If books are the treasure vault of knowledge, then a library must be a

stream of wisdom.

After a year of construction, our school library has abandoned Calder

Path and moved to the 5th floor of the MR campus. Although the library is

dressed in white, it is nicely backed by the traditional red-bricks wall. This

new home provides 8 tables and 80 chairs for students to do revision and

homework in the main hall, while teachers and students are able to make

use of the four project study rooms for group discussions; the soft colour

tone created by the lighting is relaxing. 20 library computers with

well-equipped computer systems are ready to lend a helping hand to

students in handling school projects.

A wide range of newspaper, magazines, interesting fiction and CDs offer

comprehensive choices to you to while away your leisure time. Reference

books and materials are prepared for students to flick through and read

in this new environment. Besides, the library has also set up a literature

column section and IB column section where students can search for

useful information and exercise preparing for their exams.

Borrowing & Returning

The student ID card also serves as the library card that you will be asked

to show when borrowing different items in the library. SPCC students

and teachers are always welcome to borrow books, audio-visual

materials and magazines and take them home to enjoy reading. DSE past

papers, IB reference materials and reference books are provided for

students to read in their second home— the SPCC library! Students are

able to borrow up to 5 items at a time and should return the items

within 14 days. Excluding non-school days, a $1 fine will be incurred for

This book basically talks about formulas, mainly in numbers, money

and week algorithm. In this book, I found some formulas are quite rare

and interesting, for example, in the chapter “Numbers, pizza slices and

alien interpreters” one of the formulas is about the pieces of pizza being

cut: [2/c(c+3)]+1

Some chapters are challenging, e.g.

“can you feel the force?” While some of the

chapters are easily to be understood, e.g.

Money!

Although the book is thick and it is about

mathematics, it isn’t boring at all! With all

the funny, wacky pictures and given real-life

examples in this book, you will never doze

off when reading! This book is suitable for

form one students and I bet you will find

math is not murderous anymore! Therefore

I recommend this book to all of you!

I was astonished by how the formulas in

this book suggested a lot of short-cuts on solving math problems, such as

the area of a parallelogram, and profit margin in percentage.

Furthermore, I was amazed by the writing style of the author. At first,

I thought math books are dull and boring, but after reading this, I found

out that: Math isn’t boring and murderous! The author uses simple and

easy language to demonstrate the ideas to me. Some parts are very

funny that made me cracked out!

I must say that the pictures in this book are stunning. They definitely

The Book Reviews

Page 16: Newsletter -- May 2013

provide me with a better platform to learn math in a simple way.

One of the most important parts of the book is the author showing you

how to tackle the toughest sums without using a calculator!

All in all, This book has increased my exposure to mathematics; I

really want to know more about other tricks in calculating! After reading

this book, I think the title of the book should not called “murderous

math” it should be called “interesting math” as I found math is no longer

murderous anymore!

Page 18: Newsletter -- May 2013

Page 19: Newsletter -- May 2013

The story started when Mikael Blomkist,

who was a journalist for Millennium

magazine, being tricked by Wennerstorm.

After getting a job offer by Henrik Vanger

to investigate a murder thirty years ago, he

moved to Hadestead and found some leads

that the police had missed out so he went

to investigate them. Surprisingly, he found

a skilled researcher, Lisbeth Salander, who

is also a hacker. Together they found a

serial killer behind all these murders. They

also dug around for information, and

Millennium beat Wennerstorm down by

proving to everyone that he is a sex crime

offender.

This story is truely a piece of work. Overall, it is an interesting

detective story. The details are all stated; we could follow the logic and

also guess what others are thinking. It was a reasonable ending, and I’d

say the events are tightly chained together, creating a tense and exciting,

nail-biting atmosphere. The Millennium series showed us an insight into

the dark side of society. People who look friendly, they might not turn

out as who you think they are. People who everyone thinks are nice and

honest, but they actually harm helpless victims. The harmless victims

who strive to protect themselves from evil people, but are considered as

a liability. People who harm others mercilessly, but because of their act,

they get to get away with it and they get to pin the blame on their

victims. It is unfair, but sadly this is the truth.

To sum up, this book is an entertaining read, and I couldn’t help but

feel sorry for people like Lisbeth Salander. Somehow I do agree that she

is too cold-blooded. Anyhow, I would say this book is definitely worth

reading.

Page 21: Newsletter -- May 2013

This year is, with no doubt whatsoever, a year of change. Not only has the

location of the library changed, but also a new teacher librarian is with us. As a

result, I think that this will be an extraordinarily interesting year.

The opening of the new library is a dream comes true. Without a doubt, the new

library is even more welcoming to students and has become one of the most popular

places for students to spend their free time with its elegance and simplicity. The

updated hardware has definitely instilled an even greater drive in me and the

library team to serve all of you.

Apart from the new library, we are delighted to have introduced various new

services like online renewing. An author’s visit was also held in February, which has

certainly inspired many of the junior form students.

Looking ahead, the library held the annual Book Week in April. This school-

wide event not only aims to bring enjoyment to students, but also to promote

reading in the school. Furthermore, we will be rolling out a revamped library webpage

in the following months.

At this point, I must thank all the librarians who have worked so hard over the

previous months and I wish all of you a fruitful and enjoyable year ahead.
