The NEW Club Colours
As the calendar year draws to its inevitable close it is natural to reflect on your year.
Personally, I have enjoyed my running but have endured some nagging injuries and soreness. I am managing them with help (thanks Abby) and hope to regain some of my speed and endurance.
At club level I have been thrilled at the increased involvement of the HBRC at a community level. The growth of the Phar Lap 2 Mile as a community event is very promising. The 2018 Christmas Gift 1500m saw the first tentative, yet important, steps of an event uniting the three tenants of the Newport Athletics track – Williamstown Little Athletics, Williamstown Athletics Club and the Hobsons’s Bay Running Club. We can be extremely proud of our club committee’s vision and work ethic that has progressed the idea so far.
Club Patron, John Condon, deserves our thanks for all that he does for us. Training nights, handicaps
and other events – John is always there. Thanks John, from all of us.
The final issue of our Newsletter, Home Runs, is the perfect place to acknowledge our sponsors, John Ayton at Sport Power in Douglas Parade, Williamstown and Abby Speakman at Running Physiotherapy in Ferguson Street, Williamstown. And so, the end of 2018 and a short rest break for many is almost upon us. I hope it’s been
a good year for you and that you enjoy your end of year celebrations whether that be a family Xmas get together, a raucous New Year celebration, reunions with friends, time at the beach or longer trips further away or just some quiet time at home with your feet up. Don’t forget to sneak in a run now and again for your health and well-being.
For those who couldn’t make it, the AGM resulted in the status quo pretty much being maintained for the coming year with Peter, John and I continuing to hold our existing executive positions. Luckily, we continue to have a large group who volunteered to assist on committee during 2019 (thanks guys and gals) which will be a busy year. For the club to remain vibrant, the aim should be for general committee members to cycle through the executive positions, so please let us know during the year if you are interested in stepping up. The first club committee meeting for 2019 will be held on Tuesday 22nd January.
From the feedback I’ve received, the 17 club members who attended the AV Level 1 Run Leader coaching course found it a very rewarding and enjoyable experience. You will notice at Tuesday night track a few minutes of warm up exercises are now included immediately prior to the main session and a slow group warm down afterwards, so please factor this in when you come for the session. You are also encouraged to arrive early enough to complete a few minutes of slow running to gradually loosen up those muscles plus increase your blood flow and heart rate prior to the exercises and the main session.
Expect more developments on the coaching and mentoring front as our run leaders progressively
develop their skills to better cater for the expectations of all club members in our diverse group from wide and varied backgrounds and capabilities. During 2019, some who completed

The Xmas dinner was a very enjoyable night and well attended by around 30 people. Thanks to the social committee for organising another successful event.
2019 will see 2 major club milestones at mid-year – the 25th anniversary of the club and the 300th Saturday Handicap so expect lots more info on this over the coming months. If you maintain contact with any former or semi-retired members of the club, make sure you let them know and keep them informed on details, as we would love to see them return for the festivities.
The Daylight - Saving Series is ticking over nicely, and the way the points are set up literally anyone can win it who has competed in one event so far.
The Xmas Gift on 18th December will probably be run and won by the time you receive the newsletter. For those who didn’t make it, you will have to view the results on Facebook to see who won the shield and how things stand once the DSS points table is updated.
December 29th is showdown time for the Cups and it’s almost impossible for Kieran to be unseated from his winning position. That said the placings are still up for grabs so do come along and enjoy our last run of the year.
And lastly, an unofficial club weekend has been proposed at Falls Creek for the weekend of 1st/2nd February 2019. If you’re keen to enjoy some socialising, clean alpine air plus a bit of altitude training please register your interest on the Facebook post as there is still plenty of space. The number who have registered interest so far, indicates it’s a goer, so expect further advice.

Did you know that runners have higher iron requirements than average? Iron is an
important part of our blood that enables oxygen to be circulated from the lungs to the muscles. Iron deficiency, called anaemia, causes low energy levels, as the body cannot efficiently transport oxygen around. For the runner, the reduced oxygen to the muscles will affect performance and additionally the fatigue may impact on training.
Interestingly runners have higher iron requirements than others due
to increased loss. The ‘foot strike’ action damages red blood cells in the feet and extra iron is required to replace the lost red blood cells. Iron is also lost through sweat.
A simple blood test ordered by your GP can determine if your iron status is adequate. Any unexplained signs of fatigue could possibly be iron deficiency and should be discussed with your doctor.
In some cases iron supplements are required, in the short or long term, to boost iron levels and
your doctor can advise you about this. However, most people can consume enough iron in their diet to meet their needs. We absorb iron from meats easily but vitamin C can assist absorption of plant-based iron, which is harder to absorb. This can be achieved by eating fruit or vegetables (preferably uncooked) alongside iron containing foods. Avoid drinking tea with meals as it can reduce iron absorption. See list below for examples of iron rich foods.

A great turnout from the co-tenants of Newport athletics track made the Christmas Gift
a night to remember and a taste of what could be!
Members of Williamstown Little Athletics, the Williamstown Athletics Club and the Hobson’s Bay Running Club were joined by the general public who just wanted to run. There were life-savers from both sides of the bay and also the west coast.
3 events: 120m sprint, 400m and 1500m.
An appreciative crowd cheered the runners on and stayed around for the presentations.
120mYours truly lined up in the first of
the 4 heats of the 120m dash. The field was a mix of little athletes, budding sprinters in their late teens and a proud senior. The line-up was the perfect example of what we were hoping for – all comers competing together for the fun of it. I was in the pink colours and
was off 35m, in the lead from the get go. At check in I was warned by handicapper David Jamieson, “If you win by more than 5m you’ll be shot!” There was no chance of that happening. The gun fired and I led for half the distance then the youth caught me, or was it ‘my age caught up with me?’ Regardless it was fun and got the night off to a great start. The 120m final was taken out by the winner of my heat – Jack Wolff.
1500mOur Christmas Gift 1500m was
the next event on the program. 31 competitors, perfect conditions. Being a handicap there was a steady stream of runners taking off at their allotted time and the early starters had completed their first 400m before the back markers had even commenced the chase.
The winner was our very own President, Rob Falloon, maintaining his excellent handicap form. John

Ayton came in second, bettering his Spring 1500m time and Eero Keranen took third place.
400m The final event had a field
of 9 male athletes: 6 little athletes and 3 much bigger and much faster young men. The big boys had a lot of ground to make up (nearly 85m). They managed to reel the juniors in by the home straight then fought it out to the line.
The Hobos did what they do best providing a BBQ with salads, fruit, fresh bread and drinks to the delight of the competitors and their families and friends.
Robbie Spencer, a member of Williamstown Athletics Club and a junior coach was the key organiser on the night and he did a great job. Robbie and our very own Peter Buissink made the presentations for each of the three events. There were cash prizes for the first 8 in all three events, open to all comers.
As Robbie said on the night, it exceeded our expectations. All three clubs agreed that tonight was a great start and hopefully next year it will be bigger and better, now that we are getting to know each other. There should be more of it.

November Results
This handicap report is all based on anecdotes from others but by all accounts I missed a
beauty. Here is how it unfolded to me.Graeme Dewerson was the initial
winner of the November handicap. I think the term is ‘provisional’.
Steve Glover was the first member across the line but was originally thought to be ineligible.
On review, he was eligible and was declared the ‘official’ winner of the November 5km Handicap. A time of 21:18, 37 seconds outside his AGPB.
Graeme was in 2nd place with a time of 22:32, a PB by 33 seconds and Kjetil Wormnes finished 3rd in a time of 21:26, a 10 second AGPB. Great race running.
Other good times were by Jo Hammet 21:49 (-0:02), Rob Falloon 22:32 (-0:12), Diane Donaghue 34:09 (-1:00), Tom Glover, 18:16 (-0:18), Kaylee Jordan 20:27 (-0:13) and Grant Jordan 22:04 (-1:09).
A delicious quote from Steve at the Hobo’s Christmas function at The Prince Albert Hotel summed it all up, “It’s been 12 years and 2 months and 12 kilos, since I have won an egg – but who’s counting!”
A very worthy winner. Congratulations Steve. It was great to see you back.

put in very good runs, each earning the exact same number of points – 27. That should have ensured little change on the overall tables. Not so!
With his November run, Kieran completed his 8th handicap for 2018, and consequently leaped to the top of the table, over a small group of contenders - Rob, Terry and John – who have not missed a handicap all year. Because of this fact, total points are more difficult to improve at the pointy end of the season.
The upshot of all this is, Kieran can only be caught by Rob if Rob
wins the December Egg with a PB and Kieran does a really dodgy job assisting at the final handicap of the year.
So the stage is set for a super final 5km run for the year. Come along and watch it unfold in person. Bring your friends and family. Bring the dog. After November and its repercussions, I’m not going to predict anything.
What’s that saying ‘Truth is stranger than fiction’?
It sure is right on the money, as you couldn’t make this stuff up.

Train With The HobosOur club trains as a group
on three occasions during the week. Tuesday and
Thursday evenings mid-week and also Sunday mornings. You are welcome to all or you can choose the session that best suits. All we ask is that you are a paid up member (just $40 per year), which helps the club pay rent and insurance. It also makes you eligible for our monthly 5km handicap, run on the last Saturday of each month.
Tuesday Night Track: from 6:15pm (warm up) at the athletics track next to the Newport Power Station. Join in a variety of track interval sessions where the focus is on improving pace and stamina. Typical sessions are 8 x 400m, 5 x 800m or 3 x 1600m. Participation in these training sessions allows you to discover a new side to running and certainly provides a challenge. We run in two groups for advanced and less advanced runners and there is a wealth of advice available from some very experienced and approachable people.
Thursday Night Timeball Run: we meet at the Newport Athletics track and head off as a group at 6:30pm (note the slightly later time!) running along the shared path to the Timeball Tower and back
(7km). The group usually settles into smaller groups of similarly paced runners and some stretch the distance to 10km by turning at the Willy Football Ground. A great run with fantastic views of the bay and the city skyline and of course the occasional container ship coming up the river. Not to be missed! The track is also open for those who would prefer to do their own track work. Let us know, as there may be others interested in this option as well.
Sunday Mornings: a group meets at 8:00am at Newport Lakes for a bush run on a lap course starting at lookout point 1. If you arrive late just wait at the lookout and runners will regularly pass the starting point and you can simply join in. We run multiple laps so you can run any distance you wish, with some folk running 15km or more.
There is also a group that leaves the Old Gatehouse, at the rear of
the Newport Athletics track. Brian Armstrong leads this group, which tends to do long runs along the bike paths around the bay offering a very scenic flat run.
Sometimes on a Sunday a group will head to the You Yangs Park to do some training on the big hills.
All of these runs will be put on the Club’s Facebook Page prior to the day so that people can plan their running. Everyone is welcome to join in.
Hopefully we have something for runners of ALL abilities when it comes to training. Any of these sessions will dramatically assist your running. The social aspect of training with others and its impact on wellbeing is well known.
So, make ‘Training with the Hobos’ part of your weekly running routine.
