losing a thrilling semi-final to North Sydney. Both teams did our Club great credit. While the always popular Mufti Pairs Competition got underway, it was preceded each Friday by well attended training sessions which should put Mosman in good shape for the upcoming Pennants season. Unfortunately we lost two Saturdays and half a Wednesday due to inclement weather conditions, but the well-being of our members will always be our first consideration when deciding whether to play or not. Rain also put paid to the completion of the annual MBC women vs. men pennant players joust, with just 13 ends completed. While there was a 5 shot variance on the "big board", the match was declared a draw. The highlight of March is the commencement of the pennant season - Mosman again has teams contesting grades 4, 6 & 7 and we wish all pennant bowlers success. Our selection panel remains unchanged, and I would like to thank Brian Spear (Chairman), Bruce Bodinnar, John Rock and Scott Denham for their contribution and leadership again this year.

oth our greens have now been returned following their annual renovation, and in perfect condition! With them comes our new reticulation system which has already proved to be very effective, and ultimately cost-effective. Mosman greens are the envy of many in our Zone, and full kudos to our greenkeepers, Scott & Snowy. February was a very busy bowling month, with the Men's Fours Championship run and won by the team comprising Peter Smith (his second big win for the year!) Andrew Woodmansey, Snowy Kable and Scott Denham in a close, high standard game against Brian Spear's team. The Minor Singles title was taken out by our relatively new member but old friend, Brian Roelofsen over John Dale who was a worthy runner-up. Mosman had 2 teams entered in the Zone 9 Men's Fours Championship, with John Rock's team winning their 1st Round game in the President's Reserve section before a narrow loss to Belrose. Kandiah Siva's Seniors team won their first 2 Rounds against very strong teams from Dee Why and Asquith, before

The annual Waterman Trophy also gets under way this month, with 9 Zone 9 Clubs accepting our invitation to participate. As the Waterman provides invaluable competition experience, player selection will be primarily from those committed to playing Pennants. Congratulations to Brian Spear who has been selected in the Zone 9 team to contest trial games against Zone 5 this month. This is a huge honour for Brian, and a great credit to our Club. A new initiative created by our Membership Committee, the Mosman Business Bowls Challenge, will be played on Friday afternoon, March 3rd. Many Mosman businesses have been invited to participate, and the initial response has been keen. Hopefully this will have the success it deserves and becomes an annual event. Sunday Live Jazz is another new initiative which was launched last month. We have committed to trialling 3 sessions, each held on the first Sunday of each month. Despite intense heat that day, the first event was a good start, and I am sure numbers will grow each month. Our thanks to Bev and Harry Evans for championing this, and to the Club volunteers who helped out on the day.

I was delighted to hand over the proceeds of the Wrong Bias Jar ($1000) to Roger Williams, Chairman of Mary's House, a r e c e n t l y e s t a b l i s h e d b u t unfortunately very much in-demand refuge for women and children. I have always tried to pass our donation to a local charity, and after listening to Roger's startling response outlining the abuse statistics in our area, I have no doubt they are a most worthy recipient. So, lots going on at the Mosman Bowling Club and I urge all members to regularly check o u r w e b s i t e mosmanbowlingclub.org.au to keep up with all the Club news as it happens!

Following was in SMH Column 8 on Saturday 11/2 from Chris Wallace of Kingscliff. Quote: "Further to Alleyne Gray's concern about her husband and his doctor (C8), in 2002 following a heart attack the recovery notes said I could resume sexual activity with my usual partner after five weeks but not play lawn bowls until after 10 weeks. Makes you wonder what those bowlers get up to."

Thank you also, to our Selection Committee. They have worked very hard to get the best Pennant teams possible and it is a very difficult job which they do so well. Four teams entered the District Fours which was a great effort. Unfortunately none of them got beyond the first round but it was a good wake up call as to what we might come up against in Pennants. Some of the teams played excellent bowls but were pipped at the post despite their efforts. In the lead up to Pennants teams have been out and about visiting various club carnivals. The team of Denise Owen, Sue Addison, Jenny Hole and Julie Hayden won the overall prize at Harbord on 27th. There was a fierce battle against the men’s pennant teams on the 28th but wet weather precluded a final result. This match will now go into the annual calendar. Drinks and nibbles afterwards made a fun afternoon and team bonding all round. The Major Singles are now down to the finals with Diana Noel and Denise Owen playing on Wednesday 8th March to determine the winner.

t’s an exciting time in the lead up to Pennants with our three teams training hard and getting ready to play. Congratulations to everyone who put their hands up to play and act as reserves, and most importantly go out and have fun. Lots of smiles will throw the opposition and make Mosman winners. Play commences on 14th March and it’s always good to have an audience at the local games. The schedule of games at Mosman is on the club website so if you have some time pop along and support your team. We could do with some help in acting as controlling body and setting up morning teas, so if you are able to help, please contact De Brown. We also have a team entered in the Saturday Triples Regional Challenge which is designed for players who are unable to compete during the week. Good luck to the team, you will come up against some good weekend bowlers. Thanks to Corinne Crouche, Jeff Hole and Ailsa Maccallum for assisting us with training again this year. They have provided some great motivation and strategy as well as helping hone our bowling skills, and we hope to do the club proud.

Good luck to both players and congratulations to all who entered what is our most prestigious event.

Thirty two of us got together at Mosman RSL recently to celebrate Ailsa Maccallum’s special birthday. It was wonderful to see Mona Fielden, Jan Park and Carmen Driscoll in attendance. They have promised to be back on the green as soon as the heat subsides and it stops raining! The Committee met on Tuesday 28th February. We have received a new extreme weather policy from Bowls NSW which incorporates both temperature and humidity and the club has bought a humidity recorder to ensure we have all the right equipment to determine when

play should stop for drinks or cease altogether. We have also been advised by Women's Bowls NSW that from the middle of the year we will be paying a fixed fee to head office rather than one based on membership numbers. The men already have this system and it does not appear to be an issue. Because we are no longer playing bowls on a Tuesday, when we traditionally celebrate the women’s club birthday, we are investigating having a lunch instead. Details will follow once they are finalised but the date is Tuesday 2nd May which you may want to place in your diary.

A Hot day but Cool Jazz

We did not foresee an oppressively hot day, nor that Mosman Council would dig up the footpath and tape off our Club entrance when we booked the band for this concert, but

nevertheless a modest audience turned up for the first of our 2017 Series of Jazz Sundays. Paul Furniss and Friends entertained us for two hours with some wonderful old Classic Jazz Standards. The friends, Harry Sutherland, a young local pianist with a t r e m e n d o u s future, Chuck Morgan on acoustic guitar and David Seidel on double bass, were full of praise for the venue and its' acoustics. After an hour there was a brief intermission for the band to enjoy refreshments and to mingle with the 50/50 mix of Club Members and “outsiders,” the latter of whom showed genuine interest in our Club. The boys returned to the stage for a second hour of music which finished all too soon for many of us. March 5th will see the Geoff Power Quartet perform at 2 pm. Details of the group were contained on the back page of the February Newsletter. Geoff, as the bandleader, will present a different style of Jazz with his cornet and trumpet featuring. Another great Jazz afternoon is assured. Be there and enjoy.

Everyone who heard Mary's House Chairman Roger William's presentation at afternoon tea last month could not help but be assured it was an excellent choice to receive the proceeds ($1000) of our Wrong Bias Jar. Mary's House is a refuge for women and children who have suffered from domestic abuse, and is one of the few such refuges on

the North Shore. Mary's House receives no government financial support, so our donation was very well received. The domestic abuse statistics quoted by Roger were startling, and anyone wanting more information on Mary's House should read the brochures he left in the Club.

Law Clarification – New Bowl Design

(removal of rings)

At the recent World Bowls Biennial Council Meeting the proposed law changes from World Bowls’ Laws Committee was passed.

The law change has now seen the requirement of the large groove rings on the non-bias side removed. These changes will now allow for manufacturers to customise the size of distinguishing marks on the non-bias side of the bowl.

It is important to note that these law changes do not have an effect on how the game is played, nor does it affect the bias of the bowl.

These Law changes are immediately introduced by WB, and will come into effect as of 1st January.

Zone 9 Umpires Committee (Male)

The following Changes have been made to the 2017-18 Conditions of Play that may affect Pennant Matches and/or Association Events.

A MAJOR sporting challenge has been issued to Mosman business people and it’s going to be tough. The Mosman Bowling Club is giving everyone from tradies to shop assistants a chance to bowl the competition over. The club is staging the inaugural Mosman Business Bowls Challenge on March 3. Competing teams which have already signed up include plumbers, osteopaths, real estate agents and local car dealers.

“It’s an opportunity for local business people to have some friendly competition and social interaction,” said membership director Paul Ward-Harvey. “The good thing about lawn bowls is its competitive spirit, without being cutthroat, and you don’t need to be an athlete.” Club president Stephen Lewis said the club had hosted many competitions and corporate events in its 115-year history. “But we cannot recall how long it has been since we have extended an invitation such as this to the whole Mosman business community,” he said. The club is inviting teams of three to sign up for the c o m p e t i t i o n w h i c h includes a sausage sizzle, with drinks available at club prices. Competitors are asked to wear flat-soled shoes. The winning team will receive $250 for their favourite charity. Entry is $25 a team. To enter email: [email protected] or telephone 9969 5198

Businesses get bowl rolling

(article appearing in the Mosman Daily Thursday, February 16, 2017)

Mosman businesses are getting ready for a bowling challenge.

With Pennants about to start it is probably worth stating a few simple and perhaps obvious things to think about for each position in the team.

Leads. It is important to give your team a good start. The best leads can deliver one bowl on the jack and one bowl just behind.

Resist the temptation to niggle at your opposition lead’s good bowl if it is on the jack. Just try to get the best second shot. Your job is to start to build the head in your team’s favour.

Seconds. Seconds should avoid being short. If your lead does not have shot and you are short you are obstructing your team’s third and skip as they try to correct the situation.

If your lead has good bowls on the jack then it is likely your opposition will try to change the head with a small amount of weight so you need to be just behind jack. Remember you are building the head also.

Thirds Here is where tactics come in and position bowls are important. Communication with your skip is essential.

If you can see a better shot say so. However after discussion abide by the skips final decision. And if you are asked to play a shot you don’t particularly like, concentrate even harder.

Skips You need to make sure your players on the mat understand the shot they are asked to play. Communicate clearly both verbally and with actions. Don’t just talk to the bowls in the head.

The draw is usually your best weapon. So if you are in doubt between the draw and any other shot after evaluation of the risks and rewards, go for the draw.

All players. Work as a team. Celebrate good shots. Encourage team-mates who are struggling. And enjoy the experience. Take time to practice on your own. And practice the shots you have difficulties with. Be careful you don’t reinforce your faults. If you are unsure of how to correct a problem ask a coach for help. At Mosman we are well served with trained coaches.

GOOD LUCK TO ALL OUR PENNANTS TEAMS!!! LETS BRING BACK SOME FLAGS!!
