It sure went by fast. It was only yesterday that I was asked to be your president. It was a joyful time, and then a tragic time with the untimely death of our outgoing president Sandee Harvey. We all miss her. During my presidency we also lost three more members, Sally Jonsson, Joyce DeLeo and Christine Helen Rapp. We honor them and they are missed. But now, let’s rejoice and remember the good times at our guild. We had so many wonderful speakers. Remember the stories told by Julie Silber of America’s funniest quilts, and don’t forget the math with Lynn Wilder, or the Delightful Diva Designs of Karen Boutte’s Wonderful Whimsical Wearables. There were so many more great speakers. Our guild is truly blessed. Great speakers and wonderful workshops is not all our guild excels in. The Quilt Show we just had was fantastic. A big thank you goes to Mary Walcher and Donna Driver for organizing the show. And another cheer goes to the many, many others who worked extremely hard to put it all together. It takes a village, and we have that village. Looking back over the year, there are so many activities the guild has been involved in. We did quilting demonstrations at Alviso Adobe and helped budding beginners during Quilting in the Garden at Alden Lane. We enjoyed the silent action, the Holiday Brunch and a fun Mystery Trip. We also ate cake together to celebrate the guild’s 34 th birthday. Many of our members had an awesome time at the Retreat. Many members contributed their time and artistry to supply quilts for Community Quilts that are given to a variety of agencies. Hundreds were given to those who needed their comforts. Quilts were exhibited at the fair – Mary Walcher won best of show. Donna Karbach and her team were responsible to give away Quilts of Valor to war veterans every day of the fair, not to mention all the other presentations they made throughout the year. Thank you for representing our guild in such a meaningful way. It really has been a full year. There was so much more I could add to this list. Yes, we are a village, a family of quilters. Through the stressful times, the sad times, the happy and proud times, we have come together and triumphed. I am proud to have been your president throughout it all. Now, enough of this. Let’s get back to that quilting. Thank you all. ~ Your President (for now) Karen Parker May Guest Speakers: Instead of a regular speaker, we have invited four local quilt shops to share info about their offerings: The Cotton Patch, Lafayette Wooden Gate Quilts, Danville In Between Stitches, Livermore Ladybug’s Quilts, Manteca. May Block of the Month HERE COMES SUMMER - time for a picnic in the park. This month’s block kits will ultimately become a picnic table cover, in July 4 th colors, of course. Each kit contains fabric to make 4 “cathedral windows” mini-blocks to be sewn together and later combined with others. A very easy block kit for your very busy life. ~ Lou Anne Martin, BOM Chair

President’s Message It is amazing that my year in office is coming to an end. It sure went by fast. It was only
yesterday that I was asked to be your president. It was a joyful time, and then a tragic
time with the untimely death of our outgoing president Sandee Harvey. We all miss her.
During my presidency we also lost three more members, Sally Jonsson, Joyce DeLeo
and Christine Helen Rapp. We honor them and they are missed.
But now, let’s rejoice and remember the good times at our guild. We had so many
wonderful speakers. Remember the stories told by Julie Silber of America’s funniest
quilts, and don’t forget the math with Lynn Wilder, or the Delightful Diva Designs of
Karen Boutte’s Wonderful Whimsical Wearables. There were so many more great
speakers. Our guild is truly blessed.
Great speakers and wonderful workshops is not all our guild excels in. The Quilt Show
we just had was fantastic. A big thank you goes to Mary Walcher and Donna Driver for
organizing the show. And another cheer goes to the many, many others who worked
extremely hard to put it all together. It takes a village, and we have that village.
Looking back over the year, there are so many activities the guild has been involved in.
We did quilting demonstrations at Alviso Adobe and helped budding beginners during
Quilting in the Garden at Alden Lane. We enjoyed the silent action, the Holiday Brunch
and a fun Mystery Trip. We also ate cake together to celebrate the guild’s 34th birthday.
Many of our members had an awesome time at the Retreat. Many members contributed
their time and artistry to supply quilts for Community Quilts that are given to a variety
of agencies. Hundreds were given to those who needed their comforts. Quilts were
exhibited at the fair – Mary Walcher won best of show. Donna Karbach and her team
were responsible to give away Quilts of Valor to war veterans every day of the fair, not
to mention all the other presentations they made throughout the year. Thank you for
representing our guild in such a meaningful way.
It really has been a full year. There was so much more I could add to this list. Yes, we are a village, a family of quilters.
Through the stressful times, the sad times, the happy and proud times, we have come together and triumphed. I am proud
to have been your president throughout it all. Now, enough of this. Let’s get back to that quilting. Thank you all.
~ Your President (for now) Karen Parker
May Guest Speakers:
Instead of a regular speaker, we have invited four local quilt shops to share info about their offerings:
The Cotton Patch, Lafayette Wooden Gate Quilts, Danville
In Between Stitches, Livermore Ladybug’s Quilts, Manteca.
May Block of the Month
HERE COMES SUMMER - time for a picnic in the park. This month’s block kits will
ultimately become a picnic table cover, in July 4th colors, of course. Each kit contains fabric to
make 4 “cathedral windows” mini-blocks to be sewn together and later combined with others. A
very easy block kit for your very busy life. ~ Lou Anne Martin, BOM Chair

Workshops June: Vicki Johnson www.vntgraphics.com
Easy Fabric Printing - Using
fabric paint that is water-based and
nontoxic, this class will explore
many simple methods for painting
fabric, including scrunching, Saran
wrap printing, stenciling, block
printing, vegetable printing, leaf
printing, found object printing,
fabric crayons, and mono-printing.
Bring your fat quarters, a potato and
come play!!!! ($7.00 materials fee)
July: Marion Coleman www.marioncoleman.com
Quilting Your Story: History
in Fabric - Use photographs
and memorabilia to create a
quilt that tells your unique
story. Learn various
techniques for transfers on
Inkjet printers using elementary
PhotoShop. A great opportunity
to learn this special technique!
August: Denise Oyama Miller www.deniseoyamamiller.com
Broken Color - In this workshop, you will learn how to
make a beautiful wall quilt in the “Broken Color” technique,
where each piece of fabric in the quilt top is surrounded by
a thin line of color. This approach makes the colors “pop”
off the surface of the quilt. The appliqué is done with a
raw-edge approach. This technique is fun, easy to do for
beginners and advanced quilters, and can be learned in a
day.
September: Nancy Ota www.nancyota.com
Sashiko - Spend a day with this talented award-winning
quilter and learn Sashiko, a gorgeous hand embroidery
technique that can be used in quilts and garments. And you
don’t need to tote a machine to class!
October: Annie Smith www.simplearts.com
Stashbusters - On Saturday, Annie will gently help us
laugh at our tendency to build monstrous stashes – so, come
to workshop on Sunday and learn lots of technique for using
your stash. Annie will inspire you to create simple but
beautiful quilts from what may have been yesterday’s
leftovers.
Workshops are only $45 for guild members – a bargain compared to classes offered at quilt shops, shows and
Retreats. Check out class samples at the Workshop table at the monthly meetings. Click on the links for the
speakers’ websites above to get more info on their background.
Committee Chairs Needed The Program I position for 2016-2017 is open beginning in June - and it is a LOT OF FUN ! Choose speakers and
workshops, and meet the leading teachers in the region and beyond. Indulge your desire to learn all those new
things! You spend a whole year choosing and contracting.... then the second year of this position will involve hosting the
speakers as they come to present and teach! There are several AVQ members available to assist you as you learn the
'ropes', and there are easy venues where you can learn about available speakers and teachers. Templates for contract and
budget planning are ready for you to use. If you have questions, email me - if you're ready to volunteer, let our new
President know of your interest. ~ Kathleen Rountree, Program I (2014-15)
Librarian needed: The Library is your wonderful AVQ resource. There are over 500 books, 2-3 checkout ladies, many
box sitters, back door parking, a generous book budget, and carts for toting those books. The only missing item is a
Librarian! This is YOUR opportunity to become the next Library committee chair beginning now. It would be
unfortunate for the guild to place the library in our storage beginning at the end of the May meeting. Please contact me
ASAP to volunteer for this committee position. ~ Mary Ann Soby
Other Open Committee Chairs: Community Quilts - Parliamentarian - Publicity
