The Badminton “Come and Try” Session on 27 April 2012 has been a terrific success.

All three courts were busy with some of the participants having a hit for the first time

and enjoying it big-time. The subsequent session also had a good number of

participants attend and we are looking forward to a very enjoyable first term. The free

social badminton sessions for this school term have been provided by Wimmera

Regional Sports Assembly towards helping new arrivals and migrants ease into the

sports culture prevalent in the region. A fourth court will be provided for kids from

this week onwards. Sessions are provided every Friday between 6-8 pm at the

Horsham Primary School, 298 Campus. If you would like to play or mentor, please

contact us on [email protected] or 0412654483.

A special thanks to Alex Thomson, Wimmera Regional Sports Assembly for his wonderful

support and contribution towards this program

The art of Rangoli

Rangoli is a folk art from

India. They are decorative

designs made on the floors

of living rooms and

courtyards during Hindu

festivals.

They are meant to be sacred

welcoming areas for the

Hindu deities. The ancient

symbols have been passed on

through the ages, from each

generation to the next, thus

keeping both the art form and

the tradition alive.

The patterns are typically

created with materials,

including colored rice, dry

flour,(colored) sand or even

flower petals. Rangoli and

similar practices are often

followed in different Indian

states.

From 2012, the Victorian Multicultural Commission (VMC) has established eight Regional

Advisory Councils across the state. These councils will advise the VMC on local multicultural

issues; advocate on their behalf; advise on communication, engagement and consultation with

CALD communities and assist the VMC to promote the benefits of diversity.

Sujatha Umakanthan from Oasis Wimmera has been appointed to the Grampians Regional

Advisory Council for a two year term. She will serve as your local spokesperson for any

multicultural issues you might come across within the region and raise it with Grampians

RAC. You can contact Sujatha on 0412654483.

Meet Richard Newby from the United Kingdom.

Richard was one of our first members and has been a steady supporter

of Oasis Wimmera. He has been instrumental towards starting our

poetry club, the Wimmera Poetry Lovers.

Richard has always contributed to our events by introducing various

board games to the group. He is very creative in bringing ideas to the

group and we have largely benefited from some of his ideas. The

Natimuk fishing event and the hiking trip were his suggestions. He

has also recently given the idea for an Oasis travel club.

Oasis members to meet casually on Saturdays at May park between 12 and 1 pm near the

playground for children play and adults chat. If you are free and the weather is good,

see you there !!!!
