24 November 2017 Messages from the Headteacher Dear Parent/Carers Congratulations to Carmel Keane - We were delighted to hear that Miss Keane was award- ed the CYMFED Inspiring Youth Leader Award for England and Wales at the ‘Celebrating Young People Awards’ in London on Thursday night. This is in recognition of the outstanding work that Miss Keane does to support young people in our community and is thoroughly deserved! Exams - Over the next three weeks students in all year groups will be taking part in exams and end of term assessments. They start next week when students in Years 12 and 13 will be sitting their mock exams. These will be followed by Year 11 mock exams during week commencing 4 December. All remaining year groups from Years 7-10 will be taking part in end of term assessments that also begin next week. Students should be using their Assessment Booklets and other revision material to help them prepare for these important assessments. We wish all students the best of luck. Year 9 Parents’ Evening - We look forward to seeing all Year 9 students and their parents at Parents’ Evening on Thursday 7 December, 4.30-7.15pm. Subject staff and the tutorial team will be on hand to discuss targets and the progress being made on your son/daughter’s individual courses. Following feedback from parents, we are trialling a new online booking system, therefore it is really important that parents and students are on time and keep to their 5 minute appointment time. If parents have any problems booking appointments please phone or email the school for support. Year 12 Parents’ Evening Advance Notice - We look forward to seeing all parents and students at Years 12 and 13 Parents’ Evening on Thursday 14 December, 4.30-7.15pm. This is a very important evening for Years 12 and 13. Subject staff and the tutorial team will be on hand to discuss targets and progress being made. This is the first of two parents’ evenings for Years 12 and 13. The second takes place on 15 March 2018. Safer Travel to and from School - Students are reminded to be careful travelling to and from school during the dark winter nights. Students should always try to avoid travelling alone and make sure that they never talk to strangers. Non-uniform Day - To support our Advent fundraising there will be a non-uniform day on Friday 1 December. Students will be allowed to come into school in their own clothes in exchange for a £1 donation. Alex has been voted House Sentor and is now part of the student government. Alex has signed up for his classes for next semester - History of Modern Philosophy, German, Computer Science and History of Modern Latin America. Alex will be travel- ling to Cuba in March on an all expenses paid trip as part of his History of Modern Latin America course. Students had to be invited to take part in this course and Alex was invited by his History professor. Alex will be spending Thanksgiving with a friend in Connecticut but hopes to visit us after the Christmas break. Mr R Davies Primary School Chaplaincy Team Training On Wednesday 22nd November we hosted a training day for our primary School chaplaincy teams. We started the day with Advent prayer stations, followed by gospel dramas, a giant Advent wreath and we finished the training day by preparing the Mass together. The chaplaincy teams were fantastic and prepared absolutely everything for the Mass themselves - the music, drama, dressing the altar, setting up the hall, leading the Liturgy of the Word and writing bidding prayers. We had a team of Year 9 helpers who worked really hard to make the day a great success. Thank you to Fr Pat for celebrating Mass for us and to all the staff and pupils in both schools that made the day possible. Laura Byrne Great News for all Skiers!
