80 million years ago wonderful island Gondwana was separated from Rangitata Land, evolving over time to become modern New Zealand.

Polynesians discover and settle NZ, between 950 and 1130 AD.

Then Maori people settled, possibly around the same time in the coastal region of New Zealand. They were the group of tribal who brought many animals and began to settle and they were famous for wood carving. Often these people used to have fights.

In 1642 an European explorers, Abel Janszoon Tasman from Holland, sails into New Zealand waters.

The first encounter between Māori and European was violent, leading to bloodshed. After partly charting the coastline, Tasman leaves New Zealand without ever having had the occasion to set foot ashore.

It has a rich and fascinating history, reflecting both our Maori and European heritage. Amazing Maori historic sites and treasures
