APPLICATION NOTE
SCADA
The ability to remotely monitor, control and
report on the results o distributed assets is key
to achieving maximum operational efciency.
The abundance o measuring and control points
requires an efcient delivery system to balance
network cost versus operational requirements.Beyond supporting traditional SCADA
applications, the industry is looking or ways to
receive real-time visuals rom their remote sites.
By oering an extremely cost eective terminal
as part o a scalable network solution, value
can be provided or operational managers in the
felds o earthquake monitoring acilities, oil and
gas inrastructure, utilities, transport, energy
distribution and environmental monitoring
anywhere in the world. The advent o largescale renewable energy acilities like windmill
parks in inhospitable areas can beneft rom a
SCADA network to optimize efciency o energy
generation and transportation.

Newtecs Sat3Play provides the means to establish an
always-on two-way IP connectivity between a Remote
Terminal Unit (RTU) and the Internet or a private network,
thereore remaining completely independent rom existing
terrestrial networks.
The basic IP connectivity is extended with Quality o Service
(QoS) in orward and return allowing the deployment o real
time services.
The system consists o a gateway that can support up to
50,000 remote terminals with a variety o service levels. Thegateway contains management unctionalities to monitor,
confgure and control remote sites in large geographical
areas. Individual service confgurations can be confgured
to meet specifc requirements o a remote site.
To make satellite an attractive alternative or SCADA the
Sat3Play terminal implements the most bandwidth
efcient technologies, such as DVB-S2 ACM orward
link, 4CPM adaptive return link and embedded IP trafc
enhancement sotware.

Security
Confdentiality o exchanged inormation is guaranteed.
Data can be directly communicated to the RTU using a
single satellite hop. The communication end-points are
authenticated which increases the security o the SCADA
network.
Since the encryption is ully integrated in the system, it can
be combined with trafc acceleration and compression
resulting in real time network behaviour comparable to
traditional delivery networks.
High availability at minimum cost
Newtecs simple, yet very efcient implementation oACM (Adaptive Coding and Modulation), doubles satellite
throughput and customer satisaction by providing 100 per
cent link availability.
ACM technology is incorporated into the DVB-S2 standard,
providing signifcant increases in bandwidth efciency
or satellite applications and allowing modifcation o
modulation parameters o a satellite signal during
almost any orm o intererence, without interrupting the
transmission or losing data.
Since statistically rain ades are short and happen quiterarely over time, higher modulation parameters can be
used most o the time. However, when SCADA requires a
fxed transmission rate or a permanent high availability, the
ACM technology assures that the ade only aects one o
the services. This mechanism gives the platorm extremely
high availability at no additional space segment cost.
Depending on the instant need at a certain location the
required capacity can be variant. The Sat3Play system is
capable o dynamically allocating capacity over the dierent
remote sites.

The gateway provides redundancy on all layers (user,
control, management) and equipment. It has redundant
RF signal and mains supply inputs. The redundancy isconceived as two ully redundant chains. When there
is a ailure an automatic switch over to the other chain
is perormed. Even during service windows there is
limited downtime since upgrades can be perormed
on one o the chains with the other chain active in a
previous version. A ailure in the ront-end is resolved by
switching to the alternative RF input.
Network Scaling
The Sat3Play network supports services ranging
rom data only to voice and video. For many SCADA
applications adding video will provide extra inormation
when abnormal events are detected. Integrating Video
Trafc in the SCADA network will improve operation
efciency by providing greater insight into events and
thus diminishing the potential or damage caused by
emergency events.

The Sat3Play system can have the
highest amount o terminals active
with real-time response behaviour.
This system eature enables users to
deploy large amounts o terminals ona minimal gateway estate.
The modular and scalable gateway
allows users to start with a small
scale installation, expanding it by
means o a sotware license and
gradually adding additional modules
as the network grows or applications
are added. The unique pay as you
grow principle matches the inherent
changes in size or capacity o the
network with a exible investment
model.
Versatile Service Guarantees
The Sat3Play system provides 3
classes o services: best-eort, high-
priority and real-time. Each o those
trafc classes has specifc transportation and shaping
characteristics. The real-time trafc class assures that
delay and jitter perormance are controlled even in ading
and congested conditions.
In a typical SCADA scenario the high priority class
would be used or the monitoring and control trafc.

The real-time class would carry the video trafc that
was triggered by an alarm or an operator request. It is
guaranteed that this trafc would not interere with critical
SCADA trafc. The real-time class can also be used or
local technician service calls. The best eort class is thenused or carrying on-site internet or intranet access.
Fast deployment
Sat3Play can be operated as a single service provider
platorm or a multi-service provider platorm. The latter gives
the opportunity to start a service without investing into a ull
system.
The installation o the terminal can be done without any
specifc training. This means a correct and ast installation
can be perormed by a local technician o the remote site
with no need or special equipment. The local technician is
guided to perorm the correct antenna pointing by the Point
& Play tool. The terminal comes pre-confgured so no
on-site administration is required, resulting in ast and riskree deployment.

Low power consumption
The terminal only consumes 20W typical and the DC
power supply fts alternative power sources like solar
cells.
The low power consumption o the terminal fnds
its origin in the interactive LNB. It has a simple up-
conversion architecture and uses saturated power
amplifcation without any perormance penalty.
