This year we’ll travel to 12 states, including performing at the Handbell Musicians of America Area 7 festival in Rochester, Minnesota, and returning to Lakeland, Florida, to perform at the RP Funding Center in December. It’s impossible to summarize everything that happened last year in such a short space, but here are a few highlights of what the group did last year. Whether you are a supporter, attended a concert, or simply cheered us on from afar, you are a valuable part in helping the group fulfill its mission to promote the art of handbell ringing.

OVER 13,000 PEOPLE ATTENDED CONCERTSIn 2017, the group performed in Delaware, Georgia, Indiana, Maryland, North Carolina, New York, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Virginia. While we had a wonderful time at all of our concerts, we were especially excited to be able to return to The Chautauqua Institute and the Central Pennsylvania Festival of the Arts on our summer tour. As always, our ringers loved interacting with audience members who asked questions, sharing the sights and sounds of handbells with our audiences, and meeting handbell enthusiasts (old and new!).

29 TALENTED MUSICIANS PARTICIPATED IN VIRTUOSORingers from across the United States came to Raleigh to practice, play, and perform with The Raleigh Ringers and legendary director and composer Dr. William Payn. The event culminated in a joint concert with the Virtuoso Ensemble and The Raleigh Ringers at Meymandi Concert Hall.

OVER 500 PEOPLE CAME TO WORKSHOPS & FESTIVALSWe love to see people learn about handbells. Every year the group sponsors the Capital Area Young Ringers Festival (February) and the Capital Area Handbell Festival (November). In addition, we held classes at our building and presented workshops as a part of our concert tours.

NOTES FROM THE GROUP

THE GROUP HELPED PROVIDE HURRICANE RELIEFAfter Hurricane Harvey, Stevie Berryman (Houston Chamber Ringers) was a champion for bell programs hit hard by flooding and connected us with The Jubilee Bells (from the United Methodist Temple in Port Arthur, Texas). The Houston Chamber Ringers cleaned up their bells and got them back to working order, but the Jubilee Bells had also lost all of their tables, foam, and covers.The Raleigh Ringers partnered with Jeffers Handbell Supply to provide foam and covers for the group, and another church in Texas donated tables.In the church’s own words: “We will be ready for the very first Sunday we can be back in our church building. Until then, we are meeting in the fellowship hall and we’ll ring in accompaniment to the Chancel Choir’s cantata the second weekend in December!” The Raleigh Ringers is glad to hear that this bell program is back up and running!


Cameron Carter’s musical journey began at age four when his parents signed him up for music lessons – mostly because they needed a place for him to stay while his older brother was learning violin. He stumbled on the tiny, yet also large, world of handbells five years ago when his brother mentioned that it may be something he would enjoy. Soon, Cameron joined the Jubilate Choir at Fairlington UMC and Virginia Bronze in Alexandria, Virginia. He now joins his brother in musical pursuits as he begins his first season with The Raleigh Ringers.

Matthew Eden, from Charlotte, North Carolina, was first seriously introduced to music through his middle school orchestra where he learned to play viola, leading him to the Charlotte Symphony Youth Orchestra. Handbells were soon introduced to him at Morning Star Lutheran Church under the direction of Ed Tompkins. He progressed quickly, eventually becoming principal violist of the Youth Orchestra and becoming a member of Charlotte Bronze, with which he still performs. Matthew also plays with the Queen City Ringers.

Lauren Housley began ringing at age 12 at the First Presbyterian Church of Ambler, Pennsylvania. She carried her love of ringing into her university career, joining the Rooke Chapel Ringers of Bucknell University. Since graduation, she has performed with community handbell groups, and is now joining The Raleigh Ringers! When not ringing handbells, Lauren can be found up to her knees in any area creek studying aquatic insects for the state of North Carolina, or knitting, crocheting, or spinning.

Allison Keisler, a Virtuoso alumni, is a chorus and handbell teacher at Bandys High School near Mooresville, North Carolina. Her love of handbells started at age nine in her church bell choir – a group she later directed. She has been a member and assistant conductor of several professional handbell groups, and she is currently the organist, pianist, and choir director at her church. She would like to thank her husband, Ben, and their four children for their patience and support of her busy handbell life! Without their support, this dream would not be possible.

THE 2018 RALEIGH RINGERSAuditions for the 2018 season of The Raleigh Ringers are complete and seventeen ringers have been selected for membership, including two charter members and four new ringers. Learn more about our new members below!
