THE PHONE never stops at our place.

Generally it’s my mate, Bill Warner looking for a chat.

Bill works for Telstra in IT. He’s got plenty of time to chat.

He and wife, Jan breed and race a small team up here in Queensland, and do so with success.

Bill’s a tough man to get off the phone.

But when the phone rang last week it wasn’t Bill (surprise!).

It was a call from NSW, the fa-ther of a young man keen to give greyhound racing a try… we’ll call the father, Greg.

Greg is a greyhound racing nov-ice, whose son has a couple of bitches, and a nice race bitch that was recently in a Group 1 final.

They are keen to go further in greyhound racing.

I found Greg a fascinating per-son. His field is plants and goats.

Okay, so what has this to do with greyhounds and greyhound pedi-grees?

Greg’s son had plonked on his lap a series of articles I had written over the past year or so.

Greg is laid-up at the moment, so he had time to read and study.

His call was to share knowledge, find knowledge.

It seems Greg is a real “wrap” for line breeding.

He says the goat world is domi-nated by some fabulous female fami-lies, most of which started or boast intense line breeding.

His plant business includes sales throughout the world.

He says he was almost wiped out of business when he outcrossed his famous plant line some time ago.

It took him four generations of line breeding those plants to get them back to their best.

Greg and I had a very interesting chat for more than an hour about such things.

So what has all this to do with greyhounds, I hear you asking again.

Well, when I was going through the pedigrees of this week’s city winners I came across a dog called Mr. Meana (Collision - Token Whiz), who Mark Gatt trains in Syd-ney, and who won a graded race over 520 metres at Wentworth Park last Saturday night.

He is so intensely line bred that even I find it difficult to imagine the pedigree was put together like that.

I suggest anyone who likes to delve into such things should quickly

call up Greyhound Data and have a look at what goes into producing Mr, Meana and his very successful litter-mates.

Mr. Meana is line bred 3x3 to both Light Of Fire and Malawi’s Prince, both coming through a son and daughter on both sides of the pedigree.

It is as strong a mating as I have seen.

Through the middle of the pedi-gree is the cross of Rumble Spirit (dam of Collision) and Token Prince (sire of Token Whiz).

Take a close look at both Rum-ble Spirit and Token Prince. Both are by Malawi’s Prince.

Rumble Spirit is out of a daugh-ter of Brother Fox, whilst Token Prince is out of a daughter of Amerigo Man (a son of Brother Fox).

Thus, Rumble Spirit and Token Prince are an ideal “balance” for each other.

I suggest that this balancing ef-fect of Rumble Spirit with Token Prince has more to do with Mr. Meana and his brothers and sisters being able to gallop than anything else.

The litter also includes Have A Yap (a Group performer in NZ) and Lavana (a multiple Wentworth Park winner and up to distance).

Mr. Meana’s dam, Token Whiz was a better than handy race bitch and has become an outstanding pro-ducer.

From her litter to Bombastic Shiraz she produced Dark Duo, an outstanding race dog in Victoria and South Australia, and who also boasts an intensely line bred pedigree.

His make-up shows a 3x3 dupli-cation and sex balance to Malawi’s Prince, but more importantly a 4x4 link between Shining Chariot and his sister, Centrefire.

But what is most interesting about all this is that Token Whiz has been mated to champion sire, Where’s Pedro and the US stud suc-cess, Kiowa Sweet Trey.

Neither carried the intensity of line breeding that her matings to Bombastic Shiraz and Collision did.

And neither was anywhere near as successful.

They won races, but nothing like the city class or Group performers that the intensely line bred matings produced.

Why is this so? Every now and then I get the

privilege to discuss pedigrees with one of the world’s foremost thor-oughbred pedigree experts.

He has always advised me that success comes mostly from reinforc-ing common and DOMINANT an-

cestors within a pedigree. Of course there are exceptions to

every rule. But he says by reducing the gene

pool within a pedigree by reinforcing the best and most dominant ances-tors, it is often a recipe for success.

The trick is to identify the best and most dominant ancestors.

Getting them in the RIGHT posi-tion within that pedigree is often difficult.

Some bitches just cannot be mated to achieve this, whilst some bitches don’t have the quality them-selves to be able to produce quality.

Token Whiz certainly did. She is bred identically to the

former star race bitch, Pure Burst (Token Prince - Hotburst), winner of the Laurels and Brisbane Cup.

Tragically, Pure Burst died be-fore she could be bred with.

What a tragedy. Token Whiz’s second dam,

Grove Whiz (Grove Whisper - Gee Whiz) is a litter sister to Nicole Cruise, the third dam of Pure Burst.

If this column smacks of “anti” outcross… that is far from what I am trying to show.

There is so much US and UK blood in Australia today that blood-lines are quickly becoming world-wide, exactly as they already are in the thoroughbred world.

Those shuttle stallions truly opened up the world for thor-oughbreds.

Frozen semen has done exactly the same.

There are many, many stud dogs in Australia today, including a num-ber of the high quality imports, whose pedigrees have incredibly close links to Aussie lines.

It had to happen. AND THAT brings me, finally, to Australia’s 2011 Greyhound Of The Year Dyna Tron (Collision - Gold Rush Bale).

I had the good fortune to sit with Paul and Jan Wheeler last Friday night when the award for top dog in Australia in 2011 was made.

Dyna Tron still has a great career ahead of him on the racetrack.

But when he goes to stud he will certainly get his chance to succeed.

He has a pedigree I particularly like for a potential stud dog.

His sire, Collision is intensely line bred to the half-brothers Acacia Park and Brother Fox.

Dyna Tron’s dam brings in an-other cross of Acacia Park through a daughter.

He is a reinforcement of the fac-tor I believe made Collision a great stud success.
