Newtown & Chilwell Cricket Club – Celebrating 105 years TWO BLUE TRIBUNE The official organ of the Newtown and Chilwell Cricket Club since 1973. March 9, 2016 Vol. 43 No 13 www.two-blues.com.au Thirds and juniors March on The Thirds and three junior sides have pushed their seasons deeper into March after the first round of finals last weekend. Mitchell’s Marauders, Battler’s Boys or Biscuit’s Beauties, call them what you like, they certainly took the biscuit against South Barwon with both bat and ball. The Under 15 Royce boys produced a whole of team effort to beat a tigerish Torquay at Drew Oval while in the Under 13s, both the Crane and Merriman teams had excellent wins. The Thirds made a great start against the Swans, openers Jordie Lewis and Adrian Windt cashing in on a couple of dropped catches before a middle order collapse which required a righting of the ship from the Mitchells x2. While Sammie produced the strokes, Russell did an impression of a barnacle before eventually producing a few attractive shots his own, in between grabbing his fragile hamstrings. Oscar Hill did some fine whacking at the finish as Grant Whiteside proved that W.G. Grace was not the only bloke who could play the draw shot on purpose and voile … 226. It proved more than enough as Dev Royce got a quick three wickets and Jack Royce snared a run out to reduce South Barwon to 4-49 before Jordie, pushing uphill into the wind, had the ball curling away nicely. His four-for might have been a Michelle but for a close stumping decision that went in favour of batsman. Despite missing the glory of that moment, Stinker was in superb form behind the stumps; in fact all the fielders behind the stumps were grabbing opportunities as they came – Windtie got three, and Dev held a pearler off Hayden Jefferies as he removed the Swans’ best batter. As anyone monitoring the app would know, the Under 15s semi-final was a tussle to the end. Day one, the fall of Oscar Hill and Liam Blackford’s wickets sparked a collapse that required a diligent partnership from big Jonty Lawson and Luke Rundle to take the score to a defendable 126. Defendable yes, but only if every opportunity for a wicket was taken. The most notable doing of that was Liam Blackford’s brilliant run out, plus some blistering bowling at the finish from Jonty and Oscar after the spinners Tom Thiele and Jack Royce had held their nerve, and in Tom’s case, a neat caught and bowled. Angus Chapman top-scored for Under 13 Crane as they successfully chased down South Barwon Gold’s 8-127 for the loss of just three wickets at Elderslie. And Under 13 Merriman were very merry young men after an arrow-like throw from another Angus (must have been name of the year a decade or so ago) Hastie ended Anglesea’s run chase 72 runs short. There were two other games last weekend, the last home and away appearances for both the Sixths and the Eighths, the former given the luxury of playing on turf at Zampatti Oval, and relishing it. Specs and Mules got unbeaten half centuries as Newtown romped home. The Eights, one of the success stories of the year in terms of bringing new talent to the club, and keeping older talent, had their moments in their game against top-of-the-table East Belmont, Croftie getting an unbeaten half century while happily conceding that the shot of the day had been played by Patrick Silo, a handsome square drive that not just Croftie, but Steve Smith would have been happy to call his own. And so for those still participating in autumnal March, the end of the season gets even pointier: grand finals for the juniors, a prelim for the Thirds. If any extra encouragement is needed, it might be the words of Leigh Matthews when the Brisbane Lions were eliminated in an AFL preliminary final: “It’s a long way back to here!” Finals venues: • 3rds vs Murgheboluc as Grovedale Secondary College • u15 Royce vs Geelong City at Grovedale Secondary College • u13 Crane vs Geelong City Hemley at Reserve Road, Grovedale • u13 Merriman vs Murgheboluc Gold at McDonald Reserve 2 2015/16 Social Calendar Friday March 18 th Season Review See page 2.
