Always Was. Always will Be. The 2020 National NAIDOC Week theme has been developed to shine a focus on the length of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander occupation of Australia. In our narratives Aboriginal people talk of continuous occupation of being here when time began, we are part of the Dreaming – past, present and future. Anthropologists and archaeologists have dated our sites to being hundreds of thousands years old, in fact recording some of these sites as being the oldest on this planet.

Additionally, the NAIDOC theme seeks to get teachers, students and community to explore and learn about, and appreciate the wealth and breadth of Indigenous Nations, languages and knowledges of this continent. Exploring and learning about Indigenous understandings of the environment, plants, animals, greater astronomy and cosmology, waters, land use and protection, Indigenous sciences and maths.

Grade One - Collograph Prints Key concept: Form & Responsibility Line of Inquiry: Our Actions Affect the Environment Art Element: Texture, Colour

In visual arts, students in grade one are connecting to the Line of Inquiry ‘Our actions affect the environment’. As part of taking action and responsibility, students used studio waste materials to create textured print plates! This waste, which would otherwise be destined for the recycle or general waste bin is being put to creative use by the students! We explored various textures and how textures can be felt but also observed. Students chose waste that they thought would create the best textures and glued them to their cardboard plate using PVA glue. The following week, students experimented with their textured plate by brush paint along the plate and placing the plate (like a stamp) on their paper, firmly rolling the top of the plate with a rubber roller (to create even pressure). Once students peeled the texture plate off the paper, it revealed a visual texture. Students took reflective annotations about their prints commenting on their likes

and dislikes and why they think this. Students were encouraged to make multiple prints, each time changing the amount of paint, pressure, direction of their texture plate.

Last week, students used their textured plate to explore colour. Using the colour wheel, we explored colour theory and learned technical vocabulary such as, primary, secondary, tertiary colours and the benefits of complementary, monochromatic and analogous colours. When reflecting, this vocabulary allows us to better explain and discuss our colour choices.

We look forward to choosing our final collograph prints and sharing them with the class and the rest of our school community. Stay tuned!

Want to take your child’s learning further and win some prizes in the process? I encourage your child to take part in the Pollution Solution competition. See flyer for more information!

Grade 3 - Watercolour ExperimentKey Concept: ChangeLine of Inquiry: Various elements can be a catalyst for change’Art Element: Colour

Students in grade 3 are currently exploring watercolor colour techniques to help us inquire into the Line of Inquiry ‘Various elements can be a catalyst for change’. We explored the affixes ‘hydro’ meaning water, ‘philic’ meaning attracting/loving and ‘phobic’ meaning fearing/repelling to create the scientific words hydrophobic and hydrophilic.

Hydrophobic: Water repellingHydrophilic: Water attracting

We conducted a watercolour experiment with salt and wax (oil pastels) to see how these two mediums react when used with water colours. Once students developed their own hypotheses, they began to experiment! During the experiment we also explored colour theory by using primary colours to help create secondary watercolours. The following week, students reflected on their observations, shared what they learned during the experiment and developed further wonderings.

WonderingsWhy doesn’t the wax change colour? Raymond 3JH Why are you able to see the wax even though you couldn’t really see it without the paint? Eric 3JHWhat will happen if you mix wax with salt? Katherine 3JHWhat will happen if watercolour paint and a yellow oil pastel mix up together? Sisika 3JHAre there any rules? Shahira 3JHHow did the wax show after we painted the water colours on top and how did the salt become the same colour as the paint? Elanah 3JH

The following lesson, students built on their watercolour knowledge by exploring the techniques wet-on-wet and wet-on-dry to create simple landscapes. We used the colour wheel to discuss analogous colours and how these colours are easier to blend as opposed to complementary colours. We plan on using our knowledge of water colours to help create our Artist Books! Stay tuned!

Grade 4 Blackout Poetry Book Week ThemedKey Concept: Connection

Students in grade 4 explored blackout poetry for Book Week. They observed samples of blackout poetry to establish a connection between the words, images, patterns, shapes and colours. Students began creating their blackout poetry creations by scanning the text for at least four interesting/descriptive words which they felt a connection to. From there, students chose one ‘anchor’ word.

This anchor word is what students then based the rest of their poem on. Observing and scanning the surrounding words, students were reminded that the poem must read from top to bottom, just like reading a book! This task took students 2 sessions and will form part of their summative Artist Book creation at the end of the semester. Stay tuned to see our final creations!

3JH Onsite Camp

Firstly, I would like to thank all Grade 3 students for their fabulous start to Term 4! I would like to particularly mention the magnificent attitude towards learning all Grade 3 students have displayed thus far throughout Term 4. I urge all students to keep displaying all the PYP learner profiles throughout all aspects of their learning.

Last week 3JH participated in the Grade 3 onsite camp. I’d like to thank all parents/guardians for their kind donations, which made the onsite camp possible. These donations went towards giving all Grade 3 students an experience they can reflect on in many years to come.

All students were respectful throughout all onsite activities. I would like to thank all students for their positive attitude and willingness to engage in all activities.

Students participated in a variety of tasks which prompted independence, teamwork and responsibility. All learners presented a vast amount of knowledge in relation to our Central Idea “Individuals and groups have the responsibility to follow laws and rules for a peaceful co-existence”. Through engaging in camp rules, working in a team and presenting responsibility all students displayed our current central idea in various forms.

Finally, I would to mention, that this experience could be used as an artefact for our current inquiry. Students might like to make a poster about onsite camp, A learner profile presentation related to onsite camp, how teamwork was used to be a successful learner, how conflict was managed or any concept or idea which engaged your child.

Enjoy reading 3JH’s reflections.

Kind regards, Mr Harkins

Neriah presented an amazing attitude throughout Onsite camp! She should be proud of all her efforts and achievements. Neriah

I enjoyed doing fun games with my friends and eating popcorn while watching the movie. The movie was so interesting. Playing minecraft is what we can do at school anyway, but I enjoyed doing other activities. Devansh

I most enjoyed doing the water race, my second thing I liked having the pizza and chips. The third thing I liked the most was having the ice cream, my fourth thing I loved was everything. I enjoyed everything because I really like everything, we did over the three days. Clair

I enjoyed the movie, popcorn, tents, dash and dots, games, pizza and chips. Raymond

Shahira did a fantastic job with onsite camp! She displayed carious learner profiles. These included caring, thinker and communicator. Shahira

I liked watching the movie and eating popcorn and pizza. Riley

I liked everything. I didn’t have anything else in mind. Isla

I enjoyed making things out of boxes. I also enjoyed making and putting the tents up. ElliotI enjoyed doing the water race, pizza and chips, the gelato/ice cream at Italian and basically everything apart from tents because it was a bit embarrassing because I had to do it in a super windy spot. The popcorn whilst watching the movie was awesome. The specialist also was very fun even if I had to get soaked with water in P.E. Shaabaz

Camp was fun, but it wouldn’t be as fun as real camp. The most fun activities were the water race, doughnut eating, indoor spots, Italian and outdoor sport. The only thing that was not as fun like tents because we got the broken one. Advay

My favourite activity during onsite camp was the one where you set up a tent. It was a lot of fun because I actually used my strength for a good purpose and the tent looked soooo cool. My second favourite was the activity where you ate the doughnut without using your hands because I won, and the doughnut was fantastic!!!!!! I also liked eating the gelato because who doesn’t like ice-cream? Eric

I enjoyed the tents and the building box building, the donut eating challenge and the scavenger hunt, and I used principled open-minded and caring pulse when we got to dress up in our PJ’s. I love that we got to play football and table tennis, but I loved the tents. And pizza day. Elanah

I enjoyed the tents and scavenger hunt because Max and I were doing the tents together and it was fun. Luca

I enjoyed doing the scavenger hunt, coding with dash and dot bots, eating pizza and chips and water race. I liked eating the ice-cream in Italian, I ate strawberry flavour and it tasted good. Max, Luca and I were building a tent, but it didn’t work so we just packed up. Sathvik

3JH Onsite Camp

I enjoyed the donuts, scavenger hunt, tents and water race. I enjoyed everything. Jet

I enjoyed the water race, the tents, the scavenger hunt, the donut competition. It was so much fun and I loved the pizza and chips. I loved the movie and the popcorn. The movie we watched was called Stuart Little. The movie was funny. I enjoyed everything basically. We didn’t have to wear uniforms! On Wednesday we got to wear casual clothes, on Thursday we wore pj’s and on Friday we go to wear fancy dress. For fancy dress I wore a dress with a cowgirl hat. Everything was so much fun!!!!!!!!!!!!! On Thursday I wore a rabbit pj’s and on Wednesday I wore a blue top and shorts. AWESOME ONSITE CAMP. Sisika

I enjoyed Onsite Camp! Maddy

I enjoyed doing many and almost all the activities at the three-day not actually camp, but here are the highlights. First would be doing the cinnamon donut eating competition. I found it fun and liked the extra challenge of having your hands behind your back. Coming into second place for my favourites would definitely be the ice-cream (or gelato) we had in Italian. Aside from that I also found it pretty cool that we didn’t have to wear any school uniform or scratchy school jumpers. Vyvi

I enjoyed the water race, tents, scavenger hunt and pizza and chips. I liked the water race because we were split up into groups to see who could get the most water in their bucket in the time limit of 5 minutes. I was interested in the tents because my group got the most complicated tent and we actually got to go inside it! I had fun in the scavenger hunt because we had to find different clues and answers to the tasks. Last of all I loved the pizza and chips because we didn’t have to bring other lunches and it was yummy! Maya

I enjoyed the scavenger hunt because I could spend time with my friends and it was really fun. Max

I enjoyed the water race, putting up the tents, and the donut challenge. I also enjoyed the gelato we had in Italian and watching the movie on Friday. Renee

Katherine completed onsite camp with independence and high levels of respect! She should be proud of her achievements. Katherine

I enjoyed table soccer, donuts, talking with friends, water race, gelato (Ice cream) and the dash bots. Joey

Science Fair recounts from last week

I liked informing kids on things and teaching them things. But I also really liked doing the experiments. Piper 5GC

I liked watching the videos and making the experiments! Olivia 5GC

I liked gathering information about my project, so it would sound more professional. Shanna 5KW The thing that I liked the most was that I got to try something new and making the imovie was also very fun since we got to try all the filters and stuff. Khushman 5KW I liked how we could do research and we could do our own experiments. I also liked how we covered the basics of energy like the laws of conservation and more. Avie 5KW I loved doing and explaining the experiment while also doing it with my friends including making the powerpoint and I also loved all the classes interviewing us and giving us questions to answer and feedback. Mankaran 5KW

The Science Fair was really fun because we got to experiment with different types of energy such as hydro energy, solar energy and thermal energy and learn ways we can improve our future experiments. A challenging part of completing the scientific method was the time constraint however we managed the experiment in our groups, persisted with the difficulties and was able to present to the Seabrook school community over the last few days. Sri 5SK/CM

I really enjoyed working with my group on the Science Fair project. Although we had a rough start because we weren’t organised, our group members learned to use our self-management skills to share responsibilities to complete our project which was a solar powered car. We received a lot of positive feedback on our presentation, including the design of our solar car and the engaging video we created which took us quite a while to complete. I have always been interested in science and it was really great to show my passion through our project. My team did really well too and learnt a lot about electronics. Yarik 5SK/CM

The Science Fair was fun because I enjoyed working with my friends and learning about solar energy and how it works. I really enjoyed making the video by conducting interviews and selecting the music. The most challenging part was actually filming the interviews because I’m not used to being filmed, and I kept making mistakes. I was also challenged with completing the experiment. The solar car we used broke and we had to quickly fix it. It all worked out in the end because Yarik completed tests at home which helped our group a lot. Cristian 5SK/CM

Our group completed the solar hot water can experiment. We wanted to find out what the difference in water temperature between a normal coloured can and black, pink and white painted cans. The most challenging part of our experiment was when we had to complete the trials because some days it was very sunny and other days it wasn’t very sunny. We had trouble finding out how much the temperature increased because we started at different water temperatures for each day. If we could change anything we would change the days that we conducted the experiment to hotter days so that we could learn more from our experiment. Sahasra 5SK/CM
