As part of our self-review process, this week at our staff meeting we analysed our attendance datafor the first nine weeks of this term. We took particular notice of our absences and discussed theimpact this has on our students to achieve to the best of their ability. I believe that we can havethe best teachers, the best curriculum programs and the best facilities available, but if we donthave students at school, how can we achieve continuous improvement for every child? As aschool community we are asking all parents and caregivers to seriously consider your childrensabsence. I believe together we can reduce the absences by:
As a school-Developing two attendance policies, one to suit the Primary and one for Secondary years.
-Increasing follow up with parents as to reasons for student absences.
-Having dialogue with students around the importance of attending and the impact this can
have on their learning.
As a parent/caregiver-Sending a note or phoning the school when a child has been ill.
-Ensuring when a child misses school due to family reasons that the reasons are substantial.
-Applying for an exemption for extended family reasons.
-Informing teachers/leadership if there are school issues preventing your child attending.
Attendance is EVERYONES business.
I would like to conclude by saying a big thank you to all the school community for the supportshown to me over this first term. I am looking forward to working together for the remainder of theyear so we can celebrate a common purpose of achieving high outcomes for all learners.Lastly I cant wait to see everyone at Sports Day next Friday!Christine Bell, Principal

YOUR SUPPORT IS MY STRENGTH
Dear Parents and Caregivers,
Wow! I just can't believe I have been at YASfor 7 years.
I truly am enjoying my time here and I stillhave that strong passion for teaching andlearning. I thoroughly enjoy my Coordinatorposition in the Primary Years. It is such anenjoyable and rewarding experience.
I would like to take this opportunity to thankparents and caregivers for supporting theirchildren in learning Indonesian. As you mayor may not be aware, learning a language hasa huge impact on children's learning andthere is strong evidence to support this. The
new Australian Curriculum further supportschildren learning languages, and ourengagement with Asia. This term the students have been learningabout school life in Indonesia and basiclanguage surrounding the topic of school'sekolah'. I would appreciate you havingdiscussions with your children aboutIndonesian lessons, which will furtherreinforce their understanding.
I would also like to thank the teachers andstaff at YAS for making Indonesian a part oftheir classrooms and positive conversations.Again, your support is forever appreciatedand helps strengthen your child's learning.Terima KasihBu Kelly.

Yankalilla Sports Day: Friday 12th
AprilOur annual Sports Day is rapidly approaching with the various house
teams already meeng to plan their assault on the Number One
ranking.
We had another very successful Sports Day towards the end of last
year and congratulaons must go to Barker for their rst and well
deserved win in quite a long me. It was great to see so many children
acve, compeng and having a lot of fun. The house rivalry is certainly
alive and well.
A queson comes up every year though about what makes a
successful Sports Day.
For us it is about the very thing menoned above-fun,
parcipaon and the healthy compeve spirit that it
generates. It teaches us how to win and lose gracefully. It
teaches us that compeng and having a go is what is really
important. By having the format we have, each and every
child in our school gets to contribute to their House and gets
to be part of the team. All 354 of them. Each R-2 child gets
to parcipate in at least ten events in the tabloid secon, the sprints and the distance run. Our Years 3-12
students get to parcipate in 8 tabloid events plus the distance run. Then in year levels, our two best
sprinters for each house, parcipate in the sprints. Of course we then have the relays and team games. Lots
of acvity, shared by everyone!
We have had some cricism that perhaps we should return to amore tradional Sports Day. Interesngly, we do parcipate in
two tradional athlecs days each year. One for SAPSASA
(Primary Schools) and one for SSASI (Secondary Schools). In fact,
our students are currently training for SANTOS during their PE
lessons and lunch me sessions. The team will be selected on
merit and on the students desire to parcipate.
Other opportunies for our more elite athletes during the year include, SAPSASA Cross Country, Swimming,
Football and Netball. Knockout Cricket, Football and Basketball also occur at SAPSASA and SSASI levels. All of
these events only occur with the necessary numbers and interest from our student body.
Our current format is designed as an opportunity to engage the whole school in a day of fun, compeon
and acvity and our students seem to agree that this is a preferred opon. So please come and join us on
the day and support your child.

Healthy DrinksDid you know that a 250ml glass of apple juice or cola contains not one but six teaspoons of sugar? Having just one can of so drink
per day adds up to 18 kilograms of sugar in a year! Juice and sweet drinks are not good for kids because the energy they contain enters
kids bodies undetected. They end up consuming more energy than they need, placing them at risk of unhealthy weight gain. Sweet
drinks are also bad for teeth.
Even a glass of unsweetened orange juice contains four teaspoons of sugar. We oen mistakenly give kids juice thinking that that they
need Vitamin C. Fruit juices contain more Vitamin C than kids need. Eang half an orange a day will give kids all the Vitamin C they
need plus some bre.
Because it has no added avours, colours, sugar or energy,
water is the best way for kids to quench their thirst. Milk is also
a great, nutrious drink for kids. Try keeping a jug of water in
the fridge and packing water boles when you go out. If there
are no sweet drinks in the fridge, kids will soon turn to water. If
you serve sweetened drinks as a treat, water them down or use
smaller glasses.
