Vijayakumar, Director, International Relations undertook a tour to Indonesia from 23 to 29 July, 2013. He participated in the World Educate Business Associate (WEBA) event held on 27 and 28 July in Jakarta. He visited: • University of Pancasila on 24 July and held discussions with the Vice- Rector, the Dean of Technology and his team. They were interested in collaborating with VIT University in capacity building of their faculty and student exchange programs. The Rector intends visiting VIT shortly to sign up a Memorandum of Understanding. Dear friends, Greetings! In this issue of the IR Newsletter, we present the activities of July and August, 2013. Director, International Relations attends WEBA event in Indonesia: Dr. C. Vijayakumar, Director, International Relations undertook a tour to

The arrival of yet another batch of students from China has added to the
number of International students on campus. Alongside this, there were

• Binus University on 25 July. He met the Vice-Rector-co-operation and Director, In-
ternational Relations and her team. They identified four areas of co-operation with
VIT University: Faculty exchange, Capacity building of their faculty, Student exchange
and Twinning programs.
• University of Indonesia , on 26 July. He had a meeting with the Director, Interna-
tional Exchange and he stated that they were interested in sending their faculty to
attend International Conferences in VIT.

B.Tech. Civil Engineering attended the 4th International
Conference of Euro Asia Civil Engineering Forum
(EACEF’13) held at National University of Singapore
(NUS) from 26-28 June 2013.
They presented a paper titled “Performance Evaluation of Kolar Drinking Water
Treatment Plant of Bhopal City.”
International Conference at Helsinki, Finland: Ms. Vijayalakshmi Saravanan, Assistant Professor
(Senior), School of Information Technology and Engi-
neering, presented her Ph.D dissertation work titled
“Power-Performance of Multi-threaded Multi-Core
Processor: Analysis, Optimization and Simulation”
at the 2013 International Conference on High Perform-
ance Computing & Simulation (HPCS 2013) Doctoral
Dissertation Colloquium held in Helsinki, Finland July1-
5, 2013.
She is currently a visiting researcher at Ryerson Univer-
sity in Canada.

International Conference at Ghana:
• Prof. Dr. R. Seenivasan, Assistant Director, International Rela-
tions, was invited as fully sponsored delegate from India by the Fo-
rum for Agricultural Research in Africa (FARA) to attend the 6th Af-
rica Agriculture Science Week (AASW) and FARA General Assembly
Business Meeting held during 13-22 July 2013 at Accra at Ghana in
West Africa.
He had delivered a keynote speech during this event and met several
renowned agricultural scientists from various countries to formu-
late future strategies for African agriculture research and develop-
ment.
VIT Faculty’s visits Abroad:
• Dr. D. Rajan Babu, Professor, Department of Physics, School of Advanced Sciences, was invited
to the Research Institute of Electronics, Shizuoka University, Hamamatsu, Japan as
‘Visiting Professor’ from 01 June to 31 August 2013. Shizuoka University is a national university
in Japan.
He made a presentation to the research group of this institute
about the research facilities available in VIT, research pro
gress in our lab and the plan of his visit. During this period,
he gained hands- on experience in the use of sophisticated
instruments such as FESEM and TEM. He held discussions
with Prof. Hayakawa, Head of the research group on the fea
sibility of starting an Indo-Japan project and collaborating
with VIT University.
He also attended the “Asia Pacific Conference on Green
Technology with Silicides and Related Materials (APAC- SILI
CIDES 2013)” , an International Conference held from the 27-
29, July 2013 at the University of Tsukuba, Japan. This
helped him to gain new insights on research.
• Dr. Sudipto Bhattacharya, Associate Professor, VIT Busi-
ness School was invited by Asian Productivity Organization
(APO), Tokyo as a National Expert from India and has been
assigned to take up a research for the APO titled, “Research
on Entrepreneurship initiatives in APO Economies.”
He attended the co-ordination meeting scheduled at Cam
bodia-Japan Coordination Centre (CJCC) at Phnom Penh,
Cambodia during 21-23 August, 2013.

Special lectures by Faculty from Universities Abroad: (Chennai campus)
• Dr Christian Langen, University of Karlsruhe, Germany visited
the University on 20 August, 2013. He delivered a guest Lecture
on “ Image Processing using WAVELET”.
Summer School at Leibniz University, Hannover, Germany: The International Summer School on “Research and Sustainability” was
jointly organised by VIT University and Leibniz Universität Hannover during
15-30 June 2013 at Hannover, Germany. There were 15 Post Graduate stu-
dents from SBST who attended this event under ongoing VIT-LUH student
exchange programme.
Prof.Dr.Hans Jorg Jacobsen, Head, Dr.Fathi Hassan, Scientist, Institute of
Plant Genetics and Dr.Balasubramanian Ramani, Co-ordinator, India and
South Asia Region, International Office, Leibniz University and Dr. R. Seeniva-
san, Assistant Director, International Relations co-ordinated this International
programme.
Special lectures by Faculty from Universities Abroad: (Vellore campus) • Prof. T Dhanasekaran, Director, W.M. Keck Nanostructures Laboratory, University of Mas-
sachusetts, Amherst, USA, visited the Centre of Excellence in Nano Composites, SMBS, on
13th August, 2013, and delivered a guest lecture on “Nano structures and composites”. He
also interacted with the faculty members regarding collaborative work.
The visit and lecture were arranged by Prof. K. Padmanabhan.

“LA VIE Culturelle En France” visit VIT Chennai :
The principal goal of this cross-cultural training session was to pro-
vide the students with necessary information about the cultural
aspects which included both business as well as day-to-day life, in
France.
This session provided the students an insight into the cultural pro-
file of France, highlighting the similarities and differences between
the the Indian and French cultures. Discussions on the influence of factors that affect family, busi-
ness and personal relationships followed. The session on the whole was highly informative and en-
riching.

Student Internships Abroad: (Vellore campus) Itika Gupta at Queen Mary University of London:
• Ms. Itika Gupta, of fourth year student from B.Tech. IT, recently visited Queen Mary,
University of London from 20th June to 03rd August 2013, to collaborate with Dr. Virginia Fernandez
and Dr. Tomas Piatrik from Multimedia and Vision Research Group (MMV) under the guidance of Prof.
Ebroul Izquierdo (MMV) and Dr. Krishna Chandramouli (VIT University).
During her visit, she developed a framework for addressing MediaEval 2013 challenge Social Event
Detection. The task required the participants to discover social events and organize the related media
items in event specific clusters, within a collection of web multimedia.
In addition she also contributed towards LACNEM 2013 Conference,
by obtaining feedback from Dr. Qianni Zhang, which will be presented in
Manizeles, Columbia.
In a continuation of the current work, Prof. Izquierdo has offered to
host Ms. Itika Gupta again, towards fulfilling her final year project.
Saurabh Narang at The University of Queensland, Australia: • Mr. Saurabh Narang, currently a final year student from B.Tech. Electronics and Instrumentation
Engineering, School of Electrical Engineering was selected for a Project entitled “Computer Simula-
tion of NMR Signal Evolution between J-coupled Spins in an Adiabatic RF field to see the response” .
He worked under the guidance of Dr. Yas Tesiram. In this project theoretically characterize the evo-
lution of coupled spins during application of low power adiabatic RF
pulses.
He was awarded a CERTIFICATE OF RECOGNITION for successful
completion of Research Program by the UQ, Australia. He received a
Scholarship for being selected as a Winter Research Scholar. Only
two International Students from the World were offered this privil
ege and Saurabh Narang was one of them.
He was selected by the Centre for Advanced Imaging at The University
of Queensland, Australia awarded by VIT University, Vellore.

Student Internships Abroad: (Chennai Campus) • Mr. Tanmay Sinha (10BCE1114) attended an internship programme at
the Language Technologies Institute (LTI) at Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburgh, USA.
He worked on a project titled “Social network analysis of Massive Open Online Courses (MOOC's)”. • Mr. Tejaswi Agarwal (10BCE1105) attended an internship programme
at Schulich School of Engineering, Department of Computer Science, Uni-
versity of Calgary, Alberta, Canada.
He worked on a project titled “Multi-core Systems and Performance
Monitoring on Servers”.
• Mr. Tanmay Sinha, Mr.Anshul Saravgi, Mr. VRNS Srikanth and Mr. Ankit Banka attended an internship programme on ‘Cloud Computing’ in the Faculty of Com puter Science and Engineering, Dongseo University, South Korea .
• Mr. Abhishek Anand (10BME1002), Mr. Sohit Chhabra ( 10BME1094) and Mr. Pankaj
Gaikwad (10BCE1034), were chosen to pursue an internship at Dublin City University,
Ireland.
Mr. Abhishek worked on a topic entitled “Low energy plasma spray of free standing
Hydroxyapetite Scaffolds” and Mr. Sohit Chhabra on “Reverse supply Chain management”
in the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering.
Mr. Pankaj Gaikwad on the topic entitled “Computer Vision and Artificial Intelligence” in
the Faculty of Computing Sciences.

A Hearty Welcome to Students on short-term programmes: • University of Malaya, Malaysia:
10 Students from University of Malaya, Malaysia spend 45
days in the School of Social Sciences and Languages for the
Internship program in Tamil Language and Literarture.
Dr.K.Tammilselvan designed the training schedule and exe-
cuted it with the support of Faculty from our University, Re-
search Scholars and Field experts from Other Universities
and Colleges. Apart from lectures the students visited places
of Historical importance related to their study across Tamil-
nadu. The students performed very well throughout the
training and scored high in the evaluation tests. Dr. K. Sathiyanarayanan, Dean SSL monitored the
entire program frequently and interacted with the students. • University of Electronic Science and Technology of China (UESTC), Chengdu, China: 20 students and one faculty from the School of Software and
Information Technology , UESTC, China spent 45 days on an
Internship program in our University. Prof. C.Srimathi and
Prof.N.Suresh Kumar of the School Computer Science and En-
gineering and Prof.G.Anburaj of the School of Social Sciences
and Languages designed and executed the training. The in-
ternship program included Lectures, Industrial visits, Mini Pro-
ject, Language Training, Group interactions, visits to places of
cultural importance and participation in seminars. The stu-
dents gave an excellent feedback about the programme and added that they would motivate their
juniors to visit VIT for such programmes. Dr. S. Margret Anouncia, Dean, SCSE and Dr. K. Sathi-
yanarayanan, Dean SSL interacted with the students on a regular basis.
• Summer School Program Dongseo University, South Korea: 10 Students and one Professor from Dongseo University,
South Korea visited our University for the Summer School Pro-
gram organized by the School of Social Sciences and Lan-
guages. Prof.Christopher Rajasekaran executed the program
that included lectures on India and its heritage, visits to places
of cultural importance, field trips, Interactions with School,
College and Public.
• Welcome Banquet : Our Honourable Chancellor, presided over the welcome
banquet arranged for the International Exchange students
from universities above and other universities: 3 Students
from Clermont- Ferrand , ENSCCF, France;
The Round Table Exchange Programme:
A group of eight students from Europe who were on a visit to
South India on a “Round Table Exchange Programme” visited
the University on 01 August. They had a wonderful time of inter-
action with around 12 of our Indian, NRI and Foreign students at
the IR Office. They were taken on a tour of our campus and were
immensely impressed by the awesome and exquisitely planned
layout of our gardens, the academic facilities and the Library. This
was followed by a scrumptious lunch. They also met our Hon’ble
Chancellor and Vice-President, Mr. Sekhar Viswanathan. After a
brief intro’, they shared their views on VIT and their experiences of a week’s stay in ‘Incredible India’.
“Beatz-2013”:
The International Students Club strives at enhancing cross cultural exchange
among students in the University campus. ISC annually hosts a talent show
‘BEATZ’, for NRI and foreign students, which provides the freshers as well as the
seniors a chance to interact and display their talents. The ‘BEATZ-2013’ was
held on 06 August, 2013 at the Anna Auditorium. This provided a platform for
the NRI and Foreign students to showcase their talents.
The show started at 6:00 p.m. with a solo dance performance, following
which there were several other dances and songs. The air was filled with cheer
and excitement which was evident from the loud rounds of applause from the
enthusiastic audience.
‘Sixth Sanity’ and ‘Paradox’ were the two bands which performed that
evening and shook up the audi’ with their heavy metal performances. However,
the highlight of the show was a solo dance performance by DG, a foreign stu-
dent who not only rocked the stage but got everyone up on their feet.
The vote of thanks was proposed by Mr. Kashish Sharma, President of the In-
ternational Students Club.

The Dance Club put up a scintillating programme on the dances
of different states of India. The International Exchange students
