NEWSLETTER Week 9 - Term 1 4 April 2019 Dear Parents, Families and Carers, I had the wonderful opportunity this week to join in with the many boys and girls, parents, families and teachers at the Riverside Runners Club. The club meets every Tuesday and Thursday morning at 7:40am on the oval and run, walk, jog or, in the case of some students ‘talk’ their way around a big circuit of the school oval. Afterwards we all enjoyed a delicious breakfast prepared especially for the end of term by the Snack Shack – School Canteen. A huge thank you to our Canteen Manageress Trudy, our many parent volunteers and our Canteen Coordinator Coralie for organising the breakfast for our runners and families. The Runners Club is a fantastic initiative and one that is a true example of the great family and community feeling in our school. Well done to Mr Mike Staples, our PE Specialist Teacher for his enthusiasm and energy that has been so contagious for our students to catch on to. Any children, families and parents who would like to come along and see what all the fun is about you just need to fill in a form available from the front office and ‘turn up at the time and join in’. We all participate at our own fitness level …. I am not ashamed to admit that at one point I was overtaken by a mother with a pram! Come along and join in and add to the fun. Our Year 3 and 5 students will be practicing over the coming weeks with laptops and iPads, in preparation for the upcoming NAPLAN online testing program in early Term 2. A big thank you to Mr Wilson and Mrs Morris who have been working hard behind the scenes to ensure the internet servers, hubs and devices are ready to take on the tests. While NAPLAN tests are always an important source of information and reporting on students and our curriculum programs, it is important to realise that it is only one source of testing that we do with our students. It is a very valid and rich ‘check in time’ for our students that we use together with all the individual class tests and year level tests that the teachers use to assess the capabilities of each student. Parents can support and prepare their children for the NAPLAN tests by; speaking positively about the tests, providing adequate sleep patterns (at least 10 hours per night), allowing a quiet study area free from distractions for students to keep up their ‘normal’ Lit Pro Home Reading Program and discussing with their class teacher any areas to focus on leading into Term 2. As I write this our school ‘Parent/Teacher’ interviews are underway this week, in particular during the Wednesday and Thursday early close afternoons. These interviews are an important opportunity for us as parents to touch base with our child’s teacher and have a chat about their learning activities and achievements. Parents who have been unable to make the interview times can contact the classroom to organise an appropriate meeting time. A big thank you to our hard working staff who also give up their time to stay later and engage in the parent interviews. Being able to sit in the class rooms during these interviews you can see the great work around the pin up spaces and how pleasing it is to see our own child’s work on display. With the holidays only a week away, I would like to wish everyone a wonderful happy Easter and a safe and enjoyable school break. Keep up the great Home Reading kids during the school break!
