VET NOTES Sharon Hoofnagle D.V.M. A Few Winter Health Tips “Thanks for coming out doc. Smoky must have found a piece of metal in the field last night, pretty nasty cut.’ We got Smoky in the barn and I started to clean the wound. I had to dig the portable light out of the truck, the old barn didn’t have the best lighting. As I cleaned the wound it was pretty obvious that the injury didn’t occur last night. In fact, it didn’t occur last week. Granulation tissue, known as proud flesh, was trying to fill in the wound. But the wound was right above the hoof, and Smoky’s legs were covered in mud. The cut was not visible in the poor light. Smoky would heal but it was going to take a lot of treatment and time. So was his person a negligent horseperson? Winter can be challenging in our area. Short daylight hours, feeding in the dark morning and evening after a long day at work, plus dealing with cold rain and mud is difficult. It’s easy to overlook an injured or sick horse Here are some tips Try to watch all four legs on your horse move at least once a day- you are looking for lame-ness, head nod or stiffness Check both eyes daily, you are looking for swelling or any eye held shut or squinting. Make sure your horse is eating hay at least 5 min. and eating with gusto. An ill horse may come in to eat but then quit after a few minutes, or just mouth the hay. Has the usual amount of hay been consumed since the last feeding? Check to see if there is the usual amount of manure to clean up. Is the manure normal in appearance? Small hard fecal balls indicate an impaction starting. Has the normal amount of water been consumed? Last but not least, if your barn lighting isn’t the best invest in a good flashlight.

Whatcom and Skagit BCH Christmas Party Friday, December 7, 2018

Social Hour at 6:00 p.m. Dinner at 7:00 p.m. Alger Community Hall, 18735 Parkview Ln. Alger

This year Whatcom and Skagit Chapters will celebrate Christmas parties together. Both clubs will provide Ham and Turkey. The rest will be potluck. Please bring a side dish share. Bring your favorite dish, anything that goes with ham and turkey! Be sure to mark your dish and serving utensils. The club will provide plates, utensils, napkins and cups. We will have punch and coffee. We will be eating at 7:00 p.m. If you would like to participate in the gift exchange please bring a new wrapped gift, $15.00 or less. We encourage you to invite potential young riders! The committee is working on the process for kid’s gifts, if there are enough kids, the gifts maybe in a separate table so they can participate on an exchange. If the children are too young or the parents don’t want them to participate in the exchange, parents can bring a gift for their children, be sure to put their names on the gift. This year we will be collecting non-perishable food for Skagit. Since Whatcom took the donations last year, this year it’s Skagit’s turn. The committee decided to just collect food, but if you wish to donate toys, socks or gently used clothing, this will also go to Skagit to take to a charity or you can take these items to Toys for Tots in Whatcom and not to the Christmas party. Come celebrate Christmas with us! (No alcohol, smoking allowed in the premises ) Directions: From Bellingham, take I-5 South, take exit 240 (Alger), turn

left on Samish Road continue for about one mile, turn right on Old WA-99 continue for about one block, turn right on Parkview Lane.
