Tai Chi: A Natural Change

The graceful movements of Tai Chi come from observing nature - leaves falling from a tree, birds gliding on the breeze or water flowing around boulders in a mountain stream.

Originally developed as a form of self defence, Tai Chi is now predominantly practised for its many health benefits. These are extensive and have been shown in numerous studies, and include reduced blood pressure, increased circulation, reduction in symptoms of arthritis, improved sleep patterns, improved health for patients with diabetes and a stronger immune system.

Tai Chi is a series of slow controlled graceful movements which bring a feeling of peace, relaxation and tranquillity. The movements develop strength, balance, posture, reduce stress and instil a feeling of calm.

Will you be thriving or surviving this year?

Lacking Self Belief…?

Worn down with other problems or issues…? Sometimes problems come and go. If we have strong personal foundations, and are resourced enough, we are more likely to move on quickly. If we are lacking

self-esteem or, we are dogged by unhappy experiences and limiting beliefs - perhaps from childhood experiences - we may not thrive so easily.

John Palmer is a wills and probate executive at QualitySolicitors Yates & Co

will have peace of mind in knowing that these tasks will be undertaken by someone of your choosing.

If you do not have a Lasting Power of Attorney in place and later become mentally incapacitated, your husband, wife, children or other relatives may face long delays and considerable expense in applying to the Court of Protection to get access and take control of your finances.

Local firm QualitySolicitors Yates & Co have introduced a scheme to encourage local people to plan ahead by considering setting up a Lasting Power of Attorney.

Concerned by the general lack of awareness of this issue, we have put together a very special offer to help people with the documents and the complete registration process.

Present this advert to claim a full £50* discount against our usual costs.

Lasting Power of Attorney is not just for the elderly. We know that we should write a will, but few people are aware that they should also consider a Lasting Power of Attorney.

People sometimes take it for granted that they will be able to look after their own every day affairs and make decisions for themselves. Sadly the ability to do this often decreases as we grow older.

This could be for a number of reasons such as an accident, physical illness or the onset of a mental illness; all of which could result in you having difficulties in managing your day to day affairs. Lasting Powers of Attorney are designed to be recognised by banks, financial institutions, care homes and local authorities as well as tax and pensions authorities.

Although this is something that we do not like to think about, these difficulties can be overcome by the preparation of one document, a Lasting Power of Attorney. It is a serious and powerful document about which you will want straightforward and down to earth legal advice.

A Lasting Power of Attorney gives someone you trust, usually a relative or friend, the power and legal authority to act on your behalf in the event that you aren’t able to do so for yourself. There are safeguards to make sure your wishes are carried out and you

QualitySolicitors Yates & Co is authorised and regulated by the Solicitors Regulation Authority, no. 56526.*(not available in conjunction with any other offers)

Thousands of visitors, from those ‘just down the road’, to foreign tourists, perhaps holidaying in the UK, enjoy our county shows – very much so. With hundreds of trade stands, a county show is a fantastic day out. The Nottinghamshire County Show is held at Newark Showground, with show jumping, horse competitions, livestock, events for dogs, plus other animals and pets. The magnificent Grand Parade shows off the prize-winning animals from the dairy and beef cattle, plus the sheep classes. The dog agility is always great fun. The superb displays of flowers and plants will interest many, too. Some of the attractions and displays vary each year, so visiting the website will give all the information required and make planning a great day out, most worthwhile. This year’s event is Saturday 10 and Sunday 11 May, 2014. www.newarkshowground.com

The Lincolnshire County Show is held at the Lincolnshire Showground. This splendid event

provides a fun-filled, action-packed day out for all the family. Spread over two days, the show attracts many thousands of visitors, each time. This venue has a purpose-built events' centre, with interlinked exhibition halls, meeting rooms and suites, all having the very latest technology. This year's event is Wednesday 18 and Thursday 19 June, 2014. www.lincolnshireshow.co.uk

The Derbyshire County Show is held at Elvaston Showground. A great number of events involve horses and all types of cattle, plus other animals. The Most Elegantly Turned Out Horse and Carriage, and the Ladies’ Hunter Side Saddle events are really wonderful sights to see. The vintage tractors, cars, engines and motorcycles, hold much interest. With dog shows attracting a lot of interest too, plus other animals and the feathered section, there really is something for everyone. This year’s event is Sunday 22 June, 2014. www.derbyshirecountyshow.org.uk

Spring has arrived! It’s a time for renewal, new starts and maybe even turning over a new leaf.

In Sherwood we have a thriving community and I’m hoping the change in season might bring about a change in some of our residents.

You told us that you wanted improvements in the area to tackle problems such as dog fouling, parking, cycling on the pavement, and environmental issues with domestic bins and also fly-tipping.

All of these issues have a negative impact on communities. Irresponsible dog walkers who leave mess behind are creating potential health hazards for others, as is fly tipping and not properly disposing of domestic waste. It doesn’t look very nice either.

We can help but it is important that people take responsibility for their part in maintaining the area they live in and treating it with respect. Maybe this is the time to turn over that new leaf.

In the meantime, we listened to your concerns and in response launched a multi agency week of action with Nottingham City Council from 7 to 14 March in which we tackled some of the issues which can blight neighbourhoods.

We particularly focussed on being visible in the community and getting out to speak to the public. Several operations ran to target a variety of issues including speeding, drug offenders, retail

crime, licensing compliance checks and giving crime prevention advice.

Community Protection officers worked with us and also targeted dog fouling and environmental crime.

I look forward to bringing you news of the outcome in my next column.

In the wider area we also took action on burglaries and domestic violence, however, these are issues that are always high on the agenda across the force and we work hard to raise awareness within the force and with the public.

We have also been working on crime prevention initiatives such as pet micro-chipping, neighbourhood surveys and neighbourhood alert registrations.

Please feel free to contact us if you would like any information on how to help prevent anti-social behaviour and crime by visiting any of our public surgeries, advertised on the Notts Police website, or by e-mailing the beat team at [email protected], or by dropping in to the Contact Point on Saturday mornings between 10am and 12pm where there will be a Neighbourhood Watch representative to speak to.

Gedling Borough Council is asking for pet food donations to support a project that provides a foster home for pets from families who are affected by domestic violence.

The ‘Pets Project’ run by Women’s Aid Integrated Services (WAIS) helps women and their children who need to leave abusive relationships but are scared to leave pets behind with an abusive partner. Most refuges and hostels are unable to house animals, but the WAIS team can organise for a carer to foster pets and re-unite them with the owner once they are ready. The owner is required to pay for the pet food and the council are asking for customers and staff to give pet food donations to help ease the burden on the families.

People can donate food at the council offices in Arnot Hill Park, Arnold and all donations will then be passed onto WAIS who will allocate the food to the foster homes.

For more information people can contact Sarah at Women’s Aid Integrated Services on 07971 337 264 or email [email protected] or visit www.wais.org.uk

Help Angel find her way to her new home

Readers may recall last year a homeless, blind cat called Angel. The good news was that Angel was rehomed - but sadly owing to her owner’s circumstances, she has since returned to the local charity which helped her.

Whilst change is challenging for any animal, imagine being blind and facing this u p h e a v a l ? Volunteers at Animal

Accident Rescue Unit are keen to get Angel a permanent home, as one explains: ‘Angel lives in a world of darkness and her life’s been turned upside down. But, like many blind cats, it’s astonishing how well she copes - and most importantly enjoys life.’

Blindness aside, the volunteers agree there is so much more to Angel! A beautiful dark ‘tortie’ with ‘an adorable nature’, she loves company and is suited to a home without pets or small children. Whilst adopting a blind cat may seem challenging, volunteers experienced with blind cats, agree: ‘Angel will soon learn her new home; all she wants is a lovely indoor home to enjoy a settled life.’

Blind cats use their whiskers and heightened senses to navigate with surprising ease. The experienced volunteers provide practical advice on blind cat care, whilst confirming care is easier than expected.

For the chance to adopt fabulous Angel call 0115-9984307; this number is only regarding Angel. Leave your contact details and postcode or email [email protected]. For emergencies and other matters, use 0115-9321555, or the email.

Meanwhile, the charity urgently needs more cat fosterers to help those it continues to help – like Angel.

It’s a Wrap!At around £1 for a pack of 8, wraps are a regular on my shopping list. As well as an alternative to bread for pack-ups they can be used for some delicious hot family meals and snacks. Here are some of my kids favourites...

Chorizo & Cheese Quesadillas4 large flour tortilla wraps2 tbsp olive oilFor the filling2 tbsp tomato ketchup150g grated red leicester cheese16 slices chorizoMethodSpread the ketchup over two of the wraps, place 8 slices of chorizo on top and cover both wraps with cheese, then place the other wrap on top so you have two large round sandwiches. Heat 1 tbsp oil in a large non stick frying pan, when hot, add one of the quesadillas. Fry for a couple of minutes til golden, using a fish slice flip and fry for a couple of mins on the other side. Add the other tbsp oil and repeat with the other quesadilla. Remove, slice and enjoy!

SamosasMaking samosas out of flour tortillas couldn’t be easier. The 7” size works best. A pack of 10 wraps will make 20 samosas. Before you start, make some glue out of 1tbsp flour mixed with 2tbsp water. Use this to stick the edges down. When you are ready warm the wraps up for 10 secs in the microwave (2 at a time is fine). When pliable - cut each in half. Using your finger put some glue down the flat side and wrap into a cone shape. Press the seam to make sure they are stuck. Spoon in your favourite filling leaving enough room at the top to seal with the glue. Now you can brush with oil and bake on a tray in the oven (200˚C) for 10 mins. Or you can shallow fry for a couple of minutes each side until golden brown. There are loads of different fillings you could use: traditional spicy potato and pea, beans and cheese, spicy rice and mince, even chocolate buttons and sliced banana!!

For the topping150g cheddar - grated2 tbsp sour cream (optional)MethodHeat oven to 180°C. Grease a square oven proof dish. Make the filling first. Heat the oil in a large pan, cook chicken, remove with slotted spoon & place to one side. Fry peppers, onion, garlic & chillies until just cooked (add more oil if necessary). Put chicken back into the pan and season to taste. Now make the sauce. Add all ingredients to a small saucepan and heat gently for 10 mins. Check seasoning and adjust accordingly. Now to put it all together...add 3 tbsp of sauce to the chilli chicken mix, spread 2 tbsp of sauce on the bottom of the dish. Warm the tortillas up to make them easier to handle. Split the filling between the 4 wraps. Place the filling in the middle of the wrap, sprinke a bit of cheese on, tuck the sides in and roll up. Place the four wraps in the oven proof dish. Use the rest of the sauce to cover the wraps, dot the sour cream over and sprinkle with the cheese. Bake for 20 mins until golden and sizzling.

Work has begun on the £1 million Gedling Country Park on the site of the former 300 acre Gedling Colliery site.

Contractors North Midland Construction will begin work next week starting with remedial work to make the site safe for entry for members of the public. This is the first in a number of phases of works taking place in the park. Phase two is expected to commence in May 2014 which will be the installation of the access road and car park and then followed by the installation of the children’s play area in August.

The park is expected to be open to the public in the autumn.

Leader of the Council, Councillor John Clarke (pictured above right with Deputy Leader Michael Payne) said;

“I’m pleased that after 20 years we’re finally in a position to transform the last of the colliery sites in Nottinghamshire into a country park that all the residents in the borough, county and city can use and enjoy. We are delighted that the first phase of works has begun.”

For more information and ongoing updates on the Country Park people can visit www.gedling.gov.uk/gedlingcountrypark

Business Spotlight....

B & P PavingName of business: B & P Paving

Your Names: Nick Bealing (pictured right) and Chris Pemberton (pictured left)

How did you first get into your line of work? After leaving school in 2000, I found work at a very well established and respected company learning every aspect of block paving with my business partner Chris. Chris then went into surveying and I got qualified in brick laying before we started our own company, B&P Paving.

How did you get to where you are now? Through hard work, perseverance, and by combining our experience and skills. We believe through this combination we have become one of the most skilled teams in Nottingham offering a quality product at a competitive price. There’s too many out of work builders and jobbers in the industry at the minute, that’s why we specialise only in block paving, patios, fencing and garden brickwork to insure quality in our work.

What are your plans for the next two years? To grow our business. We’ve won awards for our work in Nottingham and we believe that by combining our quality of work with great prices we can continue to expand the business as it has been doing for the last 6 years. We rely on recommendation above all else so happy customers is the only way this is going to happen

How have you found advertising in ng magazines? NG magazines has been a great out let for our company to advertise. People like to know that the companies they use are local and can be trusted. People need to stay away from door knockers and jobbing builders and use great trusted local companies, as supporting local business is what’s going to keep prices down and the market fair.

What did you want to be when you were growing up and would you still like to be that now? I don’t think I knew what I wanted to be when I was at school, but I’m more than happy with what I do now. I think I always knew I’d like to be self-employed from an early age though.

What three things would you like to do if you had the time and money? Travel, spend more time with my family and I suppose a couple of weeks a year in the sun wouldn’t hurt !

Cadets give it their all at Wing Cross CountryRecently 24 cadets form 2418 Sherwood Squadron competed in the wing cross country competition at RAF Wittering. First off was the junior boys with CDT Hudon, Domleo and Saunders, racing to the front. Followed by the junior girls then senior boys with cadet Scott making it into the regional cross country team. Last but not least the junior women and junior men to set off, Cpl Knighton also making it into the regional team.

The squadron got some great results, with the junior boys class securing 11th place overall, senior boys coming 2nd, and junior men coming 17th. Whilst the junior girls achieved 4th place and junior women 7th place. Overall the squadron came 6th place in the wing. All the cadets put in 100% effort and the squadron were very proud of their results.

Cadets Fundraise with RAFA CDT Ashton and four cadets from 2418 Sherwood Sqn were chosen to take part in the Royal Air Force Association (RAFA) fundraiser. The fundraising included collections in supermarkets as well as selling RAFA branded items to raising money. This money is going towards causes such as helping members of the armed forces to stay in contact with family and friends whilst they are away from home.

CDT Ashton was awarded at the presentation evening in February for raising the most money for the association in the squadron and said; “This meant a lot to me and I cannot wait until next year to help the association raise money for those that need it.”

Asda Hyson Green Bag PackOn Saturday the 8th of February, 15 cadets from 2418 Sherwood squadron joined teams with Asda to help raise money for the British Heart Foundation.

From bag packing, raffles, tombola and selling balloons, we all participated to play our part for the community regarding raising money for a good cause. All in all we raised £527.67. At the end of the day we received a pack lunch for a hard day’s work, but it was very much worth it and we all thoroughly enjoyed it.

Remembering Eric….

William Eric Woodward

With the centenary of the First World War approaching one way we can contribute is to take a closer look at our war memorials and ask ourselves who were the men behind the names?

I chose a name at random from one Nottingham war memorial and set out to find out something about the life behind the name - William Eric Woodward.

Through researching the census records, I traced his nephew living in Derby. War records, Scouting and other archives gave me a wealth of information allowing me to piece together much of Eric’s short life. Born in 1899, William lived on Gawthorne Street, New Basford. His father, a house decorator, died in 1908 and his mother

took up this occupation to support Eric and his younger sister Agnes. Eric was a keen scout, joining the 1st Caledonian troop in 1909. The troop met at Blackwood camp close to the newly built Nottingham prison. A Memorial Gateway still marks the entrance to Blackwood commemorating all Scouts who died in the First World War. Eric’s sister, Agnes, later became Akela of the scout troop.

Corporal William Eric Woodward, Durham Light Infantry died on the 29th June 1919 in Leicester Military hospital and is buried in Basford cemetery. He is one of 15 names commemorated on the memorial windows at St Andrews with Castle Gate Church in Nottingham. The charity War Memorials Online (www.warmemorialsonline.org.uk) seeks photographs and details of all memorials to assist them in compiling a lasting tribute to all those who made the ultimate sacrifice. Perhaps you can assist this project or uncover some details of the lives behind the names on your local war memorial?

Work experience is a vital part of any teenager’s curriculum as it opens up the world of work to students and prepares them for the job market, a message that NORSACA, the largest specialist autism charity in the East Midlands, is keen to promote.NORSACA provides a specialist day school (Sutherland House), based in Sherwood, and aims to place each of its 52 Key Stage 4 and 5 students (age 14-19) for a half day per week with a Nottinghamshire business. But they need more businesses to offer their time and experience to students.Red Earth Organics is one small business currently offering placements. Phillip Kadner, owner of the company, comments, “I currently have four students with two of their teaching assistants doing regular work experience at Red Earth. The students are enthusiastic and always ready to get stuck in. “I felt compelled to make a contribution back to society, and giving students a window into the world of work is a great way to do that. To any business owner considering taking on students with autism for work experience, I’d say ‘do it’ as it is a rewarding and enriching experience for both you and them.”Sutherland House School caters for up to 94 children with autism between the ages of 3 and 19, and provides each of its students with their own individual learning pathway which, for the older students, noticeably consists of more than the average two week placement most high school students will undertake.

It’s well documented that when residents take an active interest in their community, crime rates fall. As a community group we believe that crime prevention measures are vital, but equally important are thriving community groups. With this in mind, we are keen to give one such group our whole-hearted support. We’re talking, of course, about Sherwood Art Week. This year’s event takes place between Sat 21st and Sun 29th June.

Many people are already actively on board and making a contribution to the organisation of the event. All of us can pitch in though, even if we don’t have time to be fully involved in the organisation. Keen gardeners could think about sprucing up front gardens or putting out floral displays in time for the event. Local business

people could think about sponsoring Sherwood Art Week and offering their premises to display some of the art work.

There are so many ways to get involved, from stewarding at the Craft Fair to knitting colourful items to adorn bus stops, trees and lamp posts! Offer to run a creative workshop or help distribute the publicity. To see photos from last year and find out how SAW 2014 is shaping up, go to www.sherwoodartweek.co.uk.

A new pond dipping platform, as a part of Attenborough Nature Centre’s 50th anniversary celebrations, has been purchased and installed in time to allow the bird nesting season to begin without disturbance.

The Rotary clubs of Wollaton Park and Sherwood Sunrisers joined forces on a pilot Business Partnership project and in co-operation with the Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust, who kindly agreed to release employees drawn from their Services Division to undertake the project. Nottinghamshire Social Services provided additional help giving young special needs people an opportunity to get involved in community work.

The Nottinghamshire Wildlife Trust oversaw the removal of an old wooden platform and the installation of a new plastic one. The pond dipping platform is an educational facility that is used by many local schoolchildren and youth groups learning about the wildlife living in the water.

Rotary is for communitiesMany members say they join Rotary because it gives them a chance to give something back to their community. In local communities alone, each club raises tens of thousands of pounds for community projects and local charities, often more. Members also volunteer their time - supervising and organising community events, running projects to promote the achievements of young people and coordinating educational programmes. If you want to know how you can join Rotary contact David on 01158751484.

Attenborough Nature Centre benefits from Business Partnership

initiative A Nottingham subscription library is opening up its private walled garden to the public on Saturday 24th May to support Alzheimer’s Society during Dementia Awareness Week.

The Bromley House Library Open Garden Event will take place on Saturday 24th May from 1pm- 4pm. Entrance is £2 per person. Cake and refreshments will be available as well as a raffle and dementia information stand.

The Library, which was founded in 1816 and is home to over 40,000 books, is situated in the centre of Nottingham in a Grade II* listed Georgian town house and is home to one of the few remaining city centre walled gardens.

Danielle Hindle, Community Fundraiser for Alzheimer's Society in the East Midlands said: “It’s fantastic that Bromley House Library is opening up the private garden to help raise vital awareness and funds to support Alzheimer’s Society. It’s a wonderful venue and will be a great afternoon out for the whole family. It is local organisations like them that enable us to support more people living with dementia and their families and carers. We greatly appreciate their support and generosity.”
