A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

IT gives me great pleasure to welcome you to this new edition of our newsletter. Itisthefirstissuesinceour last election March of this year. We have elected a new Board which is endorsed by the Ministry of Social Development.

A number of issues were raised in the last General Assembly and I am pleased to say that we took positive steps to address them. We also had a meeting with the heads of our branches and agreed on a number of strategic issues that will pave the way to achieve our missions and visions nationally. I am happy to say that we have seen a rise in the number of volunteers. We still need more volunteers to achieve our Association’s missions, goals and objectives. The basic palliative care course for nurses in February of this year was very successful as it highlighted the need of palliative care for our patients. The ministry of health is now working in tandem with our association to achieve this objective. A number of activities were held at Dar AlHanan and with the children especially at the Royal Hospital. The

mobile mammography unit completed another trip outside the capital providing clinical breast examination and community awareness.We plan to mark the Association’s Tenth Anniversary by organising a fund raising dinner on December 3 at the Grand Hyatt. On October 16, we will have our Annual Walkathon at Midan AlFatah. InthefirsttwoweeksofOctober,Wewill organise community activities at our headquarters in Al Azaiba and awareness activities in major malls. I will like to sign off by thanking everyone, especially our volunteers, sponsors and staff, for their efforts and support of which this Association depends on. Our doors are open to each and everyone.

children’s needs and their welfare

KARANKA SHOW AT DAR AL HANAN

To celebrate the Karanka Show, Dar Al Hanan hosted children and distributed toys and gifts to mark the occasion. The event was in conjunction with Oman Modern College. The Karanka Show is a tradition in Oman which is celebrated every year when communities get

together across the country to entertain children. Many years ago, people gathered in town squares or in the courts of forts to celebrate the occasion. But now, shopping malls also stage their own events and give away gifts to children. It has become a very popular annual occasion widely covered by the local media.

Clinical Breast Examination At NACA Headquarters

What is breast cancer? It is an abnormal growth of cells, forming an abnormal lesion in the breast.

Who gets breast cancer?These are the risk factors breast cancer:o Personal history of breast cancero Women over the age of 50o Familyhistoryofbreastcancerespeciallyinfirstdegreerelativeso Beginning your menstrual cycle at an early ageo Going through menopause at a late stageo Having no childreno Havingyourfirstpregnancyaftertheageof30o Being overweighto Excessive consumption of alcohol

What do I look out for?o A lump or thickening anywhere in the breasto Skin dimpling or puckering of the breasto A nipple that is pushed in (inverted), and hasn’t always been that wayo Discharge from the nipple that’s comes out by itself, staining your clothingo Any change in the shape, texture, or color of the skin.

What should I do to detect these signs?o Do self-examination of the breast every month after the menstrual cycle.o If you are over 40 , you should have regular mammogram exams every 2 years

Updates on Cancer

Cancer is a leading cause of death worldwide and the total number of cases globally is

increasing.

The number of global cancer deaths is projected to increase 45% from 2007 to 2030 (from 7.9 million to 11.5 million deaths), influencedinpartbyanincreasingandag-ing global population. The estimated rise takes into account expected slight declines in death rates for some cancers in high resource countries. New cases of cancer in the same period are estimated to jump from 11.3 million in 2007 to 15.5 million in 2030.In most developed countries, cancer is the second largest cause of death after car-diovascular disease, and epidemiological evidence points to this trend emerging in the less developed world. Already more than half of all cancer cases occur in developing countries.Lung cancer kills more people than any other cancer - a trend that is expected to continue until 2030, unless efforts for global tobaccocontrolaregreatlyintensified.Some cancers are more common in devel-oped countries: prostate, breast and colon. Liver, stomach and cervical cancer are more common in developing countries.A number of common risk factors have been linked to the development of cancer: an unhealthy lifestyle or environmental car-cinogens, (indoor air pollution), radiation (ul-traviolet and ionizing radiation), and some infections (such as hepatitis B or human papilloma virus infection).

Mammography benefits outweigh harms

The first comprehensive review of European breast screening programs has found that the benefits of mammography clearly outweigh the

harms.The teams analyzed data from about 12 million women collected from 26 screening programs

in 18 countries from 2001 to 2007.The review authors conclude that European population-based mammography programs are contributing to the reduction in breast cancer mortality (deaths) in the European

Union and are achieving a mortality benefit at least as great as that seen in randomized

clinical trials.Furthermore, the estimated number of breast cancer deaths avoided by screening clearly exceeds the estimated number of cases of

over-diagnosis,” they conclude.The authors estimate that for every 1000

women who undergo screening every 2 years from the age of 50 to 68 or 69 years, 7 to 9

lives would be saved and 4 women would be over-diagnosed.

NACA HOLDS MEETING FOR 2012 MUSCAT WALKATHONThe theme of this year’s walkathon

“BEAT YOUR FEET FOR CANCER DEFEAT”

This will be NACA’s 9th year since

itstarteditsfirstannualwalkathon

whose objectives is to raise

awareness to combat cancer and

early detection of this devastating

disease that claims millions of lives

worldwide.

The volunteers and the NACA

steering committee will join hundreds

of members of the public to raise

funds mainly from the sponsors.

The walk will cover a 3-km stretch

from its starting point in Midan Al-

Fatah in Watteya, as part of the

national and global campaign for the

prevention of cancer and treatment

of sufferers. The idea is to create a

festive networking event that will also

remind those who attended to have

excellent memories of the walkathon. Part

of the funds will go to maintain the mobile

mammography unit, which provides free

screening services to all, across the

Sultanate. The rest of the funds raised

from the Walk will go to Dar Al Hanan on

its children initiative those who reside

outside the capital by offering them

accommodation and full board while they

are in Muscat receiving treatment in the

government hospitals. Dar Al Hanan also

offers counselling and cancer awareness

and education facilities for children and

their families.

وقدأثيرعددمنالقضايافياجلمعيةالعامةاألخيرةويسرني

أنأقولإننااتخذناخطواتإيجابيةللتعاملمعها.كما

كانلدينالقاءمعرؤساءالفروعووافقناعلىعددمنالقضايا

اإلستراتيجيةالتيمنشأنهاأنمتهدالطريقلتحقيقرسالتناورؤانا

علىاملستوىالوطني.ويسعدنيأنأقولإنناقدشهدنا

ارتفاًعافيعدداملتطوعني،لكننامازلنابحاجةإلىاملزيد

مناملتطوعنيلتحقيقرسالتناوأهدافنا.وقدجنحبرنامجالرعايةامللطفةاألساسيةللممرضاتفيفبرايرمنهذاالعامبشكل

كبيرألنهسلطالضوءعلىاحلاجةللرعايةامللطفةملرضانا.وتعمل

وزارةالصحةحالًياجنباإلىجنبمعجمعيتنالتحقيقهذاالهدف.

كماُعقدعددمناألنشطةفيداراحلنانومعاألطفال،والسيما

فياملستشفىالسلطاني.وأنهتالوحدةاملتنقلةألشعةالثدي

رحلةأخرىخارجالعاصمةقدمتمنخاللهافحًصاإكلينيكًاالثدي

وتوعيةمجتمعية.وفيإطاراالحتفالبالذكرىالسنويةالعاشرةللجمعيةنخططلتنظيمعشاءجلمعاألمواليوم3ديسمبر

املقبلفيفندقجراندحياة.وفي16أكتوبر،سننظمسباق

املشيالسنويفيميدانالفتح.وفيأولأسبوعنيمنأكتوبر،سننظم

أنشطةمجتمعيةفيمقرناالرئيسيفيالعذيبةوأنشطةتوعية

فياملراكزالتجاريةالكبرى.وأودأنأنهيكلمتيبتوجيهالشكرللجميع،وخاصةاملتطوعنيواجلهاتالراعيةواملوظفني،ملابذلوهمنجهود

ودعملهذهاجلمعية.كماأؤكدأنأبوابنامفتوحةللجميع.
