extend to you and your family warm greetings and the blessings of Christ during thiscold winter season. I cannot believe it has been eight months since I arrived at Saint

Johns time certainly ies. One of the many ways we mark the passing of time is through

the Churchs liturgical calendar. The Catechism tells us that the liturgical calendar representsthe yearly celebration of the mysteries of the Lord's birth, life, death, and Resurrectionin such a way that the entire year becomes a 'year of the Lord's grace'. Thus the cycle of

the liturgical year and the great feasts constitute the basic rhythm of the Christian's life ofprayer, with its focal point at Easter."

As the Parish staff & volunteers deliver this edition of the SJA Newsletter, we ndourselves almost mid-way through Lent, a time of penance and renewal. There are a multi-

tude of opportunities for you to grow in your love for Jesus this Lenten season to include:attending the Parishs penance service (March 22), the Chrism Mass at the Diocesan Cathe-dral in Richmond (March 29), or our weekly SJA Lenten dinner-lectures followed by Sta-

    tions of the Cross. Please prayerfully consider participating in our Lenten penance service;

it represents a wonderful means to receive Gods grace and start anew! Additionally, theChrism Mass in Richmond is a beautiful time-honored ceremony (held only once a year) where the Bishop blesses the HolyOils for use at Baptism, Conrmation, and Anointing of the Sick in our Parish. All are welcome to both of these events, and I

guarantee time spent participating in these Lenten observances will renew and deepen your faith.

One of the many things the Church prepares for during this time of year is the full reception of those who have been par-ticipating in the Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults (RCIA). Please continue to pray for the RCIA catechumens, candidates

and conrmandi as they prepare to receive the Sacraments of Initiation. This year our RCIA class includes 28 adults, one of themany signs that SJA continues to grow. In fact, the Parishs growth has reached the point that we have had to install additionalpews in Church. This is surely a sign of growth and the Lords blessing on our community at SJA.

The Parish continues to be a busy place, and I am truly appreciative to everyone for their time and sacrices. Dont forgetto support the SJA School Gala (April 23). A special addition to the auction this year will be a ride on my Harley or in myCorvette, in addition to the traditional Evening of Dinner and Conversation with the Pastor (dont worry I wont be cooking)We continue to prepare for the Bishops Pastoral visit on December 12, 2010 at the 11 oclock Mass. Mass will be followed by

the monthly Knights Breakfast and a town-hall style meeting with the Bishop. Please read the We Walk by Faith Article in thisNewsletter for more details.

Finally, I ask your continued support for the Capital Campaign. As I mentioned earlier, SJA continues to grow and we

must prepare for the future of our community. Our Phase I Building Campaign is the focal point of that preparation. If youhave not pledged to the campaign please do so immediately. I also recommend purchasing a Building Campaign rafe ticketthe winning prize is 7 nights in a two-bedroom accommodation at the Williamsburg Plantation Resort. All rafe proceeds go tosupport the Capital Campaign. I will personally draw the winning ticket on Sunday April, 25, 2010.

    Dear Parishioners:

Its that time for another update on whats been going on with your

Parish Pastoral Council (PPC) since our last Newsletter. First, I am sorry

to report that Cathi Reade requested to resign her position on the PPC.

We reluctantly accepted her resignation with a great deal of remorse.

Cathi has been an extraordinary member on the Council. We will missher leadership and her willingness to take on many tasks. We look for-

ward to her returning to the council in the future.

We were able to ll Cathis vacated position on the Council by fol-

lowing our selection procedure (which you can review on the Parish

website). The candidate to replace a resigning member is determined

from the sequential list of those who participated in the Day of Dis-

cernment last year. I am very happy to report that the next member on

the list was Renee Wert, who has accepted the invitation to become a

PPC member. On behalf of the PPC we welcome her, and we are look-

ing forward to her contributions. When you see Renee, please thank her

and congratulate her as a new member to your Parish Pastoral Council

In addition, the PPC has selected Chris Finocchio as the Vice Chair-

man. Chris will become the Chairman of the PPC for the next term

2010/11. I want to congratulate Chris for being selected as my replace-

ment, since my term on the PPC ends this year.

Also, I think it is appropriate, based on the above, to remind you that this May (starting the weekend of May 1 and 2) we wil

begin the annual process for Naming of parishioners to be discerned and selected as replacements for members whose term

on the Council will be coming to an end in June, 2010. I also ask each of you to please pray and consider those who you would

like to Name, as well as considering yourself as a candidate for the Parish Pastoral Council.

I hope that you had an opportunity to attend the Valentine Dance; it was a great success once again. Those of us who

attended the dance had a great time with our spouses and fellow parishioners. On behalf of the PPC, I would like to thank

Samantha and Scott Lambert and their committee for a beautiful evening. Please put the Valentine Dance on your calendar for

next year. We are planning on having another Parish dance in the fall, so please keep an eye open for announcements and specic

    details.

One last very important piece of information Marilyn Ertel has agreed to take on the responsibility of becoming the new

chairperson for the Social Ministry. This ministry will incorporate both the school and Parish social functions under one head

minister for Community Life. We are excited that Marilyn is taking this on, and we are condent she will establish a successful

Christians are called to a life of prayer and good works. I am continually amazed and thankful for the abundance of charityand good works in our Parish, and so I invite you to a deeper life of prayer this Lenten season. The Church has for centuries had

the custom of celebrating each day with the prayer referred to as the Liturgy of the Hours or the Divine Ofce. It is an ancienand beautiful form of prayer, and this year SJA will host and pray the Divine Ofce together on Holy Thursday, Good Fridayand Holy Saturday. The Divine Ofce is the ofcial Prayer of the Church, and all are encouraged to participate. More detailon this wonderful opportunity to prepare for Easter will be forth coming. May Gods love and divine mercy be with you and your

loved ones this special time of year!

Saint John's Parish Pastoral Council,in consultation with our pastor and afterprayerful consideration, has decided there

was a need to change the Parish missionstatement. With the intent of concisely ex-pressing our mission, the Council believesthe revised mission statement will be easierto communicate and understand through-out the Parish. The revision will also allowus to better focus and align our ministries toour roots as a Catholic community. The newParish mission statement reads:

The mission of St. John the Apostle Catholic Parishis to grow in faith and union with Jesus Christ and oneanother. We strive to be a place where all are welcomeas we respond to the needs of our community and theworld through Word, Worship, Stewardship and Ser-vice

The Building Committee has had several meetings

with our architectural rm, Waller Todd & Sadler and

the lead architect Bill Swegler. The result is an update to

the Phase I design. By now you have seen the new oor

plan in the commons that was posted on the weekend

of February 13/14. There are a few items that should be

    pointed out.

First, the original design space was pretty much

a 75x75 square. For several reasons, the space has

been narrowed in one dimension and elongated in the

other. This has allowed for the roof line to be turned

90 degrees and not follow the current roof line of the

existing commons. Doing so not only enhances the

exterior appearance of the addition and gives it its own

identity, it also allows the addition of a hall and door

to the western exterior that in the future could lead to

a walkway or hall to the new fellowship hall. Also, a

door can be added to the eastern wall that could easily

lead to expanded ofce spaces. The east wall is the one

on the same side as the bell tower that you see dotted on

    the drawing.

The most important advantage of the shape change

and rotation was the space usage. As you stand in the

existing commons and look towards the new you will

    see the following:

    1. On the right the existing Sacristy will be split

A portion of it will be used by the alter servers

to dress for Mass, while a major portion will be

used to expand the gift shop.

    2. Immediately to the right in the new commons

will be a kitchenette. It is planned that this space

will have enough equipment to allow for coffee

and doughnuts to be served after Mass. It will

also be able to warm dishes by the Grievance

Ministry for use after funerals. It can be used by

different groups when having meetings in the

evening. It will also serve the ofce staff during

the week. In fact, this space will be put to many

    uses.

    3. Immediately on the left will be Fathers new

Vesting Sacristy. He will also have access toone of the rest rooms on the weekends before

    Mass from his sacristy.

    4. Down the hall there are two bathrooms that

can be used during the day or in the evenings

when the conference rooms are being used. On

the same side of the hall is a youth activities

room that can be used by our youth for small

    meetings and storage.

    5. The best part of that side of the addition is the

conference room that can be used as one space

or divided into two for concurrent meetings.

The use for these spaces is endless, but will

make it possible to move many activities from

    the school to these rooms.

    6. The ofces are laid out to accommodate the

current ofce staff and to add a couple staff

people that are needed. The reception area wil

have a window to view the hall and the waiting

room area. The other ofces are pretty self-

    explanatory.

    7. Finally the exterior entrance will face the main

parking areas on that side of the church and be

utilized during the day for normal ofce visitsOn the weekends the exterior appearance wil

encourage this entrance to be used as the main

entrance when using the parking lots.

We are very excited about the design of our new

spaces and hope this helps identify some of the these. We

hope you are excited as well. The Building Committee

will be keeping you informed of any changes. We will

post any new drawings in the commons as we receive

them. We also would like to thank you for your supportof the Capital Campaign. Your support will bring this

long awaited dream to reality and be a huge benet to

    our Parish.
