vouchers Thank you to everyone who brought in dockets and vouchers
for the Coles and Woolworths promotions over the last few months.
We cashed in our 15 673 Woolworths points this week and purchased
two sets of NXT robots to add to our robotics collection and a set
of goggles for use in our exciting science classes. The wonderful
‘Coles counters’ in 3T are finalising the
Coles vouchers and looking at the catalogue to see what they can
buy with the thousands of Coles points. At the moment, sets of
walkie-talkies are a popular choice!!! Stop work called for

Twilight Fair on tomorrow Finally, best of luck for all at our
Twilight Fair on tomorrow afternoon, starting at 5pm! The Fair
Committee is to be warmly praised for the hard work and dedication
displayed over many months of planning. We didn’t have a fair in
2010 due to the BER building works and lack of transport access to
the school and the closed driveway. Therefore, the 2011 fair
promises to be exciting for all. Enjoy!
(The canteen will be closed on Friday due to preparations for
the Twilight Fair.)
Anaphylaxis training at NNPS All school staff attended an
anaphylaxis training session after school on Tuesday afternoon this
week. The session was run by the anaphylaxis nurse educator from
Westmead Hospital, Mrs Briony Tyquin. It is a DEC requirement that
staff attend an anaphylaxis training update session every two
years. We were also pleased to welcome several colleagues from
nearby PCS schools who had missed the training at their own
schools. Briony pointed out how important it was that the school
holds current up-to-date action plans for all of our students
diagnosed with anaphylaxis. These plans must be signed by a doctor
and updated annually. It is crucial that the epipen held at school
is the right one for the age of the child concerned as the dose of
adrenalin needs to be proportionate to the child’s weight. This
relates especially to children as they move from a junior epipen
(green) to the regular one (orange). I ask all parents of students
with an epipen at school to make sure that we hold the most current
action plan. Robert Blanchfield
a video conference at various locations across NSW. Normal
programs will be disrupted at NNPS next Wednesday morning. I expect
there will be very minimal supervision available that morning and
therefore students should arrive in time for recess at 11am. For
the safety of our students, it is recommended that students arrive
for either the 9am bell for 11am. They should not arrive at school
between those two times.
The canteen WILL BE CLOSED on Wednesday as a result of the stop
work.
N.B. The Year 3 excursion to Gibberagong will still go ahead on
the day. Year 3 students still need to be at school as usual in the
morning to catch the excursion bus. Ms McKenzie has checked with
the Centre and it will operate as normal on the day. It was not
possible to change the date of the excursion as there is no other
excursion date free this year and therefore Year 3 teachers have
agreed to be at school and not attend the stop work. Selective High
Schools, Year 7 in 2013 Applications are now open for placement in
a selective high school for Year 7 in 2013. Expression of interest
forms were sent home with all Year 5 students on Wednesday. Most
applications are now completed on line at
www.schoolsnsw.edu.au/shsplacement. For those families without
internet access, a limited number of paper forms are available from
the office. Selective high schools cater for highly achieving,
academically gifted students who may otherwise be isolated from a
suitable peer group. These schools can provide intellectual
stimulation by grouping gifted and talented students together,
concentrating school resources and using specialised teaching
methods. Students are offered places in selective high schools by a
selection committee which considers all available information. The
selective high school test is scheduled for Thursday 15 March 2012.
Our NNPS GATS newsletter Attached with this newsletter is NNPS’s
first GATS (gifted and talented students) newsletter. It is packed
with interesting reports of the exciting GATS programs offered at
NNPS. I congratulate Mrs Karen Reid, our GATS coordinator for her
commitment to GATS programs at our school and for her fine efforts
in publishing this new newsletter. Thank you, Karen!! Sentences of
the Week – guest class: 5B 5B have been working on ‘dressing up a
sentence’ to add more detail/description to our writing. Here are a
few examples from our holiday recounts:

Kindergarten Vegie Garden End-of-Year Report Our little
Kindergarten farmers are reaping the benefits of all their hard
work in planting, watering and nurturing over many months with
bumper crops of beetroot, celery, silverbeet, lettuce, broad beans
and giant zucchinis right now. All 4 Kinder classes also planted
their own beds of seed potatoes with me as part of my K/1 GO GREEN
DAY workshops– if you haven’t seen the resulting green plants
please check them out asap and explain to your young and not such
young ones the magic that is taking place underseed potatoes so
it’ll be interesting to see how many potatoes we produce this time.
Still growing right now, along with the broad beans and zucchinis,
are cherry tomatoes, mini eggplants, yellow squash and this year’s
crop of sunflowers (in honour of Kindergarten’s favourite artist
Vincent!) and we still have time to plant and harvest more radishes
and lettuces before the end of term. The Kindergarten Vegie Garden
has proven to be a wonderful learning experience for over 400
children at NNPS and a great introduction to sustainability
practices for each of the grades K-5 when they were all in
Kindergarten over the past six years since I saw ‘Pete’s Patch’ on
Gardening Australia and asked Paul Wood (our previous Principal) if
I could use the dustbowl barren patch outside my then KH room to
start a vegie garden which would be cared for by my class (after
some initial involvement with planting by the whole school on that
year’s Go Green Day). Each year the other Kinder classes shared in
its successes when they visited KH for singing time each week and
were shown its progress for themselves. I know just how much many,
many children and myself have gotten out of this experience over
the past 6 years and I trust the vegie garden will go onto even
greater success after I retire at the end of the year. I wish next
year’s little vegie gardeners and the garden’s new coordinator well
in 2012!
It’s going to be very hard for me to give up this special
project which has given myself and many, many children so much
enjoyment! Growing your own food is a very rewarding and even a
calming
and healing experience and there’s nothing quite like the thrill
of the harvest – seeing the results of all your hard work and
dedication. A real highlight happened in 2007 when Olympian Ian
Thorpe filmed a segment in the vegie garden with the KH kids
for
use in his ‘Action Earth’ environmental TV series and another in
2009 when I met Peter Cundall at the Gardening Australia Show and
told him how he had inspired me to create this wonderful (9 bed)
vegie garden and help shape the environmental attitudes of many,
many little Narrabeen Northers!! (I of course had A3 laminated
photos to show him the evidence and he was thrilled to hear of his
influence!) Other highlights include winning two grants of $500 and
$700 to extend the garden as a result of submissions I had written
about what we’d already achieved and just seeing the joy on the
Kinders’ faces when they saw their vegies! Elaine Hartman (Vegie
Garden Coordinator 2005-2011)

From the Desk of Miss Dickson A classroom is four walls with
tomorrow inside! Stage 3 News It is hard to believe that it is week
3 term 4, time flies when you are having fun! Stage 3 students are
presently revising concepts and completing common assessment tasks.
It would be great if students could be at school on time and every
day over the next weeks whilst completing these assessments. All
classes are also toe tapping in preparation for our annual dance
concert: ‘Network Narra Presents.... What’s on the box?’ We
appreciate your assistance with costuming as per the note sent out
by your class teacher. Many other fantastic events and programs
occur in term 4 for Stage 3 so stay tuned and look out for notes
and updates. Effective Communicators Competition All students in
Yrs 3 to 6 are currently taking part in this program. Stage 3 class
finals are being held this week. Our two class representatives will
then compete in the grade finals to be held on the Friday of Week
4, after recess. The Effective Communicators for each grade will be
announced on Presentation Day. Leadership Programs Our Yr 5 School
Leader Candidates are embracing their program and proving
themselves to possess many great leadership skills. Our Yr 6
leaders are also embracing opportunities. Last week a group of
twenty Yr 6 students participated in a program with Mrs Pattinson,
from the PCS, to begin the production of a big book of leadership
to pass on to their successors. On November 15, our school
captains, Nina and Conor, will accompany me and their parents to a
leadership session at Parliament House hosted by our local member,
Mr Rob Stokes. Student Leadership is thriving at NNPS! Just Like
You Program Over the past two weeks, as part of our PD/H/PE program
Yr 6 have participated in ‘Just Like You’ run by the Cerebral Palsy
Alliance. We were lucky to have Sam and Gary visit for two sessions
to share with us information about disabilities and broaden our
understanding of how we are all the same and how we can all treat
each other with respect. Thank you so much to Jodie Williams for
suggesting this initiative. We look forward to incorporating this
program into Stage 3 each year. High School Transition Program Over
the last two weeks, Year 6 has also participated in high school
transition sessions, as part of our PD/H/PE Program. The aim of
these sessions is to better prepare our students for their
transition by giving them a taste of high school life whilst
discussing how
to deal with change, new experiences and new challenges. We have
enjoyed an in-school day where the children moved from room to room
and worked with not only class teachers but the high school
counsellor and Mr Blanchfield. In addition to this each class
visited the high school for half a day with another local school
and took part in lessons with actual high school teachers. Milson
Island Year 6 Camp This week notes for our three day camp at Milson
Island went home. Please return the permission note and medical
form by Friday if you have not already done so as I need to
finalise numbers and accommodation arrangements by Monday, 3
November. If your child has been away or somehow misplaced the
notes please remember they are available via the website (under
“Calendar 30/11/11”), office or class teachers. Yr 6 Fundraising,
‘The Bizarre Bazaar’ In week nine of this term Yr 6 will be running
their mini fete in order to leave the school with a gift to
remember them by. Of course we will be running a trash and treasure
stall so if you have any toys, books or ‘bric a brac’ in good
condition please send it in to us (room next door to 6W). All funds
raised from the bazaar will go to the funding of an inbuilt school
BBQ. A huge thank you to Gary Coutts for offering his assistance to
us in the construction of the barbie. Narrabeen North parents are
just fabulous! PBEL INITIATIVE PBEL stands for positive Behaviour
Engaging Learners. Our school is currently reviewing and revising
our student welfare program in light of the PBEL approach (please
see the handout within the newsletter). Eight of our teachers have
undergone training in this approach and we have already begun to
make some changes to our school systems. A new sports code of
conduct, new green cards and new snap tickets has been designed to
incorporate our refined school values. Our values are now reduced
in number to four: NNPS embodies Achievement Respect Responsibility
Acceptance Stay tuned for further updates as we continue on the
PBEL pathway. Carpe Diem Oh and weren’t those Mighty Manly Sea
Eagles fabulous! Enjoy your weekend Michelle Dickson Assistant

CHICKEN POX We wish to advise that there has been a few cases of
CHICKEN POX reported to the school. Please find below some
information about Chicken Pox: What are the symptoms Chickenpox
begins with a sudden onset of slight
fever, runny nose, feeling generally unwell and a skin rash.
The rash usually begins as small lumps that turn into blisters
and then scabs.
The rash appears over three to four days. At any one time, the
lesions of the rash vary in stages of development.
Symptoms usually occur two weeks after exposure to the
virus.
Most people recover without complications, but sometimes the
infection can lead to serious complications, such as pneumonia and
inflammation of the brain. Rarely, the infection can be fatal.
How is it spread? Early on the virus is spread by coughing.
Later by direct contact with the fluid in the blisters. The
infection is highly contagious People are infectious from one or
two days before
the rash appears (Chickenpox infection triggers an immune
response and people rarely get chickenpox twice.
Do I need to keep my child home? Yes, for 5 days after the rash
first appears and until the blisters have all scabbed over.
