new PB to rack-up his eighth victory from 14 raceday ap-pearances, whilst the $5,470 winner’s purse advanced his bank balance to $24,945. AS MENTIONED, Prince Holy-field ran equal BON to score, and Stack ’Em Flat, who won the 600 metres Macro Meats Free For All, ran the same time when completing a hat-trick. It was a great field that faced the starter, with the in-form Noble Pedro sent to the two alley at $1.80 favour-ite. And whilst Noble Pedro dwelt slightly at the start, it was Don Chendo that accelerated to the front, clocked 8.93 and had a nice two lengths buffer over Cosmic Cooper a lap out. Still ahead of Cosmic Cooper coming off the back in 22.02, Don Chendo was struggling to fend-off an assault by Cosmic Cooper and Noble Pedro, who seemed to be struggling too.

Just when Don Chendo appeared to be doing enough to score, along came Stack ’Em Flat with a fast sprint. Charging through along the rail,

Stack ’Em Flat went home the better, winning the fast class event by a length, while Cosmic Cooper clung on for third.

Noble Pedro came under notice by the Stewards for his “ordinary” run, fading to finish fifth, beaten six and a half lengths by the winner, who gave him a sizeable start.

Stack ’Em Flat, owned by Bruce Lellman and trained by Graeme Bate, is a son of Bombastic Shiraz and Bar Crusher.

He’s raced on 79 occasions for 35 wins and 22 placings, earning $113,882, whilst over 600 metres at the Northcorp Boulevard venue his CV shows five wins from 14 at-tempts.

Complete with bonus CRAFTY LADY, a recent Wen-tworth Park and Sandown distance winner, was the one they wanted in the final of the Maurice Blackburn Grade 5 at The Meadows last week, sent to box six at $2.50, while Robert Andrew, Befitting and Mission Com-plete were kept safe in betting.

Befitting was expected to dictate the terms in front, and didn’t let sup-porters down.

She exited the seven trap fast to show the way over Mission Complete and Robert Andrew around the first bend. At this stage Crafty Lady was last, having bungled the start. But the fleet-of-foot Befitting had established a three lengths lead over Mission Complete in 16.04 with a circuit to go, and then there was a couple of lengths to Robert Andrew third. Down the back Mission Complete had taken a length from Befitting, who completed the next phase in 29.73, while Robert Andrew was also

steadily making ground. It took most of the 725 metres trip to catch Befitting, but Mission Com-plete finished a tad too well, scoring by three quarters of a length in 42.87, with Robert Andrew a head away third. Of the favourite, Crafty Lady, she never got going at all, passing a few tired greyhounds over the concluding stages to finish fourth.

Owned by Sam Cachia, the Mi-chelle Mallia-Magri, Mission Com-plete (Superman - Cacheci) notched his first win at The Meadows, whilst career-wise he’s earned $30,640 from nine wins and 16 placings after 40 starts, plus the all-important $2,400 GOBIS Bonus on the race.

Take Me Home had her cheer squad and supporters smoking cigars after her game win. Raced by Vince Tullio and trained at Lara by Amy Cole, the white and blue daughter of Where’s Pedro and Mystic Gale led all the way over the 600 metres.

Mission Complete landed the Maurice Blackburn Grade 5 final (GOBIS) for owner, Sean Cachia and trainer, Michelle Mallia-Magri. The son of Superman and Cacheci had the sit on front running Befitting and proved too strong in the home straight, hitting the line in 42.87 and collecting a $10,000 first prize, plus the all-important GOBIS Bonus.

MGRA Directors Rex Griffin and Terry Davis with Amy Cole and The Meadows GOTY winner, Stack ’Em Flat after his barnstorming win in a very classy Macro Meats Free To All, clocking 34.54.

The honest Launchinator is a veteran of 60 starts but has only visited The Meadows twice to tackle the 525 metres sprint trip. On Saturday evening, the Ian Freeman owned, Chris Johannsen trained hard chaser notched his 14th career win when posting a 30.19 victory.

IDIOT OF THE WEEK AWARD: A group gathered with the winning greyhound on the dais awaiting the result of Sandown Park’s Sunday Race 9 Chippa’s Final Fling B4 The Ring. Amber fluid mixed with testosterone is a recipe for trouble, and this idiot, who stripped down to his jocks, may have thought his post-race antics would be best described as funny to those on-course punters. This bunny was lucky, as track curator, Paul Curran was on the ball and saved him from being hit by a speeding lure. Imagine the backlash if he did collide with a speeding lure arm and the ensuing consequences. You can bet he would be the first to contact a legal firm and issue proceedings against Sandown Park for any injuries incurred in this stupid stunt. Then there’s the possibility of a ‘No Race’, and the impact it would cause to angry punters, participants and the greyhounds themselves. GRV Stewards mentioned the incident in the Stewards Report and have requested his presence at an inquiry. Can I have evens he’s doesn’t turn up! He’s not obligated to, as I assume he’s not a registered person. I would have thought the club would have contacted the local rozzers and handed him over. These incidents are becoming more frequent and the club should warn all future visitors of the consequences if people are stupid enough to invade the track. And I would also humbly suggest that a couple of large signs be placed at both entrances and on the front straight advising of the club’s views on the serious matter, and maybe a $5,000 fine for those who do.

VICTA TROY brought up back to back wins on the track and continued his terrific strike rate at Angle Park last Thursday night when he took out the Graves Engineering Mixed 3rd/4th Grade for trainer, Ron Schadow. Dressed in the blue vest and sent to the boxes as a $4.80 chance behind race favourite, Joken Kihael ($2.00), Victa Troy jumped only fairly but then mustered quickly to take the lead from Full Embargo through the first turn. Getting away from Full Embargo to lead by three lengths in the back straight, Victa Troy hit the accelerator and reached the top turn with a six lengths break. Rounding the final bend with the race firmly in his keeping, Victa Troy coasted to the line in no danger of defeat, despite losing some ground to Ruarc Entity. The son of Where’s Pedro and Teelah crossed the line four and a quarter lengths clear of Ruarc Entity in a new personal best 29.92, with Fat Wreck flashing home in third place. A winner of 17 races with eight placings from just 38 starts, Victa Troy is still improving with every run and has the ability to develop into one of the state’s best sprinters in 2012.

Johnny did JOHNNY WILL notched his third successive win at Angle Park on Thursday when the Petar Jovanovic trained chaser took out the Newton Crash Repairs Grade 4. Starting the $2.20 elect from the poor draw of six, Johnny Will jumped safely and got a nice run early to cross to the rail be just behind the

pacesetting King Ashy through the first turn behind. Railing past King Ashy down the back straight, Johnny Will worked to a clear lead, arriving at the top turn with a two lengths break. Rounding the final bend still a couple of lengths clear of King Ashy, Johnny Will proved too strong for his rivals. The son of Spiral Nikita and Lep-rechaun Place won by a length to King Ashy in 29.96, while Prince Ben held down third place.

Breeders hope’s up THREE HEATS of the Breeders Prel-ude 1 series were run at Angle Park last Wednesday, with the first two placegetters from each heat along with the two fastest thirds making their way through to Thursday night’s final.

HOPE’S UP stamped her author-ity on the series for trainer, Craig Butcher when she gave her rivals a galloping lesson in heat one. Drawn in box eight and starting a short-priced $1.50 favourite, Hope’s Up came out running and showed sizzling pace to cross the field and hold the early lead over Sheza Gre-nade through the first turn. Skipping away to lead by three lengths over Sheza Grenade in the

back straight, Hope’s Up was making every post a winner and extended her advantage to five lengths over My Little Star at the top turn. Rounding the final bend still well clear of My Little Star working hard to bridge the gap, Hope’s Up finished the race off well. The daughter of El Galo and Lit-tle Looper passed the post nearly seven lengths ahead of My Little Star in Best Of Day 30.10, with Sheza Grenade occupying third place.

UNITY put her best paws for-ward for trainer, Tony Rasmussen when she took out heat two in power-ful fashion. Poorly drawn in the six and start-ing value odds of $9.40 behind race favourite, Dakota Amigo ($3.60), Unity began only fairly and was caught in a crush through the first turn, pushed back to fifth behind the front running Dakota Amigo. Railing up behind a packing field in the back straight, Unity made the most of her luck when the leaders collided.

After racing past and taking the lead at the top turn Unity worked out to a three lengths break over Toorak Tango through the final bend.

Finishing the race full of running, the daughter of Where’s Pedro and Token Cabernet cruised home a four and a half lengths winner over Toorak

Tango in 30.54, with Dakota Amigo third.

FOOTROT FOO recorded his third win from five career starts for trainer, Bosco Stamenkovic when successful in the final heat. Nicely drawn in box one and starting well in the market at $3.90 behind race favourite, Stack ’Em High ($2.40), Footrot Foo was away fast and showed pace on the rail to hold the early lead over Racemussen through the first turn. Put under pressure by Racemus-sen down the back, Footrot Foo re-fused to surrender his advantage and reached the top turn still leading by two lengths. Rounding the final bend with Ra-cemussen closing to be within a length and looking for a way past, Footrot Foo responded well.

A son of Digital and What A Blast, he kicked back hard to hold a slender advantage up the home straight and scored by a length to the fast finishing Tippett in 30.62, while Racemussen was a close third. Top Dog WITH the first month of racing done and dusted, it’s no surprise to see Murray bridge trainer, Shaun Matcott take the front running in the Leading SA TAB Trainer with 19 winners to the end of January. Petar Jovanovic is off to a strong

start as well with 14 winners, fol-lowed by Troy Murray third on 11. The Leading Non-TAB trainer is very tight in the early going, with Don Turner, David Hall and Alisha Sutherland sharing the honours on two winners apieae. Emerley Carlos has taken the early lead in the SA Stud Dog with 4wins, while Scull Murphy holds sec-ond place on 2. The Leading SA Brood Bitch looks like being keenly contested once again, with Miss Eva Mai and Roxanne Passion sharing the lead on 6, followed by Excuse Me and Ka-nowna Belle sharing third place on 5. Judi Hurley holds the lead in the leading SA Breeder with 14, followed closely by Don Turner on 13 and Barry Lovegrove, whilst husband and wife team, Mike and Karen Wittholz share third place on 10. NEW OZCHASE COMPUTER SYSTEM THE OzChase computer system is a Racing System developed by Western Australia and New South Wales and will be the new computer system that GRSA will be using in the coming months mov-ing way from the current linked GRV system.

Other States utilising this computer system will be Tasmania and the North-ern Territory who have also moved away from GRV. Queensland is considering their options in regard to remaining by them-selves or joining a joint venture. There are two parts to getting the OzChase system up and running in the next few months. The first is providing WA with our data from the linked GRV racing system. This will allow WA to start populat-ing the OzChase system with South Australian details. We are also extracting the NT and Tasmania data on their behalf. The second part of OzChase is the development of the system by WA. Our staff at GRSA have been as-sisting WA in regard to grading, racing, results, breeding etc programs so that they have the basic principles of our requirements. This is going quite well and I am very positive about the service that we will receive from WA going forward. Time lines –Data from the GRV system for the three States and popu-lated in the OzChase system. Phase 1 – current Phase 2 – February 2012 (SA, NT, and Tasmania go live – Febru-ary/March 2012 depending on historical data uptake) Phase 3 – completion – April 2012 (NSW full go live – April/May 2012) (RWWA go live – May/June 2012) Phase 4 – State specific modifications – June 2012 I would ask our participants to be patient in regard to the transition from GRV to WA over the next few months and the potential problems that may occur during this process. Our racing administration staff will continue to do their best to provide the best service possible to our participants and industry.

THE LANDSCAPE of racing changes all the time. Twenty years ago, at greyhound tracks throughout Australia, there was a ring of bookmakers, numbering from a few to many. Nowadays, most tracks are with-out bookmakers at all. Tell a young person that there were 44 bookmakers at the Gabba and they think you’re having a ‘lend’ of them.

But it was true. Each state had its own TAB 20 years ago.

That’s changed a lot too. SuperTAB is a combination of

Victoria, ACT, Tasmania and West-ern Australian pools.

Tattsbet is Queensland, South Australia and the Northern Territory combined.

And New South Wales’ TAB Limited is there, still big and strong enough not to be combined with any-one.

But for how long? There’s about to be another change, as Tattsbet has purchased Tote Tasmania for $103 million.

Tasmanian pools will leave Su-perTAB and join Tattsbet next month. That won’t make much difference to holdings.

Tattsbet pools will probably go up by about as much as SuperTAB will go down.

But overall it’s just another move towards what will inevitably hap-pen – a national pool. Will that be a good or bad thing?

The only negative I can see is that once you get a monopoly, they can charge what they like.

That could be the case if you had one national TAB company, perhaps

it could increase the percentage ‘take’ from pools as it likes.

Some greyhound tracks in Amer-ica, for example, have a ‘take’ of 25%.

How would you like to be punt-ing with that much against you?

No thanks. What I reckon will happen even-tually in Australia is one national pool but not owned by one TAB or wagering operator.

Ta t t sbe t , Vi c to r i an TAB (SuperTAB) and TAB Limited (NSW) could combine their pools but retain their own companies or identi-ties. The ‘odd man’ out currently is Western Australia.

It’s the only state government owned TAB and there doesn’t seem any move over there to privatise that organisation.

But that hasn’t stopped Western Australia from joining pools, or co-mingling, as it’s referred to in the industry, with SuperTAB. Tassie change FROM NEXT MONTH, radio listen-ers in Tasmania will be hearing the program of Radio TAB, which is currently broadcast throughout Queensland, South Australia and the Northern Territory.

This service emanates from Bris-bane. Previews of all Tasmanian meet-ings will be added to the service.

Some might ask… who in Queensland or the Northern Territory is really interested in Tasmanian rac-ing?

The answer is… probably not many people at present.

But the same was said about South Australian racing when TAB Queensland purchased the South Australian TAB back in 2002.

Before too long, radio listeners in Queensland became more familiar with events in South Australia and the interest increased.

I guess the same could be said in reverse… South Australians knew and cared little of Queensland racing but soon came to be more familiar with it. New option WITH CAPALABA flood damaged, Ipswich will conduct non-TAB rac-ing each Saturday this month. The Ipswich club intends to run races over 288 metres from next Sat-urday.

Recently a set of eight starting boxes was installed at the 288 metres mark to provide a race distance of 732 metres. Previously there was a set of four boxes for trial purposes.

But now with a set of eight, races can be run over 288 and 732 metres. Got the time? HERE’S SOMETHING a little odd about the upcoming change of racing radio broadcasting into Tasmania out of Brisbane.

It will mean, during these sum-mer months, that if an announcer wants to give the time of day, he or she will have to do it four times.

Right now, as I write this, it’s 10.00am in Queensland, 10.30am in South Australia, 9.30am in the North-

ern Territory and 11.00am in Tasma-nia. Announcers get around the prob-lem by saying… it’s ten minutes to the next race, rather than give the time of day. Many years ago I used to present the ABC Radio Saturday afternoon sporting service. It was done from studios in Brisbane and broadcast throughout Queensland and New South Wales.

We always had to read out two sets of TAB dividends on every race broadcast.

And during the summer months, it was necessary to give two time calls.

It was a bit unwieldy, to say the least.

Consider this Stressed spelt backwards is des-serts.

THE OPENING ROUND of Australia’s richest Maiden race for greyhounds was run at Ipswich last Saturday night, with 10 of the 32 heat winners breaking 31.00, the quickest being 30.80 in the final heat. Reg Hazelgrove’s Wise Forecast ran that time, scoring in a cakewalk. The 20 months-old bitch is by Bombastic Shiraz out of the Hazelgrove family’s great producer, Whirly Storm.

Earlier in the night, Hazelgrove won with Brain Stormer (31.44) and Fine Forecast (31.21) from the same litter. Tony Brett won five heats, they were Harry the Great (Where’s Pedro - Queen Lauryn) in 30.95, Paua and Jewels (Where’s Pedro - Paua To Explode) 31.56, In Spades (Bombastic Shiraz - Velocity Thunder) 30.89, Tomorrow’s News (Bombastic Shiraz - Real Macoy) 31.15 and Amadeus Strikes (Bombastic Shiraz - Forgetful Lucy) in 31.22. Tendulkar won in 31.21 after bounc-ing off the running rail at the first turn when crossing to the inside from box six, and Brook Lee led all the way from box one in 30.99. “Tendulkar has a couple of cuts on his leg where he hit the fence but I’d say he will be alright for the second round of the series this Friday,” Apap said. Reg Kay had two winners, with Aston Carmelita (Pure Octane - Miss Elly Mint) running 30.99 and Great Gunns (Where’s Pedro - Cheeky Sprite) railed to the lead on the home turn to score in 31.20. Jake’s Thunder, trained by Jan War-ner, looked the goods with a 30.82 win.

The son of Collision and Tad Smarter led all the way from box eight. First and second in each qualifying race last weekend progress to the next round, which is eight heats on Friday in the twilight timeslot. Four semi-finals will follow on Friday, February 17.

The $40,000 to the winner grand final will be on Thursday night, February 23, with the Ipswich club granted full metropolitan status that night.

Back to back record breaking wins at Warragul suggest that Alpe D’Huez is on-track to make a real name for himself in 2012. Milldean Panther set Tracking sensation, Milldean Panther is set to return to action earlier than planned with a challenge for the SIS Live Shelbourne Tote Gold Cup now a very strong possibility.

Originally John O’Flynn had suggested that we would not see Milldean until the Easter Cup but the surprisingly good weather of re-cent weeks have brought about a revision of that thinking.

O’Flynn confirmed the news when report-ing that the unbeaten Shelbourne record holder did a flying hand-slip around Clonmel and will be finishing his stud duties.

O’Flynn said yesterday, “It is racing that comes first for him now. He is very well in himself, but we never really let him off.”

“He was getting the odd gallop the whole time and we just brought him down and back to Sean Bourke to have straws taken.”

“He has developed over the winter and is stronger around the backside.”

“We hadn’t been considering the Tote Gold Cup because we didn’t think the weather would be as good as it has been, and he would be as forward as he is. Weather will decide “The weather will totally decide his campaign, and if it turns bad in the next week we could

change our minds again.” “But the fact that he is so well in himself

and that the SIS Live Gold Cup is over 550 yards and is worth €30,000 has made us think again.”

“We have no doubt he will be better over 550”.

O’Flynn admits the dog “appears to be flying”.

“When we gave him a hand-slip in Clon-mel last week the locals said he did an unbe-lievable clock.”

“We will bring him back to Clonmel again on Saturday and then probably up to Shel-bourne on Saturday week.”

It now looks as though Milldean will run in the Tote Gold Cup and then the Easter Cup, but there is precious little competition-wise at Shelbourne between then (April 14th) and the Champion Stakes, which commences on July 14th.

Milldean’s highly rated kennel companion, Dear Pa is also ready to return, but his trainer doesn’t want to throw him into the Tote Gold Cup and is thinking of the Produce Stakes at Clonmel, although the English Derby remains a strong possibility.

RETIRING Greyhound Racing NSW Chairman, Professor Percy Allan AM has used his farewell statement to reflect on the various achievements of his Board during the past nine years. The industry elected GRNSW Board that Professor Allan currently presides over will hand over the baton to a new independent Board on February 10. Professor Allan said when he joined GRNSW in 2003 the Board held a dozen workshops around NSW to learn what the main grievances were in greyhound rac-ing. “The top five were an unfair grading policy, inadequate prizemoney, dilapi-dated racing venues, a poor community image and no TAB tracks west of the Great Dividing Range,” Professor Allan said. “Things are by no means perfect now, but thanks to the efforts of everyone committed to this sport, I think we can now say ‘mission accomplished.’ “Our grading policy is now widely accepted and attracts minimal criticism. Prizemoney will never satisfy everyone, but after big rises it’s now on par with other states.” “Our racing venues are now of a quality we can be proud to bring family and friends to. Our community image is sound because we have the best operat-ing standards of any racing code in Aus-tralia and thedogs.com.au is one of the best racing websites.” “We also have our own active Grey-hound As Pets adoption program, which we didn’t have 10 years ago. Importantly, the removal of muzzles from certified pet greyhounds (or Green-hounds as we call them) has become a reality.” “Finally we now have three inland TAB tracks; at Bathurst, Dubbo and Wagga. Furthermore the number of TAB race meetings is now 839 a year, com-pared with the 596 we were contracted to provide Tabcorp in 2002.” Looking forward, Professor Allan said the greyhound industry needed to con-tinue to lobby the NSW Government to amend the distribution of wagering reve-nue to the different racing codes. “Our contribution to TAB turnover in NSW has risen from 13% in 1999 to 20% now, yet we still get only 13% of the total TAB distribution to NSW racing codes,” Professor Allan said. “Agreement so that each racing code gets rewarded in proportion to its contribu-tion to wagering is what the independent government enquiry chaired by Alan Cam-eron recommended.” “Implementing the Cameron Report is one of the two big issues outstanding for this sport. The other one is extending our Wentworth Park lease well beyond 2027.” “The good news is that the NSW Minister for Racing, George Souris has told us he is keen to achieve that as soon as possible.” Professor Allan said the new inde-pendent GRNSW Board was a balance of people with greyhound racing, administra-tion, legal and financial experience. He predicted the Board would be a great success. “To everyone in this exciting sport – not least of all my fellow GRNSW Board Members and the excellent management team led by Brent Hogan that has served us - all the best for the future as I retire as Chairman of GRNSW. Thank you for your efforts and support since 2002. You have made greyhound racing great again,” Professor Allan concluded.

Daintree Angel, a daughter of Bombastic Shiraz and Daintree Lady, won five of her 41 starts, scoring at Sale over 440 metres in 25.28 and at Traralgon over 513 metres in 30.12.

She picked up a win at The Meadows over 600 metres in 35.26 and a Cranbourne 520 metres win in 30.94, plus a victory over 450 metres at Shepparton in 25.94.

The other members of her litter were Daintree Jewel (6 wins), Dain-tree Lover (10 wins), Daintree Palace (22 wins), Daintree Rocket (15 wins) and Smoke Home (26 wins).

The dam is beautifully bred from a litter that’s won 84 races, which suggests that the future prospects for these youngsters is bright. Knocka Norris WALMER breeder, Carl McGrath registered a litter by Knocka Norris (Elite State x Oriental Angel) from Blu Pie Girl, the four dogs and three bitches were whelped October 7.

Blu Pie Girl, a daughter of Colli-sion and Proven Rumour, was suc-cessful in nine of her 54 starts, win-ning at The Meadows over 525 me-tres in 30.58 and over 430 metres at Bendigo in 24.37, as well as over the 545 metres there in 31.66.

She scored twice at Ballarat over 450 metres with 25.84 her quickest and four times at Sandown over 515 metres with a PB of 30.23.

The other members of her litter were Cee Four (12 wins), Deadly Rumour (7 wins), Passport Pete (2 wins), Proven Bizarre (6 wins) and Proven Diego (5 wins).

The dam comes from the “Proven” female line and had ability, suggesting that these youngsters should have a bright future.

ROOKIE REBEL aspirant, Dyna Morris turned in a strong effort to take out the Rapidvite Accelerator Oil Mixed 4th/5th Grade over 595 me-tres.

Coming from box five at $3.00, the Andrea Dailly trained galloper was out reasonably, but by the time they swung into the straight the first time he was back in sixth spot.

Black Rage led them down to the Judge the first time in 9.25, with De-frim Bale second ahead of Bindi Waves and Dyna Morris was now fourth.

Defrim Bale took over going into the back and led through the second

checkpoint in 23.42, with Black Rage second and Dyna Morris now third in front of Bindi Waves.

Dyna Morris put it into top gear and closed in down the running.

He hit the front in the shadows of the post and got the verdict by a neck over Defrim Bale ($2.70 fav), with Bindi Waves ($31.60) five and three quarter lengths further astern.

Dyna Morris, a son of Collision and Gold Rush Bale, owned by Bren-dan Wheeler, clocked 34.42 to bring

up his first win in two goes at the trip, whilst the black chaser made it 14 wins in 58 career starts.

Odie’s bonus ODIE FOR NOW collected the GO-BIS Bonus when an easy all the way winner of the first semi-final of the GRV VBIS Maiden Series over 515 metres.

After lining up in box eight as favourite at $1.30, the son of Big Daddy Cool and Shanlyn Lass was off and gone, posting splits of 5.09 and 18.98 to control the race.

Odie For Now was never in any danger as he raced to the line seven and three quarter lengths clear of Kayo Marciarno ($10.70), with a head to third placed Zontea ($18.40).

Odie For Now clocked the new PB of 29.81 to make it two from two, both on the track.

The black and white youngster, owned by the You Can Do It Syndi-cate, was the first leg of a winning double for trainer, Kel Greenough.

MARK FULTON’S Arcadia Shi-raz gave Kel the double by taking out the second semi-final of the GRV VBIS Maiden Series over 515 me-tres.

Drawn in box four at $4.40, the daughter of Bombastic Shiraz and Tizz Magic ran sectionals of 5.13 and 18.98 at the head of affairs.

With the lead being reduced steadily, Arcadia Shiraz hung on the score by a half head over Sir Ducal ($1.70 fav), with Muza’s Girl ($9.20) seven lengths back in third spot.

Arcadia Shiraz recorded the new PB of 30.02 to make it two from two and collected the GOBIS Bonus for good measure.

Stacy scores MEPUNGA STACY picked up the GOBIS Bonus by taking out the third semi-final of the GRV VBIS Maiden Series over 515 metres.

After lining up in box two at

$3.40, the Joy McDowall trained youngster came out running and had no trouble whatsoever leading three the first two splits in 5.11 and 18.93.

Mepunga Stacy did it comforta-bly all the way to the Judge, defeat-ing Hellbent Lad ($2.60 fav) by three and a quarter lengths, while Family Interest ($17.20) collected third money, a length in arrears.

Mepunga Stacy, a daughter of Big Daddy Cool and Mepunga Dia-mond, owned by Barry Smith, re-corded the new PB of 29.79 to make it two from two at the trip, and two from three overall.

MEPUNGA MELACHI made it a litter double for Barry and Joy by finishing best to score in the San-down Greyhounds website Grade 5 over 515 metres in Best Of Night 29.61.

The white and blue galloper wore the pink vest at $5.20 to a six and a quarter lengths win over Usain Oc-

tane ($8.20), with Born A Legend ($37.20) two and three quarter lengths further afield.

This was Mepunga Melachi’s first win in two goes at the trip, and his second in seven attempts overall.

Red gets a bonus FAST RED secured the GOBIS Bo-nus by taking out the fourth semi-final of the GRV VBIS Maiden Se-ries over 515 metres. Wearing the white vest as favour-ite at $2.90, the daughter of Bombas-tic Shiraz and Hectic Schooner was away fairly and worked hard to get to second at the first mark, where Why Not Lizzie was ahead in 5.15, with Be Good Billy sitting third.

Fast Red railed to the lead going to the back and had a two lengths lead at the far turn in 19.24, with Why Not Lizzie second and Geor-gie’s Colour getting to third.

Fast Red stuck to her task well over the final stages, saluting by four and three quarter lengths over Why Not Lizzie ($3.10), with Georgie’s Colour ($58.30) the next to arrive, a length and three quarters away.

Fast Red recorded the new PB of 29.89 to make it two from two at the trip, and two from four career starts.

She is trained at Blind Bight by Scott Holmes for Belinda Harley.

THE LIFE OF A FLEA The famous Irish playwright, John B. Keane, who wrote the movie ‘The Field’, was once chastised from the pulpit for his ‘ungodly’ writings.

J.B. stood up in the church and informed the priest that his “fulminations would have as much effect on him as the flatulence of a flea!”

I am not able to enlighten you greatly with regards to flea flatulence, but I can tell you a little about their breeding habits.

The flea is the perfect guerrilla warrior, it attacks and then retreats to a safer environment where it can rest, and multiply.

It is a prolific producer. In a few months a female flea can lay up to 2000 eggs, about 60 per day.

After seven to ten days the flea eggs hatch and small flea larvae emerge.

These larvae like warm humid conditions out of direct sunlight, hence they migrate beneath boards or rugs where these type of conditions prevail.

If the temperature is above 37º Celsius and the humidity below 50% then the larvae will die in a couple of hours.

The larval stage is generally one to two weeks and then they form a little cocoon in which they develop into an adult flea over another one to two weeks, depending on the environmental conditions.

In total, the time taken for development from an egg to an adult is no less than a month, but can be a few months if the conditions are cool.

Once emerged, the flea is attracted

by the body warmth of the dog and also by the exhaled carbon dioxide.

They start to ingest skin and suck blood and can suck up to 15 times their body weight per day.

They can also mate and start laying eggs within two days of emerging from the cocoon.

The life cycle is complete. To break the cycle, in the past the

treatments were simply targeted at the parasites present on the host dog.

This population represents between 1% and 5% of the total flea population.

In addition, they were only able to kill the adult flea, leaving thousands of larvae and eggs to develop into a new generation within days.

Now we have a number of options to reduce flea populations. 1: Making the environment as unfriendly as possible for the developing flea.

As we have said the larvae likes warm, dark and moist conditions.

Basic kennel hygiene and regular cleaning of the bedding, boards and kennel furniture will drastically reduce the population levels.

On hot dry days it may pay to strip some kennels and expose the fabrics and boards to the sun for a few hours. 2: Using drugs to make the female fleas infertile.

The first of these a few years ago was program that was given monthly and

when the fleas ingested some of the dog’s blood it acted like a contraceptive.

Unfortunately, in a greyhound racing environment, this was not very reliable because not all greyhounds at a kennel or a racetrack had their ‘fleas on the pill’.

So the other fertile fleas still thrived on the non-treated dogs. 3: Treatments designed to kill the adults and the larval stage of the life cycle.

This has been the largest single improvement in flea control over the past 50 years.

By placing a small drop of a chemical like Advantage or Frontline on the skin of a dog once a month then, every flea in the coat and a lot of the larvae in the environment are affected by the chemical drop-out over a month, so that the flea population never gets a chance to develop.

T h e m e d i c a t i o n , C a p s t a r (nitenpyram) kills fleas on the dog for 24 hours and is very useful when moving dogs form an infested environment to flea-free conditions. 4: Flea shampoos or sprays containing pyrethrins, a natural oil produced by the chrysanthemum family or a synthetic derivative permethrin, knocks down fleas and persists in the coat for a couple of weeks but only kills adult fleas. 5: Some flea sprays have incorporated methoprene, which prevents larval stages developing into adults.

It’s residual activity lasts for five to six months.

Neglected in the betting ring, honest chaser Utter Domination went straight to the front and landed his second win in three days with his $17 victory in 29.89. Raced by The Money Syndicate and trained at Tynong by Carl Haas, the fawn sprinter was also successful at Logan Park on Tuesday night.

A running double for the Greenough kennel when Odie For Now and kennelmate Arcadia Shiraz took out the first two events. Both were winners of their respective GRV VBIS semis with Odie For One clocking 29.81 and Arcadia Shiraz, handled by Angela Jackson, registering 30.02. Arcadia Shiraz is raced by Mark Fulton who had his family trackside to support the Bombastic Shiraz and Tizz Magic youngster.

Big night at Sandown Park for Warrnambool lads Barry Smith and Ash McDowall. The pair have bonded a long friendship over many years, with Barry Smith providing the quality racing stock whilst Ash and wife Joy handle the training aspect. The boys produced a winning double with littermates Mepunga Stacy and Mepunga Melachi scoring impressive wins over the 515 metres trip. Both are youngsters from an April 2010 litter of Big Daddy Cool and Mepunga Diamond. “Stacy” won her respective semi of the GRV VBIS series with an all the way victory in 29.79, whilst “Melachi” crunched his rivals with an eye-catching performance in the final even, overtaking the leader with a very strong win in a BON 29.61.

Two “carrot tops” combined to produce the winner of the fourth semi of the GRV VBIS series last week. Fast Red, raced by Bendigo and Shepparton’s roving GM Troy Harley’s better half, Belinda Harley and Scotty Holmes worked home hard to score a 29.89 victory. A red and fawn daughter of Bombastic Shiraz and Hectic Schooner, Fast Red hit the line hard in posting her second win over the 515 metres trip.

National Greyhound Form, Thursday, February 9th, 2012 – Page 63NATIONAL GREYHOUND FORM NOW ON SALE WEDNESDAY IN NSW - Distributed by John Fairfax.

HE MAY have missed calling his 40th Sale Cup, but wasn’t it good to hear Peter Eustace back in his old Friday twilight timeslot at Glenview Park calling the Traralgon meeting on January 7.

Pete, wonderful to have you back on the air waves, and good luck with your battle.

You never missed a beat, espe-cially when Caramel Fudge saluted; “how sweet it is”.

Keep punching, from all your many friends in the greyhound and racing game.

Honesty doesn’t pay WONDERING out loud here.

A trainer entered a greyhound in a Victorian provincial Grade 5 event and then re-entered the same grey-hound for another Grade 5 race at the same track three days later.

Not to confuse anyone, both nominations were for the same dis-tance, and yes, the first meeting had-n’t been run before the second meet-ing fields were published.

It’s called “beat the grader” in South Australia, and happens occa-sionally whenever nominations over-lap during holiday periods.

Now the trainer was fortunate to win on the Wednesday night program but was unsure of whether his grey-hound was still eligible to tackle his second Grade 5 race at the same track a few days later.

So he contacted GRV, but unfor-tunately didn’t get a response to clar-ify whether he could “double-up” on the Saturday afternoon program.

He decides to take matters into his own hands and opts not to take the dog to the track.

His runner is declared a late scratching “by order of stewards”.

Thankfully he isn’t pinged and fined for the late scratching, but con-

sidering he alerted GRV originally, asking for a ruling on his dog’s eligi-bility and wasn’t given one prior to the meeting, surely he’s entitled to some type of compensation.

Fat chance, I’m reliably told.

Hook, line and sinker GREYHOUND folk who missed out on a little break over Christmas have an opportunity to enjoy some R & R in early February.

Jeff Guy, mine host of Horsham’s Exchange Hotel and part-time fishing trip organizer, along with Tommy Dailly, will head over to Kangaroo Island on February 12.

Tour departs via air conditioned bus from Jeff’s watering hole in Hor-sham early on Sunday morning and heads for Penneshaw, where the Sealink ferry transports the group to Kangaroo Island, where two days of superb fishing is assured.

Those lucky anglers are guaran-teed fine cuisine, supplied by Jeff’s hotel chef, plus all the fish you can catch, and you don’t come back empty-handed.

Those who have the misfortune to bunk with Tommy Dailly, make sure you take your ear plugs.

I can thoroughly recommend the adventure, the dining, ambience and the fishing is first class.

Rally to plug the gaps OTL received some glowing reports on the marvellous effort by volun-teers who actually carried out the modifications to the dodgy conductor rail at Devonport.

Unable to get assurances that the recent $100K re-fit would be checked and completed by contractors prior to their Devonport Cup carnival, the bush telegraph swung into action, and OTL’s source revealed it was only through the response of dedicated “doggie” people that enabled the club to foot the bill themselves and repair the expansion gaps that were causing the rail to buckle.

“It’s working perfectly now and hopefully the problem has been prop-erly ironed out.”

But that’s not the end of Tasma-nia’s racing’s problems down on the Apple Isle.

Seems the last two races on the recent Launceston gallops program were cancelled because the lighting towers caught on fire.

Neat feat WITH the domination of the Wheeler lines, winning many multiple races with well bred littermates, it was re-freshing to see four individual victors from the Premier Fantasy and Pearlee Surprise litter salute for their respec-tive trainers recently.

Beautiful Noise, Carlow Queen, Lever Footprint and Tania Two Shoes were all successful over a three day stint.

Tania Two Shoes saluted at Shepparton on January 23 in a siz-zling Best Of Night 21.91, whilst Carlow Queen followed up at the same track the following night.

Lever Footprint and Beautiful Noise were a litter and kennel double for Andy and Judy Stewart on Janu-ary 26.

Carlow Queen is raced by the Hopkins And Brown Syndicate and trained by the ‘Mayor’ of Melton, Norm Walls, whilst the other three littermates are raced and prepared by fellow Melton residents, Andy and Judy Stewart.

So far the May 2009 litter has won 37 races and are competitive on

both the city and provincial venues and have shown plenty of versatility, winning over sprint and middle dis-tances.

Comment I REFER to ‘On The Line’ in the NGF on Thursday 19 January and the Transportation of Greyhounds.

We appreciate that the transporta-tion of greyhounds is a cross-border issue and as such have attached the GRNSW’s Code Of Practice (effective 1 July 2011) for your infor-mation and reference, section 11 in relation to transport.

To ensure compliance, GRNSW Integrity Officers inspect modes of transport as a key area in any new license application or as part of rou-tine kennel inspections of currently licensed persons.

Should you require any further information, please contact me or our GM Integrity and Racing, Bill Fan-ning.

Kind Regards Tony O’Mara, General Manager, Growth and Sus-tainability, GRNSW. PS: It appears GRV has launched an investigation into an incident regard-ing the overloading of greyhounds but has yet to release the outcome of that inquiry.

Pays his way ROBERT ANDREW, raced by high-profile AFL media man, Geoff Slattery, completed a rare feat re-cently when the versatile black chaser saluted over the staying trip at The Meadows.

The victory may not have been significant to many punters, but Robert Andrew’s distance win com-pleted the treble at both city venues.

He has now won over 515, 595 and 715 metres at Sandown Park and did likewise at the Northcorp Boule-vard venue with wins over the 525, 600 and his latest 725 metres win on January 28.

A very honest chaser, who has overcome more than his share of seri-ous injuries, he epitomizes the ‘bread and butter’ tag, picking up 27 prizemoney cheques amounting to nearly $70,000 from only 56 appear-ances.

Yankee influence THE INFLUENCE of imported sires has never been higher in this country, and we often see the best of somestud dogs as their daughters head to the breeding barn.

Former No. 1 American sire, Kiowa Sweet Trey, who has plenty of offspring gracing our Aussie tracks, now seems to be making a name for himself down under and in his own right as a producer of quality brood bitches.

His daughter, Greys Destiny, an imported daughter of KST and Greys Nose Diva, is responsible for one of the hottest young litters currently rac-ing in Victoria.

Raced by Lara resident, Norm Rinaldi, her mating to Where’s Pedro has produced five pups that have won on Victorian metropolitan tracks, in-cluding General Destini (Sandown Park 29.56), and Destini Bambini (Sandown Park 29.69 and 30.30 at The Meadows).

Another daughter of KST (Kingston Bale) is the dam of the very speedy Geelong Young Star Classic winner, Dyna Gala, trained by Team Dailly.

And it looks as if other breeders have cottoned-on, with a very nice litter advertised in NGF recently.

Dixie Kong, a city winningdaughter of KST and the four-time winning beautifully bred Quidame, has a litter to Where’s Pedro that is sure to create some interest, espe-cially as they trace back to a damline responsible for the likes of Texas Gold, Symmetry, Tricky Creek and the NZ champion, Swift Fantasy, all respective Group 1 winners.

I don’t know what your

problem is but I bet it’s hard to

pronounce.

GOT SOMETHING TO SAY? phone: (03) 9372 0677 Fax: (03) 9375 4002 Email: [email protected]

A youngster from a Where’s Pedro and Dixie Kong litter. Dixie Kong, a city winner, is a daughter of USA sire, Kiowa Sweet Trey and the brilliant Quidame.

Palm Beach’s annual Super Bowl Predictor Race took place at the popular Florida venue last Friday afternoon. The Royal Racing Team Kennel provided two young chasers that scampered over the course’s 545 yards circuit. Wearing a red vest and representing The New England Patriots was NB’s Ascari, a Lonesome Cry and Angel N The Snow puppy, whilst his littermate, NB’s Falcon will exit the eight alley and have the New York Giants fans rooting for him. The results of these promotional races haven’t done too badly over the years, correctly predicting 11 of the past 15 Super Bowl Sunday winners. I wish picking winners was that simple!

Just how good? PEOPLE are wondering just how good is Miata.

Okay, well she has achieved some-thing that very few greyhounds have done and that is she is a triple track record holder at one venue.

Cannington has been owned by the daughter of Bombastic Shiraz and Win-some Bluebird.

She’s posted 29.81 over the 530 metres, 36.55 over the 642 metres and 41.30 over the 715 metres.

That in itself is just amazing and pos-sibly a first on a metropolitan track any-where in this country, mainly because it’s only been in recent times that we have had three trips where one was middle distance.

She’s also had one go over Man-durah’s 647 metres for a 12¾ lengths win in 36.40.

At the time of writing, the Paul Stuart trained chaser has had four starts over the 715 metres at Cannington for the perfect score, but her winning total in those four victories has been an astonish-ing 38 lengths.

She also unbeaten over the 642 me-tres with a three from three there, whilst 29 lengths is her total winning margin.

Her 530 metres form reads 12 starts for 10 wins, and her aggregate winning margin in those 10 firsts is an unbeliev-able 108¾ lengths.

Besides Cannington and Mandurah, the only other track she’s raced on is Angle Park, where she contested the SA Oaks, winning a heat and semi before being runner-up to Mepunga Nicky in the final.

Many a greyhound has broken track

records without winning a Group race, but Miata is currently engaged in the Group 1 Galaxy, by far her hardest test to date.

By the time this appears, the race will have been run and won.

Even if Miata hasn’t tasted success this time, sooner or later she more than likely will.

Her half-brother, in case anyone didn’t know, is multiple Group winning stayer and 2010 National Distance Champ, Blue Lorian. A real cracker BESIDES MIATA in the $80,000 to the winner Group 1 Galaxy, there were a few other top notch stayers engaged. NSW star, Zipping Lad in the power-ful Jason MacKay camp and star Victo-rian half-miler, Shimaguni, now with ‘Team Dailly’, were also there. We keep speaking of littermates in Group 1 races, and Kalden Mayhem and Kalden Athena both qualified, as too did their half-sister, Kalden Petroni.

Kalden Petroni’s litter sister, Kalden Abubo qualified as the second reserve.

By golly, hasn’t Abbadale Gold been a great producer, and to have four of the final 10 might be as good as it gets.

The first duo are by Big Daddy Cool, whilst the second pair are by Surf Lorian.

Mind you, two other littermates quali-fied for this race and they both came from Keith Harding’s kennel.

Freeway Fame made it into the eight, whilst her litter brother, Freeway Miles was the first reserve.

These two chasers are by Melbourne Cup winner, Surgeon from Dyna Wind. Itza bewdy THIS YEAR’S Perth Cup final certainly was a “bewdy”.

When you looked at the heats, if you had a go at hand-picking the final eight, you might have gone close to nailing it.

Most of the heat winners started fa-vourite with punters, whilst another was right in the market.

Probably the only surprise winner was Autoamerican, but in my view he was probably overs anyway.

Heston Bale and Glen Gallon cer-tainly stood out as chasers that the tough 530 metres would suit ideally, and they got through, whilst another chaser I men-tioned here just recently, Lektra Jay quali-fied as well.

Oaks Road is another in brilliant form, and both he and his brother, Things Missing got through, yet another instance of littermates making a Group 1 Final.

Mepunga Geordie made it seven interstaters in the field, with only Uno Reltub flying the flag for the locals.

This certainly was a top line-up, but then what else would you expect with $140,000 awaiting the winner. The Lord’s son I MENTIONED here a couple of weeks ago about how well the sons of Bombas-tic Shiraz are doing at stud.

Lord Ducal, winner of the 2009 Mel-bourne Cup, is yet another of Bombastic Shiraz’s sons standing at stud.

The Jenny and Jon Roberts owned and trained chaser kick-started his stud career on a bright note when his son, Sir Ducal scored a good win on debut.

Contesting a heat of the VBIS Maiden over 515 metres, the son of Hia-watha came from the widest draw to lead throughout and score in 29.90.

This youngster does look as though he’ll make the grade, so having said that, it looks good for his sire. Good start too ANOTHER former top-class chaser whose stud career has started on a win-ning note is Goodesy. A son of Collision and Frosty Fruits, who posted a brilliant track record time of 28.38 around the Bulli 515 metres, he had his first winner when Kitty Keeping scored at Coonamble over 400 metres. This chaser is a daughter of Taylah Ruth, who showed enough at her debut run to suggest her sire will be a success at stud.

I think the next of the Goodesy’s are around 18 months old, so we should start seeing them making their debuts soon. Group 1 girls THE Group 1 National Futurity final saw yet another pair of littermates in conten-tion for a race at the highest level. By Starlight, a Laurels finalist, and Zara Zulu, both owned by Geoff Collins, made their way through to the final of the $75,000 to the winner event. By Starlight, trained by Mick Fearnley, and Zara Zulu, prepared by Ros Hume, are from a September 2009 litter by Mogambo from Zulu Zepha. Mogambo also got another finalist, Here’s Hayley. Group 1 boys THE GROUP 1 National Derby also at-tracted a very good array of young male sprinters and the final also saw a top notch field qualify.

The most interesting runner was the Syd Swain trained Sure As.

He has a good record to date of 12 wins in 28 starts and went into the $75,000 to the winner puppy race with an impressive hat-trick of wins against his name.

He was trying to beat his litter sister at something, and that is to be the first Group 1 winner in his litter.

He was booked to race on Friday February 3, whilst his sister, Miata’s Group 1 event is February 4.

I think that’d be an amazing double if it comes off, and I would daresay both will have gone around as favourite. Strong affinity STRONG INTENTION has a real affinity for Sandown’s 595 metres trip.

The McKenna Memorial, which was a Group 2 715 metres event, was dropped back to 595 metres and Strong Intention won that race in 2011 in 34.27.

In that race he defeated Mystic Ap-ple, who then got his revenge by defeat-ing Strong Intention in the Group 2 Cran-bourne Cup.

The Maidment Memorial was another Group 2 715 metres race at Sandown, but it is no longer a Group race and it’s also been dropped back to 595 metres.

The 2012 running has just taken place and Strong Intention led throughout to score in 34.58.

Trained by Jamie Ennis for Todd O’Neill, the son of Brett Lee and So Busy has been a great money-spinner for con-nections, having earned $122,750 from 19 wins and 24 placings in 62 career starts.

Earlier days and the black chaser made two Group finals, the Silver Chief and the Queensland Derby, so the up-coming Rookie Rebel looks an ideal race for him to add to his tally. Veteran’s record ONE I missed a few weeks back was the track record at Healesville over 350 me-tres being broken.

It’s not all that often that you see a veteran breaking a record, but Spot On Rob has been racing like a dog half his age and he zoomed along the Don Road straight in a very slick 19.02.

Raced by Margaret and Julie Grindley, Spot On Rob is a son of Flying Scott and Jen Boyd. who’s won 19 of his 69 starts to date, including his past four on the trot, and six of his past seven.

Now his breeding might put a few question marks up, but Jen Boyd is a daughter of Elite State and Gold Sere-nade, and really you don’t need to know much more because that is first rate.

Flying Scott was a real good galloper on the track who posted some really quick times around the countryside, and he had pretty good bloodlines too, being a son of Awesome Assassin and High-land Bride. The three champs - 2 THE SECOND of our three champs is Boronia Blossom, and she has a great story to tell.

After much ado, it was deemed she was a daughter of Wary Suspect and National Queen.

Breeding-wise, it doesn’t get much better than that.

Wary Suspect was a son of Brother Fox and Versatile Miss, and of course Worth Doing’s litter brother.

National Queen was a daughter of Tangairn and Bay Road Queen, and she had won the 1982 Nation Distance Cham-pionship.

Well, if you want to be a National Distance champion, having the right bloodlines isn’t going to do you any harm.

Under the care of Ron Ball, Boronia Blossom got the chance at her first title by having to venture from Queensland to Victoria to compete at Olympic Park in September 1995.

From the pink box she was success-ful by a length and three quarters over the 732 metres trip in the time of 43.72 when rated at 7/1.

In 1996 on her home soil at Albion Park she was defending her crown, and from box one over the 710 metres trip she scored by two lengths in 42.23 when favourite at 5/4.

What you need to remember was that the National Distance Championship was Group 2 then.

Boronia Blossom, during 1996, also won the Group 1 CUB Carlton Cup at Sandown and the Group 1 Gold Cup at Albion Park.

She was, and still is, our only ever dual National Distance champion. Relatively speaking BORONIA BLOSSOM, as you saw, was a daughter of National Queen. National Queen had another daugh-ter, but by Chariot Supreme, and her name is Tenthill Flyer. Tenthill Flyer’s first litter was to Amerigo Man and it produced Flying Amy. Her second litter was to Malawi’s Prince and that gave us Tenthill Doll.

Boronia Blossom was the best stayer racing in 1996, and her cousin, Tenthill Doll was the best sprinter. Tenthill Doll won the Group 1 Golden Easter Egg, the Group 1 Perth Cup and the Group 1 Australian Cup. Of course, the previous year when Boronia Blossom won her first NDC, an-other cousin, Flying Amy was the star sprinter.

In 1995 Flying Amy won the Group 1 Coca-Cola Cup, the Group 1 Eukanuba Cup and the Group 2 Gold Coast Cup. Too late SOMEONE mentioned to me that closing the betting when the green light is switched on is just too late on a dog race. The pools are usually still updating whilst the race is being run was the rea-son given.

The people who leave it until the last minute (more likely second) to place their bets are usually making their decisions based on the size of the pools and the payouts on each dog. Well, perhaps we need a system where there is an amber light that goes on to call the dogs up to the boxes and once the dogs are positioned behind the traps, perhaps the amber light could start to flash to signal that betting has closed. At first I thought that could provide enough time, but then the penny dropped, it doesn’t matter when you close betting, the computers are still going to be finalis-ing AFTER betting has closed, so there’s no way known people can know a final pool and final payout until all bets are in, by which time betting has ceased. Your Say “Chin Wag” asked, “Do you ever go online to talk?” Used to once, but not anymore. Just email me anything you want to bring up. “Ima Newbie” with, “I am looking at sev-eral different sires for my bitch, which one do you think would be the best choice?” All the dogs you have chosen were very fast dogs, but your bitch’s breed-ing and her form suggests she wasn’t overly strong. I would prefer to put a bit of strength in there, rather than speed. However, any of your choices breed-ing compatibility-wise are suitable. “Betting Man” remarked, “Low-end betting looking for high-end results, I don’t like to bet that way… might as well buy a lottery ticket!”

“I think, find your winner, back it ac-cordingly and leave it at that. Set your amount you hope to win and place your bet to win that much.” Yes, my punting system worked ex-actly like that; you could live off it. But plenty of successful punters have betting plans and I’ve found that every one of them requires one very impor-tant thing, the ability to pick a winner. C. Thorley wrote in with, “Little Mother is by Big Daddy Cool and her damsire is a half-brother to Flying Amy.”

“This country does not have a dog of this calibre, and I suggest that the finish-on lure critics are on the wrong train.”

“One of the basics of dog training is to reward, and the “Croweaters” have seen the light.” I think there’s always going to be de-bate on the finish-on lure; some love it, some hate it, plenty don’t care any-more. As for Little Mother, well, her record is very impressive, but I think you’d get an argument from plenty here regard-ing how great she is. I personally think it’s marvellous what she’s done, however, whether she’d have been able to achieve statistics like that racing against the dogs we have here is a matter of opinion. For all we know, she may have “brained” all of them. But what I do know for certain, you can only beat the dogs you’re up against, and you can’t do anymore than win. This week’s Teaser USING the first name of the dam and the last name of the sire to get a racing name is one way of going.

See if you can identify these eight stud dogs, had their owners chosen that formula. 1. Cosmic Lee 2. Texan Shiraz 3. Star Assassin 4. Elusive Prince 5. Cool Token 6. Rumble Lee 7. Charming Prince 8. Tonic for Ken HOLLYWOOD could not have devised a better script than the circumstances surrounding Tough Nut’s first-up Wen-tworth Park win recently.

Trained at Kearsley by Ron Lam-bert, Tough Nut is owned by Sandy and Ken Wells.

Lambert, and the dog’s owners have a long association, as Ken Wells once trained a Lambert owned greyhound called Stash, who won 13 races at Wenty Park.

That was during Lambert’s seven years as Racing Manager at the Macau greyhound racing complex, where he had previously spent six years as a suc-cessful trainer.

But recently Ken Wells has been in poor health, and on the day of the Wenty Park race Lambert got a call to say his old pal had been rushed to hospital after suffering a “bad turn”.

Says Lambert,:”Sandy phoned and said the best tonic for Ken would be for him to see the dog win from his hospital bed.”

“Tough Nut is a desperate railer, so from box eight he had drawn the wrong side of the track, but I told him if he got a clear run he had a chance.”

“When Tough Nut, who has never been a good beginner, was last at the first turn, I despaired.”

“But after threading his way through the field to be third coming to the home bend, he drew away to win.”

“You seldom see a dog win at Wenty after being last at the first turn.”

Lambert, 70, has been a trainer since he was 17 after “putting his age up” to fulfil the minimum 18 years of age licence requirement.

His best greyhound was Combat, a star of the 1991 and 1992 seasons, whilst he owned the mother of Tough Nut’s dam, Hannah Jane.

“Ken trained Hannah Jane and gave her as a brood bitch to Ben McCauley, in return for a puppy from her first litter. And Tough Nut is that pup.”

According to Lambert, greyhound racing in Macau is enjoying a resur-gence.

“When the Hong Kong government banned off-course betting the sport fell on hard times,” Lambert said. “But there are now many starting price bookmakers operating in mainland China and they are betting back via the on-course Macau totalizator.

“And that turnover from China has sparked a boom.” ********** CANBERRA launches a new race for Novice class bitches next month.

The Ruby Oaks over 440 metres on March 4 and 11 is for females having zero to five victories, with metropolitan winners ineligible. ********** MIDNIGHT LACE raced in the shadow of her brilliant sister, Eluthra, but has got off to a flying start as a mother, with her son, Billy The Sid creating a huge im-pression on debut at Gosford on Tues-day, January 31.

The Syd Swain trained puppy led from the first turn to win a 515 metres Maiden in a sensational 29.83.

“Billy The Sid is still very green be-cause he crashed towards the rail at the start; something he hadn’t done in trials,” Swain revealed.”But his time was under two tenths slower than Mark Gatt’s Wen-tworth Park winner, Super Centurion, who took out the main race, and that dog has a big motor.”

Stone rocks the clock Grafton February 2 HE IS the reigning 2010/2011 Grafton Grey-hound Trainer of the Year.

He also holds an unassailable lead in the 2011/2012 Trainer of the Year title after yet another successful day ‘at the office’ for Ettrick resident, Darryl Schafer.

He has now added a track record to the resumé after his smart sprinter, Stone Arch blitzed the current 305 metres time standard in the opening event of the day.

There were some brilliant performances handed in at the Grafton meeting on Thursday afternoon, but none were better than the Bob Burtt owned Stone Arch, which resumed from a three months injury lay-off to post the new time of 17.19 for the short course.

Adding merit to the run was the fact that Stone Arch is better suited over 407 metres and beyond, so to break the previous record by almost two lengths is quite a feat for both greyhound and trainer.

This was to be the start of a great day out for Darryl, who was to maintain the rage throughout the remainder of the program with an additional three winners for the successful kennel, they being Glenayson, Nancy Trick and Moe Trick.

As anticipated, the Brett Nay and Peter Gleeson owned Glenayson was unstoppable in a 13 lengths romp in the 407 metres L J Hooker Real Estate Maiden.

The $1.50 favourite was only moderately into stride but it wasn't long before he had taken the lead, and once in front the race became a procession, as the winning margin clearly indicates.

Glenayson carved out the smart time of 23.12 and should be more than capable of going on to bigger and better things.

Nancy Trick led from start to finish in 23.11 when landing the Phil McLennan Earth-moving Stake, while Moe Trick had to use all of his guile to come from behind and win running away in the Village Green Hotel Stake, clock-ing 23.32.

Scissor Queen is a greyhound which has had plenty of wraps on her since she com-menced racing back in October of 2011.

However, due to a cramping issue in her races, there were some who felt she may have struggled to run further than 407 metres.

But in the Nymboida Coaching Station Stake she dispelled that myth when handling the 480 metres journey with aplomb at her first attempt at that trip.

Beginning with them from box eight, the Dave Irwin trained youngster quickly took up the running in the back straight and was then able to quickly set up a five lengths advantage over her rivals then maintained her advantage all the way to the post.

The time recorded was an impressive 27.26 and she will only get stronger with the benefit of further racing over that distance.

Queensland trainer, George Clegg looks to have a handy greyhound in his possession, based upon the win of Tetsuya in the Jack Demmery Bus Services Stake.

After mixed form at Albion Park in Queen-sland, Tetsuya obviously relished the bigger track here at Grafton after his 23.11 victory.

Showing plenty of tenacity in the run, the son of Collision and Tsunami Surf had to work hard to overcome the early leader, Who's Asner before eventually winning by one and a half lengths, giving Peter Gleeson a double as an owner.

Garry Geary looked to have bright pros-pects of success with One Red Thong and Retro Night, who were backing-up from im-pressive wins the previous week.

And after One Red Thong had to be con-tent with a good second behind Stone Arch, Retro Night came to the fore for the kennel with a good win in the Coutts Crossing General Store 5th Grade over 305 metres.

Only fairly away, Retro Night showed plenty of heart to force a way through and lead on the turn at the surprisingly juicy odds of $7.30 on the NSW TAB. Retro Night ran 17.68 when defeating Bliss Blaster and Tribbiani, making it two wins on end for the likable mentor.

Casino trainer, Bob Cooke is never short of a handy greyhound, and he has a small team currently racing that have shown promise at Casino in recent times.

On Thursday afternoon, Mr. Octane brought that form to Grafton when narrowly taking out the Coutts Crossing Tavern Maiden.

Beginning as good as any, Mr. Octane quickly raced to the lead, and although running very wide on the turn, he had just enough left in the tank to defeat Miss Mindy Trick by a length, with a similar margin to third placed White Thing.

Other winners on the program were Chubby Chappy for Reg Gardoll in the Carters Canine Capers Stake, Three's A Cloud for Gavin Lowe in the Westlawn Finance Mixed, Tahini for Andrew Monaghan in the Clarence Valley Sheds Mixed and Midnight Drinks in the Singhs Bus Services 5th Grade for John Corri-gan. - Grafton Guru

Page 68 – National Greyhound Form, Thursday, February 9th, 2012 NATIONAL GREYHOUND FORM NOW ON SALE WEDNESDAY IN NSW - Distributed by John Fairfax.

RACING around the country has been pretty special in the past week.

We had the Derby and Futurity at The Gardens and then over in WA the Perth Cup and Galaxy.

But there was a common theme, with Sure As winning the Derby and his litter sister, the incomparable Miata, taking out the Galaxy.

They are by Bombastic Shiraz from the former Wentworth Park winner, Winsome Bluebird, who also stayed the 618 metres journey at Richmond.

Winsome Bluebird’s own dam, Winsome Duchess won 13 races and was a very smart city class stayer.

It’s a female line that traces to Mink Mit-ten (fourth dam of Sure As and Miata), a sister to Rapid Supreme and Cindy Lass, both high class Group dogs.

Rapid Supreme is significantly the sire of Spanish City, the third dam of Where’s Pedro, Hallucinate, Crash and Pure Octane.

Dam, Winsome Bluebird had already produced champion stayer, Blue Lorian, who had also won the Group 1 Galaxy during his career.

Let’s go through the pedigrees of Sure As and Miata, Futurity winner, Midnight Capers and of course Eddie Kingswell’s star sprinter, Oaks Road.

SURE AS and MIATA WHAT’S so tough dissecting this mating, you may ask?

They are by the champion race dog and sire, Bombastic Shiraz, out of a city winner, Winsome Bluebird, who had already produced a champion stayer.

That is Sure As and Miata in a nutshell! Last week I made mention of a very fast

recent Sandown winner, State Of Bling and the fact he brought in a strong link between Miss Lemoss and Amber’s Choice, both being from the Riviera Moss/Zulu Moss female fam-ily.

Well, this is yet another pedigree that reinforces this most famous of female families.

If you check out the best progeny of Bombastic Shiraz, you will come across a feature that some of the best carry; Awesome Assassin is in the damline.

Again we have to trace Awesome Assas-

sin’s female line to find the link. His third dam is Mad Midge, a daughter of Riviera Tiger (Temlee - Riviera Moss).

If we trace the tail female line of Bombas-tic Shiraz we find his fifth dam is Zimbabwe (Temlee - Zulu Moss).

Again, Riviera Moss and Zulu Moss are sisters.

The position of Riviera Tiger in Winsome Bluebird and the position of Zimbabwe in Bombastic Shiraz allows both of them to im-pact upon whatever matings they have.

Just how much, no one can be certain. It is just this factor that I believe Bombas-

tic Shiraz, Bond, Elite State bitches and any with Awesome Assassin through a female, will be ideal for matings with recently imported Fear Zafonic.

Fear Zafonic has Double Summit in his female line, and Double Summit (damsire of legend, Top Honcho) is a brother to Versatile Miss (the dam of Worth Doing and Wary Sus-pect).

Double Summit’s dam is none other than Zimbabwe, so you can see what we would be achieving by putting those Bombastic Shiraz, Bond, Elite State, etc. bitches to Fear Zafonic.

Winsome Bluebird has already had mat-ings to History Lesson, Surf Lorian and Where’s Pedro.

The Surf Lorian mating duplicated West Cape in a special position and produced champion, Blue Lorian.

The History Lesson mating brought in Shining Chariot in a very strong position to link with his sister, Centrefire.

The Where’s Pedro mating did neither of these and is not as good as Winsome Blue-bird’s other three matings.

OAKS ROAD EDDIE KINGSWELL is a pretty successful dog man and passionate about breeding.

He owns both Oaks Road and his litter brother, the aptly named Things Missing.

Fortunately for Eddie, Oaks Road has his “tackle” in tact, and he is steadily but surely going about establishing himself as a future stud dog.

The Group 1 Perth Cup added to other Group victories, and he’s been placed and a finalist in a number of other Group races.

He is a son of Spiral Nikita and Lepre-chaun Pace.

Okay, you may ask, where is the pedi-gree pattern that goes to produce a dog as good as Oaks Road.

Being by the Irish dog, Spiral Nikita out of the Paws Of Thunder winner, Leprechaun Pace (a sister to champion, Betty’s Angel), he is a virtual outcross.

What happens when breeders design a total outcross pedigree?

Its success then relies whole and solely on the strength of the female family the brood bitch comes from to achieve.

Few could argue with the fact Lepre-chaun Pace is from one of the best families this country has seen, tracing back to twice NSW Greyhound Of The Year, National Lass.

This is why many breeders using imports to totally outcross their bloodlines come un-stuck.

They do not use brood bitches that are good enough, dominant enough, to impact the most upon the outcross mating.

Imported stud dogs should always have ancestors within their pedigree to strongly link with those bitches they are going to mate.

As I said of Fear Zafonic earlier, Double Summit in his pedigree is perfect for this.

MIDNIGHT CAPERS SCOTT BOARD, I know, is a regular reader of this column. He is a good client of the service we provide.

He will have been jumping for joy when Midnight Capers (Collision-Midnight Movie) won the Futurity.

That’s because Midnight Capers is bred along similar lines to Scott’s home grown superstar. Spring Gun (Bombastic Shiraz - Ready For Rain), winner of the Group 1 Vic Peters and a 29.69 winner at Wentworth Park.

Midnight Capers has as her third dam, Ready To Rise, who just happens to be the second dam of Spring Gun.

Scott’s paddocks are full of this famous female family. He already has plans to put Spring Gun to stud.

Whilst Midnight Capers is by collision and Spring Gun is by Bombastic Shiraz, there is a common and successful theme in both their pedigrees.

It is the duplication of the great Malawi’s Prince.

I cannot get over the influence this great greyhound is having within the pedigrees of today’s greyhound.

Midnight Capers and Spring Gun both are duplicated to Malawi’s Prince.

Midnight Capers in fact has THREE crosses of Malawi’s Prince, two coming in her dam, Midnight Movie.

Significantly one of those crosses comes via a SON, Token Prince.

This will be a key to Spring Gun’s chances at stud. He obviously will be able to mate bitches that carry one more cross of Malawi’s Prince.

Midnight Capers has proved at Group 1 level that it works.

Midnight Movie, dam of the Futurity win-ner, is a sister to Midnight Flare, who in a mating to Where’s Pedro has produced Ritza Ryder, a 29.79 winner around Wentworth Park. - courtesy

Talking Greyhounds WAGGA GREYHOUNDS will run a big TAB program this coming Sunday, February 12 at the Wagga Showgrounds.

The first race is set down for 6.05pm. Racing will feature the Sky Viewers Dash

final and heats of the Rules Club series. It will be another great night out for the

family. Please keep in mind there will be a har-

ness meeting prior to the greyhounds that will finish at 4.45pm.

********** WAGGA raced an entertaining 10-event card last Sunday.

Visiting Yass trainer, Melissa Griffen took training honours with a winning double via the efforts of Crazy Carrie ($1.60) and Cinnamon Sugar ($2.30).

Melissa also qualified Boltless for the Sky Viewers Dash final this Sunday, and with a run on the track, could be the one to beat.

Another stunning performance was that of the Sandra Oakman trained Red Jaffa ($5.20) in the 400 metres Maiden, winning by seven lengths in a very slick 22.94.

Three heats of the Sky Viewers Dash were run, with those winners being Sapphire Flex ($3.10) for Reefton maestro, Marg Ban-nerman, Let ’Em Drop ($1.90) for Oura trainer, Tia Robertson and Teasha’s Bluboy ($9.70) for Wagga’s Laetitia Hand.

This will be a fantastic final on Sunday. Other winners on the night were Tigger-

long Heidi ($13.70) for Wagga conditioner, Mick Finn, Pearls Choice ($1.90) made it a hat-trick of wins for Wagga’s Dave Cox and Young based trainer, Geoff Sheather enjoyed another Wagga winner, Suzie Roxon ($10.80).

Suzie Roxon is proving her liking for the Wagga circuit and the double-figure odds was well over her rightful price.

Perhaps the biggest story of the night was Wagga trainer, Barry Hull’s drought-breaking win with Love Breaker ($6.80).

Hull, a former premiership winning trainer, broke the longest drought in his distinguished training career when notching his first win at Wagga since the club became a full-time TAB track. - Wagga Wrangler

VALE LYN CONNELLY Lyn passed away last Sunday aged 52. She was born and bred in Geelong and was not only well liked at Geelong but respected by those in the dog game. After her partner Rob and grand-daughter Allana her other love was her greyhounds, especially her favourite Rippon. On Sky 2 Paul Hammond paid tribute to Lyn before the last race on Sunday at Sandown Park. In closing may we say Lyn will be sadly missed at Geelong, our deepest sympathy goes to Rob, Allana and all the family. - From all in the greyhound industry
