Education in the OLSH Tradition: Touch the Hearts of Others

Dear Family and Friends of Our Lady of the Sacred Heart College,

Well known artist Patricia Ann Thompson (grandmother of Kiara Gwynne, Year 7) donated to the College her painting of Mary MacKillop. This painting is called 'View' from her Have Faith series. We thank Patricia Ann for her generosity and for her inspiration - the title 'View' is simply...to look out.. Mary MacKillop in her life of service and love of others was a woman who was always looking out to God - for others! Open Day is our opportunity to welcome others to OLSH Bentleigh - indeed we have something special here. This is an important day in our school year and we look forward to proudly sharing the spirit of OLSH with all who visit us on this day.

Mary MacKillop had a great love for children and young people which grew out of her experience of loving and caring for her own brothers and sister whom she loved dearly. Her concern was always to let them know they were valued and loved and that they could make good choices in their lives. In her work of educating children and young people, Mary showed in practical ways that they were important members of society. She also taught compassion and a way of being of service to the poor. St. Mary of the Cross MacKillop, pray for us.

Our politicians have been talking about the 21st century as being the Asian century. At OLSH College we have been addressing this issue but unpacking the Asian Perspectives cross curriculum priority of the Australian curriculum. The Australian curriculum states: The Asia and Australia’s engagement with Asia priority provides a regional context for learning in all areas of the curriculum. It reflects Australia’s extensive engagement with Asia in social, cultural, political, and economic spheres…..

This priority will ensure that students learn about and recognise the diversity within and between the countries of the Asia region. They will develop knowledge and understanding of Asian societies, cultures, beliefs and environments, and the connections between the people of Asia, Australia, and the rest of the world. Asia literacy provides students with the skills to communicate and engage with the people of Asia so they can effectively live, work and learn in the region.

Director of Curriculum, Amanda Malone and I have been accepted into an intensive professional development program run by the Asia Education Foundation; Leading 21st Century Schools: Engage with Asia professional learning program

This is a national professional learning program for principals and school leaders. Specifically, the L21CS Program:

builds awareness of the current and future global significance of Asia, and the importance for Australia to engage with Asia.

supports schools to implement national policies on Asia, including the Australian Curriculum priority of Asia and Australia’s engagement with Asia.

supports the development of whole-school approaches to ensure the development of sustainable Asia literate policy and programs.

As participants we will reflect on and learn about the features of an Asia literate school. We will be then able to use particular

tools to audit our school: most particularly the Issoudun: B@B Asian Perspectives program.

We will consider a set of 12 indicators of an Asia literate school, including matters such as whether our team is committed to a

whole school, across-the-curriculum approach to Asia literacy; if Asia literacy is integrated with other education priorities and

whether our students have the opportunity to learn an Asian language. This activity will provide an overview of progress towards

Asia literacy.

Back at school, we will then be able to consider our school’s curriculum, faculty by faculty, identifying where Asia- related content

is included and, of course, where it is not. We are looking forward to being able to report our progress to the school community.

Watch this space.

Hoping to see many students and parents at the Parent Teacher night next week.

On the Monday, 5 August, Year 7, 8 and Issoudun students had an assembly to celebrate ‘Just BU Day’. The founder of BU Day, Lisa Donath has a great message. She says “be yourself, stay true to yourself, believe in yourself and nothing can get in your way.” The students welcomed Melina Bagnato, a former OLSH student back to the College (pictured right). Melina, a successful business woman, a mother and a contestant on the most recent My Kitchen Rules series, shared her story with the students. She was funny, witty, engaging and encouraged the students to be real, be who they are and not worry about what others think. Ms Elizabeth Miller, State Member for Bentleigh then shared her story with the students. She spoke about her school years and how people did not think that she was smart enough to follow her dream career pathway. She encouraged the students to fight for what they really wanted and not to let anything stand in their way. Elizabeth further expressed that if we live by the OLSH mantra, “We believe, we achieve” that chances are we will be able to succeed. The message of the day was really positive. There is great power in positive thinking. Here is a simple way remind yourself to be positive every day. Perhaps you can encourage your daughters to do this…. ‘Make your passwords act as positive affirmation. Choose passwords that make you feel good about yourself. Choose something that will make you smile. This might be as simple as smile678, or something closer to your heart. Whatever it is, make is personal and positive.’

From the Hartzer Blog: When we arrived in Sydney, we got on a ferry and left for Manly. Everyone was very excited for the sight of an OPEN McDonalds.

After having free time we got back on the ferry and arrived back at Circular Quay. We then had to complete the task of visiting different locations such as Hyde Park, Government House, the Sydney Opera House and The Rocks.

We arrived at Hartzer Park at 7:45pm and had some yummy zucchini soup that Ms Naylor prepared for us.

This year we shall celebrate Science Maths Week again at OLSH. There will be activities running every day next week (except Wednesday - Parent Teacher Interview Day). Watch Ametur every day for details of the super fun-filled activities.

One activity will be a PHOTOGRAPHY COMPETITION.

You are to photograph a scientific concept or a mathematical concept in a manner that is creative but also helps to highlight the principle you are focusing on. You are to give your photo a title and write an accompanying piece - no more than 50 words - describing the principle/ concept illustrated.

Photos are to be no larger than A4 and they may be colour, black and white or sepia. They are to be submitted in print form into a drop box at student reception. A digital image should be deposited on to an online drop-box (details next week).

Competition Closes: Friday, 16 August 2013

There is a limit of 2 entries per person. Judging criteria includes:

Clarity of scientific or mathematical principle

Accuracy of scientific or mathematical principle – supplemented by the written explanation

Creativity/originality

Tip of the Week! Girls start preparing for the Super Science and Maths Quiz! It is always great fun. Be involved! Not just for the

great prizes but for the excitement of being part of a fantastic event.

Ms Bernadette McGill and Ms Dianne Byers Maths and Science Domains

Every week a group of Year 7 students gather in the Chemistry lab. They meet with a common goal: to grow a large crystal from a solution of crude potash alum and to use the crystals to produce a piece of photographic artwork that demonstrates the crysta ls’ properties and behaviour (for instance, the way light is refracted through it, how it distorts images behind it). The Royal Australian Chemistry Institute is running the competition www.raci.org.au/theraci/the-raci What do the students submit? Each team submits:

1 Photo of full grown crystal (next to ruler, to show size) 1 Artistic Photo One A4 page report

The winners will be judged on (a) how clearly they have reported their observations on the rate of growth, size and shape of their crystals, as well as the size of their finished crystal and (b) how artistic their digital photographs of the crystal they have grown are, using light, shade, reflection, refraction and diffraction patterns.

Reports are due by 4 October. Results will announced by the end of October. The girls have been working with great enthusiasm. They are developing excellent skills in using the laboratory equipment. It would appear that we have some potential chemists in the group!

Four girls from the Year 11 physics class had the privilege of participating in the Melbourne Engineering Links Project during the holidays. The project went over two days and was held at Swinburne University of Technology. There were over 50 students, from Wodonga to Bentleigh, given the chance to explore the engineering profession across many different fields and to see what university is like for up-and-coming engineers.

As we arrived, we were amazed to see we were four of just seven girls. After a brief introduction, we were given the chance to choose a specific engineering discipline, and from that, we were separated into groups. Leanne Haidar and Kaylee La’Brooy, along with Jasmina Lieu and Chloe Lewis chose to be in the civil discipline - where we were put in smaller groups and had to plan, design and test the construction of a bridge made from simple materials. This included doing all the necessary calculations needed to ensure the bridge wouldn’t break when someone walked across, with the appreciated help of civil engineer Dave, who also gave us a lot of information about this field. By the end of the first day, we had met many people and had learnt a lot about civil engineering, and we finally realise that, surprisingly, trigonometry is helpful in real life!

Day two, again, we had the choice of going into other engineering disciplines. Some of us went into aeronautical, where we built parachutes in an attempt to drop an egg from a height of five metres without breaking the egg. We met a pilot from the defence force who explained the field of aeronautical engineering. Others went into mechatronics, where they made a lego car with a working motor that had to travel two metres in ten seconds. This included experimenting with gears with the help of Vinesh, a university student

studying mechatronics at RMIT. Kaylee La’Brooy and Leanne Haidar

, held on 15 July, all teaching and support staff listened to Fr. Richard Leonard, a Jesuit

priest, explore the theme 'What makes a Catholic School Catholic?' We heard that it is not because our education standard is good, or that we have good discipline, or that we have a good pastoral care program - because all schools should be doing these things. What makes OLSH, as a Catholic school, different is that we are a praying community, we hand on the tradition of the church and we make it a priority to teach our students how to take our Catholic world out into the rest of the world.

We also explored what it is that people are most looking for when the Church gathers for liturgy - a warm and generous community, good music, good preaching and a community which practises what it preaches.

One of the most informative segments of the day was called 'The Good We Rarely Tell Anyone'. Did you know that St Vincent de Paul is the largest and most extensive volunteer welfare network in the country with over 18,000 members and nearly 31,000 volunteers? They are also the largest provider of trained personnel for the developing world. The Catholic Church is also the largest welfare provider outside the government, with 1.1 million clients cared for in 2012. These facts barely touch on the many and significant contributions that the Catholic Church makes to social justice, welfare, health and education in Australia and overseas. How proud we should be.

This program explored ways to integrate the practice of

meditation into the daily life of schools. It focussed on the practice of meditation from a wellbeing and educational perspective in relation to the Christian tradition. The participants discussed practical support for practicing meditation in the secondary classroom and looked at the structures and processes that support the ongoing practice of meditation in schools. The presenters, Chris Morris, Cheryl Dwyer and Louise Harris were informative and engaging. There will be a follow up to this course in November.

Congratulations to all girls who competed in the annual SCSA Football at Highett Reserve. In particularly difficult conditions with a very cold wind blowing all day, the girls did fantastically. We were in Division 1 this year, up against some much bigger schools and it was great to see both teams win games on the day. In a first this year we fielded a junior team, consisting of Year 7, 8 and a small handful of Issoudun students (with many away at Hartzer Park). Our senior team finished 5th with two wins for the day in the group stage. Our senior team farewells some of the College’s finest footballing talent, with special mention to Megan Supple and Alana King who were joint MVPs and have been the backbone of the midfield since the team began. Our junior team finished 3rd with one win in the group stage. Many young guns emerged on the day and the team looks set to improve for next year, with help from the St Peters, Highett and East Sandringham football clubs all now fielding junior teams - the skills and commitment was of a very high standard. Thanks to Miss Bernadette Anderson and Mrs Bronwyn Verrell who coached sides on the day, and also to Year 12 student Hayley Lyons, who showed tremendous leadership and coached the junior team on the day. Also, a very big thank you to Mrs Maureen Malone and the Year 12 Vet Sport and Recreation class who convened the day with a tremendous amount of competence for an upcoming assessment.
