ASSESSMENT IN ORGANIZATIONS Issue 1 ASSESSING THE ASSESSMENT (What and Why?) February 4, 2018 “MEDIOCRITY IS ALWAYS IN OPPOSITION TO GREATNESS” – JIM COLLINS IN THE NEXT ISSUE… What is an Organizational Assessment? An organizational assessment is just what it sounds like, “an assessment of an organization”. Our company’s overall performance will be evaluated to determine our overall effectiveness to identify our strengths and our areas of opportunity. There are three important ideas that capture and impact that performance: 1) organizational motivation which represents the underlying personality of the company and drives our employees to perform. This can include our mission statement, culture, incentives and rewards, 2) the environment which refers to the “external” environment and what resources are available to the organization to support business efforts which could include economic resources, sociocultural or technological conditions, and lastly, 3) organizational capacity which is how our organization is utilizing our internal resources to perform and can range from leadership efforts to program and process management. Why is an Organizational Assessment Important? The reason an organizational assessment is important to the health of our organization is because we need to be able to identify what we are doing successfully, as well as things or areas that we could potentially improve, remove or change completely to drive better effectiveness or efficiency. We need to be able to adapt to the everchanging needs of our customers, and by identifying our strengths and areas of opportunity, we will put ourselves in a position to be able to plan and adjust accordingly. Why The “Good to Great” Model For our Assessment? We will use the “Good to Great” assessment because our company is still in the “adolescence” stage of growth, and the board feels as though now would be the right time to perform an assessment of how we are performing and what we can do as an organization to take our company to the next level.
