80 Children Rescued From Child Labour
Meerut CHILDLINE under the
aegis of Janhit Foundation
added another feather in its
cap, when the foundation
alongwith the Police Depart-
ment of Meerut, rescued 80
children working as labourers
under its campaign named as
'Operation Masoom'. The
team for the past 15-20 days
was working on the campaign,
observing the target groups.
After identifying the laborers,
the list was classified on the
basis of police stations in dif-
ferent areas, such that whole
of the city area of Meerut
could be covered. In a meet-
ing held between Ms. Anita
Rana, Director of Janhit Foun-
dation; Mr. Akhil Kumar,
D.I.G., Meerut and all the sen-
ior most officials of various
police stations on April 15,
2010, intervention strategy
was planned and the team was
divided in different groups.
On April 19, 2010 the opera-
tion was carried out which
came up as a huge success.
During the rescue, children's
name, age, employees'
name, address of the shop/
dhaba alongwith other de-
tails were noted. Mostly the
children rescued were be-
tween 7-14 yrs of age.
These children were pro-
vided temporary shelter at
Bal Sadan (Child Shelter
Home) and meanwhile,
their address were traced
and guardians were con-
tacted. It has been felt by
the organisation that to
reduce such cases of child
labours it is very necessary
to give a positive shape to
the psychology of the peo-
ple involved, whether it be
the children who is a victim
of child labour or the per-
son who is using the child as
a labourer or even child's
parents who allow him/her
to do so. And so, counseling
was provided to all children
rescued, their parents/
guardians when they came
to take these children home
and the employees from
where these children were
rescued mostly of which
were the dhaba owners.
A few children amongst
these were of a view that
it is a necessity for them to
work as labourers as their
family did not have enough
earning, some were even
very aggressive while kept
for temporary shelter at

World Water Day Celebrations...

Janhit Foundation celebrated
“The World Water Day' jointly
with Dainik Jagran, by conduct-
ing tests, surveys, spreading
awareness and various other
activities spanning over a period
of four days.
The activities included an audit
on water usage being done in
the houses in Brahampuri and
Jail Chungi Area. Question-
naires were filled up and pam-
phlets distributed. At Tej Garhi
Crossing and Eves Crossing,
two major Crossings of Abu
Lane and near Metro Plaza a
group of 15 children dressed as
water drops held placards, and
distributed pamphlets spreading
awareness about water conser-
vation and shouted slogans.
Dressed as beggars asking for
water, children moved amongst
the crowd to create awareness
about the dire consequences of
wasting this precious life sus-
taining natural resources. Talk
show and Quiz in Radha Go-
vind Insti-
tute,

also con-
ducted

Foundation during an exhibition
on Recycling Water and Saving
Water. Seeing the presentation
of the students it was being felt
that one segment of children
have become aware of the im-
pending disaster of water short-
age and have started taking
small steps which will contrib-
ute in avoiding this disaster. No
topic was left uncovered, by
Late Mr. Anil Rana had a vision
to make the present citizens
aware about the significance of
water and organic farming so
that the future generations
could reap the benefits. In this
line he had visited several
schools to spread awareness.
His efforts have come to frui-
tion. Holy Angel School of
Muzaffarnagar invited Janhit
them in the wonderful innova-
tive working models which
were a proof of their awareness
and earnest efforts. A street
play presented by the students
highlighted the chipko move-
ment which needs resurgence
once again. At the end of the
programme the guests were
offered organic food.
Janhit Foundation availed the significant opportunity on 'World Water Day'
March 22, 2010 by organising a seminar at Ajay Kumar Garg, Engineering College,
Ghaziabad. This was done with the active participation of Mr. R.K. Aggarwal, Di-
rector of the college. 200 students who were present in the auditorium were
sentisitized and this was clearly visible through number of questions and queries
they raised. It was a great brain storming session for the students, most of whom
were unaware of the fact that 'Soon, wars will be fought for the cause of water'.

'Spreading Water Literacy on Wheels' becomes the talk of the town at Noida
'Spreading Water Literacy
on Wheels' being run by
Janhit Foundation in support
with the ADOBE and CAF,
is a project aimed at making
children aware about the
use and conservation of wa-
ter. The focus is on spread-
ing awareness amongst stu-
dents of standard VI to VIII.
The programme includes
visit to the school in the first
year of the project for a
duration of two hours which
includes a lecture, a film, a
slide show, a question and
answer session and a pres-
entation. To make it more
interesting, some attractive
and colourful banners and
handbills are also put up on
the school notice boards. As
a part of the project various
schools have been visited till
date, such as:
GOVERNMENT INTER
COLLEGE - The students
showed keen interest in
learning about the water-
testing ways. The interactive
session was quite fruitful as
the young impressionable
minds took this talk as an
eye-opener.
RADIANT ACADEMY - The
students were made aware
of the water situation
through a presentation. A
documentary on water
quality was also screened
which raised curiosity
amongst children and
alongwith a realization that
the same water which is
'life-giver' can also be 'life
taker' if we do not care for
it. About 200 students par-
ticipated in the workshop.
An interactive question and
answer session kept them
hooked to the topic. The
principal of the school
alongwith 5 teachers also
attended the workshop.
BHAVU RAW
DESHMUKH PUBLIC
SCHOOL - An awareness
programme was conducted
with about 100 students as
audience. The students
were made aware about
the problems due to water
scarcity and water contami-
nation. A presentation was
shown to the students and
water from their school
was tested to make them
aware about the water
quality. The students par-
ticipated enthusiastically
and in feedback reported
that the programme was an
eye-opener for them.
ALLIANCE WORLD
SCHOOL - The team was
appreciated by the school
authorities for the presen-
tations and for the won-
derful response they could
evince from 100 odd stu-
dents who were enthusi-
astic to be the 'Water
Saviours', 'Water Warri-
ors' and 'Water Core-
Cops'. The students also
learnt water testing and
visited the mobile library.
GANDHI MEMORIAL
PUBLIC SCHOOL -
About 100 students were
made aware about water
related problems starting
from scarcity of potable
water, contamination of
water, the causes and
ways and means to resolve
this crisis. A powerful
presentation was screened
and two documentaries
were shown to the stu-
dents. Literature related
to water and water saving
tips was given to the stu-
dents. The students took
an oath to be conscien-
tious and save each drop
that counts.

CHILDLINE ADVISORY BOARD (CAB) Discussed Better Functioning of Meerut CHILDLINE
P A G E 7 M AY 2 0 1 0
CHILDLINE Advisory Board meeting was held on 27th April 2010 at Bachat Bhawan, chaired by
the District Magistrate of Meerut, Mr. Bhuvnesh Kumar.
The DM extended his support to CHILDLINE and ensured that if any officer was erring in their
duties to support CHILDLINE he would personally take up the issue. Various department heads
were present in the meeting who were explained about the expectations required from their
personnel. Mr. Gaur, DPO Meerut was appointed by the DM to coordinate activities between
CHILDLINE and the various departments. Representatives of Childrens' home were requested
to take in children even if age or any other parameter was not met in an emergency, keeping the
interest of the child was paramount at all times.
Mr. Singh, DIOS Meerut assured that notices would be sent to all school principals to attend
awareness meetings with CHILDLINE. Mr. O.P. Kanik, Station Superintendent Meerut was con-
gratulated for the response from them, but was also requested to spread more awareness and
make announcements on the station as well as permit CHILDLINE to set up canopy on the plat-
form. Mr. Roshan Lal, District Labour Commissioner Meerut was appreciated for getting
CHILDLINE logo printed on the pamphlets distributed in Nauchandi Mela, thus spreading aware-
ness about the helpline. Further efforts for spreading awareness were solicited. DM asked
CHILDLINE to enlist help of Public Information Officer and Prasar Bharti Representative to
spread more awareness of the kind of services extended by the helpline.
The meeting was a step forward to realizing the smooth functioning of the service and in inte-
grating various other departments.
The farmers of village Khatki and Narangpur producing their crops organically with the inspiration and urge from Janhit Foun-
dation became master trainers for farmer delegates from Bangladesh. Two delegates visited the fields and acquired the know-
how to grow crops organically. The two delegates who were from the NGO 'Unnayan Dhara' from Bangladesh appreciated the
technique and understood the concept after a meeting with the farmers working in the fields. The 'Seed to Market' concept
initiated by Janhit Foundation was complimented and they visited the outlet for the sale of the produce at 'Organic Aaharam'.
They carried with them some organically grown products and also a mind full of new ideas to be implemented in their fields.
Janhit Foundation is thus building a cultural bridge; farmers from beyond the boundaries of India came, saw, got encouraged,
praised and adopted the Indian Organic farming methods.

Helping the Deprived - „Mission Enable‟
26th of February was ob-
served as ‘Enable Day’ at Jan-

The focus of this meet was to generate
greater awareness about this crucial
issue and to develop recommendations
for action, with wide stakeholder in-
puts.
It was seen that though the phenome-
non of climate change has been in inter-
national focus, culminating in the Co-
penhagen Accord, its connection to
agriculture and food security has re-
ceived considerably less attention. It
was stressed that adapting our agricul-
ture timely to climate change is key to
reducing its impact on agricultural pro-
ductivity and rural livelihoods.
It was realized according to climate
estimates, agriculture in the produc-
tive areas of South Asia will be
amongst the worst affected, with
predictions that almost 40 percent
of the production potential could
be lost if the problem is not ad-
dressed. Ensuring agriculture pro-
ductivity and food security require
careful management of resources
like soil, water and biodiversity. We
responded to the need to address
mitigation from agriculture, but far
more, strategies for adaptation, so
that the impact of climate change
can be minimized.
Aspects of mitigation and coping
with adaptation in order to support
sustainable food security were ex-
plained by experts in the field.
After the presentations participants
held discussions to frame recom-
mendations for action that will be
sent to the government. This is ex-
pected to lay the basis for a sus-

Janhit foundation has also initiated a
project with Global greengrants fund to
increase the green cover and restore
the green belt so that the effort can be
emulated elsewhere in Uttar Pradesh.
The aim is to create a balance between
the rapid urbanization vis-À-vis growing
air pollution and social forestry in uttar
and enhance The drinking water
availability and to Create aware-
ness within the community By
highlighting the importance of wa-
ter conservation. Use the restored
green belt as an example for the
city'S need to become clean and
environment friendly.
Greening through The Global Greengrants Fund
Contributing Towards Policy Change
Uttar Pradesh enjoys the reputation of having the two greatest rivers of our Country, The Ganga and The Yamuna, flowing
on its bosom apart from small rivers like the Hindon, the Ram Ganga, the Kali, the Gomti and many more. Western Uttar
Pradesh is home to a web of canals and drains which cater to the needs of the peasantry.
Since ages these water bodies have been satisfying the quench of the inhabitants of this state. Unfortunately, in the last 4-5 decades owing to the greed of the community, the fresh water resources have witnessed a considerable decline in their
water quality. The ever-increasing groundwater quality deterioration is a major threat to the people and their economy
and is of a major concern with regards to the sociology of the most expansive state of our Country.
Keeping these critical situations in mind, Janhit Foundation is working on this present proposal with the support of India
Water Partnership towards the formulation of a strategy to implement the groundwater policy for the state of Uttar
Pradesh.
As the initial phase, Janhit Foundation is working towards identification of selected State Departments and Institutions/
Agencies, which would be the major stakeholders of this project, to review the policy. For each area which has been men-
tioned in the groundwater policy draft, all the related bodies are being approached so that they give their views and also
comment towards the effective implementation of this important policy. List of all the identified Departments/Agencies
would be provided with the next progress report.
Once all the reviews are gathered, a dialogue through a workshop would be conducted.
